Chapter 1
I'm a student at Sunshine Middle School. It's a really old school in New York. Every afternoon, we can have half an hour of free time. That's when this story happened.
Hello. I'm Mae. I'm not really happy to meet you. You see, I would not be telling this story if I had stayed behind where my heart wanted to stay. But here I am, back in New York, writing to you.
Everything is kind of terrible in my life. My mom left me when I was only three. Everyone told me she died in a car crash, but I never believed it. I still have some blurry memories of her. In my memory, my mom is a beautiful woman with honey-colored hair and sea eyes. She smiles at me and whispers my full name: Aurora. That's my real first name. I have never used it since my mom left.
There is nothing fun in my life. Except for one book trilogy. It's called The Lord of the Rings. My dad loves it too, but he seldom reads it.
During one afternoon free time, I was reading The Lord of the Rings under a big tree. The stories are interesting. I wish I lived in the same time as the characters and not this old, small Sunshine Middle School in New York. Suddenly, a rotten egg flew my way and burst open on my shoulder!
"EW!" I shouted. A bunch of girls laughed from behind my tree.
"Ewww!" the girl in the front copied my voice. She has dirty unwashed hair and a pair of googly little eyes.
"Your mommy will be angry to know about that, ah-LIZARD" I shouted back. The bunch of girls looked a little bit angry, but soon laughed after they heard the front girl's answer.
"What about your mommy?" said Alyssa, the front girl. "She died in a car crash when you were just three!"
I was so angry that I couldn't control myself. Before anyone realized, BOOM! I punched right in the middle of those googly eyes.
"OUCH!" cried Alyssa. Suddenly, I realized what I had done, and I ran away as fast as I could.
