Izuku Midoriya was four when he was told the good news that he would receive a Quirk. But when it finally manifested, it was unlike anything anyone had ever seen. A translucent computer screen and keyboards would appear before him, something that only he could see. He couldn't understand it at the time. He was much too young to figure out something so advanced. And because only he could see it, he was labeled a dud. A failure. And in many ways, that was worse than being Quirkless.
He became isolated from his peers and ended up without friends. His mother tried to comfort him, tried to be there when he needed her, but she was just one person. Not to mention she had her hands full with her job. But it was fine, Izuku still had his quirk. And while he was disheartened by the obstacles life had thrown him, he had not fallen to despair. All he had to do was figure out his Quirk. And then he could finally pursue his dream of being a hero.
So much like someone exercising a body part, Izuku dedicated hours upon hours to trying to understand his ability. And over the years, the interface became easier and easier to decipher. And when it finally clicked, it was like a whole new world had opened itself up to him. There were several tabs on the monitor. And multitudes of options underneath said tabs.
For example, there was a 'World' tab and when he clicked it, he was floored with the number of worlds available. And as he browsed through it, he began to realize he was peering into the multiverse. There was a world called 'My Hero' and it seemed to be his. But it also had its own various timelines. One where he was All Might's successor, another where he had this wild fusion power, and another where he became Spider-Man!
He breathlessly scrolled through the timelines and when he clicked them, his eyes widened when he was given a list of the inhabitants. And options on what he wanted to do with them. He could summon them, summon a copy of them and even manipulate anything he desired about that copy. He swallowed. This kind of power, had it been given to be a Supervillain, it would be absolutely horrifying. It was as if he had the powers of a God.
He browsed further and found other worlds. One with a man who could defeat anything in One Punch. Another with a Slime who became a Demon Lord. Each one also had different timelines within it.
Needless to say, for a ten year old who was a fan of heroes and fantasy novels, this was causing him to overload. His quirk was dangerous. But it was also awesome. So very awesome.
It was as if he was tapping into the Operating System of the Multiverse and exploiting a glitch.
Wouldn't that make him some sort of Glitcher?
His eyes widened and he smiled. He knew what he was going to register his Quirk under now.
Still. He wanted to test his power out. But what should he do? He could summon or copy anyone. He could bring the greatest hero here. He could interview the most feared supervillain.
He could . . . ask for a friend.
Izuku Midoriya was lonely. That much was true. He wasn't even friends with Katsuki anymore. The boy didn't bully him, but he pretty much ignored his existence. So Izuku basically had no one.
A friend would be great.
He inhaled and steeled his nerves. He would definitely use the copy function. Summoning the real person here didn't sit well with him. It was basically kidnapping.
But the question remained. Who would be good? He could edit the person in question, but that didn't sit well with him either. Well, almost. He'd be willing to make a few tweaks here and there. But he didn't want to alter someone's entire personality just to suit his needs. That was something a villain would do.
He gazed at one person in particular. He wanted a friend who was brave. A friend who was kind. A friend who wouldn't judge others for their shortcomings.
A friend who was heroic.
And this person embodied all those traits. All he had to do was rewrite their past. He didn't want to traumatize them by making them think they were in a different world. So he'd just need to do some spot editing. And of course, give them knowledge of him.
He basically knew everything about them, so it was only fair.
Oh and he also made sure to let them access their powers without that stupid caveat. Honestly, he felt for the original. Their world sounded awful.
Either way, his changes done, he hit copy and then pressed the summon button.
He had aged them down slightly, so they would be in his grade, but fortunately their original age wasn't far off anyways.
A flash of light enveloped the room and he staggered backward a bit. That was a bit more intense than he thought it'd be. But then again, he was practically creating life and if there was a god, he was definitely being sent to hell for this.
The light began to die down and he had to stifle a gasp. She was way prettier in real life. She had pink hair done into pigtails and matching pink eyes. A smile danced upon her face, Aldera's Elementary uniform adorned her figure.
"Hey, Izuku!" Madoka Kaname chimed with a smile. "Whatcha wanna do today?"
Staring down Madoka's beaming smile and big innocent eyes, Izuku cracked immediately and confessed everything about his Quirk and how he'd created her. He'd even made up a past of her being an orphan so no one would question her lack of parents.
He'd thought he could keep up the lie. But he couldn't do it. But before he could berate himself more, he felt Madoka cup both sides of his face.
"Izuku. It's okay. Even if I am a creation or a copy . . . the fact is, you still made me my own person. And while some might be angry at you, with the knowledge you gave me about yourself, I know that you're not a bad person. Besides, from what you've told me of my original? I think I have it good."
Izuku stared up at her and his eyes started to water. "You're too pure" he mumbled.
Madoka giggled. "Though I do recommend giving future copies an information packet about them being a copy. Should ease your guilt. Like, if you had summoned Homura-"
"-I'd be dead."
Madoka nodded. "Definitely."
Izuku had told Madoka everything, including the whole deal with Homura. And they had both agreed that the girl was scary.
"Anyways!" Madoka said as she placed her hands on her hips. "Now that you know how to use your Quirk, we need to get you into shape so you can be a hero. I need to train myself, but not nearly as much as you."
Izuku drooped a little. He really had been slacking off on the whole physical aspect of training. "I guess I should. There are plenty of heroes whose Quirk aren't exactly combat-oriented."
"Exactly. I have memories of you rambling at me for hours about them."
Izuku flopped over. "I wanted a friend and I've created a reminder of my shortcomings."
"Pssh. That's what friends are for! Now then, let's get to work. I also want to explore my own Quirk and how it works."
Madoka had surprisingly been accepted easily by the Matriarch of the Midoriya Household, especially after Izuku had explained to her that it was his Quirk that had created her.
Though he had to bury his face in embarrassment when his mother made him swear not to use his Quirk for naughty things, much to Madoka's endless amusement. He'd forgotten that outside of her life or death struggles, the Original Madoka was actually quite the goofball. But in a way, it was nice. This was a Madoka who was getting to lead a peaceful life. One where she wasn't fated to die or become some sort of Goddess.
Speaking of, he had actually added her Goddess form to her Quirk. It was sort of like a Super Mode. He had told her as much, but they both agreed that she shouldn't use it unless the situation was dire.
But right now, he was in a bit of a pickle. And that was the fact that he had truly created a monster. Because sure, he had a friend he could play games with now. But Madoka was absolutely cracked at video games! No matter what game they played, she would completely slaughter him. He stood no chance. It was like watching All Might face a normal robber. It was pathetic, it was frustrating, it was probably the most fun he'd ever had in his life.
Madoka was like the sister he'd never had and while he had manufactured their past together, their present and future was all genuine. She could have rejected him and gone on to live her own life and he wouldn't have stopped her. But she stuck around and they were both aiming to become heroes.
But the universe had a way of punishing good people. Even if they had done nothing wrong. And it would be the first time Izuku would witness his friend get angry.
It had been four years since he had summoned Madoka and since then, he hadn't bothered summoning anyone else as he hadn't seen a need to. He and Madoka had trained long and hard to become heroes. And the results had shown. He was far more fit than he had ever been before and he had a confidence that seemed foreign to him. Madoka herself had grown distinct from the original. She was still the kind hearted soul she had been originally, but she now held a fire that was purely her own. He'd even go as far to call her a bit hot-blooded.
But perhaps taking a shortcut after school that day was a stupid idea. Because if he had taken a different turn or been a bit more patient, he wouldn't be suffocating within some kind of Sludge Villain. Even with his new physical strength, he wasn't strong enough to break free and desperately clawed at the bastard. And that's when his world was illuminated by pink. He could hear the villain shriek in pain as he was basically evaporated and he found himself caught by soft, but firm arms.
"Madoka . . ." he croaked.
"I killed him" he heard her mutter, her tone almost broken. "I didn't mean to. I was just . . . so angry."
He heard her sniffle. "That's not how a hero should act," she said, her voice breaking as she began to cry.
Izuku didn't know what to say. He simply hugged her.
And for what seemed like an eternity, there was nothing but the sounds of Madoka's sobs before a new voice made itself known.
"Young lady" a voice came from somewhere nearby.
Izuku broke free of Madoka and turned around to behold a nearly skeletal man standing there. His blue eyes gazed at them.
"I saw what you did and overheard what you said."
Izuku felt Madoka stiffen and he instinctively made sure he was positioned entirely in front of her.
"But the fact that you feel so horrible means that you are not a bad person. Sometimes, a hero must kill in order to protect. It is an absolute last resort and something that many frown upon. But if there are no other ways to proceed forward and someone's life is at stake, then you must make the call then and there."
Izuku was in awe. He'd never heard someone talk about heroes like this. To him, they had always been paragons. Incapable of doing bad. But this man had just shattered those preconceptions as simply as one throwing a rock through a glass window.
"But I-" Madoka spoke up. "I could have-"
The man held up his hand. "You are still young and you were terrified for your friend's safety. No one will hold what you did against you. Still. It would be remiss of me to just let you two go. What kind of Pro Hero would I be if I let you suffer in silence?"
It was at times like this that Izuku did not regret avoiding spoilers in regards to his own world. Because before his very eyes, the scrawny man buffed up into the hulking form of none other than All Might himself.
"I ask you to keep this a secret! Not many know about my true form. But after witnessing what happened, I felt that I could trust you. There's a fire that burns in the eyes of you both. Something that marks you as true heroes!"
Izuku's brain refused to work for a moment. "A-All Might?! Oh my gosh! It's you! It's really you! Uh, right! Introductions! I'm Izumir Fabuka. I mean, Izuku Midoriya. And that's Madoka Kaname."
"Hahaha! Relax, Young Midoriya. I'm not going anywhere quite yet. But I meant what I said. Between Madoka's desire to save you, and the fact that mere seconds after a life or death struggle, you put your all into comforting her. It marks you both as truly selfless people. And if I could split my Quirk into two, I most definitely would."
"Your Quirk?" Madoka asked, finally finding her voice again. "What do you mean by that?"
"An excellent question, Young Kaname! My Quirk was not originally my own. It was passed unto me like a sacred torch!"
And that's when Izuku's brain clicked into place. That's right! There was that world where he was All Might's successor!
"Each person cultivates it and it grows stronger and stronger. That is my quirk. One for All!"
"But why would you need to pass it on?" Madoka asked. "You're still young."
All Might's smile strained and in a poof of smoke, he had returned to his previous form. "This is my last secret and the most important one."
He held up his shirt and both Izuku and Madoka gasped in horror.
"Five years ago, I was wounded by a powerful villain. My injuries have limited my hero time to only three hours a day. I have lied to the masses, because without the Symbol of Peace, there would surely be chaos. And that's why I was looking for a successor-"
"That's stupid!" Madoka yelled. "Why? Why does everyone have to rely on just you? And why, why didn't you ask for help?! Are you an idiot?!"
Izuku's jaw dropped and he was fairly sure All Might had a similar expression.
"Pardon?" All Might asked.
"Not even you are above asking for help, All Might! No one is! Taking on everything yourself, you're just being hopelessly stubborn!"
Izuku realized that she must be remembering what he'd told her about Homura.
She walked forward and glared up at All Might. "It's unrealistic to shoulder the burdens of everyone! Didn't you watch Megamind? Metro Man totally burned out because of that!"
"I like to think I have a stronger character than Metro Man" All Might retorted, but his words lacked any real bite.
"Wait" Izuku cut in. "Regardless of whatever mistakes you may have made, you're looking for a successor, right?"
All Might nodded. "That's correct. Which is why it's concerning that I have two prospective successors right in front of me. It's why I decided to tell you both. If one accepts, it'd be nice to have the support of the other."
"Well," Izuku said as he crossed his arms and thought for a moment. "Why don't I just make you a successor? I'm fine with how I am and Madoka's already a powerhouse."
"Excuse me. Did you just say you could make me a successor?"
Izuku nodded. In the last few years, he'd gotten more confident in his Quirk and wasn't afraid to share details about it anymore. "My Quirk is called Glitcher. And with it, I can copy and summon people from anywhere in the multiverse. It's how I made Madoka five years ago."
"And he subsequently broke down and cried like a baby" Madoka unhelpfully added.
Izuku shot her a stink eye before continuing. "Basically, I could pick someone who would be the ideal successor. And while I wasn't able to do it before, I can now let anyone see my screen. You can't interact with it, but."
He brought up the display and motioned to All Might, all fanboyism forgotten now that he was in his element.
"Take a gander. Maybe you'll see someone who catches your eye."
He felt All Might looking over his shoulder as he scrolled through the prospective summons. He had worlds set on 'all' so it was basically a mishmash of people from different worlds.
Eventually, he saw a bony finger point at someone.
"Them. If they could be my successor . . . it'd be perfect."
Izuku smiled. "Are you sure? You're basically trusting a stranger to create a successor for you."
All Might chuckled. "On the contrary. You were my original choice. So I trust your judgment above most. Besides, I must admit, I am interested in how this works."
The green haired boy nodded and then quickly did a few edits on the person in question. Backstory, powers and the basics. He did make sure to let them know they were a copy though.
And with that, he clicked copy and summoned them to the world.
If Toshinori were honest, meeting a boy who could create copies of people from different universes was not on his bingo card. Especially not getting a successor from said boy. But if it meant being able to pass on his power and ensure the safety of the world, he'd roll with it.
Even if Young Kaname's words still rang harshly in his head. She had raised a solid point. Perhaps putting the weight of the world onto one person's shoulders had been a bit foolish. He'd make sure to let his successor know that they weren't alone.
A flash of blue light enveloped the area and the Number One Hero had to stop himself from coughing up blood in shock. There, standing before them, was the very person he had selected. Someone who was worthy of inheriting One for All.
She had short brown hair and bright orange eyes. She was wearing an Aldera Middle School uniform and was smiling brightly.
"Yo!" Hibiki Tachibana said, looking ready to take on the world.
And that's when Toshinori noticed something.
"Young Tachibana sounds exactly like Young Kaname."
"Means she has good taste," Madoka said with a grin.
"You know it!" Hibiki replied, high fiving Madoka, the two acting like they were best friends for ages.
Which, in a way, was true. Because Toshinori had noticed that Izuku had basically turned the friend duo into a friend trio.
Either way, he now had to get to know his successor. Good news was, she was already a worthy vessel, if what he had read about her was true.
He cleared his throat. "Okay, Young Tachibana. Allow us to discuss things."
The young girl beamed at him. "Alright!" she said before turning toward Izuku and Madoka. "You okay walking home alone? I know that whole sludgy thing was hard on ya."
Madoka waved her off. "Might have a few nightmares, but that's fine. Right now, I just wanna go home and smother myself in ice cream."
"Y'know what? Same" Izuku agreed.
And so the two walked off, leaving Toshinori with his prospective successor.
He could tell that this year was definitely going to be an interesting one.
