PAINTED PRISON CHRONICLES
CHAPTER 34
REQUIEM OF FATE
BEETWEEN THE LINES OF ACT I
TWO LIVES IN PURSUIT OF ONE HAPPINESS
Hello everybody, I managed to once again get back. It's been quite some time, much, much longer than I expected... sometimes writing can be challenging, and there are moments in which I have to pause, not only because of other responsibilities, but also proper mood that can be difficult to set this time of year. But nevertheless, my love for writing tries to triumph over it and so far, it is not so bad.
With this and possibly following chapters (at the very least the next one) we shall switch the place but kept the timeline similar to the one of previous episode. This chapter runs more or less parallel to the previous one, except being located in Academy City, and having different protagonists... quite a few actually, but a main part is without a doubt with the dynamic duo of Hasako and Maidono.
This chapter is also a test (an in story pilot, as you may say) of sort if I were to give Hasako and/or Maidono a dedicated story in the future (which is viable possibility). I wanted to have a chapter like that because: a) It is important to the plot; b) It coincides with one year anniversary of Maidono's introduction to the story; c) The creation of this chapter is partially owed to amazing rise of popularity of those two characters, both individually and as a duet of, to the point of it actually causing a fluctuation in likability of their actual, canon counterparts in the fandom. I was deeply touched by the repeated praise of the characters and after some time, I decided that they both deserved great care and spotlight, with Touma and Gokusai sisters still in the picture of course.
I mean it, thank you so much for the love you are giving this pair of friends.
Of course, this is still within a setup for KNT's confrontation with Touma. However, this time we got a bit of a reflective and interactive chapter between girls, in various contexts. But I think that those who love Maidono, Hasako, and not only them will find a bits to touch many emotions (in terms of character interactions, it might as well be one of the most touching chapters, but I leave the judgement to you).
What else to say... like I said before, I am sorry for the wait. I have many challenges, and sometimes, three weeks of writing a chapter is inevitable. Sometimes it is needed, sometimes there is no other option. However, know that I always think to deliver the new chapter as soon as possible without loss to its quality. I am a reader of many fanfics, and I know how it's to wait.
If I think of anything else, I will find a way to let you know. But for now, let's get to the questions.
Q&A:
KHVSFF: I knew you will like Mugino aspect of this chapter. I too wish she had a deep confrontation about her redemption in the main story. I took extra care writing this moment and I think there few characters that went better with it than Orsola. She is so different from Mugino that the dissonance works wonders. Ladylee does bring a lot of comedic elements, but will also bring something more somber too, when the story will be closer to its end.
Uzuhyu senpai: Lap pillow supremacy! They are amazing!
BlueJack22: Thank you for appreciating my take on Orsola. And I agree, she embodies qualities of a nun in absolutely perect manner.
5had0wHand: Orsola has this gift of therapeutic contact, similar to Touma actually. And I know I have obsession with finding bloodline connections, but they seem to make such interesting twists and connections, especially in the story like Index.
Fullbreaker: I think you mentioned it before and I assumed you will like it. I am glad I managed to meet your taste and expectations.
DJAA: Those are one of the best words an author can get. Don't worry, I think I don't plan on ending it soon, but it also means breaks between chapters can be longer. If you can bear with that, I don't think the story will end up soon. No promises, but I don't think there is a reason for you to worry. And seriously, I can't thank you enough for your comment.
Without further delay, let's being!
Let's detract for a moment, my story, from Touma falling asleep on the lap of tender Orsola, or Mugino Shizuri facing an unknown peril after enlightening heart-to-heart talk. The events that transpired are yet to be revealed... however, other story, simultaneous with the one already brought to the attention beforehand, was taking place in Academy City. Albeit with completely different atmosphere, those moments would also intertwine with later occurrences that were to befall Kamijou Touma's group in the future. So, let's go back a little bit and recount what two friends, left in the apartment, experienced in the day that marked the trip to the oversea convent.
(SOON AFTER TOUMA AND OTHERS LEFT TO MEET WITH ORSOLA)
Kankyougami Hasako was standing by the kitchen in Touma and sisters' apartment.
"And so they went... I hope Touma-san finds my bento boxes agreeable"
She smiled to herself, stirring the soup in the pot.
Touma and quite a sizeable group of people went on the trip to help Sukemi Rin. Meanwhile, Hasako was in the apartment belonging to three Gokusai sisters and Kamijou Touma. She could treat it as if it was her home.
As for the reason why she was in the apartment instead of accompanying Touma was simple...
"Aw, I can't take this anymore!" came a wail from Touma's bedroom.
Hasako sighed and poured the soup into the pot, before walking through the corridor
"Don't even think of trying to sneak out to go with them"
"I know, I know... but did I have to get sick exactly in the time of their departure?"
Slightly red and shivering Maidono Hoshimi was covered in blankets, and sported a pouting face similar to a kindergartner robbed of his favourite toy on the playground.
"Why did I have to get sick? I wanted to go so badly!"
"I guess that's what you get from randomly flying from the apartment in the evening hours with a rather skimpy clothing"
"Oh, come on, I parade with my arms bare on Christmas Eve, and not even a sniffle, and now I am out for 2 hours, and I am helpless in bed, unable to do anything?"
"You only have a slight cold, Hoshimi. You will be fine in a day or two. I think my intuition that you are overdramatic in sickness is proving correct"
"Overdramatic?! It's not a crime to have a bit of attention" pout intensified as the girl stuck her head out of the covers." Ugh, I have a good immunity, so you are right, by tomorrow I will probably be fine. Tch, but I still had to miss the trip..."
She looked at her friend, who was calmly sipping her tea by the bed.
"By the way, I know you wanted to go too"
"Of course I wanted to." Hasako replied calmly" I don't think I would ever feel otherwise"
"So why did you stay?"
"My my, and leave you like this? What kind of person would that make me? Touma-san understood. In fact, he trusted me enough to take care of you"
"He... cared that I was sick?"
"You know him by now, don't you?"
"Yeah... thank you, Hasacchi. For staying with me when it's something this stupid..."
"It's alright. Now, I have something for you to eat"
"A soup? But I wanted to eat something sweet"
"Come on, don't make a fuss. Touma-san left me precise instructions and even made this for you. I only added a bit of my own style to it. It's thick and without elements to eat with chopsticks, just the way you like it."
"T-Touma made the effort for me?... And you too... w-well, you two are the best cooks I know..."
"That's enough, you are clearly shivering. Come on, first blow your nose, then eat the soup"
"F-Fine... ugh..."
After loudly blowing her nose, Maidono gestured with her index finger and bowl of soup moved through the air towards her. She then floated part of the liquid itself into her mouth.
"Ah! It's hot!"
"That's good, it is meant to warm you up. Don't try to eat too much in one gulp, and blow on it first"
Hasako looked around as Maidono tried to cool the soup down, Hasako looked around the room and smiled.
"It's so kind for Touma to let us stay here and use is room too."
"Yeah, very sweet of him. My place is way smaller than here. To top it off..."
Maidono closed her eyes and then promptly fell forwards, first face into the covers.
Subtle eyebrow of Hasako rose up at the sight.
"What... on heavens' mercy are you doing, Hoshimi?"
"Well, I am a bit stuffy, but it's not like my smell is gone. And in all of the hurry, he didn't change the sheets... I am usually not all for that stuff, but..."
Maidono sniffed the covers, and sighed in delight.
'It smells like him. It reminds me of that time when we were close to each other in the hospital before he ventured out alone... that smell...'
"W-What are you doing? This is unbecoming..." Hasako blurted out before Maidono lurched forward, grabbing her arm, causing her friend to fall onto bed, also face down.
After a moment, ears and visible skin of the first esper became rosy red.
Wanting it or not, a familiar scent entered Hasako's nose.
'As much as I want to deny, it does smell like him... it's like I am being in his arms. Nothing compares to that sense of security... I wish I could stay like that for...
She snapped out of the trance after a small nudge to her side.
After a moment, Hasako looked up to notice a smug face of Maidono.
"Hmm, miss prim and proper? You spaced out a bit there..."
"I...I blacked out when I hit the bed"
"Suuuure... and that red face says something else. I mean, I don't really swing that way, but even I have to admit this face is cute."
"W-We've been over this! I-I am not supposed to be cute."
"Yet I bet for Touma you are~"
"S-Stop teasing me!"
"I am not, really! Touma thinks so. That thing you do with your feet and legs when you are emotional is sugar overdose, I see it in his eyes"
"W...What?!"
"Wait, you don't realize it? When you are excited, your move your feet in that slight shuffle motion, and when you are nervous, you lock your knees just a little bit"
Hasako's valiant effort to get rid of her blush was in vain, as she reddened again.
"W-Why?! How?! Huh?! Y-You mean..."
"Yup, everybody sees it and Touma definitely noticed"
Hasako fanned her face with her hand, trying to ignore Maidono's grin.
"E-Ekhm... a-anyway, it's a surprise to see you like this. This is your original hairstyle, isn't it?"
Maidono, sitting on the bed and resting against the wall, had a bob-cut in the colour of brown so dark that it was almost black, except for lighter hair ends, more akin to colour of desert sand. According to Maidono, that effect was completely natural. The generally dark hair, reaching middle of her neck, contrasted nicely with her light, amber-coloured eyes.
"Oh, that? Yeah, that's how I look naturally."
"But you still keep your wig around?"
"Well, it reminds me how myself and Touma met. And sometimes I put it on to imagine roleplay in be-"
Hasako spat out some tea, and waved her hands while coughing to stop Maidono's explanation.
"W-What do you say about watching some TV?"
Hasako's prism-like eyes lit up slightly in excitement.
"You sure love to watch it" remarked Maidono.
Hasako was a bit technophobic and found it hard to adjust to some of the modern technology, with Touma having to hold her hand when they rode Academy City's train for the first time. The girl was used to much lower speeds and even after some time getting used to it, she was still unsure in contact with some machines. She also had a severe fear when it came to in-flight turbulences.
But there were some things that Hasako did enjoy, for example a console (that she played with both Touma and Maidono, who painstakingly educated her on it) as well as the TV. Or not so much as television itself, but...
"It looks so bright and magical!" Hasako clapped her hands" All that colour on such a wide screen"
Hasako was put into forced hibernation almost twenty years before the introduction of colourful TV in Japan, which was at the beginning of 1960s. Thus, the colours on the screen were mesmerizing surprise to her when she first saw them.
Soon after, two friends were sitting on the couch in the living room. Because Hasako ventilated the apartment earlier on, now they were wrapped tightly in blankets to fight the effects of fresh yet still slightly cold air in the shared space. With Maidono's blanket being dark and Hasako's being light, they were looking like sushi roll and tortilla, respectively, with only faces and hands sticking outside.
However the calmness lasted only for a moment.
"I am just saying that maybe we can watch something other than biology documentary"
"Hoshimi, those creatures are beautiful! And seeing all those sceneries makes me really appreciative for the world around us."
"We watched this one three times already. We are watching a spy movie, it's on TV-Action channel!"
Both girls looked at the remote. Hasako reached forward, but the remote jumped away, straight onto Maidono's palm.
"Heh heh, there is no one like me when it comes to reaching for things from a distance"
"I know that. You play with moving cars around the street from the window when you are bored."
"Since I am a poor girl plagued by sickness..."
"A mild cold..."
"... I get the dibs on what we will watch"
"Fine" Hasako swished her long hair aside, crossing her arms" I am beyond such pettiness"
"Even though you can knock me out with ease?"
Now it was Hasako's turn to pout.
"I shall not use one of most potent esper powers in history for this!"
Suddenly, there was a sound of the doorbell.
Hasako untangled herself from the blanker and walked across the living room and the corridor. She looked through the vizier and then opened the door.
"Oh? Kumokawa-san, what a surprise"
"I came to visit. Is my dear kouhai here?"
"You mean Touma-san? No, I am afraid not"
"I see... so my network made no mistake in deducing that he left the city. The question of the matter remains... why?"
"Oh, when it comes to this... Touma-san anticipated that you might come... and I am to tell you something"
"Oh, did he now?" Kumokawa smiled, as they walked back into the living room" Seems that he accepted my vigilance"
"Vigilance?" the sick sushi roll that was Maidono Hoshimi looked at Kumokawa" You mean that you don't hang on him like an overprotective mother? You mental types have the tendency to assume that you know what is best for everyone"
The girl with bare navel waved her hand dismissively.
"It's not my fault that this endearing fool of a kouhai has catastrophic tendency to get dragged into one accident after another. Someone with brains and right head on the shoulders has to watch over him. So... what is that you want to tell me?"
"Well, Touma-san has been affected by certain condition that affects and dissociates his psyche." Hasako said, fiddling with her hands" I am uncertain if I am able to explain it as well as he did, but... both for me and for Touma-san, you are someone very important. Not to mention with your intelligence, it might be for the benefit of all of us if you know about the situation..."
"Waste no time. I am all ears..."
(SOME TIME LATER, AFTER EXPLANATION)
"So, what do you think?"
"This is... different. Yes, yes... and to think I had no knowledge... him being demanding and evil... mhm, mhm... I must investigate... interesting, interesting... yes..."
"Are you sure that you are not getting overly excited about this?" Maidono commented" You are grinning an awful lot"
That snapped Kumokawa out of her muttering
"I-I was not getting excited. If anything, I am just... vexed, about this strange turn of events. While I do not desire for my kouhai to remain as such, it might be crucial for me to confront this Kamijou No Touma... seems like I am matched for it"
"Well, whatever benefits Touma the most should be fine."
"Hasako, I am grateful you informed me of this"
"Of course, Kumokawa-san. I owe you a lot and it was obvious to me that Touma-san wouldn't want to leave you out"
"As a reward, I will teach you the..."
Kumokawa motioned for Hasako to come closer and whispered to her ear.
"whisper, whisper, whisper... apron... whisper, whisper... seduce... whisper, whisper, whisper... that will surely make him... whisper, whisper..."
"H-Hwah?! B-But... there is no way I could do such a thing!"
"I don't know, you are great type. Such a lovely charm you have"
"I... I... will trust you..."
"Just remember, I get the right to use that technique first"
The busty senpai to smile slightly.
"Well, and as for Touma wanting me to know, I can only be glad that he trusts me so. You got me something to think about, so-"
The door to the apartment was kicked open, and after a moment a girl wearing black and yellow maid attire stormed in, pointing accusatory gesture towards Kumokawa Seria.
"Ah-hah! I was right! I was right you will go straight here, onee-chan!"
Seria sighed and faced the newcomer, who was none other than her younger sister.
"Maria... I thought that I wanted you to go for a shopping."
"Yes, you did. And I saw through your cunning ruse. You know why? Because I checked the status of your supplies today and there were no need of any additions! Don't act like you actually control what do you have or not when it comes to shopping"
"E-Eh? Maria, don't say things like that!"
"Tsk, tsk, tsk! Never underestimate the maid's memory when it comes to supplies. Also, you were far to excited to just go to your workplace. You are only getting excited and trying to hide it like this when you are going to see Kamijou-senpai"
"Eh... where went the times when I could fool you easily?"
"I am not a you, but I am your sister. You can't hog all of the intellect in the family. I do have the best grades in my school. So where is Kamijou Touma?"
"Not here, regretfully. According to... oh, you don't know each other. Maria, this is the girl in my care I told you about: Kankyougami Hasako. And that greenish-black roll of blanket on the couch is her friend, Maidono Hoshimi."
"Oi, what's up with that introduction?!"
"They are both exceptionally powerful espers and are..." Seria seemed to look for a word for a moment" close to Kamijou Touma as of recent times. Maidono-san, Hasako-san, this is my younger sister, Kumokawa Maria. She is a maid in training"
Maria bowed, lifting hem of her skirt with her hands.
"A pleasure. So, Kamijou is not here. A pity..."
'A pity, really! I only recently discovered how grateful I am for what he did after Kagun-sensei's passing, and how similar they were. If I sneaked here when my sister were charming him, I could observe them from secrecy. A strong sir, dominating lady, and maid bating her breath to not be discovered, yet also yearning to have what lady of the house has, especially since they are related. And then after she would leave, I would surprise him and then kiss him senselessly, tasting the forbidden love behind my sister's back...'
"Maria-san... are you okay? You spaced out a bit..."
"Oh, right, right... I am fine, fine, really fine. Anyway, look at you! You are beautiful! Your eyes... they are magnificent. And that hair is so extraordinary"
Hasako lowered her head in modesty
"It's nothing, really" she muttered shyly" Your hair looks great too. Those drills must take some time"
"Thank you for noticing. Well, yeah, they do, but it's a personal choice."
Maidono finally got up from the sofa, stripping herself of the blanket cocoon.
"And you are Maidono-san, right? It's rare for onee-chan to commend someone on their ability."
"I am the strongest in telekinesis though"
"Wow! Can I see you go all out?"
"Don't encourage her, Maria-san" Hasako sighed, grabbing the suddenly 'healed' Maidono, who puffed her chest out" If she does, this building and probably quite a few around us will be no more."
Before Maria could inquire any more, Seria stood up and nodded at them.
"Everyone, I must be on my way. Thank you for the coffee and this important conversation. I will be sure to use this information immediately and gather even more in case opportunity to take action arises. I will be off. Maria, I would like you to run several tests on Hasako-san."
"Huh? Tests?"
"You don't have anything much planned for tonight, is that right? What I am talking about is a routine checkup that can be performed even outside of the lab. I will send you the necessary equipment to this address."
"But-"
"I will see you around!"
And then, she was gone.
"Mmmmm! Onee-chan always bosses everyone around, so rude! Well, it's too bad that Kamijou is not here, but..." Maria looked at two other girls with a glint in her eye" Idea of an girl-only talk on a sleepover doesn't sound half-bad"
"Girl only-talk? What's that?" formerly friendless lady from another time period asked innocently.
Maria and Maidono looked at each other and nodded.
"That poor, poor girl... she needs proper education..."
"I am a bit under the weather though..."
"Duly noted. I will watch myself then when I come back"
"Come back?"
"I want to go to few places before stopping for the night. Bye!"
After couple of moments, Maidono and Hasako went back on the couch, with telekinetic closing the door with the motion of her finger.
Putting the TV on again, they were met with the news channel.
"Look. They are displaying some inter-school statistics"
Hasako took an elegant sip of tea, looking at the graphs in front of them.
"I honestly don't know how to feel about this whole 'level system' ordeal"
"You don't know how to... oh, right. That's another thing you missed out in your criostasis, right?"
"In my time, the city wasn't nearly as vast or populous. We didn't have as many espers either, not to mention as powerful as what you call level 5. I once had a talk about level system with both Touma and Hamazura-san. I learned that level divisions brought a lot of pain to my successors, through injustice, prejudice, and unequal treatment."
"Academy City without levels..." Maidono mused" To imagine it is so surreal and strange."
"When I became the first artificial esper, I wanted to live in a society where people could cherish those gifts and each individual could be treated with hope for the potential hidden within him."
"I am... sorry. It sucks that your ideal wasn't realized"
"Aleister had other plans... and other people, who were more easy to manipulate. I was deemed dangerous and rejected again"
"Again?"
Hasako did not elaborate, so Maidono probed on.
"Do not let yourself down like that! You have many good qualities. You are beautiful, powerful, and smart as hell"
Beginning Child smiled a little at that.
"Thank you. It is true that I was deemed most intelligent child for Aleister's purpose. For good and for bad."
"Bet no one could compare to you"
"For a time being, yes. But they were many people who wanted to get Aleister's favouritism for one reason or another. Probably most talented, just before my hibernation, was my kouhai, user of Synthesize Grid. He was much younger than me, but held a talent that could not be ignored."
"Synthesize Grid? Sounds kind of funky"
"One of the greediest and definitely most voracious ability, capable to consuming and absorbing not only spacetime, but even esper abilities themselves. He wasn't a bad person per se, but we had different value sets. And something about that power, that enclosed and weaponized Shadow Metal, that consumed instead of giving... always repelled me"
"Huh, sounds like you had your fair share of interactions back then as well... Also, what do you meant by 'for good and bad'? Isn't being smart a good thing?"
"Let's put it like this... my father was a principal of one of the most acclaimed school in Showa Japan, who was one the greatest when it came to spreading the europeization during Meiji era, while my mother was a noble lady of one of the oldest and most traditional families in Kyoto. In other words, greatness in both etiquette and above all, education, was expected of me from the youngest age, and was painstakingly put into me... with or without my interest. Surely, it allowed me to be chosen by Aleister... but..."
Hasako got silent. Sensing that her friend was facing some difficult memory, Maidono changed the subject.
"Look. Tokiwadai and Nagatenjouki are at the top."
"Nagatenjouki, huh? Brings back memories."
"Yeah, that was strange... but I can't lie that it was a fun. A lots of it."
(FLASHBACK)
The incident concerning Nagatenjouki Academy happened with a meeting a familiar face.
Maidono and Hasako were on the walk with Amazora after treating the girl to ice-cream. Formally, Maidono was still Amazora's telekinesis instructor and as such spent some time with the girl. But even besides that, Maidono grew fond of the chirpy and free spirited girl. And Hasako, still occasionally sleeping over at Touma's and sisters' place, was more than well-bonded with the youngest Gokusai.
It was a fairly normal walk, with Maidono piggybacking her smaller student, when Hasako pointed at something to the right
"Hoshimi... isn't that?"
Maidono looked to the side and gasped.
"Where does she think she's going?!"
There was a construction site on the side of the road, by the improvised fence. Maidono's sight focused on the girl who was just climbing over it and jumped down on the other side.
"What is this girl doing? It's dangerous!"
The girl ran nearer the constructed building, visibly trying to reach for something that was slipping from her grasp.
Maidono's feet left the ground as she flew over the fence.
"I have a bad feeling that... oh crap! I knew it!"
As the girl, who was Amazora's age, caught the paper, there was a noise above. In the next moment, a colossal piece of stone resembling a gigantic domino fell down straight onto the girl who tripped and closed her eyes just when Maidono extended her arm.
Moments later, the girl opened her eye, and gasped, noticing that the block, which was a crane counterweigh, was suspended above her and floated in the air without a care. It weighed over 20 tons, but levitated in the air as if it was weighing as little as a feather.
"Oi, be more careful" Maidono shouted. Her index finger moved and the counterweight was sent back up from where it fell" You almost flattened that girl. She is not supposed to be here, but be sure to secure those things."
"Sorry, missy" came a voice from above" I was so shocked that someone was below that I did a shitty job with tying it up. Now, get out of here, both of you"
"You don't have to tell me"
The smaller girl rose up.
"Thank you, you save-...ow?!"
Maidono pulled her by the ear and didn't let go as they left the construction site.
"And you! What is so important that... wait... I know you..."
The girl had wavy black hair and crystal blue eyes. An extraordinary combination for sure and even though the girl was young, she was giving a prospect of great future beauty. It was that characteristic combination of features that caused Maidono to recognize her. And Amazora did the final step by calling out.
"Yumecchi!"
"Gokusai-san?!"
"Why did you get onto that construction site for?"
"Well, I lost something very important to me... and..."
"Hoshimi" Hasako looked at Maidono, motioning slightly to the girl" Who do we have here? Also, Yumecchi? Like student like teacher..."
"That's Amazora's friend. Well, she was teaming up with her bullies once, but Touma made her reflect and change... her name is Asashima Yume. She has a lightbending ability"
"Oh, I think we briefly saw each other at Amazora-san's race. My name is Kankyougami Hasako. It's a pleasure, young lady" Hasako smiled at Yume" If you don't mind, what's the reason for which you risk your safety? It's that piece of paper, right?"
Yume lowered her head, her cheeks turning pink.
"It's a letter... I-I just wanted to make a present for Kamijou-san... b-because I really appreciate how much he did for me back then. It didn't seem much, but I really wanted to write a letter to him... s-so..."
The poor girl was getting more and more red. Maidono sighed before smiling and gently patting the brunette's head.
"Good thing it didn't get lost there. I take it that wind blew it away from your hand or something like that? Just be more careful with it"
"T-Thank you. I had something else to go with it, a cake... but it..." Yume shook her head, and smiled" No, it's nothing. Thank you, everyone. I will see you later, Gokusai-san."
With that, she quickly ran away, leaving others bewildered.
"My my, what a cute and endearing girl. Well, considered what she wants to convey, it's not really all that surprising..."
"Con.. vey? What are you talking about it, oba-chans?"
"Amazora, I told you before that you referring to us as 'aunties' makes me feel really old" Maidono chopped the head of the small blond" And secondly, that was a love letter"
"WHA?! Mumumumu! "
"Don't get so visibly jealous. It doesn't take a genius to guess that we are all interested in him"
"I know... but I still want to win"
"That's the attitude!"
"By the way, Hoshimi, I am surprised to see you so caring, about all of the romantic stuff. You didn't strike me like the type"
Maidono smiled nostalgically, looking at the sky.
"That girl is probably experiencing her first love now, just like Amazora here. That's no laughing matter. I personally tried to write love letters and couldn't bare to send them. Not to mention that other girls laughed at me for even trying..."
"Oh" Amazora hit her open hand with a fist" But Yumecchi can be in trouble."
"What do you mean?"
"You remember those girls that wanted to get a piece of me? Because Atsuki knows I have you to back me up, she is now targeting Yume because she thinks she betrayed her... and without my gattling gun I am not strong enough..."
"It's very noble to think of a friend even if you both like Touma. I take that you have a plan?"
A grin twisted Amazora's features into ones that were not really befitting a supposedly innocent girl her age.
"I do... but you have to help me. I think about... whisper, whisper, whisper, whisper..."
Maidono laughed out loud.
"I like it! That will teach them good. If there is one thing I dislike as much as chopsticks, it's bullying"
"H-Huh? Really? Truly I have to...?" Hasako mumbled, hiding her face behind her fingers.
"Why not? You have excellent looks for it. Like a japanese deity!"
"I-If that helps Amazora's friend... then I guess so..."
(LATER THAT DAY)
"Look what we have here. Oops, my hands slipped!"
A bouquet of flowers was thrown to the ground.
"Atsuki-san, please stop! This is for someone very important!"
Yume's plea was stopped as her classmate slammed her hand on the part of the wall next to her head.
"You think I care! Because of you, Gokusai can stroll free and is slowly getting more friends than me. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have to bear seeing that stupidly grinning face of hers every day!"
She noticed a piece of paper sticking out of the pocket in the Yume's uniform, near the heart.
"And what do we have here..."
"No, please! You can take my money, my lunch, anything, just don't... I worked so hard on this..."
Yume, although knowing that revealing a value of something to the bully was not the best idea, could not contain the cry of despair.
Atsuki unfolded the letter and scanned it with her eyes, before looking back at Yume with a smirk.
"You... fell in love? With that heroic sworn-brother of Gokusai? That's a riot! He is almost 4 years older than you! I bet you will be just one leaf in the forest. He is annoying, but lots of idiots like you are drawn to him. He won't even notice you"
Yume bit her lips and clenched her fist, looking at her oppressor with teary yet determined eyes.
"Even so... I can't ignore my own feelings. I have to tell him, because then I wouldn't stay true to myself."
"I see... a pity for you then..."
Atsuki looked at the letter and then grabbed it from both sides.
"No, please..."
"STOP RIGHT THERE!"
"Huh?!"
Atsuki turned around to see Amazora, standing tall as she pointed her finger at the bully.
"Tch, looked who came here to look like a big damn hero! Gokusai, leave me the hell alone. This is not your business!"
"Hah hah! If you think you can get away with messing with my friend... then I will shoot down that illusion!"
'How is that, onii-chan?! I modified your cool catchphrase! It's cool, isn't it? Amazora wants praise... no, onii-chan always says that true heroes never seek praise. Boo...'
"Gokusai, really? You can't beat me in close-combat!"
"Oh, I won't fight you. I am going... to put a curse on youuuu~"
Atsuki stared at Amazora, before chuckling and shaking her head.
"A curse? We are in middle school, not in kindergarten. And this is Academy City! No one sane here believes in..."
"Ayayayayayayaya! If you hear me, come! Oh, the great spirit! By offering you my lunch, I summon thee! Come and heed my call!"
Amazora's dramatic explanation was met with flat look from Atsuki.
"Yep, she lost it. So, Yume..."
"Come to me!"
Suddenly, nearby trashcan rose and smashed to the wall. Containers vibrated and opened and the street sign started to bend, as if it was dancing some strange modern groove.
"If you try to scare me, that's not going to work. There are many people who can do cheap tricks like thi-"
"Come to me, great spirit of ice and snow!"
More and more objects rose into the air. Atsuki frowned slightly.
"Great spirit of ice and snow!"
Snowflakes slowly started to fall, and for the first time, Atsuki began to look slightly concerned.
"Snow? But... it's not the season yet..."
" Great spirit of ice and snow!"
"She said it three times!" Yume whispered.
More and more snow fell down. Taking advantage of Atsuki's distracted state, Amazora motioned to Yume and threw something folded to her.
It was a winter coat.
"T-That's impressive, but fake snow can also be made with..." Atsuki suddenly shivered, the mist accompanying her breath" Wait... it's colder! I-It's actually colder!"
The arctic wind grew in magnitude and whirlwind of snow covered the alley.
And then... a slumping, wobbling silhouette appeared. She slowly made way to Atsuki.
"H-Hey, you there! Something weird happened with the weather! You..."
"Curse..."
"W-What?"
The girl finally walked to now pale Atsuki. She wore an old fashioned kimono, and her long hair, reaching almost behind her waist, covered her.
Then slowly, very slowly, she raised her hand and took the strands of hand aside.
Atsuki took a step backwards, breaking into sweat colder than arctic air.
The girl's skin was blueish-white, her lips red and bloody, as she extended her hand forward.
"It's... Y...Yu..."
"Cuuuuuuuuuuuuuurseeeeeeeeee on yoooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuu..."
"YUUUUUUUKI ONNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
Atsuki ran away so fast that she turned into blur.
After a moment, weather calmed down and Hasako shook her head.
Maidono floated down, already laughing her lungs off.
"Amazora, you little genius! I can't believe how good that was. Hoshimi, that makeup and cosmetics really make you look like a ghost"
"I doubt this is the best compliment." Hasako sighed. However, she was not able to fully suppress a smile" Though I admit, it was a bit satisfying"
"You... You created that blizzard?" Yume asked, looking at Hasako with awe. "Thank you so much for saving me, I will make sure to make it up to you... I just how it won't make trouble for you?"
"What trouble?" Amazora said cockily" Maidono sensei and Auntie Hasako are super strong. What can possibly be troublesome for them?"
"Emm... the thing about Atsuki is..."
(THE NEXT DAY)
"Well, maybe not troublesome, but certainly annoying" Maidono sighed, as she faced a group of girls in uniforms of a single school.
She was sitting on the table with Hasako and Gokusai Kaibi, when a group of girls came to their table. Up until then, it was a rather fine afternoon.
Touma suggested to Kaibi that spending time with Maidono and Hasako. The proposition that turned into a shopping trip. And Kaibi's initial scepticism soon turned into enjoyment. It turned out that the three of them were very compatible as the shopping pals.
Kaibi was glamorous and stylish, having great experience in colthes-hunting from her days as rental girlfriend. She always wore dresses of high quality and prided herself with choosing only the most elegant of jewellery.
Maidono was great experts on casual clothing. She did own multiple outfits that allowed her to blend in with the crowds, as one of her techniques during work on the side involved using non-conspicuous outfits to get close to the targets. Additionally, she never had to worry about her shopping being to heavy to carry.
Hasako was great when it came to traditional clothing, and would have a model-like quality to herself if not for her shyness, but modern fashion confused her a lot. After random tries that looked like an explosion of mismatched colour and style two girls took it upon themselves to educate their time displaced friend of trends and fashion.
To celebrate their successful hunt, they went to the bar, while wearing sunglasses, and got themselves shakes. It was there that they met Hamazura Shiage in company of his girlfriend, Takitsubo Rikou.
"Sup? It's been a while"
"It's nice to see that you are holding on too, ITEM boy"
"Aside from Gokusai-san, I don't believe you had much time to get to know my girlfriend, Takitsubo?"
"Hi there, Takitsubo-san"
"A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Takitsubo-san"
Takitsubo looked at Hasako and for a moment, her eyes lit in uncommon interest and confusion.
"Your AIM field..."
"Huh? What about it..."
"It's..."
However, in that moment, Hamazura looked at the entrance
"We have company"
"It appears so. And I bet it will be quite a difficult one at that" Kaibi added
Their casual, happy small-talk was interrupted by five girls in the uniforms that Kaibi recognized as Nagatenjouki's.
One of them, a voluptuous blond with green eyes, stepped forward and gazed at them with anger in her eyes.
"Which one of you is Maidono Hoshimi?"
The girls looked at one another.
"That would be me. What-"
"Damn you! You will pay for hurting my sister!"
'Gh! I knew it. Like Yume-chan said, Katsuma Atsuki's older sister, Katsuma Raiha, is a Student Council President in Nagatenjouki. Damn it...'
"Don't play dumb! I knew that you messed with my sister in the past. You are probably behind this thing too! You... tch, take off those sunglasses. Why do you even wear them indoors?"
"Because they are cool. So, what do you want?"
"By hurting and making a fool of my sister, you made fun of me. And by extension, students of Nagatenjouki."
"This is a really, really convoluted extension"
"Nagatenjouki... ah, there was a small institute by that name..." Hasako mused to herself.
"Your sister taunted mine first" Kaibi protest with her arms crossed.
"Hah, she probably had it coming."
"Excuse me?"
"We want to challenge you. I heard about you. You are supposedly the strongest telekinesis user. On my name as Katsuma Raiha, I will respond by putting against you all the greatest might of Nagatenjouki."
"Wow, you are really getting worked up about this. But a guy I fell in love with says to stop with stunts like that, so if you challenge me-"
"Don't blame Maidono-san! I was the one who actually scared your sister" Hasako spoke up, standing straight and putting a hand to her chest" So you should certainly blame me. Challenge me instead!"
Kaibi and Hamazura looked at Hasako in surprise. Maidono clenched her fist with a smile.
'Damn you Hasacchi, and this old-fashioned honourable behaviour of yours. Now I can't have you being the only one this cool!'
But before Maidono could rectify her desires, one of the girls behind Kaibi spoke, looking at Hasako
"I know you! You were speaking with Tokiwadai's level 5s the other day"
"You were? You are spending time with Railgun and Mental Out?" Kaibi asked Hasako.
"W-Well, I am curious about what current era's ladies do. Besides, I feel somewhat connected to them, as they are in highest echelon of power. Meetings like that, and not only with them, are highly educational"
"If you say so..." Kaibi shrugged" I wouldn't pick Railgun for the ojou-sama role model though. If she is a model lady, then I am a king of France"
(MEANWHILE)
A certain chestnut-haired head perked up.
"Achoo!"
Misaka Mikoto's sneeze echoed throughout the room, causing Kuroko to peak out of the bathroom.
"Onee-sama? Is everything alright?"
"Oh? Yeah, Kuroko, everything is okay." Mikoto waved with a light smile" I just sneezed. Something probably tickled my nose, that's all"
Kuroko's eyes lit up.
'A chance!'
"You say that, but as always, you are working hard, onee-sama! That sneeze just now can be an announcer of a nasty cold..."
She jumped into the air, with her arms wide opened.
"... so let your loving Kuroko warm you up with her body to prevent iiiiiiiiiiigh?!"
Last word was distorted through electricity-infused punch that connected with a twintailed girl and sent her spinning straight into the wall.
"Like hell I believe you that you will only stop at that!" Mikoto yelled, scattering sparks around.
Kuroko slowly peeled from the wall and tumbled onto the ground
'Hah... onee-sama is as vehemently in denial as ever... oh, being a warrior of love is no easy task. When it comes to onee-sama, I shall never give up, but still... I wonder... if Kamijou was cold and I offered to warm him up... w-what would he do?'
Kuroko was left to ponder at that thought, that used to be almost blasphemous to her.
(BACK TO CONFRONTATION WITH NAGATENJOUKI GIRLS)
"That's not good, not good at all. If anything, that's all of the more reason to confront... what's your name?"
"Kankyougami Hasako. Written as 'Environment Goddess' and 'Child of Origin'. A pleasure to make your acquaintance"
"Katsuma Raiha. Written as 'Fiery wife' and 'Lightning blade'. Kankyougami-san, why are you associating with Tokiwadai?"
"Oh? Why wouldn't I? Is there a reason why I shouldn't?"
"Tokiwadai is our rival" other girls vigorously nodded at Raiha's words" It's full of pompous, know it all snobs, who are bunch of elitarist primadonnas. They act superior in every domain, even though we are the best and accept people from every level. Why is that? Because it's from our school that hails the greatest, the most powerful, the most extraordinary of espers..."
"ACCELERATOR-SAMA!" all the Nagatenjouki girls squealed with delight.
'... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... huuuuuuuuh ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...'
Hamazura, Maidono and Kaibi looked blankly at suddenly emotional... and seemingly aroused crowd of girls, while Hasako blinked, innocently clueless what was going on.
"You girls... like... Accelerator?" Hamazura asked.
"What's not to admire? He was our school's pride before he went his own way. He was determined, fierce, relentless... he's an inspiration, a pinnacle of esper greatness, and the most efficient and non-nonsense male ever... so hoooooot..."
The wave of sighs followed.
"Even though he committed major crimes?" Kaibi raised a point, that was quickly dismissed by Raiha.
"Accelerator-sama is a complex individual and it can take a liftetime to truly grasp his greatness. Good, evil, it's all trifle when it comes to this complexity. Even thinking about it is beyond our mere minds. Especially for those idiots in Tokiwadai, who fell for some bland simpleton. I heard that he is someone who charges forward like an idiot with no sophistication. It's like some sort of disease, but me and the girls will remain faithful and loyal to Accelerator-sama."
"Oi, this guy you are talking about is..."Hamazura raised his voice, but stopped, sensing the tension around him.
The fancy metal cup in front of Maidono twisted and bent, like a tube of used paste. Utensils on the table began to shake and the ominous straining sound came from the very construction of the building they were in.
At the same time, Hasako got up and walked away. Her arms were slightly trembling.
"H-Hey!"
Everybody followed her outside, confused by the girl's reaction
"After what you said, you are going to chicken out? You are shaking, but you can just admit that you don't want to fight, you know"
Hasako stopped and went silent for a couple of seconds.
"Katsuma-san, was it... allow me to clarify something... What you see isn't fear. My body..."
The world suddenly changed. The temperature shot up as the ground crackled with veins of molten foliage, just barely contained within the soil.
Hasako slowly turned around, the light from the small-sized volcanic environment casting a shadow on her face and pronouncing intense and furious gaze in her multicolour eyes.
"... is trembling with anger. And I took it outside to not cause harm to establishment"
"M-Magma? But my info said you were a freezing- EEP?!"
Something shot forward and stopped centimeters before Raiha's face.
The chopstick hovered in place for a second before returning to Maidono's extended hand.
"I can't use chopsticks. This honestly sucks. But thanks to this ridiculously boosted power, they have other uses." she said, strolling to Hasako's side, not minding the heat around her" Conviniently, I am no ojou-sama. So I can for example use it to send it to the place where sun doesn't reach when I hear some girls badmouthing a real man, who gave me purpose and happiness away from darkness"
"Earlier, it was only about us." Hasako agreed, speaking coldly" But if you put shame on the name of man I love, there is no forgiveness."
"I would advise against confronting us. After all... you are weak" equally irritated Maidono spoke with a smirk on her face.
Hamazura's jaw dropped, as the faces of Nagatenjouki girls get pale from anger.
'They badmouthed boss and it already escalated like crazy!'
"My my, that's quite rude, Hoshimi-san" Hasako laughed at that. However, there was no warmth in her chuckle" It's more proper to say that we are simply stronger. Then that's no direct offense to them."
"DON'T THINK YOU'VE ALREADY WON! YOU ARROGANT-"
As Raiha was almost exploding in anger, Hamazura looked at Kaibi
"You are not stopping them?"
Kaibi looked at him with a hint of danger in her eyes.
"Measure Heart is not suited for fighting multiple people at once. I will have to wait for them to be more divided. And I can't injure them since I promised him to better myself. If not for that, I would tore those fools apart by now. So I am not stopping them"
Hamazura sighed and turned to Takitsubo.
'Damn, does this mean that Tokwiadai and Nagatenjouki, the most rival and elite schools, are basically the harem's of the boss and Accelerator. Tch, I know I have Takitsubo... but the knowledge that some institution took my up as an icon wouldn't be so bad. Maybe a maid school. Or a bunny girl club...'
"Well, Takitsubo, I guess things will get quite ug... Takitsubo?"
His girlfriend was staring intently at Hasako.
"I see now... it's beautiful..."
"What is?"
"Before I thought that I couldn't see her AIM field. But now I understand... I was simply too close to see its full potential..."
In the eyes of Takitsubo, there was a vast and wondrous curtain of light, covering great space around Hasako, fluctuating and shifting, beaming with power and might.
"This AIM field... is out of this world. I thought Mugino's was powerful... but I never saw the one so big and majestic. I can't... tell if it seems safe or dangerous. It looks warm... but also perilous. Like a sleeping force of nature, too strong to be contained, sent from the heaven"
Hamazura whistled at the uncommonly enthusiastic comment from the girl.
"So one thing for sure. This will not be boring"
(HOURS LATER)
Accelerator sighed, massaging his head, before glaring at people gathered with his crimson eyes.
Raiha, Maidono, Hasako, Touma, and Kaibi all winced when she spoke.
"So... who the fuck thought any of that mess was good idea?"
"She challenged us" Maidono pointed at Raiha." And said we could go all out"
"And you thought of doing that? Do you even have brains?" Accelerator switched documents on the tablet he had in his hand" So let me recap: They challenged you to sneak into Nagatenjouki and take the school's official flag, while you had to defend your own item in the park 10 kilometers away and prevent it from being taken. Is that correct?"
"Yes, it is"
"Maidono Hoshimi, you ventured out and used your ability to incapacitate the students guarding the rear entrance..."
'A street sign on the outside of the tall wall split itself an in two and wrapped around unsuspecting girl, just as the ground caved in under the boy accompanying her. With a giddy grin, Maidono Hoshimi sprinted past them, lifting a boom barrier with a swing of her arm...'
"Meanwhile you, Kankyougami Hasako, was tasked with defense. She was attacked in the afforementioned park by the group of over 50 students...'
'Hasako looked from her cup of tea as the grup of over 4 dozen students, mainly female, started to advance to get the improvised flag, next to her.'
"As one can deduce, Nagatenjouki split up to offensive and defensive team as well. A part of it suddenly decided they didn't want to fight..." Accelerator glanced at Kaibi, who innocently became very interested in her accessories" The offensive team got knocked out in an instant without even getting close to Kankyougami Hasako. The reading of atmospheric pressure detected as a change of weather similar to extremely high altitude. One that is usually encountered in bloody Himalayas"
Hasako calmly nodded.
"Curiously, the defensive team also passed out. And pissed themselves from frar I wonder why..."
Maidono nervously licked her lips and chuckled awkwardly.
"Y-Yeah..."
"Maybe because someone lifted the entire main campus building of Nagatenjouki into the air and moved it kilometers away with a help..." Accelerator looked at Hamazura, who started whistling and focusing on the fragment of the glass barrier"... of someone who could drive"
'Maidono raised her index finger into the air. The ground cracked and with a roar, the big building of Nagatenjouki Academy rose high into the air. The girl then angled her finger slightly lower, and the structure moved downward, obeying her command.'
"Well, to be quite clear, it was said that I had to get the flag inside the zone. They never mentioned that I had to take the flag out of the building. Besides I took extra care to levitate it back without damaging it"
"You will still need to help with reconnecting all the installations"
"But-"
"No. Discussion!"
"Y-Yes, sir"
"Accelerator, I will make sure to talk to them afterwards" Touma assured.
Accelerator looked at him, before shaking his head, and giving a curt nod, before focusing on Raiha.
"AND YOU! What the hell? You are the student of damn Nagatenjouki of all places. Why the hell are you still doing this stupid shit even though I left years ago?"
"Accelerator-sama, your strength and glory is forever in memory of the girls. Our souls and... bodies, are ready for your commands"
"Then how about 'fuck off'?! Keep doing senseless crap like stirring up fights, in my name nonethless, and I will use my ability on you to teach you how to fly! Are we fucking clear?"
"Y-You scolded me. A-Accelerator-sama scolded me! And he even considered me worthy of being subjected to his glorious power!" Raiha muttered, cupping her red cheeks with a smile on her face.
Accelerator's eye twitched, as Touma chuckled behind his back.
"You never told me you were popular with the girls"
"I was not. I want to burry those idiots in the deepest, darkest corner of my memory. Those brats don't know what they are talking about, nor do they understand single actual thing about me. So don't you fucking dare compare me to yourself, hero! Alright, you are lucky that Nagatenjouki needs renovation anyway and they take partial responsibility for all of this. That's all, you can go for now."
When everyone left, Touma looked at three girls in front of him.
"You really did that because they were slandering me? I wouldn't mind, let people talk what they want"
"You see the problem is... that we care. No one is speaking about you with us present" Kaibi stated firmly.
"She said it. If someone says stuff like that about you, I am kicking his ass" Maidono affirmed.
"I will not allow anyone to spread such things without even knowing how wonderful you are" Hasako nodded with unprecedented fervour.
"It would be best if you didn't go engaging in challenges like this one" Touma spoke, before his face softened" But... it's nice to know that there are people who are willing to fight for me. For the most of my life, I didn't have that. So even though Accelerator would probably be pissed that I told you that... thank you."
(BACK TO THE PRESENT)
Two girls sighed and looked at each other.
"We probably got a little bit carried away there... but that's being in love for you"
"Mhm. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world, as dully as this might sound."
"So... what will we do next?"
"How about we go sunbathing? It will be great for your health. I can alter the climate if you want"
"That sounds cool, but I think I would eat something first"
Just when they took off to the kitchen, there was another doorbell sound.
"Huh? Someone else is coming?"
A girl in the door had violet hair and similarly tinged eyes. Both Maidono and Hasako recognized her.
"Mitori-san? What are you doing here?"
"I-I can ask the same? Where is Kamijou? I was told he lives here and I didn't have the opportunity to come earlier..."
"Not here. He's on the trip and let us stay here for a moment"
"I see... w-well, I have something to give to him, b-but..."
"That's a card to his school library. But... why would you have it?"
"E-Ehm... well, I sort of... bumped into him... and then I found this..."
So Mitori said. But the actual story was a bit more descriptive than that.
(A WEEK EARLIER)
While waiting for the bus, Kamijou Touma heard a familiar voice
"Hi, Kamijou-san"
"Oh? Kouzaku-san, how are you?"
"You can call me Mitori-san now. I am fine, and right now, I am going to be on my way to pick up some of the Dolly's medical exam results. You?"
"Additional course with my teacher. I really like her... but because it's due to my absences... such misfortune..."
Mitori chuckled at that.
"What? Does this Kamijou really strike you as the type to leave the school often?"
"To be honest, you do. But..." Mitori's lips curled into a smile" that is not necessarily a bad thing"
A moment of silence, before...
"Mitori-san... about last time when we..."
"O-Oh, that? Don't worry about it, I don't mind... I mean, it's alright... let's just... carry our relationship on not minding that mistake. Look, the bus is here..."
So they said.
So why... just why...
Five minutes later, two pairs of eyes looked at each other, blinking.
Kamijou Touma would never predicted that on the next stop there would be a literal wave of people swarming the bus. He would never predict that he and Mitori would be squished to the window, and have their lips smashed against each other... again. Only this time, it was Touma who was pressed against a surface and the violet haired girl was against a much heavier and older student, who not only couldn't move (because there was little to none space left) but also could barely register that the girl tried to pull back.
Seriously? He could barely believed in that alignement of events
Talk about an absurd deja vu...
And thus, they once again got stuck with the tongues inside the other's mouths, with each movement making them painfully aware of that. Thankfully they could breathe through their noses or else they would get as purple as Mitori's hair.
They only managed to shift themselves, so they were squished partially to the window.
And in retrospect, that was probably not such a smart move.
Upon a stop on the traffic lights, Touma saw something on the edge of his vision.
Shokuhou Misaki and Misaka Mikoto stared at them open-mouthed from the other side of the street. The bus went on the move again and started to disappear around the corner before Mikoto screamed something loudly.
The next events were a blur. A small explosion occurring, bus stopping, and people exiting in panic, with Touma grabbing Mitori's hand and trying to find the way to the exit before tripping and falling under the multitude of legs and bodies.
Touma woke up in the alley near the road. Sitting next to him was Hokaze Junko, discussing something with very vocal Misaki and Mikoto. Sitting by the wall was very red and meek-looking Mitori.
"Hokaze-san, why on earth did we find you... k-kissing that idiot?!" Mikoto spoke. She didn't call Touma 'an idiot' nearly as frequently as she used to, so reverting to it only showed how agitated she was.
"I was walking to meet with my Queen" surprised Junko went on with explanation, looking at Misaki" when I saw that bus going around the street corner with smoke going from the back"
"Oh, that's from that lovely lightning spear you sent after it, Misaka-san"
"T-That's only because I was so mad... I said I was sorry..."
"I went on to check if I could help and then, when people were exiting quickly, I noticed Kamijou-san, on the ground, and Mitori-san next to him. He was accidentally trampled. I took them to safety. But Kamijou-san wasn't breathing so after doing a heart massage and facilitated his breathing... and thankfully, his respiration resumed"
Touma was reminded that he felt someone filling his lungs with air. It turned out that the kiss was an innocent action performed to help him.
"Facilitated his breathing, you say..." Misaki groaned" I am so jealou... I mean, it's good that he is alright... as for you, Mitori-san..."
"Mizagi-zan, iz nod wad u wink..."
"D-D-Did you kiss him for so long that your tongue and mouth got numbed?!" Mikoto reddened and sparked while saying that.
"Huh? What does tongue have to do with kissing?"
When Misaki turned to her ever-pure right hand, her starry eyes widened.
"He... he is gone..."
Sensing immidiate danger, Kamijou Touma disappeared as quickly as he could after his awakening, leaving the group of girls alone with themselves.
(BACK TO THE PRESENT)
"It... It's nothing, really. I-I just found it after the incident and wanted to get it back to..."
"Oh? Kongou-san, it appears we are not the only ones who thought about paying a visit"
A familiar trio of girls appeared in the long corridor of the ninth floor of apartment complex.
"Kongou-san? Wannai-san? Awatsuki-san? What are you doing here?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Spreading her fan, Kongou struck a pose" Why of course, I am here to visit my beloved darling. And gift him with food"
"It might be sudden..." Wannai added with a small blush on her part" But in truth, we all agree that we miss Kamijou-san's company a bit. The time without him is a lot harder to pass since we all got involved with him. I for once can't wait to spend more time with him and make great memories."
"Oh, it's Mitori-san! Did you come for a visit too?"
"Yeah, but apparently, Kamijou is not here. Those two are watching his apartment for him"
"Oh, I see." Kongou did not hide disappointment in her voice" Well, then at very least, can you try my cooking? This way I will be able to surprise him next time and have some valuable information on the taste."
"I think I am with Kongou-san on this" added Awatsuki" We all know each other from the rescue action of Mitsuari-san. But it would be very nice to acquaint ourselves with one another a little better."
"Wow... it's one person after the other" Maidono muttered, before Hasako shot her a glare and welcomed the group of girls into the apartment, including still embarrassed Mitori.
"Let's see... let's see..."
Maidono looked at dish that Kongou prepared.
"Wow, this is... one of the most exquisite omurice I ever seen. Is this... caviar?"
"Oh, is it too little? I thought it would be a nice addition on the side?"
The notably richest of the girls in the room seemed to be adorably unaware of sheer scope of exquisite ingredients she used.
But as for the dish itself...
"It's edible... and that's mostly it. It's too salty for one thing, if I am going to be constructively critical" Maidono said sagely.
"B-But I simply cannot fail when it comes to this! Kongou Mitsuko must not allow herself to be inferior in culinary skills. What kind of wife to my darling would that make me?"
"Firstly, Kongou-san, I think you are getting a little bit ahead of things" Awatsuki smiled at one of her best friends" Besides, I think we all have different talents and can give Kamijou-san something that we feel comfortable with"
Wannai shook her head.
"While I understand what you mean, Awatsuki-san, I think it's sweet for Kongou-san to try her hardest. Don't worry, Kongou-san. We will stick together and support you in your endeavour. Even if it's not what you want now, there is always a room for improvement"
"I couldn't agree with you more, Wannai-san." Hasako looked at Kongou with encouragement" If you want to, I can cook alongside you and help you prepare great surprise dish for Touma."
"Truly?" Kongou grasped Hasako's hands with her own, with a small blush of happiness on her face" That's wonderful. I shall bestow upon you Kongou family recipes... i-if you help me make them edible"
"It will be my pleasure"
"In the meantime, who wants to have something to drink?"
The doors shut themselves behind the guests. Maidono opened the cupboards with a motion of a finger, and sent cups in front of girls sitting by the table.
As Maidono made tea, Kongou and Hasako also dressed up for the cooking.
"Oh my gods!" cooed Wannai, looking at apron-wearing Kongou, with her hair tied up." You look so amazing in this apron!"
"Kankyougami-san doesn't fall behind either. Such a motherly aura!"
"T-Thank you. I am not sure if I am worthy of such praise"
"Nonsense. If Kamijou-san saw you two now, he would ascend to high heavens from beholding your beauty"
"Speaking of Kamijou... in the meantime, who wants to tell some takes on him?" asked Maidono.
"Takes?"
"Oh, you know. Some stories?"
"Well, Awatsuki-san definitely has something to tell. You see, two weeks ago..."
"W-Wannai-san... that's not really..." Awatsuki weakly tried to protest, but her friend was already too excited to stop.
"Back then, Awatsuki-san's father visited the city. He happened to saw them together and took Kamijou-san on a tour of one of his factories. But Kamijou-san would rather spend time with Awatsuki-san, so her father got upset and impatient, which caused Kamijou-san to punch-"
"Wait, Wannai-san" Awatsuki sighed and spoke up" Let's clear things up. Myself and Kamijou-san indeed met as I returned to Tokiwadai on my evening off. Since he enjoys my buoyancy manipulation, I wanted to run on the river for his enjoyment. However, on the way there, we met my father and one of my younger brothers. And in that moment... I didn't know he was in town and my relationship with him is a bit complicated. He is a director of big heavy machinery industry and Academy City uses some of his technology for construction processes. He visits the factories from time to time to ensure that everything goes smoothly. He is always really invested in it and considered it his greatest achievement. But... he never believed that I could carry on after him. He never wanted a daughter, so he didn't quite know how to interact with me. Upon meeting Kamijou and hearing he was acquainted with me, father gladly switched his attention from me to him and using the fact that I supposedly met a gentleman, he wanted to talk him into getting involved with me so he would get a successor through law. I admit, that made me feel uncomfortable. But Kamijou-san said he wanted to rather go to the river with me. My father did not quite like the rejection of his offer, so Kamijou-san said that he would go if I was invited since it was de facto my business to inherit. My father probably did not have explicit intention of doing so, but he laughed off the idea that a girl could do anything on her own in our family industry. Kamijou-san said nothing for a moment, before clenching his fist... and smashing it on the wall next to him. Apparently, he killed a fly. But my father was so startled that he allowed us to be on our way..."
Awatsuki got quiet and smiled longingly, before chuckle from Maidono Mitori, who managed to calm her emotions after her own flashback, smirked at the ojou-sama.
"If that's the face you made while looking at him in that moment, then... oh boy"
"W-W-Whatever do you mean?! I-I just admired how courageous he was and how valiant... he... has the gift to make me feel special with both my strength and femininity. I love this feeling."
"I totally get what you mean. And I wouldn't be surprised if he actually wanted to fight in that moment. He is totally for equality, not scared to hit anyone."
The conversation went on about whacky situations revolving around Touma, before Kongou and Hasako emerged victorious from their battle to make a great lunch.
"Curry and vegetables for everyone!"
Just then, there was a loud knocking on the door.
"It's me! I managed to come back earlier!"
Maidono peaked outside and then twisted her wrist while pointing at the door lock.
It clicked and a girl with ebony ringlet curls, Kumokawa Maria, marched happily inside.
"Ya-hoo! Oh, wow... suddenly, there is a whole lot more of us!"
She then sniffed the air and gasped.
"Don't tell me that you cooked something without me. No, I can't let this stand. I shall prepare something as well."
"B-But you don't have to-"
"Hah! It's a shame for a maid to not prepare something in the gathering like this. I won't take no for an answer"
(LATER...)
"I don't know what to choose..." Mitori mused over the leftovers of the tasty dishes they all ate" Curry was delicious, but those crepes Kumokawa-san made... I felt as if I was tasting..."
"Kamijou-san's dishes?" Wannai finished the question" Yes, I got this sensation as well"
"Well, that's because we are culinary rivals and competitors. I like to think I have a bit of him inside me thanks to that"
The phrasing caused the rest of the girls, especially the rather sheltered Tokiwadai students, to look at carefree maid in training as if she grew a second head.
"You mean his... you have a bit of his experience, right? What exactly is your relationship with him, Maria-san?"
"Well, my sister is all over him, even though she acts all mature. And over time, I found him interesting too, because he helped me got on my feet... and ever since, I was just popping in and out, cooking with him..."
"Oh, so you are friend-"
"... he is also rather hot, so..."
Wannai's statement died down in her throat. Hasako chuckled gently.
"I think we shouldn't delude ourselves into thinking someone here isn't interesting in Touma-san in some manner. However, I think we should talk about it in a better environment. A one I can happily provide"
(HALF AN HOUR LATER, AT THE POOL COMPLEX)
A big pool hall was converted into a miniature desert. Seven girls were laying around on the sunbeds, with one of them letting out a sigh of delight. Hasako created a desert environment for all of them to warm themselves and chat over drinks.
"Your ability is simply marvellous, Kankyougami-san. How do you do it?"
"Well, my AIM field can spread itself on a very wide area and acts similar to threads, if threads could stitch over reality. My ability 'weaves' itself into preexisting environment and modifies it in accordance to the most optimal condition for the DNA of the certain living organism, from bacterium to blue whale. It used to calibrate only to the advantage for closest animal, but I got better in controlling its outcome if I have a stash of DNA samples on me. That's my glass necklace. But it's not a simple ability. It consumes energy, especially when spread over large area or switched in rapid succession"
"Sounds both beautiful and dangerous at the same time" mused Mitori.
"That's a very good description. Apparently, thanks to my power, I can even survive black hole or Big Bang in right condition, not to mention having the ability to terraform lifeless environments. But each of my environments can be potentially dangerous for every creature other than one it was designated for. It's purely accidental though, as my ability is neutral in nature..."
"You said you had multiple environments? Which one is the most powerful?"
"Powerful? I don't think about them in such categories. Each can be beneficial or harmful, depending on the creature that is subjected to it. But for humans as reference point, well... I do have an environment that removes all oxygen from the air. If I don't let go, I can damage someone's brain. Your sister, Maria-san, took the trouble to collect DNA of many creatures for me. Just in case of emergencies, she said. One of the newer additions is anglerfish, that creates incredible pressure upon the affected area. One of the most destructive forces can come from my own saliva... d-don't laugh, Hoshimi, you know what I am taking about. By designating digestive bacteria, I can create seas of acid."
"Can we see some of them?"
"Oh, I don't know..."
"Please?"
Hasako closed her eyes with a smile, and in the next moment...
The sand got covered in the quickly with a snow, as freezing wind blew on the enclosed space.
"T-The fact that temperature changes too is incredible!"
"So cold!" Maria said, her teeth chattering
Kongou, to this point spread on her sunbed in a diva-like fashion, fell over on the gust of arctic gale, and then sneezed due to her body being suddenly chilled.
Then, the environment changed again, with hot water bublling from the ground and shooting upwards.
"Ah... hot! Hot! The ground is hot!" Kongou shot up, trying not to stay in one place for too long." Water! Water!"
"This seems strangely familiar" Wannai smiled at Awatsuki
The scenery changed once again, with humidity growing and resembling more the one found in tropical rainforest.
The rain showered the girls before Hasako shook her head
"I believe that's enough"
And just like that, environment became desert-like again.
The girls laid down in silence for a moment, before ever talkative Maidono addressed Kongou.
"You proactively came here to surprise Touma... does it mean that you want to get serious with him?"
Kongou blinked, before laughing in a sincere and happy manner.
"Whenever was I not serious about darling? But you do have a point, I wanted this culinary surprise to be a mere prelude to something far greater... eh-ekhm..."
Kongou Mitsuko coughed, evidently wanted to share something important with them. Other girls diverted their attention to the Aero Hand user.
"Ever since I met darling... that is, Kamijou Touma... there was a change occurring within me, and within my heart. At first I could not fully understand what that change was and what it entail, but after some time, I began to realize it by understanding what I feel because of him. All my life I could, and often had, everything I could have. I felt like I should only strive for best and expect the best out of life. But only you, my friends, and Kamijou Touma gave me the sense of meaning in my status and wealth. Never in my life I was so happy about the abundance of resources I have now and I will inherit in the future. Each time I think about my darling, gratitude grows in my heart to the point when I can hardly contain it. Ever since I got truly acquainted with him and recognize my feelings of affection, he was nothing but courageous and kind towards me, even without the finesse of higher social circles. For all I possess, he has almost nothing. Yet even with as little as this, whenever we got together, through plan or chance, I always felt like he wanted best for me. Truly, genuinely cared for my comfort, my humour, my well-being. And even my efforts to make it even paled in comparison to this sincerity, this amazing heart that he possesses. Before I knew it, my efforts weren't only to make him woo me using my charm. Instead, I wanted to perfect my body and mind for him as well. So one day he can have the best experience, choosing Kongou Mitsuko as the finest. Whenever I am with him, I am feeling that I learn or feel something new, and this makes me want to do something for him. It's like a fortunate twist of fate that I have the possibility to be generous to him. Even if he doesn't like attention, I am surely capable of finding something that will make him happy. All the world's riches... I want to offer them to him. Whether it's my own self, my financial ability, or any other thing... sharing it with him is something I really desire. He connected me to myself and to my friends more than ever before, and is supporting me in my endeavour to sustain my friendships, despite and through the differences our statuses bring. It's pretty obvious that I am already quite magnificent. However, for darling, the present state is simply not enough. Even though he might say to just let it be, or that he won't care, I will do my utmost to make him happy, in the way of my own making: with pride, loyalty, and charm"
Kongou's exuberant speech got ovation from Wannai, who clapped her hands with a cheerful smile.
"Bravo! I am so happy for your resolve, Kongou-san!"
Maidono frowned and looked at the brunette from behind her sunglasses that she wore for the warming on the desert.
"That's all well and cool, but one thing doesn't add up. I don't question your generosity, but you looked as if you had motif that is actually because of your personal desire... that you would like from him"
Kongou didn't say anything for a moment. Then she coughed into her hand, blushing slightly and looking away while pretending to be cool and collected
"T-Truth is... I promised myself to not pursue... p-path of intimacy with darling, because I wanted to be at peak of my beauty and seduce the soul out of him with it... but recently, something creeps into my mind and because of it I can't find any rest or refuge. I try to ignore it but it only makes it worse. It gets to the point when I can't sleep and both myself and Ekaterina just roll around the bed and terrarium respectively, because we are both active at night through that. And what I desire is to... os... osculate"
Maidono looked at Hasako.
"Oscu what?"
"That's a very formal way of saying 'to kiss'" her ojou-sama friend explained.
Mitori choked on air and hid her face from view. Luckily for her, no one paid her mind.
"Yeah, seems like our forehead-chan to use convoluted words to hide her embarrassment"
"So what should I do to-"
"YES!"
Everyone looked in confusion at Wannai, who got beet red and covered her face.
"I-I am sorry, I just imagined k-kissing with Kamijou-san... and it just sort of slipped out. I-I am sorry, I just thought I was the only one... since you were so collected..."
"You should not hide your feelings, Kongou-san. Confidence is one thing, but Touma gathers too much attention to just sit and wait. If you want to kiss him, you should be firm and suggest it in the most obvious way possible that would not scare him away."
"Hmm... since it got hot already, I heard that there is an option to order a massage in the adjacent spa. Who is with me?"
(AFTER THE MASSAGE TREATMENT)
The girls were on the way back to the apartment
"I must say Maidono-san, your legs are amazing" Kumokawa Maria seemed to find a common topic with Maidono.
During the massages girls had the chance to truly look at each other's bodies, and some were keen on sharing the observations
" Long, toned, and without any unnecessary excess lipids. Not to mention that amazing belly. It's not that it looks like an hourglass, it's as if hourglasses could be constructed with you as the model"
The girl with a dark-brown bob-cut seemed to be genuinely content with the praise and wasn't far behind.
"Yours are great too. Great musculature, but not excessively visible, strong, but also soft and pleasant in touch."
"Well, I do fight with them. Kapoeira made them really powerful. But while it is possible to crush someone's head between my thighs, I believe they have better uses..."
"..."
"..."
"You just imagined giving him a thigh sandwich, didn't you?"
"I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. By the way, is that a C-cup?"
"I didn't measure it for quite some time, and I probably am still growing. I may hit the D soon"
"Well, as D-cup myself, and looking at my onee-chan I must say-"
"Must be nice..."
A quiet voice of Hasako caused them to turn around.
They looked at the girl's chest.
"H-Hasako-san, that is still a... B...ish... cup... I think..."
"You have beautiful eyes and hair and those slender hands... aaaaaand your gaze is becoming more and more lifeless by the second, please come back to us!"
After few moments, Wannai asked the question
"Maidono-san, pardon if I am being overly intrusive... but I heard that you suffered a lot through inability to eat via chopsticks. Hearing it made me very sad. Is there anything that can be done to help it?"
Maidono looked at her cautiously, but the fluffy haired girl appeared genuinely concerned. She sighed and looked forward with melancholic smile.
"It... It bothers me. And it used to bother me even more. You are right, because my power was boosted, I lost most of the mobility in four fifth of my upper fingers, that is, all fingers beside my index fingers that alter my ability. Not only it made it difficult to eat, and through that socialize normally, but I got complexes when it comes to romantic life..."
"Romantic? Whatever do you mean?" Awatsuki asked in confusion.
Maidono was once again confronted with how sheltered and innocent Tokiwadai ladies were at times.
"Well... when it comes to ones hands, there are certain uses that transcend beyond prehensile manipulation of objects... such as certain forms of touch before and during intimate contact..."
"Oh, I understand! It must be awful not to be able to caress someone's face"
When confronted with such a purity, Maidono gave up on conveying a slightly more blush-inducing uses that she had in mind.
"Yes, and through the limitations I had, I thought of myself as a lesser woman and developed obsession about chopsticks that embodied my insecurities in physical form. But..."
"But?"
"Touma showed me more important things around myself, and more important positive qualities of myself. Because of him, I embraced the power I once resented. If my life got awful because of it, then I have all the right to explore my telekinesis to the fullest, make up for my loss. Because I wanted to make him proud of how I developed, I trained myself, and got much more precise and sophisticated in my control. He freed me from the worst possible prison: my own mind. Oh, and ever since then... I focus on my legs and torso. If I can't charm with my hands, there are other manners."
"Speaking of hands, Hasako-san has most beautiful palms" Kongou nodded, as they approached and stopped in front of the staircase" So delicate and dignified. I believe it's called pianist hands?"
"Well, I suppose there can be some logic behind it, since I can play the piano..." Hasako spoke shyly, playing with her hair.
"What? You play? You never told me that!"
"I guess there never was a proper occasion."
"Liar! We were on some parties before. You are just shy, aren't you? Admit it, what can you play? You are a genius, so I doubt there can be only one"
"S-Stop it Hoshimi, you're making me blush. And to tell you the truth, my memory is a bit foggy, but I think that my mother imparted that knowledge on me. I can play koto, shamisen, piano, and harp."
"You really would be excellent addition to Tokiwadai. I am sure everything would love you. How about joining my clique?" Kongou said to Hasako.
She meant it half in joke. Although her initial dream of making the clique that she had upon transferring to Tokwadai still stood, she wouldn't count on Hasako joining her when there were many more developed cliques out there, Shokuhou Misaki's being prime example.
However, the environment manipulator smiled gently and bowed to Kongou.
"While I am not affiliated with Tokiwadai, I would be delighted"
"R-Really? I mean, I understand that my natural charm can be hard to forget, but... can I know your motivation? You are more powerful than me, I am reasonable enough to admit that. You also don't seem to be swayed by money or influence"
"The reason, Kongou-san, is that because of you I see that ladies of this era still have splendour and light in their hearts. Your heart is of noble nature. You made me very happy, just like Mitsuari-sama did before. Even if I won't be affiliated in this 'clique' you speak of, I would be delighted to be your friend. I should have formally propose this much earlier."
"O-Oh. I... I would love that!"
Kongou, Wannai, and Awatsuki, as well as Kouzaku Mitori, departed soon afterwards for their respective dorms, promising to stay in touch.
(ONE HOUR LATER, AT KAIUZMI TSUGOTOSHI'S OFFICE)
Kumokawa Seria frowned, typing her fingers away at the keyboard of her computer. Her boss got up and cleared his throat.
"Kumokawa-san?"
"Mmm..."
"I am closing for the night."
"Mmm..."
"You... are not even listening to me, are you?"
In the next moment, there was a silent 'ping' from Seria's phone
"Oh? Maybe it will interest you that one Kamijou Touma just sent you a message"
"Huh?"
Seria snatched her phone from behind the computer, only to see...
"Or not. That was from me. Now, my dear, don't look at me with such disdain, it's the only efficient way to snap you out this. As much as you want to look professional, you are always first in line when it comes to matters concerning that boy"
"Oh? Are you jealous?"
"With all the respect to your beauty, and not diminishing anything from Kamijou Touma's value to you, I am rich and got plenty of popularity in my life, so no, I am not. I simply want to advise you not to overwork yourself. You've been here almost the entire day. Don't stay up late"
Kumokawa sighed and then stretched on the chair, her chest bouncing slightly as a result.
"I wish it was that simple... I will try but I make no promises. This is extremely crucial case to crack. Do not worry, I know the way out. Have a good night."
Tsugotoshi looked at her for a moment, before nodding and exiting with a quiet 'Likewise'
Kumokawa brushed her hair aside and resumed her search.
"How could I stop now? What Hasako-san told me adds new elements to this mysterious patterns I am seeing around him for quite some time..."
On her computer, there various folders and images, including the one with a camera image of a strange sky blue-lemon yellow, dragon-like creature caught in flight over the streets of London, as well as reports from other places around the globe, folders with salvaged, top-secret documents, as well as scans with Kumokawa's own annotations.
Shibuya encounter with Bologna Succubus. Her fight with Tsuchimikado Motoharu. Mysterious attack on their school during the game of criminals and hostages. And now this Kamijou No Touma, that apparently split off from Kamijou Touma's main self. Adding his memory loss and power dwelling within his right hand...
It formed some construct of grand meaning, that Seria could almost grasp it, but it was still to vague and transluscent to be fully comprehended.
She clenched her fist. The characteristic of being a genius was that not knowing something bothered Seria immensely. Especially in such a vital area.
"Almost isn't good enough here. Not in his case. This time... it will be different..."
Kumokawa Seria fell in love with Kamijou Touma. And thus, she suffered immensely whenever he got into trouble out of the reach of her influence. Her breakdown after World War III could be a testimony of that. She wasn't the type to let it show outward, but she kept betting her intelligence against his misfortune. Unfortunately, she was losing far too much.
"There is nothing more frustrating..." she clenched her fist" than knowing so much, and not being able to prevent my predicitions... not being able to save even one person, the person you fell in love with... and that's why... I have to solve this, no matter what"
She began to write and gather more and more data, as she looked at the psychological profile she had of Touma's dark alter-ego.
"I will confront him and assure that this time, my kouhai will be safe and sound. No matter how cunning and tricky he might be, I will put all of my brain and body to show him his place."
She took a deep breath, clearing her mind from sudden agitation.
"Although I wish he made sweat from a different reason... I wonder how my precious little sister is doing? I didn't see a problem with her staying the night at his place with him being elsewhere, but that little devil in maid's clothes may still have her ideas. I managed to keep her away from him for long, and yet she found away to become acquainted anyway. She is my sister, and therefore, should not be underestimated. After all, he fits her type like a glove. And she tells me that I am the one who is convoluted in her feelings"
(MEANWHILE)
"Achoo!"
Kumokawa Maria sneezed while hitting the futon taken off the storage closet with carpet beater.
"Bless you, Maria-san. If you want, we can give you something else to sleep on"
"What? That's totally fine, what maid would I be if I was scared of dust? In fact, I hold the record for the fastest single room cleanup in my class, in category of horizontal surfaces, so I dust off this futon in a blink of an eye.
"What kind of competition you maids have?"
"You wouldn't believe in some of them for sure"
"Maria-san, I've been meaning to ask you for a while: why are you interested in Touma?"
Maria smiled, finishing the dusting and spreading the futon on the ground
"To not beat around the bush, I know about his power and the bad luck it brings. I read it in onee-chan's files once, when she wasn't looking. Besides the fact that I am grateful to him after he helped me after my sensei's death, I want to work for incompetent and hopeless master. And while Kamijou-san is not stupid, his misfortune makes it really a great field day for a maid like me. Besides, he is a great cook, fighter, and a lot cuter than he gives himself credit for. I want to protect such master with all of my ability. I know that onee-chan also worries about keeping him safe. She is the type to not show it, but I am certain this is how she feels"
Roughly half an hour later, three girls got down on the futons after Maria performed the tests on Hasako that her sister requested.
"Well, I had good fun talking to you. See you in the morning"
"Goodnight..."
"Goodnight..."
(15 MINUTES LATER)
"Hey..."
Maidono, who was drifting into sleep, was woken up by a voice from her left.
"M-Maria-san?"
"Take off your clothes!..."
Maidono's eyes momentarily became as big as dinner plates.
"Wha-"
"Then I will... wash and iron them... in the meantime would you have... a bath? A dinner? Or maybe... m-"
"Maria-san! What the hell?!" Maidono shook the black haired girl, who shot up while blinking sleepily.
"W-What? What's going on?!" she muttered
Maidono looked at Hasako who appeared undisturbed, and then back at Maria.
"Do you... talk in your sleep?"
"Oh, right, sometimes... but it's totally occasional."
"Okay then... goodnight"
"Nighty night"
(HALF AN HOUR LATER)
Kumokawa Maria was woken up by a crash.
She shot up to her legs and squinted her eyes just in time to see Maidono waving her hand and sending a lamp, which crashed into the wall.
"Maidono-sa- aabbgh?!"
A floating book smashed into Maria's face. She reddened before yelling
"Maidono-san!"
"Huh?! W-Why are you yelling? You will wake up Hasacchi"
"Do you happen to be a somnambulist?"
"W-Well... only if I have to go to the toilet during my sleep, really."
"And you always telekinetically trash the room?"
"It... is not the rule... but it depends on how many things I bump into"
"So... you can go to the toilet then. Good night... see you in the morning"
(HALF AN HOUR LATER)
"In the embrace of passionate love..."
Maidono's eyes opened up widely as the slightly off tune and mumble song started to be sung from next to her.
"... gifted to be me by the stars above..."
"..."
"...through the pain and death we will brave through..."
"!"
"...cause only I can love you true..."
"MARIA-SAN!"
"H-Hwah? What now?"
"What now? Why is there a musical going on right next to my ear?!"
"Oh, sometimes I..."
"Just... let me make you glass of milk"
(HALF AN HOUR LATER)
Maidono sighed as Maria finally appeared to breathe calmly and be asleep this time around.
"Good grief. She really claimed it's only occasional... maybe Touma's bad luck rubbed off me..."
"You also lifted the additional blanket off of her in your sleep"
Maidono turned up to see Hasako wide awake.
"Let me guess, you were awake through this whole time"
"Sometimes I think I have enough sleeping for one life. Decades of it in fact. How are you feeling?"
"Good, almost perfect. I always healed up fast"
"That's great"
Hasako looked outside of the window, to the moon shining on the sky
"I love the night time. It would be such a delight to stroll on the moonlit road, bathed in a glow of silver light, with stars above and wind whistling in the grass and trees. In my time, sky was a lot easier to observe. I miss it a little bit."
Maidono nodded, as they both looked at the moon from their respective futons.
"I like it too. When I was... bullied, I liked the night because... in night, most people are equalized. No one is better than anyone and no one expects anything out of anyone. Everyone is just taken away by their dreams, being away, but also not actually dead. I felt safe during night time."
Hasako faced her with glimmer of sadness in her eyes.
"It's sad that your admiration for night's beauty hides such sorrow underneath"
"But it's the same for you. Hasako... were you... at least somewhat aware while in that frozen state?"
"I was mostly like a blank slate, my mind was a void. I didn't have... consciousness, in the proper sense of being able to react to anything. I couldn't even really frame a thought. However, there is still a lot to learn about how brain behaves in criostasis. Occasionally, my ego resurfaced enough to feel a glimpse of pain, tangled and hurtful memories, and complete desorientation. In that moment, in most basic of sensations, I realized I couldn't move or scream, and collapsed back into nothingness"
"And it was like this on repeat... for decades?! No wonder you got out partially insane and disoriented. Do you... have nightmares?"
"Sometimes. About not being able to move, to scream, to cry, and drowning into ice until it completely fills my lungs. But ever since I met Touma again, they backed away from my slumbers radically. One more thing I love him for"
"That makes the two of us. Remember the times we got out with him for real for the first time?"
"I don't think I will ever forget"
And as two friends laid wide awake, their memories started to play forth in their minds...
(MAIDONO'S STORY)
"Are you ready?"
"Sure am, sensei!"
"Then let's get you secured"
Maidono put multiple belts around Amazora, tying her to her own body couple times while placing the girl in a pouch-like device with limb holes on her back.
"Every belt is maximally pulled?"
"Yes ma'am!"
"Helmet on?"
"Yep!"
"Did you go to the toilet?"
"Twice, just in case!"
Maidono grinned. She checked the time and altitude clocks on her wrist, before pulling an pilot goggles on her eyes.
She extended her index fingers, tracing them through the air. The ground broke and part of it, resembling a spindle or surfboard, emerged, the bits of earth chipped off.
"Then let's go! Take off!"
They got on the floating spindle of earth, with Maidono lifting her fingers. It shot up to the sky and soared high above the street.
Airsurfing. It was an invention of Maidono that both she and Amazora absolutely loved.
While Maidono could fly on her own, it was energy consuming. Meanwhile, balancing on the spindle-like board wasn't draining at all and additionally was an excellent training for Maidono, who steered the board by using both of her index fingers, requiring both balance and precision in the input of telekinetic pressure.
They flew over several streets, a park, before finally reaching a skyscraper.
"Hold on!"
Maidono turned the board sharply upwards and flew upwards to the top of the building, with Amazora squealing excitedly.
But it only just began.
"Ready? We are about to truly fly"
"What are we waiting for?!"
"I was hoping you are going to say that!"
Maidono left the board on top of the building and shot up into the air herself. She flew high, higher than biggest skyscrapers, zig-zagging and spreading her arms. She was moving through space quickly, unbothered, unobstructed. Even if it could last for only 15 minutes, she and Amazora could reach the bottom of the clouds, as she moved through the air without any visible support.
Flight. An ability to move through the space without contact of any surface.
This time, it was Maidono who could not contain the scream of joy.
For her, there was no greater freedom than freedom of flight.
They dove and flew over the city, before finally landing next to the river.
Amazora's curls were blown to the back of her head, but she didn't seem to mind at all.
"That was amazing! But can't we do it longer."
"I used 10 minutes out of 15, it wasn't so bad. Any other day I would do it longer, but... in truth, I am... going to spend time with Touma. And I promised you a bag of sweets, so please, do not bother us. I know who overprotective you can get"
"Do not worry sensei. I will happily have you as my sis-in-law"
"Amazora, it doesn't work like... or maybe it... does... damn it, those dynamics with you and your siblings... anyway, let's get back to my place. I phoned someone for advise on the clothing for the chat created after battle with Veritas, let's see how it goes..."
(TWO HOURS LATER)
"Wow, that was tiresome..." Maidono sighed, waiting in front of Seventh Mist" I shouldn't involve 4 different people into this. Musujime-san had a suspiciously small collection of clothes that were actually our size and not smaller when it came to reference, Hokaze-san's suggestions were too sugary sweet, and as much as precious and awesome as a friend Hasacchi is, modern fashion can still be a mystery to her. I suppose only Mitsuari-san had a head on her shoulders when it came to that. But after taking partial advices from each of them, I ended up looking like this..."
Maidono wore a beige hoodie and amber T-shirt complimenting her eyes. Her hips were covered with a jeans with both legs cut, leaving her legs fully exposed, down until feet sporting the red sport shoes.
"Wow..."
Maidono turned around and saw Touma, who apparently just arrived and was shocked by her appearance.
"Hi there" Maidono smiled confidently and twirled around" So, how do I look?"
"Really, really nice. It's just... so you. You have a talent for casual clothing."
"I actually got help with this one, but it seems really worth it when I hear your opinion"
"Sh-Shouldn't you cover your legs though? You won't get cold, will you?"
Maidono laughed merrily at that.
"The chivalry is honestly cute in your way of thinking, but that would kind of defeated the whole reason for which they are un plain view. And the fact that you were observing them tells me that this strategy is successful. Now, let's go. I have few things planned for you"
And so they went to the shops. Firstly, Maidono took Touma to manga store. Even though she didn't read as much as he did, she was very much opened to suggestions and both she and the boy bought some positions after discussion about each other's story preferences.
Then Maidono did her own shopping, and while this part could have seemed tedious or boring for Touma, Maidono made sure to make it more interesting by personally modelling for few sets of clothes in front of the boy. However, due to the Touma's apparent fear of female clothing stores (Maidono could only imagine why) she wrapped her selection faster than anticipated.
After storing their purchases in special locker, they went to the batting cage. Maidono could not believed how much she laughed by the fact that Touma could not hit a single ball in span of 20 attempts. His frantic explanations about his bad luck only made her laugh harder. However, Touma got his revenge when Maidono, who could not fully grasp the bat with all of her fingers, found out swinging it using telekinetic control while also anticipating the ball was a lot harder than it looked. She even hit herself on the stomach on one occasion. Needless to say, they both exited the cage with nudging and laughing of each other's exasperation.
Then, they got their bags, exited the mall and headed outside. While heading to the park, they were consumed by the river of people on the street, which gave Maidono an opportunity to employ a part of her plan.
"Can you hold my hand?"
"Huh? Yes, but..."
"I don't want to be separated from you"
"Ah, right, of course..."
And so, at first unsurely, then more confidently, they found themselves holding hands.
They did so even after exiting the street and entering the park and Maidono could see why. If Touma was feeling half as good as she was in this situation, then he wouldn't let go of that warmth. It contrasted with a chilly outside air...
Wait, chilly outside air?
"The weather is getting worse" remarked Touma, as he looked at the clouds above the park" We might have to look for shelter"
Maidono could not help but feel sad. The forecast suddenly changed, and it seemed Touma was right, but she really wanted to walk with him for a while.
But just then... the wind died down, the clouds slowly parted, and the sun shone brightly. Hell, Maidono could even swear that the air became fresher.
"Huh? It got better? I guess weather really is unpredictable this time of year..."
Yeah, too unpredictable. Maidono looked around and noticed a branched ponytail disappearing behind the tree and rustling of the leaves, disappearing in the distance.
'Hasacchi... you were worried about the weather, so you secretly helped me by altering the park's environment. You really go out of your way to make sure I have fun. I could hug you senseless right now, I don't deserve having such a friend after everything I've done. Love you so much!'
From there on, their walk was undisturbed and peaceful, until they reached final stop planned by Maidono. The one she was secretly the most excited about.
It was a mixed-style, international restaurant she booked earlier in the morning. Nothing to fancy, but also better than your average sweet shop.
They sat down and ordered. Touma ordered pancakes while she opted for sushi.
Only when the course arrived, did Touma gasp.
"Wait? Aren't those shushi rolls supposed to be eaten with chopsticks?"
"Yes, they are. And eating them with fork will kind of ruin the experience... so I was wondering if you could... help me out here?"
"H-Help? You mean-"
Maidono opened her mouth and made a cutest 'aaah' sound she could muster.
"Please?"
"I guess it would be waste if you couldn't eat it at all...h-here goes..."
Firmly grasping the roll with his chopsticks, Touma reached forward and placed the food inside Maidono's mouth, with the girl waiting with her eyes closed.
She munched on it for a moment, before swallowing and smiling.
"Mmm, this sushi is delicious."
And so came the second, third, and subsequent rolls. The task of feeding eager Maidono meant that Touma had to focus on her lips for long periods of time. They were rather... distracting.
Finally, Maidono's sushi set was finished, with the girl beaming with joy
"Ah, that was nice."
She looked at Touma and then an idea came into her mind.
"Let me repay you."
"Repay me?"
Maidono pointed forward with her index fingers, causing fork and a knife on Touma's side to float.
"It's my time to feed you this pancake. Sushi is sushi and pancake is pancake, so there is no problem in western cutlery here."
"I can feed myself"
"No! Say 'aaah'"
"B-But..."
"No buts!" the floating part of the bumped few times into his lips" Now, open wide"
And so, slightly embarrassed was fed the cut and floating pieces of food conducted by Maidono's fingers. As for the girl herself, she admitted, to her surprise, that while she looked forward to be fed for some time now, feeding Touma was strangely relaxing and fulfilling to her.
Finally, Touma's food was also finished.
Maidono was about to call for the bill, but unexpectedly, the smiling waitress brought something to their table.
"Manager and myself found it very sweet how much of an endearing couple you are. That's why we decided to bring you this couple dessert: ice smoothie. On the house!"
To explain why Maidono became suddenly flustered, it's good to bring up a difference between Maidono and Hasako, that can be useful for the future reference.
Maidono was great in taking initiative and planning romantic occurrances, but became flustered when she was surprised by outside initiative. Conversely, Hasako was very shy when she needed to initiate something but displayed great adaptability and passion when she was put in the already initiated situation.
"W-We aren't really... Touma?"
Touma looked at the smoothie and then at Maidono.
"Maidono-san, I can do it alone if that's uncomfortable. But if living here all of those years taught me something, it's that you always take discounts or free samples"
'Ah, that level 0 mentality! A-Alright...'
"I-It's not like I don't want to..."
The twin straws, whitish-translucent in colour, entangled each other to form the shape of heart. And as two teens started to suck through them, the red coloured sundae circled the shape to her mouth, making it appear like an actual red heart.
Maidono wasn't the girl who was embarrassed easily, but couldn't help reddening a little.
"Hmm..." she heard Touma in the pause to catch breath" It's nice for them to give it for free, it tastes really good"
'What are you focusing on now, dummy? Don't you see a symbolic value here?'
Afterwards, they exited the restaurant. Maidono checked her pockets and paled
"Maidono-san? Is something the matter?"
"Carp... I forgot something important. Please wait here for me, I have to get it. I won't be gone for long"
"Oh... all right"
Maidono took off and arrived at her own apartment in next 10 minutes and snatched the item she forgot. By the next 5 she was back in a hurry, only to find no one except the crowd of passerby.
"E-Excuse me..." she tried to speak up" Did anyone see a guy with a spiky hair around here?"
The crowd muttered and an answer came
"Someone like that... was just hit by a truck and taken to hospital"
A box Maidono carried slipped from her grasp and hit the ground
(LATER, IN HEAVEN CANCELLER'S HOSPITAL)
The nurses looked in worry as the nervous and angry Maidono Hoshimi roamed the waiting room like an storm cloud.
"Why can't I enter?"
"The doctor said that he doesn't want to be disturbed"
Maidono gritted her teeth before turning to the driver of the truck that was supposedly a cause of the accident.
"If I can't enter for this long, it means he must be in really bad state... which is not good for you, you bastard"
The driver was a young, shaved man, wearing an oversized hoodie and slightly stained jeans, on top of sporting military-style identification tag on the one-ball chain. He raised his hands with startled expression.
"I swear, it was an accident. He just suddenly appeared in front of my truck..."
"Suddenly? He is not fucking suicidal. If you have nothing good to say, don't speak at all! It was your fault!"
Furious Maidono moved one hand close to herself in parallel to the other and the long chain worn by the man tightened itself around his neck, sinking into the skin as the great pressure was put around it.
"Ah... aggh..."
The man reached for his neck, struggling hard to breath, as he stumbled forward.
Maidono's face scrunched up before she screamed in frustration and lowered her hands, causing the choke hold to be released. As the driver gasped for air and fell to the ground, Maidono moved forward
"Damn it... I am coming in!"
"Maidono-san, please don't cause any more commotion"
But Maidono already breached the doors and went on towards the place she remembered Touma's personal room was.
(5 MINUTES LATER)
" Once again, do you have any idea how worried I was?"
Maidono was currently shaking Touma, who, even though partially bandaged, was not only conscious, but apparently in a very good shape.
"I am sorry. I just got caught up in talking with the Doc. We didn't have occasion to do that in a while"
Maidono was so relieved upon seeing Touma alright that she threw herself on him in a hug. However, once that relief passed, Touma found himself trapped by his own bed, as the parts of the bed railing near his arms and feet moved and wrapped around him, when Maidono vented through a very vocal rant.
"So, you say that you jumped back to avoid the falling flowerpot and stumbled straight onto the road and in front of that truck? Really?"
"This Kamijou is as ashamed of his misfortune and how stupid it must have looked, if that makes it any better"
The bed frame vibrated and bent slightly. Maidono groaned, holding a hand to her face.
"Seriously, you can find an opening and run across skyscraper while it is being thrown from the sky but then something like this happens... gods, I have to really apologize to that guy..."
"Yeah, you really have to"
"Anyway, you are in a really good mood for someone who almost died."
"Well, there is a big difference between almost dying and being dead"
"I don't know if I should be concerned or not about this logic of yours... anyway, I got a little carried away. I was just so sad and pissed that our day together ended up like that..."
"I told you before that you don't have get worked up over me. Remember our conversation in this hospital? You are your own boss. Don't be tied up to anyone"
Maidono groaned and the metal railings let Touma go as she sat on the bed.
"I am not doing this only because I want to serve you or work for you. I want to look after you not only because I need some validation for my own worth, but because you are the guy worth looking after. If you set me free, and I come back to you of my own free will, then this is my choice. It is my choice to stay close and have a good time with you. I don't desire this solely for each of us individually, but for us. I only realized it after some time, not when you said it to me, not when we met at the hospital, but during my time in prison, that you sharing the fact that you lost your memories with me was incredibly important to me. It liberated me and actually shifted my view of myself and my ability. And because I was thinking how to pronounce that connection in some way or form..."
She took a box that she went back to retrieve earlier, and opened it. Inside, there was a pair of decorative chopsticks.
"I still don't particularly fancy chopsticks. But they always come in sets of two, so I thought... when you look at it, you will think of me. And that's far more important."
She took one of the chopsticks, while giving Touma the other.
The boy smiled and said something warmly.
Maidono froze up and then whispered, using a voice slightly softer than before
"You used my name. My real name"
"Oh, I shouldn't have? I just thought... it slipped through..."
"No, I... I like it. When you call me like that in secrecy"
"In secrecy? You still don't want others to know it"
"Only you and Hasako know. That makes it special. Can... I have a request?"
"Yes?"
"Call me... that again"
Touma looked at her and slowly said two words once again.
She shivered as if tapped with lightning.
"Again..." she muttered, not minding that she was getting closer and closer by second.
But Touma never got the chance to fully said those two words again, as Maidono made sure that no distance remained for his lips to do so.
(BACK IN THE PRESENT)
As Maidono drifted into sleep reminiscing of her memory, Hasako was also experiencing her own memories of times past, a very special one for her.
(HASAKO'S STORY)
"Am I really not creating a problem for you? I can wash my hair on my own"
"Of course not. I want to help you in that. It's completely different if such a long hair is tended to by someone else"
"And we want to test those new chemicals..."
"Ekhm!"
"Oh, and this is also good opportunity to give you some nice perfumes"
"Thank you so much, both of you. I appreciate any help"
Kankyougami Hasako was laying down, with her facing upward in the water, as Gokusai Rikuri washed her long, dark-brown hair. On the edge of the onsen styled bathroom in the Kamijou + Gokusai apartment, Youen was mixing a bunch of liquids in the vials and grinding something into a powder.
After some time, Rikuri managed to get shampoo all over Hasako's head and then they got to rinsing it.
"Rikuri-san?"
"Hmm?"
"It's... so hard to believe that we are here now. I was once trying to kill you"
"You can say that again. But you weren't truly yourself back then, were you? We established multiple times that what was in the past stays in the past"
"I know, I understand that. It's just that sometimes, I can't believe that I you are so supportive of me. Not to mention that you fancy Touma-san too."
Rikuri submerged herself deeper into the water, only the top halves of her massive breasts and head remaining, as she ran her fingers across the submerged hair of Hasako, getting rid of remaining shampoo.
"Why do that, huh? I suppose it's because you are without a doubt a proof, a living sign, of the influence that boy's tendency to save people can have upon others. Looking at you makes me realize how much he did for us too, and that things seemingly impossible are not truly out of reach. Who would anticipated me being able to sleep with Kamijou, living with him and my sisters, working with the genius Carrier and Decomposer, and you, one of the reasons through which we united for the first time, finding way back to our lives, as our friend no less. Besides, holding a long-lasting grudges for no actual reason and out of pure pettiness is like mercury or lead poisoning. You seem fine at first, but it kills you slowly and if enough of it reaches your heart, you are done. It's the same with senseless revenge"
"You are really a good big sister, Rikuri-san"
"Please, don't mention it. I just help you because I can't help but feel Touma would like that"
After they exited the baths, Hasako was dried and put in front of the mirror.
"Please, dress up in this. You never wore a dress, right? Well, our family is informal expert on dresses, so I took the liberty in arranging this for you"
Hasako put on a blue dress that had a golden, vine-like patern alongside the side stitches. It was supported by a pair of blue straps going over the arms and pronouncing the neck, leaving the arms of the girl exposed, and reaching to the knee level. Hasako giggled as she moved around it.
"This material brushes against my thighs"
"At first it gives that sensation, you will get used to it"
Then came the hair styling. Ultimately, Hasako's hair was symetrically tied to form a bun on the top, just like with the traditional female styles from her time period. However, the hair on the back and under the bun was allowed to fall loosely in a cascade, drastically differing from the regular status quo Hasako knew.
"Thanks to the fact that your hair is so long, we can achieve such magnificent eclectic effect"
Finally, Youen stepped forward with a bit of make-up.
"It's a freshly new, all-natural eye shade. We won't use any white powder since your carnation is naturally pristine."
And finally, after the preparation, Kankyougami Hasako was beautified and ready to go.
(LATER, IN THE PARK IN DISTRICT 9)
"T-Touma-san! A-Are you okay?"
"I-I..."
Touma blinked, snapping himself out of absolutely stunned state he entered after seeing Hasako 20 seconds earlier.
"I am fine, I'm fine. It's just... you look absolutely gorgeous. As if Amaterasu herself came down to earth"
Hasako blushed and bowed gracefully.
"I am very happy to hear that"
"You didn't have to go this far."
"No, it was my choice. I want to look my absolute best for you. You look very nice and charming as well"
"I-I thought it was okay, but after seeing you..."
"I like it. Now, I thought you can show me some more of the city. There is still so much that we haven't explored. And then I would like us to go back here. I have something to show you... and I want to talk about some crucial matters as well"
(FEW HOURS LATER)
And so Touma accompanied Hasako gallantly through the journey of the city.
They travelled throughout the city in public transport, sitting next to each other.
Firstly, they went to see the airport. Even though Hasako was scared of flying, she was fascinated with watching planes, as they developed exponentially during her sleep.
Then, they journeyed to the restaurant in District 4. Hasako's curiosity caused her to try appetizers from at least 3 different cuisines from around the globe. Apparently, she didn't have many occasions to taste them in her 'previous life'
Then came amusement park in District 6, with Hasako practically melting with delight while eating cotton candy and hugging Touma while on the ferris wheel. In her excitement, she forgot about her fear of heights.
They also saw the ghostly District 19, although they didn't venture inside. Seeing it gave Hasako the opportunity to tell Touma of what she remembered from the city's layout in her time. Needless to say, it was much smaller and simpler, although even back then it possessed a significant technological advantage.
While passing to District 13, on the other side of the city, they met Fremea Seivelun and spoke with her about variety of random, daily topics. They went on to accompany her to Frenda's grave in Disctrict 10. After parting with a girl, Touma took Hasako to his home District 7 to tell stories about certain locations and adventures he had, since the first esper appeared to be very interested in that.
Ultimately, they visited, once again, the fated District 21, that brought them together. They didn't speak much there, reminiscing through the most of the time, before finally going back to return to District 9, just like Hasako envisioned.
Or at least, they wanted to, but the girl stopped, resting against the tree.
"Is everything alright?"
"Yes, it's just... I am not exactly the strongwoman. I apologize, but I might have miscalculated how much effort it will take to sightsee so many things"
"No problem, we can rest then."
"No! I mean... I have to get back to the part before sunset. But I will only slow you down..."
Touma thought for a moment, before hitting his open hand with a fist and taking a deep breath.
"I will carry you!"
"W-What... w-w-would you really..."
"I swear we will make it in time!"
"T-Then... I will be in your care..."
And so, Beginning Child ended up in the princess carry with Touma hurrying down the mountain to get to District 9, which fortunately was adjacent to District 21.
Even though her shyness caused her to become meek, she didn't dislike the experience. In fact, as she looked up at the boy's determined face, she felt more secure than ever in her life, which was reflected in her prism-like eyes, who didn't leave Touma for almost the entire journey.
(AT DISTRICT 9 PARK)
They managed to arrive in time. More so, they had some to spare. After giving a moment for Touma to rest, Hasako led him to the more secluded section of the park filled with art installations.
"Just a bit more... and there it is"
It was a field of flowers. A patch of the park was covered in blue flowers.
"What am I looking at?"
"It's my gardening work."
"You created this?"
"Because of my ability, I have a good hand for plant life. Accelerator-san allowed me to use this section of the park to train or cultivate my flowers, whatever should I choose. It was also here that I came with Kumokawa-san and where she taught me how to be... myself, again"
"You really love nature, don't you?"
"Yes. Plants, animals, oceans, land, and air, all of it. I always felt calm and serene while surrounded by nature. That's probably why being outside helped in my recovery. Now, please sit down on that bench, there is something very important I have to tell you..."
Touma nodded and followed her to the bench in front of the flower field.
"If I had anything in this life, it's probably time to think..." Hasako began, looking as the glow of slowly setting sun painted the sky orange" Maybe I am sentimental, but I am also older than I look. And this age made me realize just how many times I felt the dread and despair of loneliness. Loneliness from my very being, stemming simply from the fact that I existed. Ever since I woke up, I was gradually regaining and clarifying memories of who I once was. When I was a little girl, my father always forbid me from playing with others."
A small girl with tied up, dark-brown hair, wearing an elegant kimono despite her young age looked at the group of children playing with a ball outside, before she was forcibly pulled by the hand.
"F-Father! Why can't I-"
"We talked about this. The only way in this world to be truly satisfied is through competency, knowledge, and skill. Now, get back to your studies!"
"My father sacrificed a lot and had to fight to become influential figure in the educational world. He was convinced that he would make me happy by teaching me in a very intense fashion from the youngest age. It was a twisted way of thinking about my happiness. As for my mother, the beautiful noble lady of former samurai family of Kyoto, she educated me on how to be a lady and spent time talking about nothing. It wasn't time when people could really talk about their true emotions, especially not in Japan. And so I kept everything inside. I cried I wished to make them proud, but also to get out of this suffocating feeling of loneliness. And then, the opportunity arrived..."
"Academy City, new capital of education, seeks students of eager mind and keen intellect to become a foundation of the future for this post-war nation..."
"My father was very enthusiastic about Aleister's project. Soon, I was competing with many, many different students from across Japan. But thanks to my extreme upbringing, I came on top, superior. Because of my heritage and intellect I was selected as candidate for a first artificial esper. Soon, I was to leave my home and transfer here. And on the day of my departure, I was crying a bit, because I was excited but also quite scared. My mother patted me on the head, which she rarely did, and my father bestowed to me an advice..."
"You are exceptional. And with exceptional nature comes solitude. That's the curse of the genius mind. Learn to be lonely, my daughter. Learn to be only one for yourself. What you will achieve... who will truly understand? If being untrue to yourself means embracing others, than better be an outcast, than a strong mind in chains"
"Then I left and never saw them again. Aleister welcomed me and some other boys and girls to the lab. We were all experimented on and even though I was awkward, I made friends. We were all very excited for everything that awaited us. Except... that this was not to be. Those were the earliest days of drugs and methods of esper development. No, they almost didn't exist since esper powers and procedures for their evolution were de facto derived from my case. So, in the group of 10, there were side effects. Most vomited blood, some went insane, and all of them... except for me... died.
A girl in branched ponytail wearing a simple white robe embraced the other smaller girl with a wavy black curls. A trail of blood was flowing down her and trickling from her chin as her eyes chaotically moved from side to side.
"No..." the prism-like eyes of younger Hasako narrowed" It can't end like this... you told me so much about what ability would you like to get? We should get them together, right... that's the only way..."
The fallen girl wanted to say something, but only coughed more blood, staining Hasako's robe. But she paid it no mind.
"We...We are the only two left. Please... don't go! LIVE! Please, live!"
The girl's hand went up mechanically, as if trying to reach her friend's cheek... before falling down.
Hasako stared at her before tears welled in her eyes as she embraced the girl tighter.
"Aaaaaaaaah! Ngggggggggghhhhh!" she cried into now dead chest of her friend.
She did not know how long she was on the ground, but the steps behind her caused her to slowly, almost lifelessly raise her head.
"The drug infusion experiment was a success within a calculated margin of error" spoke Aleister Crowley"You resisted the conversion in your mind and body, thus your personal reality will be able to bring change into the world. From this time forth, you are the first of new kind of human. The Child of The Beginning, upon which this City will rise"
"Even before the accident with the volcano and Aleister's betrayal, I clashed and argued with him. I considered myself a pacifist, I always despised weapons and cruelty. But this city's scientists took my data and in time, the plans to use my descendants, the artificial espers, were made. Because of my success, they turned children into weapons. That was even more true when I awoke in this era. Seeing so many of my successors plunged in darkness, turning into murderers, using the abilities I was foundation for... it broke my heart"
Even after the city became populous and more people gained abilities, no one dared to bother her when she confronted Aleister Crowley.
She never got agitated or shouted. That focused coldness was the most terrifying.
The fury of the first esper.
Who despite her might had the gentlest of hearts.
She was rejected by people without power whose excitement soon turned into envy. She was rejected by those naturally born with power, who deemed her unnatural. And although she didn't know it, she was also shunned by those born without talent, as the creation of one that betrayed the ways of magic.
"It seemed like my father's words were coming true. Over and over again, no matter how much I struggled, I seemed to always be alone. Always a freak of nature, always someone else. So much so that there were times when I didn't want to truly go on. But... I was wrong"
Touma listened, with all the attention, as Hasako's voice broke slightly.
"All of those years I have been frozen in time... I gave up on thinking that someone actually cared for me. But some time after Kumokawa-san took me in, she discovered a package of letters in the Kyoto archives. My mother... changed after my disappearance. She felt guilty and sad about how our contact was in my childhood, and so she wrote a letter to me, believing for me to be dead, once a year, on my birthday. She did it more to herself, but she still put a lot of heart into those words... she wrote over 35 such letters before locking them in the safe place... before Kumokawa-san managed to get to them."
"Did you... manage to..."
"My mother... she... died 20 years before you woke me up. Apparently, she was nearly 90 years old. I... didn't get a chance to say goodbye"
"I am so sorry..."
Touma hugged Hasako. Even though she was crying there was a smile on her lips.
"In those letters, she told me of many things, even though she could never know that I will learn of them. So after all, I was able to get that message beyond the grave and reconcile with my mother and indirectly with my father"
The sun fully set and Hasako got up, looking at the field.
"The sun set and the moon rose. It's about time"
"About time for wha..."
But Touma soon learned on just what Hasako was waiting
One by one, the petals of the blue flowers began to glow. Soon, all of the flower field was giving of azure shine, as Hasako walked between them, her blue dress matching the blue glow of the flowers.
"How is that possible?"
"With my ability and this city's technology, I managed to create the bioluminescent plants. They aren't natural but I think they are beautiful. I named them Midnight Glories, since they bloom in the moonlight and close by sunrise. And scientifically, they are called after you: Amsonia Kamijiana."
"Wow... it's one of the coolest things I ever saw..." Touma admitted, joining Hasako in the walk through the field.
Meanwhile, in the bushes, nearby, Maidono Hoshimi poked her head out.
"Alright Hasacchi, you are in this spot just like you planned. Now, I am here to return the favour."
Hasako turned to Touma.
"Actually, there is something else I want to tell you. Possibly one of the most important things since I met you. You see, for all that loneliness, strife, grief, and rejection... I wanted to end it all. But once again, I am so glad I did. Why? All of those years I wished for someone who would understand me and wouldn't just pretend. I dreamed and dreamed, but I still walked alone. And then, after decades of being imprisoned in my own mind... there was you. You saved me because you saw me, the real me, even when I wasn't myself. You took my hand and shattered my loneliness. Not only in that battle, you are just like me. You too suffered through your ability, which made you different through your very nature, even though you had the best of intents. You also endured a lot in this city... I just wish I could have met you sooner. Because I could make you happy through this understanding... I am sure I could, just as I am sure that you would make me smile in that lonely childhood of mine too...
A boy covered in band-aids walked to the small girl crying in the corner. He shuffled his feet, before putting his hand on the girl's head. When she opened her multi-coloured eyes, she was surprised by the blue flower in her hair and the small grin on the battered boy's face...
Hasako shook her head with a smile.
"But it's alright. We both had our paths to walk through and it seems life still doesn't want to let go. And I never were more glad to be alive and never thanked fate more for this chain of events that led me to be displaced from the era I know into this strange, new world. Because thanks to this..."
The tears glimmered in her eyes again, as the strong wind made some of the glowing petals dance in the air around them.
"... I was given the gift of meeting you... and being able to love you" Hasako finished, her tone vibrant with emotions and carrying the note of adoration she never used before.
Touma was watching her stunned, his lips trying to speak but finding no words for now.
However, he didn't manage to, since a particularly strong wind knocked Hasako off her feet.
"Ah!"
In hiding, Maidono bit her lip.
"Shit!" she whispered" Did I overdo it?"
In the field of Midnight Glories, Kankyougami Hasako laid between the flowers, petals adorning her stylized hair. Above her was Kamijou Touma, who managed to cushion girl's fall with his arm.
Both of their hearts beat quickly. Suddenly, they couldn't see everything but each other's faces and eyes.
Well, and the moon visible over Touma's head.
"The moon is beautiful tonight" Hasako spoke quietly, her tone suddenly devoid of previous uncertainty.
"With my bad luck it might be strange to say it... but I think I can die happy"
They didn't know who moved first or whose eyes first close. The result was the same, as their lips locked, Hasako embracing back of Touma's neck and caressing his hair while allowing to be lifted to her feet. Because she was a bit shorter than him, she had to slightly tip-toe to maintain the kiss. A contact she surely didn't want to break, and which in fact was getting more passionate with time.
Maidono smiled, silently falling back, and leaving the pair kissing in the field of glowing flower. If she knew Hasako, this could take a while of privacy.
"No matter what, rivalry or not, she earned it... she waited long enough... good for you, Hasacchi, for finding your true love..."
(PRESENT, MORNING OF SECOND DAY AFTER TOUMA'S DEPARTURE)
Maidono opened her eyes and yawned, stretching herself.
"Good morning, Hoshimi." she was greeted by Hasako, who was already folding her futon.
"Where is Maria-san?"
"Up and awake for some time now, she said she wanted to make us breakfast"
"How kind of her" Maidono called a comb to her hand and started to brush her hair" Thank you for everything for the past two days. I feel fantastic, as if I could lift three skyscrapers at once!"
"Kchi!"
Maidono narrowed her eyes at the sound of tiny sneeze behind her and turned to Hasako covering her nose with a handkerchief.
"Hasacchi..."
"W-What is it?"
"You promised you won't get sick through taking care of me. So don't you dare pull something now"
"O-Of course I won't. D-Don't make a fuss over a little sneeze"
There was a doorbell, but Maidono ignored her and put a hand on her friend's forehead.
"You are the type who will overwork herself for people she cares about. It's amazing to have a friend like you, but I am not having you going on without rest"
"Hoshimi, I just woke up."
"After sleeping 4 hours"
"I just wasn't sleepy"
"Today, I am taking care of you! No discussion"
"I am not even sick. I am a lot older than you"
"Then why are you-"
"HUUUUUH?! What are you doing here?!"
It was Maria's scream.
Both girls looked at each other and ran towards the front door.
How surprised they were to find Maria in battle stance against...
A small girl. Yes, the newcomer was a small girl with black hair buns, pink sweater, miniskirt, and torn black stockings.
Hasako smiled and spoke
"Maria-san, what are you doing? It's just a little girl-"
"Don't be fooled!" Maria remained in ginga stance, her eyes not leaving the girl" I met her before. She is very dangerous, so don't provoke her"
The phones and screens hanging from girl's neck swayed as she looked around.
"Touma onii-chan is not here. Does that mean employing the strategy to arrive here undetected was a waste of effort? Wastefulness as such is very un-Kihara-like"
"Her name is Kihara Enshuu and despite how she looks, she is one of the more dangerous members of Kihara family"
"Kihara..." both Maidono and Hasako muttered, with two different tones, but each conveying similar worry.
"What are you doing here?" asked Maria" We won't let you bother Kamijou"
"I do not seek physical confrontation under current conditions, though it can change through your actions. I seek Kamijou Touma. Since he is not here, I shall employ a wait strategy while working on other tasks in this place. Just like Byouri obaa-chan would do"
"Why is she talking like this?"
"She uses thought patterns of other people to formulate a course of action. Really tricky and unpredictable stuff. Now, you didn't answer my question"
"Answering your question lacks practical reason, but, to avoid unnecessary commotion with you, I shall provide it, like Noukan oji-chan. I was contacted to one similar yet different to Kamijou Touma, and offered a chance in partnership. His parameters didn't match Touma onii-chan's that I use in my selection. This confusion led me to investigation. Following the pattern of Amata onii-san, I decided to trace the source of the confusion and do the Kihara's duty of understanding the sudden duality of one supposedly known as 'Kamijou Touma'"
Hasako and Maidono exchanged glances.
Kamijou no Touma, without a doubt, contacted this member of Kihara family.
"That man, resembling yet not being Touma onii-chan, offered me observation of qualities that can bring and perfect my Kihara-ness to highest degree. I remain invested and attached to original thought patterns of Touma onii-chan. But it's Kihara-like to weigh the empirical evidence from observation and debate after the examination of both cases, in words of Therestina obaa-san. Thus, the reason for my presence in his place of living remains simple..."
Enshuu looked at the other girls with a silent challenge.
"I shall remain here until his homecoming. Then, I shall compare his qualities to the one displayed as the version of himself that came into contact with me. Using this comparative data, I will ally myself with this Touma onii-chan that meets criteria I set up in my head. Welcome, I am Kihara Enshuu. You can become my enemies in the future. In the present, let our time be efficient and fruitful in effort."
(TO BE CONTINUED...)
Well, there you have it. Another suspenseful pause for sure.
We have a lot to think about this chapter. It was a partially flashback chapter, but we got both dates and Hasako's love confession. Another part I really liked to write was 'World's riches' (Kongou's speech about loving Touma), the concept of Accelerator having a secret, obsessive harem in Nagatenjouki and the absolute best repetitive gag of Touma and Mitori accidentally eating each other (or at least, each other's tongues) during another accidental kiss.
I am just so happy that I focused on Maidono and Hasako, lots of people were saying they want their love confessions or dates, so I was more than happy to provide that. I also thought about incorporating all three Gokusai sisters into it and it's great that I managed that as well.
Also, Tokiwadai trio is very wholesome and underrated. I probably repeat myself, but if I were to date Toaru girls, aside from Hasako and Maidono, Kongou and Nephthys would be clearly on top, I don't have doubt, with Itsuwa as strong back up.
I think the topic of similarities between both Hasako and Maidono to Touma, combined with differences between all of them, can be explored on and on and on. I can't believe their characters are not used in the story more, there are both so cute, filled with potential, and can contribute so much.
Also, Seria and Maria. We will get a Seria involvement because her challenging KNT would be damn amazing (and while do I always think of some strange, intellectual intimate tension in that confrontation?) as well as exploring her love for Touma, but we also have love for Maria. I am starting to feel good with her ground for loving Touma in this story, that will also be touched upon, as well as her NTR maid story fetish for comic relief. Overall, they are such good sisters to write.
Also, best Kihara imouto returns, now first time with physical appearance. Far enough, Birdway felt disturbance in the force. Will Enshuu ally with KNT or will she reconsider and see desired qualities in her original onii-chan? Only time will tell...
A question to you, dear readers. I was told that one of the most liked parts of my writing, besides development and interactions, are the characters' speeches. There are quite a few of them in this story. I would love to find out which one you liked the most (if any). For example:
Kaibi's love confession speech
Rikuri's love confession speech
Touma's speech to Mugino and Kakine against Dark Side
Fukiyose's 'I care' speech
Touma's confrontational speech to Lessar
Bayoupe's/New Light backstory
Nephthys Speeches (About Magic Godhood, Against Othinus, and about her relationship with Touma)
Othinus' speech to Index about growth and maturity when it comes to Touma
Bologna's alternative backstory
Aleister's explanation of linking level 5s to Heavenly Virtues
Maidono's story and love confession
Hasako's story and love confession
Touma's speech to Ayu
Hasako's speech to Ayu
Kaibi's speech to Ayu
Ladylee's speech about immortality
Ayu's speech about her experiences to Misaki and Touma
The World's Riches (Kongou's speech about her feelings for Touma)
Kaibi's speech about Brain in The Vat
Ayu's speech to IDEAL girls
Touma's message to his older self and Shiina's story about Touma
Orsola's speech/Mugino's lament
Those are the ones that first come to my mind. Which one did you like most? Or maybe it was something else?
