Introducing the Girlfriends
"Hey, Nat?" Piper half smiled, half grimaced as she peered around the door.
"Hey sis." Nat murmured, clearly disinterested in a more prolonged conversation as she kept her nose in the comic book she was reading. The younger Wright sister was reclined quite happily in comfort on their settee within their Publick Occurences office/home.
Piper resisted the urge to roll her eyes and turned to glance back behind the door. She jerked her head forward and moved inside.
Nat only deigned to look up when her older sister came to stand before her, though it might also have been something to do with the fact that Piper was suddenly flanked by two other women as well. The younger Wright sister raised a quizzical eyebrow.
"So, err, you know how I head out of town sometimes." Piper began with a somewhat awkward smile. "You know I don't go out there alone, right?"
"Uh huh?" Nat drawled slowly with a nod.
"Well, you know Nora, don't you?" Piper indicated the blonde woman to her left.
"Hi Nat!" Nora smiled brightly.
"And Cait?" Piper indicated the redhead on her right.
"S'up." Cait nodded at Nat with a barely interested expression.
"Sure? And, hey?" Nat gave both women a half-hearted wave and a somewhat awkward, half-smile each.
Piper took a breath. "Well, you see- The thing is, Nora and Cait here, they're the people I go out of town with. They help keep me safe, you see. I watch their backs and they watch mine, but that- that's not important right now."
"You're killing it, Pipes." Cait snickered in a stage whisper to Piper.
Nora reached behind Piper to smack the redhead on the arm. "Shush you!" She frowned.
Piper tried to ignore them both. "You see, Nat, they … they're both- Well, they are both really, really important to me. In fact they are actually my- my girlfriends." She finally said the words with what could only be described as a grimace making a feeble attempt at being a smile. "We're … seeing each other, romantically I mean, all three of us, together."
Nat regarded her sister for a long moment. She looked to Nora. She looked to Cait. She looked back to Piper. She looked back down to her comic book.
"Ok." The younger Wright sister murmured with a hardly-there shrug of her shoulder.
"Wa- Wait, what do you mean 'ok'?" Piper scowled. "Is that it?"
Nat blinked slowly. "Oh, sorry." She looked back up at Nora and Cait with a small smile. "Congrats."
"Aww, thank you Nat!" Nora chuckled, moving over to give the girl a hug.
"But- That's not what I- I thought you might …" Piper gave up with a sigh. She had really been expecting more of a reaction than that. She hadn't been all too sure what to expect but she'd been expecting something at the very least.
"See? I told you it would be easy." Cait chuckled Piper's way, giving her a pat on the shoulder.
Piper threw Cait a quick scowl before turning back to her sister. "But- Don't you have any questions or- or anything?"
"Err … no?" Nat shrugged.
"Oh." Piper sighed, deflated.
"No, wait. Does this mean I get extra presents for my birthday now?" Nat's eyes suddenly lit up at the possibilities.
"Nat!" Piper moaned.
Cait huffed. "Don't count on it, squirt."
"I'll tell you a load of embarrassing stories about my sister?" Nat offered.
"Deal." Cait shot her hand out immediately.
"Hey! No!" Piper squawked, trying in vain to get between them as they shook hands. "No! Not cool, Nat!"
