Merry Christmas Everyone, Enjoy.
Kal watched on from high in the sky as the dark storm clouds that were brought into being by some dark magic were blown away from all around him. He watched as his power gave way to the light. The sun now shining on the ground unblocked by the attempts of the Scourge. From his position in the air, he could look down and see his forces reach the halfway point of the mountain climb, while that may seem slow. It was far faster than any other group of people could do within the time they were given.
However, from this height he could also make out their target, this was the first time he was seeing Icecrown with his own eyes and he had to say. It did not fill him with hope, this fortress was dark, cold and evil. There were many reasons as to why he was choosing to strike against this enemy so soon and even by himself if that is what it takes. One of the biggest is that he has learnt his lesson from Earth, he wasn't just going to sit back and allow evil to exist due to the fear of stepping into business not his own. How many times did he allow wars to start on Earth, and allow dictators to mistreat, torture and starve their people? Why? Because he was afraid of what others would think of him? Because he didn't want people to think he was taking over control even if that wasn't the case? Because he was a hypocrite who claimed he wanted to help everyone but just didn't? All of the above?
Maybe.
But no more, maybe if he wasn't so passive the Apokolips War wouldn't have happened. Maybe Darkseid wouldn't have even found Earth in the first place with Lex and the rest of the Legion of Doom wouldn't have tried to mess with forces they didn't understand if they were harsher on them.
Well, that didn't matter now, did it? But what he's learnt is, that he wouldn't let another peaceful world fall to darkness because he was too afraid or too weak to act. No more, he would end this threat here and now.
He looked at the fortress closer, he was glad to see that the images they acquired from the satellites were accurate at the very least. The outside was so similar, that he could take more faith regarding the interior of it. He did anyway, mainly due to the eyewitness testimonies from those who had been inside it before. He couldn't trust his equipment completely, mainly due to the magical effects it no doubt has over it.
He's seen magic do a lot of... weird things to buildings and structures in his time. While he'll never claim to be an expert in such things, he has enough to get a basic idea of them all. Shifting corridors, repeating turns, messing with one's mind. Such a thing is possible, if unlikely on a structure of that size. With so many different people moving through it all the time, they would need some really advanced spells and runes to put those into effect. The only one he would say could do it would be Doctor Fate. Even Zatanna had some trouble with something so complex, even though she had a much smaller building to work with.
So unlikely but anything was possible, this world did have a lot more magic than Earth did after all. He would need to keep an eye out for that.
Not to mention the enemy themselves. He could see them all now, much more clearly than before with the clouds gone. He could see the undead Scourge in all its horror, his eyes narrowed as he looked at them. The front of the fortress was facing north towards the ocean, from what he'd seen on the maps he made. The northernmost point of the world was ocean and not ice which is just one of the many other differences between Azeroth and Earth. There was a large open set of dark fields of dirt and dead grass that moved forward before doing a U-Turn around the mountains surrounding the fortress, then when facing south it moved forward and didn't turn until it moved away from Scourge territory and out into the open continent of Northend
The most shocking thing however was not the layout of the roads they made, but the numbers themselves. Kal looked down at the undead just standing there. Not moving. Completely still. Thousands and thousands of them. Undead in all shapes and sizes, different forms of armour and weapons.
They were completely still.
They stood in rows, in formation. They were ready to march and with these numbers, they could take on the rest of the continent before moving on to the rest. Where are the dragons keeping them at bay? No. They were only defending themselves from what he saw. So, what were they waiting for? He didn't know and in truth, he didn't like what the answer could be.
Turning his attention back to the fortress, more specifically the peak of it all. He could see him, the Lich King. The one in charge of it all, he was sitting there on a throne of ice. Leaning back and... he just sat there. He wasn't moving, wasn't talking, he was completely frozen in place. Like the army of the dead in front of this dark castle. Why? Kal tilted his head and his Iris's got smaller as he zoomed in on their leader. From what he could see, there was a glowing and almost smoking blue glow coming from his eyes, so he wasn't asleep or anything like that, just sitting there.
Something he could worry about later when he gets time, he needed to meet back with the others. If this army was all stationed just outside and ready for them, they could swarm inside faster than they would have thought. It could prove to be a problem, the narrow corridor they would use to keep them contained in a killing field would make it so numbers don't matter. At least it's supposed to in a conventional sense but that didn't apply if their numbers were so great and they would be so mindless they would be crawling over each other in a massive wave.
It was too late to change the plan now, but it wouldn't hurt to make it, so they were as quiet as possible before they made it into position. Unlikely but it would go a long way to securing their victory.
Turning back around he started to fall further towards the ground, ready to meet up with those on the peak of the mountain, there were only two there currently, the rest of the force not rushing to join them. As they should, of course, there was no reason to rush this.
Despite not wanting to Alexstrasza started to lower herself to the ground once they neared the grove of the Dream. Bearly a word had been spoken between herself and her brother as they flew through the air above Northrend, there was very little to say at that moment in time she supposed. But she found herself not minding at all, she was once again flying through the air with her brother. Something she has not done for many millennia, she has forgotten much she missed, being with her family after so long.
But all good things must come to an end, as the all too familiar scent of the grove hit her nostrils, she started to lower herself, the others following behind her closely.
The grove of the dream was made similarly to the Ruby Sanctuary on the other side of Dragonblight. It was a huge pit within the ice sheet that when over a mile downwards creating an area that wasn't too dissimilar to a crater that a meteor would cause. However, instead of a slight hill that went from normal ground level to the deepest point, it was a sheer wall of ice that went straight downwards.
If one was to stand on the edge and look down. Unlike the Ruby Sanctuary that was grass, flowers, streams and one large tree in the middle. The Emerald Grove was instead a large and lush green forest having many large trees and plants, even some wildlife that has little business being in the cold north, but the grove provides comfort to them. A large difference between the two sanctuaries would be the nests, while the red flight nests were nestled in the heart of their nest under the tree and normally protected by the Alexstrasza herself. Throughout the ground across all of the grove, many different nests were placed throughout it. While many would call this foolish and asking for trouble, the dragons knew better. She wasn't sure if mortals would be able to see it with their own eyes but to the dragons, the vile that hangs over the grove is easy to see.
It was a thin sheet of magical power that hung over the grove entire. It gave the look of a small dome over the grove that when hit with something transformed it into something useful. The snow for example was falling peacefully from the sky, upon hitting the dome it was changed in order to accommodate those inside it, like making sure the heat remains high, giving the grove a high humidity and temperature.
If a more intelligent mortal being crossed the dome they would be left alone, unless they had ill intentions, then would simply fall to sleep and either starve, dehydrate or be awoken by the those of the green flight.
Nothing would happen to them however, they were kin to each other after all.
When the Aspect of life's strong legs touched the ground just shy of the drop down into the grove. She felt Malygos do the same next to her. All around them, both of their flights flew in large circles above the grove, not getting too close but not shying away. It was just a little rude to drop in on another flight nesting ground without permission. Thankfully being an Aspect had its advantages.
Feel the ground shake as another large dragon landed beside her. She turned her head and watched as her prime consort stepped forward towards her "Like before, this meeting would be best if kept private" she started "Make sure the others behave themselves and keep an eye out for the enemy. We are not to be disturbed" she ordered.
Korialsrasz bowed his head towards her "Of course my love, I will set up a perimeter" he added before turning and flying back up into the air, no doubt to organize the others.
"Come then, my patience is thin enough already" Malygos added with a sharp tone before he stepped forward and glided into the grove, sawing over the trees as he did so.
Alexstrasza rolled her eyes slightly as she flew in after him. The heat of the grove hit her as she moved through the barrier, she had been to this grove many different times throughout the last ten thousand years. Malygos on the other hand has not, this grove was not the first the Green Flight has used as a nest. And this was not built until after the War of the Ancients, so after Malygos' mind was broken. He has never been here before as far as she knows, yet he flies through the trees like this is his own nest. There are some things that dragons just know from instinct, the nests of the others being one such example, there are many others of course but she didn't have time to think about it now.
For she caught sight of her sister. She of the great dream, the dragon aspect of the Emerald Dream and the protector of all environments. Her own clutch sister "Ysera" her voice spoke with a calm but powerful tone. It needed to be in this case or she wouldn't be heard.
Ysera was currently in a sleep position with her eyes closed, not too surprising considering Ysera was charged with overseeing the Emerald Dream. Meaning she needed to be in there to do it, from what she was told even when awake Ysera has to split her mind between two points in the world, being present in both at the same time.
Upon hearing her voice, the great green dragon stared "Sister" her voice was carried on the wind without her body moving much, nor her mouth opening "And... brother?" she added as she no doubt sensed Malygos "It warms my heart to see you in my grove brother, truly" she added.
"I'm sure" he said back quickly and without much emotion, not great but baby steps "Now wake up, we must speak" he said back sharply.
"Yes we do" she agreed "but I do believe it would be best for you both to join me in the dream. I'm in a meeting I believe you should be involved in. Come, join me" she said to them just as calmly as she always spoke.
Alexstrasza was already moving towards her sister without any hesitation. While the Emerald Dream was not her domain, and she would never claim otherwise, she has been into the dream many times in her life. Though she tried to never stay long. Once she reached her sister she knelt down onto her stomach. Before closing her eyes, however, she looked over to Malygos who remained in place. He opened his mouth to complain about all of this but when Alexstrasza raised an eyebrow at him, telling him without saying that he was being a little petty.
He let out a tired sigh before getting down onto his stomach before lowering his head to the ground. Something Alexstrasza joined him in doing and they both closed their eyes, allowing their minds to enter the Emerald Dream.
There are many things that can and do be said regarding the Emerald Dream, for many it is an escape from the horrors of the world, for some it is a duty to be protected and for a couple, it is seen as a place to look to for inspiration and study.
The Dream is a carbon copy of the world they live in, the one primary difference being it is what the world would look like if intelligent life never came to be. A vast wilderness that was only ever at the mercy of itself, a place where those who only had a deep connection to the world and the environment were allowed to tread, mainly being the dragons of the green and the most skilled of the druids. Those who would only ever respect such a place and help defend it if need be.
Both the aspects of life and magic appeared in a large opening, not too dissimilar to the grove they went to sleep within. There were a couple of differences, of course, the main ones being the inhabitants. All around them in the immediate area, they could see many green dragons both standing and flying around them.
Malygos' body lifted from the ground as if just waking up from a sleeping position. He rose and saw as his sister did the same. Unlike the two Aspects whose bodies were see-through as if they were ghosts. A side effect of only mentally a spiritually entering the dream instead of physically. Many of the smaller green bodies were solid, though some of them were translucent like themselves.
Further forward in the centre of the grove, the largest of the green dragons. Yesra was standing tall in all her majesty. Though his blue eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at the smaller figure the aspect of the dream seemed to be conversing with him. In front of the Yesra was a much smaller figure "Mortal" he snarled slightly as both he and Alexstrasza stepped forward.
He didn't think his voice was heard but in truth, he wouldn't be surprised if it was. Not that he would care either way. Many heads turned to face the two aspects as they approached. It was little surprise that Yesra did so quickly enough "Malygos" she said with a kind voice and as he looked at her he could detect no deceit in her face at the joy upon seeing him "Sister" she added turning to Alexstrasza "It is so good to see you both enter the dream once again"
"I am glad to be here sister" Alexstrasza said joyfully as she looked around at all the green dragons near them, all of which, even the eldest and most experienced looked at them with interest, for it really has been an age since two different aspects have come into the dream together.
While to two clutch sisters embraced each other for a moment, Malygos closed his eyes as his claws dug into the soil under him. Having so many dragons of another flight around him hasn't happened since... that day. It was bringing up some really bad memories. Memories that he would very much like to put behind him "brother" a voice called to him. He opened his eyes to see Yesra right in front of him, he really must have been spiralling into a dark place if he didn't even hear her approach "I meant what I said" she continued as she started to rub her body onto his "It brings me no shortage happiness to see you here again"
He held his head up as he tried to ignore her head rubbing against his neck, a very affectionate display, something he was still not completely comfortable with. Another of the many differences between himself and the others, he always believed that affection is a private affair "...yes" was all he said as he tried not to look so uncomfortable.
The green dragon let out a chuckle at his awkwardness before pulling back "Of course" she said before turning around "And what brings my brother and sister here?" she asked them.
Thankfully it was Alexstrasza who spoke up next, so he didn't have to "I believe that it is time to deal with the undead" As she spoke the two dragons walked forward towards where Yesra was at the start. Which was when the smaller figure decided to step forward himself. Standing tall next to the aspect of the dream. A Night Elf that even to Malygos was familiar "Arch Druid" Alexstrasza said, giving a small nod to the Elf.
The man who in return placed a hand on his chest and gave a much lower bow towards the Life-Binder "It is an honour to see you again your grace" he said before he rose and turned his head to stare at the blue aspect with nothing short of wonder "Lord Malygos?" he asked in amazement, though he quickly regained himself before bowing his head "it please my heart to see you again my lord"
"Mortal" was all the aspect of magic said back to him. He's well aware of this Night Elf, this Malfurion. The name started to become more well-known during the War of the Ancients before the great betrayal. He is aware of the respect the others may have for him, but it was not one he shared.
As if sensing his hostility towards the druid, Yesra continued "It is fortuitous that you choose now to come to me with such a request my kin" she said turning fully to face the other two aspects as Malfurion stood by her side. Much like Yesra, his body was also translucent.
"Due to the mortal?" the aspect of magic asked back "This Kal-El who I have been made aware is here" he added.
"Not just him" she of the dream said back calmly "though from what I've been told, calling him a mortal may not be the most accurate description for him"
"Indeed" Malfurion spoke up as he looked at their faces "I have witnessed the memories of those who fought alongside him. The power he wields is beyond impressive. Not to mention his extreme technological and scientific understanding" he listed.
"The more I hear of this man, the more concerned I become" Malygos added with a slight sigh.
"I do not believe fear is necessary regarding this man" the Life-Binder added as she glanced at her brother "Though my conversation with him was brief, I never doubted that he cared for others, the passion in his words was powerful. He desires to protect life was as strong as the oldest of my brood" she said before turning back to her sister "and fortuitous how exactly?" she asked.
"While the arrival of Kal-El and this force he has acquired from seemingly no-were" she quickly turned to look at the lord of magic "which I do find slightly concerning" she added before turning to her sister "is very fortunate, it seems to have been only the first. Malfurion has informed me that he has arrived on Northrend with his own force due to seeking to aid Kal-El in his war against the Scourge. But he was not the only one. A large host of the freed undead, the Forsaken I believe they call themselves have arrived as well, no doubt to seek their vengeance against the Lich King for his crimes"
That information had been a surprise to the others "Is that so?" Malygos asked with a look of contemplation. He wasn't happy having so many mortals nearby, but that didn't mean he couldn't understand the appeal of using them as cannon fodder against the enemy. Preventing the loss of any more of his kin "Do you know how many they have?" he asked.
"Assuming that they haven't picked up any reinforcements" Malfurion started to speak instead of the green dragon, knowing that he had a better idea "Then they should number around five hundred strong, not as many as one would like but Sylvanas is no fool. Those that she brought with her would be the best she has"
The tactician in the blue dragon was starting to come out as he thought about all he now knew, and it didn't look good "That will not be enough to beat back the forces of the Scourge. Let alone bring an end to them" he informed the others.
"Not as we are now" the Life-Binder added "but if we can all group up, together we may be able to prevail"
Before the others could weigh in, the lord of magic shook his head "It will not be enough. We lack the power needed to stave off the numbers of the enemy. If they were all mindless undead then we could do it ourselves" he spoke as the others listened in "but the enemy is cunning, and their magical skills are... gruesome as well as sneaky in their nature. In a head-on attack, we would not win. Not without this Kal-El you all seem so impressed by. Where is he anyway?" he asked them.
"We do not know" Yesra spoke up "I have my children scouring the dream for him but so far we have found nothing"
"He would not leave" Alexstrasza was quick to say "he held great conviction, he is here somewhere, no doubt trying to find the best way to eliminate the Scourge without a frontal assault. He is powerful and his forces have weapons we have not seen before but I doubt even they could beat the Scourge on their own"
"You seem very quick to speak up for him sister" Yesra added with a hint of teasing in her tone "Why so sure?" she asked.
The Life-Binder made no note of the comment and spoke "I told you, when he came to see me there was a passion in his voice that does not come about often, I do not believe he would abandon Northrend unless he had to"
"This could count towards him having too" Malygos added unhelpfully, earning an annoyed side-eye look from the red.
"I agree with the Life-Binder" Malfurion added as the dragons looked at him "If Kal and his forces are unable to defeat the Scourge in an open war, and I'm not saying he can't. Then he would look for another means of victory" he turned and looked towards the blue dragon "Lord Malygos, if it was up to you, what would you do?" he asked.
The question admittedly did come as a surprise to the others but nevertheless, he thought about it, thinking about what he would do in that situation. A small force to defeat an army of the undead, retreat wasn't an option, nor was a prolonged war as hit-and-run tactics mean nothing against the Scourge. Assuming he knew all he needed to "I would sneak in a cut the head from the snake" he said to the others "Without their master's command, the Scourge army would fall apart and cannibalize themselves in the chaos" he told them all.
While of course not taking his word as absolute, it was enough for them to think it over "If they could remove the Lich King from his position, the Scourge would crumble as a result" the druid added.
"Most likely, but how does this help us?" Ysera asked the group.
"If we know what Kal-El is doing, then we can provide aid to him without meeting and planning in person" Alexstrasza pointed out to her clutch sister "The best question would be how?" she added, leaving the question open-ended.
"We move all of our forces" Malygos added before anyone else could "Meet up with these Forsaken and march on Ice Crowns Black Gate. Draw out the Scourges armies, empty those lands and provide Kal-El with an easier time to sneak into the fortress and end this threat" he added looking to the others.
All of whom were quiet as they thought about what was said, it did have its merits, they could all see that well enough but then of course there was the biggest issue, if he was wrong about what Kal was doing then it would all be for nothing "We would not be able to achieve victory" Yesra added looking towards her brother.
"No, we cannot" he agreed "But we would be able to hold the line long enough for this alien to prove to me that he is here for the protection of this world"
"Which he does by destroying the Scourge" Alexstrasza said back.
It wasn't a question "Correct. Are we committed to this?" he asked the group.
Of course, none of them were particularly fond of the idea of a plan that could wipe them all out being based on a gamble but on the other hand, they all knew that the longer they wait, the stronger the enemy shall become. They needed to act before it was too late and if they waited for Kal to make his move first then it may be too late. Of course, being able to speak to him now would be ideal but if he couldn't be found, even though the tool that was the Emerald Dream proved to be ineffective, which by itself was both impressive and worrying.
Though that would require a conversation for another time, it went without saying that Yesra would very much like to know how he was capable of such a feat. Speaking of, the green dragon turned to face the others and spread her wings wide before them "While war is never something I enjoy, do not think I do not understand the necessity of it. With the reds and blues together, I would not let you stand alone. The Green Dragonflight shall fly with you" he stated, and it was only then that Malygos noticed so many of the larger dragons around them started to leave the area. Those that were solid in form walked away from them and those that were transparent simply faded away. He didn't doubt that they would all leave the dream and find them in the waking world.
Something he himself would do soon enough "And what of you druid?" he asked the smallest being of the four.
Malfurion turned his head to look at the blue dragon, knowing full well what was being asked of him, he answered quickly enough "Myself and those with me know full well why we are here. To end the Scourge before it is too late. If you would allow it, we would be honoured to fight with you" he said bowing his head towards him.
"So be it" he nodded back at the Elf before turning to the dragons "You three shall gather your forces at The Crystal Vice. I will take my flight east and confront these... Forsaken. If they prove to me that they are here for the right reasons, then they may join us for this battle" he said as he commanded his body to wake up and return to the waking world.
As his body started to fade completely. The Life-Binder turned to face him and asked "And if they prove to be false?" she asked.
"If that is the case then they cannot be trusted to be here, let alone fight beside us. They are lying or carry some alternative motive. Then I shall annihilate them" he finished before his body faded away to nothingness.
And we shall leave it here, I hope you're all having a good Christmas. The plans are all coming together now, and the assault is about to begin. I'm looking forward to doing Superman Vs Lich King. Anyway, let me know what you all think in the reviews down below and I'll see you in the next chapter.
