Positive

She sat on the edge of the bathtub, tapping her foot anxiously as she watched the seconds tick by on the timer on her phone.

5-4-3-2-1

Beep! Beep! Beep!

She sighed and stood up. She picked up the test with shaking fingers.

Positive.

Aili put the cap back on the test. She leaned against the sink and closed her eyes.

How would Amadeus react?

Maybe it was a false positive?

She should see a doctor.

Aili grabbed the test and went to the bedroom she shared with Amadeus. She hid the test in her dresser drawer and pushed it shut.

She needed to be sure.

Three hours later Aili slid into an empty booth at Granny's. After a lecture from Dr. Whale that a pregnancy was not an emergency, he agreed to do a test.

It had also been positive.

He then sent her to radiology where they did a sonogram.

It had been surreal seeing that tiny spec on the screen.

A baby.

Her baby.

"What can I get for you?"

Aili jumped. She hadn't noticed Ruby come over to take her order.

"You okay?" The brunette asked, frowning.

"Yes, sorry. I just have a lot on my mind." Aili forced a smile, "Can I please have a lemonade."

Ruby nodded, "Ill bring it right over."

"Thank you."

Ruby nodded and headed back towards the counter. Aili sighed and folded her hands on the table.

She had her answer. She was definitely going to be a mom.

Now she just had to think of a way to tell Amadeus…

Aili flipped the page in her book. Amadeus would be home any minute. She bit back the waves of nausea that washed over her as she thought about breaking the news to Amadeus.

She heard the front door open and close.

She sat her book on the nightstand and got up from her spot on the bed.

"Aili, are you home?" Amadeus called.

"Coming." She called back.

"Stay, I can come up there." She could hear his footfalls on the stairwell. She crossed the room and opened the bedroom door just as he reached the top of the stairs. "I told you to stay - you should be resting." He frowned, looking concerned. He walked over and wrapped his arms around her waist.

"It's okay. I'm feeling better this afternoon." she returned the embrace.

"Well that's wonderful news." He said, sounding relieved.

"As a matter of fact, I was hoping you might want to go for a little walk. I was thinking the fresh air might do me good."

"If you think you feel up to it." He frowned again. "I don't want you to overdo if you're unwell."

"I feel up to it.. besides, I think Major will enjoy it." She glanced over at his Bernese Mountain Dog who was stretched out across the bed, watching them. "He was keeping me company."

Amadeus nodded, "Okay. Just let me change." He gave her a quick peck on the cheek before walking over to the walk in closet. She sat back down on the bed, feeling anxious.

What if he gets angry?

What if he decides he doesn't want to get married ?

She looked down at her shaking hands, where the diamond ring he had given her rested on her left index finger.

Was she going to lose the love of her life?

"Where do you want to go?"

Aili jumped and tucked her shaking hands under her thighs.

"Are you okay?" Amadeus asked as he took off his watch and sat it on the dresser. He had already changed into a pair of jeans and a T-shirt.

"yea, sorry I was just thinking" Aili forced a smile. "I was thinking we could walk the trail to the lookout and see the view of the beach. You know how much I love it there."

That was where Amadeus had proposed to her.

He slid on the flannel shirt was carrying and wrapped his arms around her waist. He gave her a kiss and smiled, "That sounds nice to me. I just need to put on my boots."

Aili smiled as she followed Amadeus out of the room.

Hopefully this wasn't the last romantic walk they had as a couple...

Aili clutched Amadeus's hand as they walked up the dirt path to the look out. Her mind was racing. What would she do if he ended things?

"Aili, you have been awfully quiet….are you sure you are okay?"

"Yes - I'm just enjoying the view." She squeezed his hand as they made their way to the top of the path. She could see the endless blue of the sea overtop the trees.

"I think this is our special spot." He smiled at her and pulled her closer to him. He released her hand and wrapped his arm around her waist instead, holding her against his side. Major trotted along beside them, sniffing the trees and brush.

She inhaled deeply, enjoying the mixture of the scent of his cologne and the cool evening air. "I think so too. At least, it's special to me."

"Me too, musa, me too."

They walked in comfortable silence until they reached the lookout, "it looks like someone is already here…" Amadeus sounded disappointed.

Aili slid out of his grip and clutched his hand, pulling him toward the group of people at the lookout..

Amadeus chuckled as he realized who was waiting for them at the lookout.

Major barked and ran up to Allie, Amadeus's youngest foster child. She crouched down and rubbed his ears.

Oliver, the oldest, stood beside Ruby. He was holding a wicker picnic basket.

"What's all this?" Amadeus looked at the blanket spread out in the ground near the edge of the look out, surrounded by candles.

"A surprise." Allie said, smiling brightly. "Aili said we could help so Ruby brought us here to set it up. Do you like it?" She asked eagerly.

He crouched down beside Allie and smiled, "Absolutely, you did a fantastic job."

The little girl beamed proudly.

"Why don't we go to the diner and get chocolate milkshakes?" Ruby suggested.

"Can I have strawberry instead?" Oliver asked, setting the basket down on the blanket.

"Of course." Ruby wrapped an arm around Allie's shoulders and smiled at Aili and Amadeus. "You two enjoy your picnic."

Thank you, Aili mouthed as Ruby guided the kids down the hill.

Aili watched as they walked away then turned to Amadeus. He was watching her with a smile on his face.

"This is a pleasant surprise." he motioned for her to sit down.

"I'm glad you're enjoying our evening." She took a seat on the blanket, his feet stretched out in front of her. He sat down beside her. "The sky certainly is beautiful."

Amadeus hummed in acknowledgement, looking out at the sunset.

"I think we should enjoy our picnic before it gets dark." Aili reached for the basket and pulled it onto her lap. Major curled up by their feet on the edge of the blanket.

She opened the basket and pulled out two brown paper bags. "I let Ruby and the kids do the cooking. So I'm not sure what we are going to have this evening." She handed Amadeus one of the bags. She slowly opened her bag and giggled at the contents inside. "Maybe I Made a mistake." She joked..

Amadeus laughed and pulled the grilled cheese sandwich and container of fries out of his bag. "I feel like Allie had a hand in this." He unwrapped the sandwich and took a bite.

Aili grabbed one of the French fries and took a bite. She was too nervous to be hungry but if Amadeus thought she was feeling under the weather he would insist they go home so she could rest…and she wanted to give him the news here.

She took a minute to check the basket. She pulled out a jug of iced tea and two glasses. Inside was also a container with two slices of Granny's apple pie. Tucked beside the pie was the item she was looking for.

She poured him a glass of iced tea and handed it to him before pouring a glass for herself. Aili picked at her food and listened to Amadeus talk about his day.

"Are you alright, love? You haven't eaten much."

Aili nodded, "I'm fine. Just being careful with my stomach after not feeling well earlier." She took a bite of her grilled cheese for emphasis.

He nodded, clearly satisfied with her response and finished off his glass of iced tea.

"There is also pie in here. I'm guessing Granny snuck it in there for you." Aili pulled out the container and handed it to him with a fork.

He took the pie and the fork and sat it in his lap. "So, Aili, tell me what's bothering you."

Aili choked on her sweet tea. Amadeus's eyebrows shot up as he watched her grab a napkin and wipe her mouth.

"What makes you think something is bothering me?" Aili asked, cheeks flushed - half from his ability to read her and half from her unbecoming reaction.

"Most people do not want to go on hikes and have picnics after being sick all morning-"

"You know I'm not like most girls…"

He nodded his head in acknowledgement, "And you've been really quiet, you have barely eaten, you seemed anxious when I came home, and you had Ruby take the kids…" He gave her a concerned look, "Is something wrong?"

Aili sighed and sat her food aside, "You're equally intelligent, empathetic and handsome."

"Well, if you are complimenting me like that I might still be able to call you my fiance after this, right?"

He thought she was going to break up with him?

"You were afraid I wanted to end things?"

He nodded, "You've seemed really …off since I came home."

Aili sighed. She had been rather dodgy. Here she had been worried he would leave her and he was worrying about the same thing.

"The only way that happens is if you decide you want to end things."

Amadeus looked relieved, "Well, that isn't going to happen, Musa."

We will see about that. "I'm sorry I made you worry. I love you." she held out her hand.

He took it and squeezed it gently. "I love you too, but why are you so nervous if you aren't giving me bad news?"

"I have a surprise for you. I'm worried whether you will like it or not."

He chuckled, "You have no reason to be nervous. I will love any surprise from you."

"I hope so." She drug her lip between her teeth, "Do you want it now?"

"Yes, please." He squeezed her hand gently before letting go

She reached into the basket and pulled out a black case. She held it out to him.

"A piccolo?" He smiled excitedly as he took the case. He moved the untouched pie off his lap and sat it aside. He sat the case on his lap.

"Open it." She sat up straight, pulling her legs in and crossing them in front of her. She angled her body to face him while he opened the case. She could hear her heartbeat as she watched him unhook the hinges on the front of the case.

She watched as he opened the case, his eyebrows knit together and his lips slightly parted. He picked up the small picture and looked at it.

"What is -" he stopped as he caught sight of the other items inside the case. He picked up the little pair of white socks and the little white hat. He turned to her mouth agape. "Are you trying to tell me you're -"

Aili nodded, her hands clasped together in her lap to hide her trembling.

A sense of relief washed over her as his stunned expression slowly shifted into a smile. He scrambled to remove the items from his laugh, knocking over the bottle of ice tea and spilling it everywhere. Major snorted and ran off to avoid getting wet.

"Shit." He grabbed the jug and picked it up.

Aili laughed, tears of joy and relief pricking the corners of her eyes.

He laughed too. He reached for her waist and pulled her over to him, wrapping her in a tight embrace. He kissed her then caught sight of the tears. "Don't cry, love. Are you not happy?" he frowned.

Aili smiled and nodded, "I'm happy. I'm just relieved. I didn't know how you would react. We hadn't really discussed having children…"

"I'm elated. I can't believe it." He kissed her temple and rubbed her back as he held her against his side.

"We already know you are going to be an amazing dad."

"And you will be an amazing mom. You are wonderful with Allie and Oliver."

"Thank you." Aili smiled gratefully.

He smiled and gently cupped her face, pulling her into a kiss.

Major barked and climbed on top of them, forcing them apart. They both laughed and Aili scratched the dog's ears.

"I think someone was jealous. "Amadeus said as he scratched the dog's chest.

"I think so too." Aili smiled. She gave Major a quick peck on the snout which seemed to satisfy the dog and he moved, curling up beside Amadeus in the grass. She looked out at the view. "It's getting late. We really should head back and get the kids."

Amadeus nodded, "But first - let me play the baby a song."
