The buzz of the Vortex Manipulator was louder than what she expected, then again she was aiming for a library or at least somewhere cleaner than a sewer. Even though there was enough silence to hear her device winding down, there was a chill making the air feel uneasy. There was muffling sounds coming from the above her. Screaming and slow rumble as if trees where falling.
"Well, this sure isn't the Library of Alexandria. Seems…charming."
"How did you appear here?" a booming voice echoed in the wet tunnel. "The other travelers appeared around the planar bridge, why did you end up here?" She could not place where this voice was coming from. Whoever wanted to talk with her did not want to scare her. Could have come out in a rage with how large this voice was. And if the voice didn't want to interact with her at all, it would have just run away.
"Didn't know there were other guests coming, sweetie. Just came by myself today," slowly she walked towards what she could guess was up stream while putting a hand on the strap holding the sonic screwdriver. "My name is River Song. I'm a time traveler by hobby and I got pinged on an anomaly in this place. I could always use someone strong to help find my way."
The snort coming from each direction shook her and darting a glance in each direction. "Your name has to come from the Selesnya, but that toy you are holding feels Izzet made. If you do want to help, who is it you are helping?"
River Song notices a splash of water coming from a ways down. Barely enough light to make out a shape. Wider than an angel and taller than those tin can Darlexs. Surprisingly the voice was matching the size of the…person? "You are the first and only person I have met, so I guess I'm helping you. Now I've been nice and answering questions, how about we become friends and you tell me yours."
A chuckle the size of a clap came from this entity as they stepped into the light. The beast placed one foot out and another while being assisted by a pike. With a toss of his large chain of keys he announced, "Grenzo is the name, Ms Song. And you seem to be a long way from home."
She has seen goblins before, both in the books she read and in her travels. What was not surprising was the size or his green skin. Nor was it the fact that his clothes seemed official and belonging to some sort of court system to whatever place she found herself in. What was surprising was the tufts of white hair highlighting his chin and head. For someone in the sewer, he kept himself clean and presentable.
"Not lost, Sweetie, just taking a scenic route," she glanced around after hearing a loud crash happening on what she can assume to be the surface. "So Grenzo, do you know a way to give ourselves some distance from what is going on?"
With a crooked smile, he lifted up his keychain. "I have a key to each door in this city. And no one knows the tunnels better than me. But if you need a guide, it will cost you."
"I'm sure we can come to some kind of agreement. I would appreciate an expert." River Song stepped behind the burly goblin named Grenzo and followed in his footsteps.
She could not tell where the smell of the tunnel started but it wasn't just decay. There was some kind of purpose behind how things settled here. Ammonia is a typical scent in other pipes River has experienced; this wasn't a pleasant smell but could be slightly more than neutral. What little water was below her feet was slimy but consistent. Habit told her to keep her mouth closed so no insects or parasites could enter her body, but the large hunchbacked goblin was the only living thing reacting to her. She looked up at the backlit Grenzo, holding himself with the confidence only an elder criminal knows.
"Where am I?" River broke the silence, "What do people call this place?"
"Ravnica," Grenzo doesn't turn around. "Specifically you are under the Transguild Promenade, so luckily you don't have to deal with lots of blood or natural waste." Touching a ladder to read it, Grenzo shakes his head and continues.
"Where are we heading?"
"Tin Street. Ironically it is the safest place to get out right now."
"Why is that?"
"There have been lots of visitors coming. People like you, but more…" Grenzo holds the lantern back towards River and examines her face and scans her up and down, "…magical."
"Well, if you truly know who I was I think you might see me as…" River looked up to Grenzo and saw his gaze was not on her, but behind her. She then felt a short breeze on the top of her head. Slowly pulling out her sonic screwdriver and ran through all the different options of what to do. She hasn't used it very often, but she saw the Doctor use it in sticky situations before.
Quickly turning around, she thrusted in the direction where she felt the breath of the creature. She closed her eyes and felt a warm, wet goo coming from her hand. She didn't think about what the sonic screwdriver would use, but with her eyes closed she did know what was going on. Slowly looking up, she could feel the weight of the large insect creature. Smooth purple shell of a beetle was attempting to protect the humanoid, but what it didn't account for is a small time traveler jamming a metallic screwdriver up into its throat in one of the few weak points it had.
This will be an interesting conversation with the Doctor.
