Anthony's story begins!
Chapter Nine: Capital R Rake
"Hold still," Letty laughed as she fixed the hem of Eloise's gown. "If you end up with blood stains from me poking you simply because you do not wish to attend your own coming out, mama will have both of our heads and I happen to like my head attached to my neck, thank you."
"Oh, fine," Eloise groaned, staying still. "I do like what you've done with the gown, by the way. In case I did not make my appreciation known."
"Of course," Letty smiled as she stood. "Alright. Do a turn. Let me see you."
Eloise did a turn around the room, the two still ignoring her family as they knocked at the door, the two having kicked out the maids half an hour ago, besides Elsie who just gave them both amused smirks. Letty was sure she could hear Daphne's voice now but decided not to speak on it until she knew for sure. Eloise stopped in front of Letty, looking put out.
"You look beautiful," Letty smiled. "Can't even tell that you have trousers on beneath the dress."
Eloise sighed, hands going to her hips before she looked in the mirror, assessing herself.
"Here's the head dress," Letty stated, grabbing the head dress that Eloise said made her head itch.
"I hate that thing," Eloise groaned.
"The sooner we get going, the sooner you can take it off," Letty smiled as she pinned the piece to Eloise's hair. "I brought you a fan. It's rather hot in the room while waiting for your turn."
Eloise grabbed Letty's hand, squeezing it.
"Thank you," she said sincerely.
"Of course," Letty smiled. "Are you ready? Elsie will accompany you for the day."
"Yes," Eloise smiled, looking towards the door.
"I'll go first," Letty smirked. "Elsie will follow behind you."
"Are you nervous about seeing him?" Eloise questioned.
Letty hadn't seen Benedict when she'd shown up at Bridgerton house last night to take in Eloise's dress and start on the hem. She and Eloise had eaten breakfast in Eloise's room so that Eloise could avoid her mother, so Letty hadn't had to set her eyes on Benedict yet since returning from the countryside.
"No," Letty shook her head. "All is well."
"And the gown you're wearing isn't at all to show him what he lost?" Eloise smirked.
"Oh, it absolutely is," Letty smirked. "Come now."
Elsie opened the bedroom door and the Bridgertons immediately all stepped back, giving room. Letty walked out first, head held high and shoulders back. She smiled brightly before stepping behind Anthony and turning to watch as Eloise stepped into view.
"Not. A. Word," Eloise threatened, seeing the looks on her families faces.
Letty smirked as Elsie gave Eloise a gentle push, forcing her to step out of the room. Eloise looked to Letty, nerves beginning to get to her. Letty stood straight, giving Eloise a pointed look before Eloise took the hint and copied Letty's posture. The group headed down the stairs and to the carriages, Letty helping Eloise with her head piece before stepping back.
"Surely you don't think you can get out of coming with us," Anthony smirked.
"Wouldn't dream of it," Letty smirked. "I just wished to ride with Hyacinth and Gregory."
"Good luck," Anthony laughed.
"I'll be in need of it," Letty laughed, going to the carriage with the youngest Bridgertons. "Don't hit your brother. Stop trying to bite your sister."
Letty separated the younger two, making them sit on opposite benches on opposite ends of the carriage as she sat beside Hyacinth. The carriages took off and Letty pulled a few candies from her handbag, passing each of the children one to get them smiling again. Once they reached the castle, the two each took one of Letty's hands, smiling and behaving for what may very well be the first time in their lives, causing Anthony, Violet, and Daphne to stare in shock before leading everyone inside, Eloise and Violet splitting off from the others, Eloise already fanning herself as she worked herself up again.
Letty stood in front of the crowd in the announcing room, Daphne beside Hyacinth and Francesca beside Gregory. Anthony and Benedict stood behind the women and children, standing tall and looking proud of their family, even if Letty could see Benedict out of the corner of her eye fidgeting a bit to keep himself from staring at her. She smirked, feeling rather brazen in her light pink gown that hugged her figure very well. A figure that she had grown into a bit more over the off season.
Names began being called and Letty kept glancing at the exit doors, waiting. Pen had told her she'd tried timing it to save Eloise from being presented, both of them knowing just how nervous Eloise was for this moment. Eloise and Violet were announced and Letty began chewing her lip, glancing between Eloise and the door before she stood straight, catching Eloise's eye and giving her a reassuring nod so she would stand tall again.
Eloise stood tall, looking more regal than Letty had ever thought that she could, and stepped forward. The doors opened then, a royal footman coming forward and holding out a tray for the queen. The queen grabbed her copy of Lady Whistledown, laughing happily before dismissing everyone and hurrying away. Letty smirked as copies of the gossip column was delivered, paying for her copy and opening it, pretending to read as if she hadn't helped Penelope just two nights before with the rewrite.
Benedict eyed Letty for a moment, thinking her reactions strange before reading his copy of Lady Whistledown. Eloise rushed to them, begging Letty to help her with the head dress as she began dragging the beautiful blonde away. Benedict noticed then that Letty's hair was actually a bit darker than it had been previously, telling him that she hadn't been in the sun much over the past few months. Once he noticed her hair, he noticed everything else as well. He noticed the way her body now had more feminine curves and the way the gown she wore hugged those curves. She'd gotten an inch taller, bringing the top of her head up to his shoulder now. He watched her walk away until Anthony bumped his arm, forcing him to look away and join their family as they made their exit.
Letty and Eloise were already by the carriages, Letty pulling pins from Eloise's hair before removing the head piece, leaving Eloise's hair pulled up without a hair out of place somehow. Eloise tossed the head piece into the carriage, climbing in as the rest of the Bridgertons bar Colin, who had yet to return from his travels, reached them. Letty climbed into a carriage with the troublesome youngest and Benedict had to force himself to not go to her carriage as he climbed in behind Anthony and Fran.
Once home, Letty helped Eloise out of her dress before boxing it up and setting it at the top of her closet for safe keeping. They then met the rest of the family in the main sitting room where Francesca was practicing on the piano.
"Eloise, dance with Gregory. You both need the practice," Violet insisted, waving Eloise forward.
"Do you need practice, Letty?" Gregory offered his hand.
"I'd rather keep scuffs off of my slippers today," Letty smirked, pushing Gregory towards Eloise.
The two began dancing, Eloise stepping on Gregory and misstepping every few moments.
"I don't think Eloise is a very good dancer," Hyacinth stated and Letty moved forward, separating Eloise and Gregory.
"Let me," Letty smirked, taking Eloise's waist. "Might help that we're closer in height. Just follow my lead."
Eloise sighed before nodding. Letty began leading Eloise into a waltz, avoiding being stepped on quickly before telling Eloise to slow down. She slowly walked Eloise through the steps, counting quietly at first before smiling as Eloise finally began to get it.
"Good," Letty smiled. "Now Gregory again."
"Do I have to?" Gregory groaned.
"Yes," Letty and Violet answered together before exchanging smirks with one another.
"It seems Colin has added Albania to his list of travels," Anthony announced, reentering the room.
"It's nice for him that he can just decide to do that, since he's a man," Eloise stated, letting Gregory lead her around the room.
"Join us for tea, dear?" Violet asked.
"I'm afraid I cannot. I need to fill your coffers at the modiste and oversee hiring extra staff. I believe Letty, you wished to join me?" Anthony looked to Letty.
"Of course," Letty nodded, standing and setting her tea cup down.
"Also, I'll need you ring when you have the chance, mother," Anthony said as if it were normal, everyday conversation.
"I'm sorry. Why do you need the ring? Has someone caught your eye already?" Violet gasped.
"No," Anthony shook his head. "I just wish to be prepared. I've already made a list and arranged interviews with the eligible misses."
"I will be happy to provide the ring once you have found someone. It's in safe keeping at Aubrey Hall," Violet explained before Anthony nodded and looked to Letty.
"Ready?"
"Yes," Letty nodded, following Anthony from the house, Elsie following behind them.
"We shall make a stop at your home first. Pick up any paperwork that you need from your father's old office," Anthony told her.
"I have it all on the table by the front door. I wanted it ready to grab just in case," Letty explained.
"Good thinking," Anthony smiled to her. "Are you still opposed to marriage, Letty?"
"I've never truly been opposed to it," Letty sighed. "I just did not have the best season last year. I wouldn't be opposed to it if my future husband could offer me a life that would bring me more satisfaction than the life I currently have."
"What do you mean?" Anthony asked curiously.
"I mean, I make my own money. I have people that I love and care for. He would have to offer more than what I already have to make me happier than I already am," Letty explained before walking up the stairs to her home, reaching inside of the door, and snagging the papers that she needed. "I want children but I don't want to have children with someone who would keep me from living the way that I do. For example, if my husband were to tell me that I could not spend so much time with you and your family, I do not think I would want him as a husband. If he told me that pursuing my passions was forbidden, then I think I would rather not spend my life with him."
"Wouldn't children get in the way of those passions?" Anthony asked, helping Letty into the carriage.
"Absolutely not," Letty shook her head. "I would spend the majority of my time raising my children, yes, but I would have time when they are with a governess or tutor to sew a bit while seeing over their lessons."
"How many children do you want?"
"Well, I grew up alone since my brothers were all grown by the time that I was old enough to remember. I remember how lonely it felt until I meant Penelope. I also see how your family is, how large and happy it feels. I know a large family would be difficult to handle, but I do like a good challenge. I would like at least four children."
"And how would you handle it if your daughter had a spending problem?"
"Well, firstly, I would have all of my children on an allowance to begin with to teach them responsibility. If I discovered one of my children had a habit of spending more than they had, I would shorten the allowance and make them work to pay off their debts. Chores around the house and the such," Letty explained.
"And how many languages do you know?" Anthony questioned.
"Are you practicing on me how to speak with the woman of the ton that are of age?" Letty smirked.
"You answer me first," Anthony smirked.
"Fine. I know English, obviously, French, German, Italian, Latin, and Greek. My mother wanted me to know as many languages as possible. I can also write in all of those languages as well," Letty offered.
"I am practicing," Anthony sighed.
"Maybe try to sound less intimidating," Letty offered.
"However do you mean?" Anthony asked, seeming confused.
"You are not just looking for a wife. Women are looking for a husband in you. If you ask the questions the way that you did, women will see you as difficult to please and choose to not be courted by you. Ease into the questions a bit more. It'll make it easier to weed the women out if you do not seem so hostile, make them more comfortable," Letty offered. "They're more likely to open up and give more honest answers if you have a more gentle approach. Now, tell me what is on your list for these women. I may very well be able to help."
"Tolerable, dutiful, suitable enough hips for childbearing, and at least half a brain," Anthony repeated his words from earlier with Benedict.
"What of her soul, though?" Letty asked, voice soft.
"A good mother."
"Ah, yes. The only thing that truly matters," Letty rolled her eyes. "You do realize women are not merely cattle, yes? We do have minds and other things to contribute. You are a Viscount. You will need someone who is a good mother, yes, but you will need a women with a mind so that she may be Viscountess."
"What would you know of being a Viscountess?' Anthony asked, trying to be rude but Letty could see beneath Anthony's rough exterior, something he hated to be reminded of.
"I have studied every role that a young woman who is out in society may become, therefore I know the roles of a Viscountess. I know a viscountess would be expected to participate in charitable activities, cultural events, and philanthropic initiatives and be given access to noble figures, dignitaries, and other high-ranking individuals. She would be a public figure and you do not want someone representing the family with no other attributes besides being a mother. It would be an unkindness to your family to do such a thing," Letty told Anthony sternly.
Once Anthony and Letty had settled business around town, Anthony dropped Letty and Elsie at home before heading home himself. Through the next three days, Letty listened as Anthony explained every conversation he'd had with the ladies of the ton and Letty explained how he mucked up each conversation all on his own. Eventually, she grew tired of his whining.
"Maybe if you spent less time in brothels and more time heeding what I told you days ago, you would have a wife in mind already," Letty told him, giving him a blank stare.
It was two more days before Anthony rushed into what was now being called Letty's office.
"Letty, there was a woman out riding this morning. I must learn who she is as soon as possible," he stated, seeming frazzled.
"Must you?" Letty smirked, setting her quill aside.
"She will be at the Danbury ball. There is no doubt," Anthony was pacing now and Letty could not stop watching, holding in a laugh. "She is not like any lady I have spoken to thus far."
"What makes her so different?" Letty asked curiously.
"She was racing her horse across the countryside without any sort of mind," Anthony stated.
"And her name?"
"She did not give it," Anthony complained.
"Then we shall find her at the ball tonight," Letty smiled.
"You need to get ready," Anthony nodded. "We are to present a united front if I am to find my wife at the Danbury ball. Be sure to get the ink from your fingers."
"I know how to ready myself for a ball, Anthony," Letty laughed, standing from the desk and coming around it to lean against it as Anthony stopped his pacing.
"Of course," Anthony breathed.
"I assume you're heading to your familiar home once you leave here?" Letty questioned.
"I am."
"Good. I have two dresses for you to take with you. One for mama and one for Eloise," Letty nodded, heading out the office door, Anthony following after her.
"Thank you, Letty," Anthony smiled as they reached the front room, the boxes already ready for Anthony to take with him, a footman prepared to carry the boxes for him.
"Of course," Letty smiled gently. "I shall be ready on time to join you for the night. Now be on your way so that I may begin preparing myself."
Anthony nodded, leaving the house, footman in tow. Letty took a bath, scrubbing at her fingers to remove the ink before washing her hair. Elsie ran a towel through Letty's hair, forcing it to dry before dressing Letty in the pink dress she'd made for herself, it matching Eloise's light blue and Violet's lilac gowns for the night. Once her jewels were in place and makeup was done, Elsie pulled Letty's hair into a braided bun, a tiara being placed on her head. Letty smiled at her reflection before leaving Everly house and walking to the Bridgerton's, joining Eloise, Violet, Anthony, and Benedict in their carriage and calming Eloise with her presence. Once they arrived at Lady Danbury's ball, they were shown to what looked like an old greenhouse, flowers surrounding the entire area inside and out and making Letty want to turn around and leave.
"Stop fussing with your dress," Anthony told Eloise once they were inside.
"You look lovely dear," Violet assured Eloise.
"I look like a prize calf, trussed up for auction," Eloise argued.
"Mmmoooo," Benedict joked, causing Anthony to smirk.
"At least your nose hasn't gone red due to the flowers," Letty offered.
"Even Daphne felt most apprehensive at her first official ball, and look how well her season turned out," Violet tried.
"Alright," Eloise sighed as someone approached them, eyes on Eloise.
"Come, sister," Benedict took Eloise's are. "The cakes at these occasions are surprisingly good."
Letty hid behind Anthony, hiding her laughter as Benedict rescued Eloise.
"It truly is a sparse crop," Anthony sighed, seeming disappointed.
"Oh, I'm sure there is someone here who will charm you," Violet insisted before raising her voice. "After all, this is the season the viscount intends to find a wife!"
"You honestly just did that?" Anthony seemed shocked but Letty was trying to hold in her laughter.
"I believe I did," Violet smirked as debutantes approached quickly, holding out their wrists for Anthony to sign their dance cards.
Anthony looked to Letty, begging with his eyes for assistance. She simply held out her wrist, allowing Anthony to take her first dance so he could have a moment of reprieve before having to dance with the others. After signing multiple dance cards, the herd thinned, women still standing close by and trying to speak with Anthony.
The music began and Anthony took Letty's arm, leading her to the dance floor. Letty could no longer hold in her laughter, causing Anthony to glare for a moment before the two bowed to one another and began their dance.
"So, do you see her yet?" Letty questioned.
"No," Anthony shook his head, eyes still on the crowd.
"Well, you gave me a description. I shall keep my eyes peeled as well. That is if I don't sneeze until the foundation crumbles around us before we find her," Letty offered.
"I am sorry, Letty. Had I known the theme for tonight, I would not have insisted you come," Anthony offered.
"And miss Eloise's first ball? I think not," Letty smirked. "I wouldn't miss seeing that for the world."
"It is good that Benedict saved her from the callers," Anthony nodded.
"You are good brothers," Letty agreed. "Oh, who is she?"
"Where?" Anthony asked, before spinning Letty slightly so that they could face where Letty nodded her head to. "I do not know."
"Not your riding partner?" Letty smirked.
"No, though they do share a slight similarity," Anthony offered.
"Maybe a sister or cousin," Letty offered. "I shall find out for you."
Anthony smiled brightly to Letty as the music ended. Anthony bowed and Letty curtseyed before allowing Anthony to lead her from the floor. Letty and Anthony shared a nod before separating, Letty searching the crowd for the pretty lady she's seen just moments before. Instead, she found Eloise and Pen.
"Is she welting?" Penelope asked quietly, causing Letty to hold in a laugh.
"Or punch, if you prefer?" Mr. Bunder asked.
"A plant pun, if you're wondering," Pen added, knowing she was being ignored completely by the gentleman, but causing Letty to have to walk away so she would not laugh too loudly.
"Have you seen Eloise, Letty?" Violet asked.
"Just over there," Letty pointed with a quiet chuckle.
"Oh, thank you, dear," Violet sighed, rushing away.
Letty saw her then. The woman Anthony had described to her. She was rather beautiful, even with the stern expression on her face as she spoke quietly with Lady Danbury. Lady Danbury caught Letty's eye and a smile appeared on her face, nodding Letty over. Letty smiled brightly, joining them.
"Lady Danbury," Letty curtsied. "How are you tonight? I must say that you've outdone yourself again."
"Miss Everly. I am surprised that you have lasted this long into the night. From what I hear, flowers and you are unagreeable," Lady Danbury offered.
"Well, now I feel as if you chose this theme just to test me," Letty laughed before turning to the beautiful woman. "I apologize. I am Miss Letitia Everly. It is a pleasure to meet you, miss?"
"Miss Kate Sharma," Lady Danbury introduced. "She, her mother, and her sister are staying with me for the season."
"Your kindness knows no bounds, Lady Danbury," Letty offered.
"Flattery will get you everywhere, Miss Everly," Lady Danbury smirked.
"Well, I shall continue in my flattering ways," Letty smirked. "Miss Sharma, was it your sister or cousin that I saw dancing with the baron moments ago?"
"My sister," Miss Sharma confirmed. "We are here to find her a husband this season."
"Not you?"
"Not in particularly," Miss Sharma shook her head.
"I shall have to introduce you to Miss Eloise Bridgerton," Letty smiled. "She does not want for a husband, either."
"Sounds like a right mind," Miss Sharma mumbled.
"What was that?" Lady Danbury questioned.
"Nothing of importance," Miss Sharma spoke clearly. "I wish for some air. I shall return momentarily."
Miss Sharma left in a hurry and Letty turned to Lady Danbury.
"She seems a delight," Letty smirked.
"She shall be a handful. Her sister, Edwina Sharma, is quite the delight though," Lady Danbury sighed before smirking at Letty. "Now, I hear you have the inside scoop on what Anthony Bridgerton is searching for in a wife?"
"Where ever did you hear such a thing?" Letty feinted a gasp before offering Lady Danbury a smirk.
"Come, now, child. I have my sources," Lady Danbury laughed. "Now, pray tell, what is he searching for?"
"He wants children, so a woman with a good heart. He wants to be able to have intelligent conversations as well, so a well-read woman is a must, especially if she is to be a Viscountess," Letty explained. "She'll need to be able to get along with his family no matter what. I fear a few of them may very well be capable of scaring off certain prospects."
"A brave lady is the one who can blend with his family," Lady Danbury spoke. "Has he looked to you as a prospect?"
"Not to my knowledge. Why ever would he though?" Letty was confused.
"Well, the woman you just described. You have a kind heart, are well educated, and you are already close with his family. I hear you have even taken to calling Lady Bridgerton mama on some occasions," Lady Danbury pointed out.
"Lady Bridgerton came around quite a bit during the off season to see me. Twice a week, in fact. She, and Anthony, have both taken me under their wings in a way," Letty explained before seeing Violet and Benedict nearby.
"Have you seen your brother or your sister?" Violet asked Benedict.
"They managed to escape you? Good for them," Benedict smirked and Letty sighed, catching their attention and causing Benedict to turn and walk away as quickly as possible.
"Lady Danbury," Violet curtsied and Lady Danbury chuckled slightly. "Splendid evening."
"For the most part," Lady Danbury agreed. "There are a few guests whose absence I might not have regretted."
"I do hope I am not one of them," Violet laughed lightly.
"You and I have common interests this season, it seems," Lady Danbury nodded.
"I heard. Your wards, I look forward to meeting them," Violet nodded.
"And I look forward to showing these other mamas how the game ought to be played," Lady Danbury smirked. "Though, it appears you have already stoked the fire by informing them of the viscount's intentions for this season."
"My son said he was ready. Who am I to question it?"
"They must all come around eventually, I suppose."
"Lady Danbury," Kate approached with her sister in tow. "We wish to leave."
"Miss Sharma, allow me to introduce you…"
"Charmed," Miss Sharma dismissed Violet and Letty raised a brow in challenge. "My mama is already in our carriage. We will see you at home."
Letty took Violet's arm, leading her away so that Lady Danbury's conversation would remain private. Once the Sharma's left in a hurry, Letty released Violet, letting her return to Lady Danbury as she left the hall, taking a deep breath of fresh air before she sneezed thrice. Letty let out a groan of annoyance before looking back towards the building. She debated going inside and letting Anthony know she'd found his mystery woman and informing him of her departure, but she was sure he'd probably gone off with some of the other men at this point.
Letty sighed before looking towards the smoking lounge, shrugged before heading towards it. She knocked a few times before standing aside, waiting. Lord Fife answered the door moments later, giving Letty a confused look.
"Is Anthony in?" Letty asked. "I wished to speak with him before I take my leave."
"Of course, my lady," Lord Fife nodded, shutting the door.
A moment later, Anthony was at the door, giving Letty a confused look.
"I found your mystery woman," she smiled.
"As did I, unfortunately," Anthony sighed. "She is not what I expected."
"She is Lady Danbury's ward for the season. She is here to find her sister a husband and nothing else," Letty explained.
"That may explain it then," Anthony nodded. "Are you alright? Your nose has gone quite red."
"The flowers seem to have gotten to me. I shall take my leave now. I just wished to inform you before I did so," Letty explained.
"I shall call for a carriage," Anthony began stepping out of the room.
"No need," Letty shook her head. "The fresh air and the walk shall help my nose to calm. Enjoy your evening."
Letty turned and walked away, heading to the path that would lead her home. After a few minutes, Letty's nose began to feel a bit better. She had only sneezed a few more times during the walk thankfully. She hoped it would not be so red tomorrow afternoon when she was to host a tea for the newest ladies of the ton. She'd have to get invitations over to Lady Danbury's wards as quickly as possible.
Once home, Letty went to her office, writing envelopes for Miss Kate Sharma and Miss Edwina Sharma before letting the ink dry. She added the invitations and closed the letters with the Everly waxed seal, calling for Donny, her most favorite courier, to deliver the invitations to Lady Danbury's home as soon as possible. Donny left immediately, Letty telling him to take the carriage in the process. Letty fell asleep with a tissue in hand, waking every so often to blow her nose and complain about her lack of sleep.
There is nothing quite like the sweet-scented smell of success. But after taking in the scene from last night's festivities, it is clear the season won't be quite so fragrant for everyone.
The Viscount Bridgerton's own mama may have loudly declared her eldest son's lofty intentions to marry, yet I cannot be the only one wondering if this former Capital-R-Rake is, indeed, ready to flourish. Perhaps the viscount, like the rest of us, is simply waiting for the queen to finally name her diamond.
Or perhaps this author should take matters into her own hands.
"Pen, please stop challenging the queen," Letty groaned over her morning tea in the new wing that had been built onto the house.
The room was large, windows on three sides of the room and allowing so much natural light that Letty kept finding herself drawn to the room every morning to watch the sun rising over the tress. She had eaten breakfast in said room every morning since returning to the ton two weeks prior, wanting to get ahead on the dresses for Pen for the season, as she had told Letty about her father's debts and the family's inability to order new gowns for the season.
Letty had made all of her own gowns and dresses for the season, not wanting to face Madame Delacroix any time soon. Letty had met with two other modistes over the summer, having learned much from the both of them. She had continued putting her lessons to use whilst making her own clothes, making disguises to help deliver Lady Whistledown society paper's whenever Pen would need her assistance, the both of them knowing Eloise would cling to them through the season, making it more difficult for Pen to sneak away. As Letty had no proper guardian this season, she was free to do as she pleased without a mother keeping too watchful an eye on her.
'Is this how Lady Danbury feels?' Letty wondered to herself, smiling at the freedom that she felt.
Her father had given Letty her dowry for her birthday during the off season, telling her to spend it as she saw fit. She had simply hidden the money in her office, using a small portion of it for her lessons with the two modistes. She still oversaw all of her father's finances, which was why he'd given her the dowry. It was a payment for taking over his role, him sending more money every month as a continued payment, almost as if she were on a payroll. She was head of the family until her father were to pass and she'd be forced to give the role to her eldest brother, whom she still was refusing to speak to, causing him to stop writing her rather quickly.
Letty oversaw preparations for the afternoon tea after that. She dismissed the idea of flowers immediately, knowing her nose could not handle it two days in a row. A few chocolates were bought in town and kept separate from what cook was preparing for the tea, being sure that it did not touch anything that Letty would end up eating.
Treats, finger sandwiches, and different types of tea were set out. Letty smiled as she tried a bit of blackberry jam, almost moaning at how delicious it was. The décor was rather simple, white tablecloths with silver tea cups lined up and waiting, an extra two laid out in case the Sharmas were to make an appearance, having not yet responded to the invitation she'd sent out. She had asked Donny to see if he could dig up any information on them while he was delivering the invitations and he'd been able to tell Letty that the Sharmas were from India. She'd sent Cornelia into town first thing in the morning to find jasmine tea and the ingredients cook needed for a rice pudding she'd had when she was a child.
The rice pudding, Phirni she was told, was separated in small bowls the same size as the tea cups. It was topped a green nut and rose petals, the smell causing Letty to smile and debate stealing a small bowl before the guests arrived. The jasmine tea was set beside that, the petals still swirling around the pot a bit as steam escaped the pot.
Guests began arriving before Letty could look over anything else, Eloise coming into the new room first.
"Oh, Letty. It's so bright," Eloise gasped, doing a slow turn in the center of the room.
"It's my most favorite room," Letty told her as more young ladies entered the room, their hand maids standing to the side, Elsie speaking to them quietly before allowing Cornelia to lead them to a separate room where they could take the afternoon off.
It was twenty minutes before all of the ladies had arrived and Letty had just told everyone they were welcome to the snack table when Kate and Edwina walked in.
"Miss Sharma. Miss Sharma," Letty smiled to the two. "I was so hoping you would make it. I worried that my invitations reached you too late."
"Lady Danbury made sure to tell us that attending your tea was a must," Kate stated, a forced smile on her face.
"Well, I am happy that she did," Letty smiled. "Please, call me Letitia while you are in my home."
"Then you must call me Edwina," the youngest Sharma smiled brightly.
"Edwina it is," Letty smiled. "Come. Join us. We were just about to begin."
Letty led Edwina to the snack table, Kate following closely behind.
"How are you finding London thus far, Edwina?" Letty asked curiously.
"It is quite beautiful," Edwina smiled.
"Do you miss home?"
"Terribly so," Edwina nodded, seeming sad.
"I asked my cook to prepare something for the two of you specifically. I do hope he prepared it correctly," Letty explained, stopping in front of the Phirni.
"Oh," Edwina gasped, a sparkle in her eyes. "Kate, look! Phirni and jasmine tea!"
"Make your selves comfortable. Try anything you like. If either of these options are not up to snuff, inform me so that I may do better next attempt," Letty smiled, leaving the Sharmas to speak with a few of her other guests.
Once everyone was seated, small plates in their laps and tea in front of them, Letty smiled.
"You may all speak freely here," Letty told them. "I sent your maids to another room for the afternoon."
Baited breathes were released from multiple ladies before they began speaking excitedly to one another. Letty simply smiled, watching as the women all became comfortable, getting to know one another better in the freedom of the space Letty provided. Edwina was speaking with two other debutantes but Kate was off to the side, sipping her tea slowly.
"Eloise, come with me," Letty smirked, pulling Eloise by the hand towards Kate. "Miss Kate Sharma, this is my friend, Miss Eloise Bridgerton."
"The one that does not wish to marry?" Kate questioned.
"The very one," Letty nodded. "I leave the two of you to get better acquainted."
Letty walked around the room, checking on her guest and having Cordelia and Elsie keep up with tea for everyone, the two somehow remembering which ladies preferred black tea over sweetened without any troubles. She smiled her approval to them as she continued, listening in to the gossip around her, Anthony seeming to be a main topic. Good. She was holding this tea to help him find a wife after all. With the queen having not named a diamond as of yet, it was up to Letty to find someone suitable for him.
She took quite a few ladies off of her mental list as she listened in, most of the women only wanting the safety of the Bridgerton title, not realizing the responsibility that would come with the title.
"Miss Everly?" Miss Eaton called out. "Surely you or Miss Bridgerton know what Viscount Bridgerton is searching for."
"I assure you I do not meddle in my brother's affairs. He has not spoken to me about who he is searching for," Eloise stated, forcing the attention to Letty.
"I do know what Anthony is searching for," Letty admitted.
"Tell us!" Miss Evans demanded. "My conversation with him went terribly."
"I am sure Viscount Bridgerton's standards are quite too high for a wife," Kate spoke up, causing everyone to glance between Letty and Kate a few times. "What?"
"You are searching for a husband for your sister, correct?" Letty asked her, her face having hardened upon hearing Kate trying to make a slight against Anthony.
"I am," Kate nodded, her face seeming severe as she spoke.
"I am guessing that she will not accept a man that you do not approve of?"
"That is correct," Edwina spoke up but Letty and Kate continued staring at one another, the other ladies watching them carefully as Eloise went to Letty's side.
"Let me assure you then that Anthony will not chose a wife that I or his siblings do not approve of. His standards may be high but I assure you that mine are higher," Letty spoke clearly, brow raised in challenge.
"And why would your opinion be held at such high regards to the Viscount?" Kate questioned, seeming confused.
"You are new to the ton, so allow me to enlighten you. I may not be related to the Bridgertons by blood or name, but I am related by heart and soul. When my mother passed halfway through my first season last year, the Bridgertons were the ones to care for me, especially, and I mean no offense El as you were helping Pen after the death of her father, Anthony and Violet Bridgerton," Letty explained.
"No offense taken," Eloise gave Letty's hand a gentle squeeze.
"I have always been close to the Bridgerton family and will defend any one of them," Letty explained to Kate.
"Including Benedict?" she heard Miss Patridge whisper to two other ladies, causing them to giggle.
"Including Benedict," Letty directed at them before looking to Kate again. "You stubbed the Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton last night at the Danbury ball. I will not hold that against you, as you seemed rather upset. You make sly comments about the Viscount Bridgerton in my home and I will excuse you because I believe you were unaware of our friendship. I do not excuse behavior a third time."
"Of course," Kate nodded, seeming a bit distressed.
"Wonderful," Letty gave a soft smile. "Let us continue enjoying ourselves then."
Quiet conversations began again, everyone slowly going back to their conversations as Letty released Eloise back to the ladies she'd been speaking to just before the topic of Anthony had been brought up. Letty walked around the room slowly, smiling softly and being sure that no one was distressed after her outburst. Letty finally made her way over to the Sharma sisters.
"Miss Everly, I must apologize for my earlier comment and my behavior towards Lady Bridgerton last night," Kate began.
"Call me Letitia," Letty reminded her with a kind smile. "You do not owe me an apology. You may want to apologize to Lady Bridgerton, though. She will surely forgive you on the spot. She has a very kind heart."
"Of course," Kate nodded. "And call me Kate."
"Kate it is," Letty smiled softly. "Tell me more about yourselves. I have heard things around the ton but I try to stay out of the bad gossip."
"Well, our Appa passed away eight years ago," Edwina stated.
"Appa?" Letty asked curiously.
"Our father," Kate answered. "Lady Mary, Edwina's mother, raised us together after his death."
"I am sorry for your loss," Letty nodded.
"And us yours," Edwina offered.
"Thank you," Letty gave a soft smile.
"We grew up in India but I knew the best place for Edwina to find a husband would be here, in London," Kate explained, looking at her sister fondly. "I want to find the best match for her. Someone kind and family minded. Someone who will care for her in a way that I cannot."
"I understand," Letty nodded. "It is important to find the one that your heart and soul will belong to."
"You say it as if you have been in love before," Edwina stated, looking at Letty curiously.
"I was close to it once," Letty admitted.
"Why did the lady ask you if you would defend Benedict Bridgerton?" Kate questioned. "Are you not fond of one of the Bridgertons?"
"I am fond of all of the Bridgertons. Benedict and I had a bit of a tiff last year. We are fine now. The rest of the ton just has not seen us interacting as we once did," Letty explained. "I'm sure all will be well and the whispers will cease soon."
"Did the Lady Whistledown write about it?" Edwina asked, seeming excited.
"She did," Letty sighed. "I see you are a fan?"
"She is so… I don't know," Edwina sighed.
"Much?" Letty smirked.
"Yes," Edwina nodded.
"I have copies of last year's papers if you would like to borrow them?" Letty offered. "It may help you catch up with the happenings of the ton."
"I would be delighted," Edwina gasped.
"I will collect them before you leave," Letty promised before seeing Elsie waving her over. "Excuse me."
Letty went to her office, reading over the document that Donny had needed urgently attended to. She chewed her lip slightly as she went over it, finding everything in order and signing away, sending the five shillings along with the document. Donny nodded and left, carrying everything with him. Letty sighed, fighting the urge to rub her eyes before going back to her tea.
At the end, Letty handed a small box to Edwina containing the society papers for her to borrow. She bid everyone a good day as they left, all smiling and laughing, thanking Letty for the afternoon. Their maids seemed much more calm after having the entirety of the afternoon off as well. Letty gave her own maids the rest of the day off, eating on the leftover sandwiches and sweets for dinner so cook could have a break as well. She savored the Phirni once she finally got to it, thrilled that the Sharmas had both expressed that it was to their liking.
In her office, Letty went over statements and more business proceedings, signing her father's name perfectly after having done it so many times now. She went to her room, changing into her night dress and falling asleep rather quickly, the full day having worn her down a bit. She went to Pen first thing in the morning, the sun not having risen yet, to tell her of her confrontation with Kate Sharma before going home again, thankful that the ton was not yet awake.
Formed under pressure, desired by many, yet possessed only by a fortunate few, there is nothing on earth quite so envied as a diamond. Might our queen finally extinguish the fevered speculation and bestow the highest of honors to a most fortunate young lady tonight?
With so many futures at risk, I do suspect this author is not the only one waiting with bated breath.
Letty was dressed in a soft pink gown, the color she preferred on herself outside of lilac. It had darker pink embellishments and Letty was excited to show it off. Violet had gasped, smiling brightly when she set eyes on Letty when she'd arrived at the queen's ball just behind them, before being distracted by Eloise's constant complaints.
"Anyone here you've not yet rejected?" Benedict asked Anthony as Letty approached them, neither having seen her yet.
"You're the artist. Do you see anyone remotely inspiring?" Anthony questioned just before Letty cleared her throat, making her presence known.
"Letty," Benedict whispered, staring at her with wide eyes.
"Something inspiring indeed," Anthony smiled gently before looking to Benedict again. "We shall have our diamond tonight, and I shall have a wife."
"Lady Bridgerton. Miss Bridgerton," the queen greeted the women in front of Letty, Benedict, and Anthony. "Such a shame your presentation at court was so rudely interrupted. I nearly forgot you were making your debut this season. After your eldest sister's triumph, perhaps good fortune might run in the family."
"Uh, it is a delightful ball, Your Majesty. Very diamond-y," Eloise stated before leaning forward a bit. "Though, I must admit, I am more of an emerald person myself."
The queen just stared at Eloise, causing her to take a small step back as nerves took over again. The queen laughed suddenly and Letty smirked.
"Oh, dear! My favorite necklace is one of emeralds. How thoughtful of you to know that," the queen smiled. "It seems you have indeed come a long way since last year, Miss Bridgerton."
Eloise let out a hesitant chuckle before being dismissed and rushing off to find Penelope. Letty moved forward next, Anthony staying by her side as Benedict stood back.
"Miss Everly," the queen smiled as Letty curtsied and Anthony bowed. "And Mister Bridgerton. Are the two of you courting?"
"No, Your Majesty," Letty shook her head.
"A shame your first season was cut short. I wish you would have come to me to be presented again. You would very well be my diamond this year had you been," the queen stated.
"I appreciate the sentiment, Your Majesty," Letty gave a gentle smile. "I shall take it as the highest compliment."
"Maybe you still very well may be," the queen said, looking over Letty with a critical eye. "I do hope you enjoy yourself tonight."
"Thank you," Letty nodded before stepping away, Anthony and Benedict following behind her.
"If the queen, in fact, names Eloise the diamond, whom will you marry then, Brother?" Benedict smirked.
"She could name Letty," Anthony shot back and Letty had to hold in her snort of laughter from the glare Benedict sent Anthony's way.
"Miss Everly," Lord Fife appeared in front of her. "I was wondering if I could have a dance with you tonight?"
"Of course," Letty nodded, holding her wrist out.
Benedict looked away and Letty felt a smirk spread across her face. Anthony held in a laugh at the scene but said nothing, entertained by the events happening before him. After signing for a dance, Fife bowed his head slightly before stepping away. Letty looked to Anthony.
"No," he shook his head.
"What do you mean?" Benedict asked curiously.
"Letty was wondering if she should waste her time getting to know Fife or not," Anthony explained as he looked out among the ladies. "What of her?"
"No," Letty shook her head. "She will leave your children in the care of maids all day and night. What of Lord Cho?"
"No. He goes in and out of brothels far too often," Anthony shook his head.
"Some may say the same about you," Letty offered, giving Anthony a pointed look.
"I have given up the brothels," Anthony informed her. "I do listen when you speak."
"Could have fooled me," Letty smirked, looking around the room to see Eloise dragging Penelope away and causing Letty to groan.
"What?" Benedict questioned.
"I love Eloise, but I don't think that she realizes that Penelope is actually looking for a husband. Eloise keeps dragging Pen out of every ball," Letty explained, pointing to where the two were disappearing.
"Should we go save Penelope?" Benedict questioned.
"No," Letty shook her head. "She'll tell Eloise eventually."
Letty knew she'd have to pay close attention at the ball that night so Penelope would have something to write about it. Hopefully they would return before the diamond was chosen. The music began and Fife appeared, leading Letty to the dance floor while Anthony and Benedict both looked for dance partners. At the end of the dance, the queen raised her voice, demanding the attention of everyone in the room.
"Your presence is noted, and your queen most appreciative. Allow it to now be my honor to present to you the season's diamond," the queen called out and Letty hid behind Anthony, causing him to bite his lip to hold in a laugh at her antics as the queen took a long look around the room, as if searching for someone specific. "Miss Edwina Sharma."
Anthony was on the move almost immediately, heading towards Edwina quickly.
"Oh, her sister hates him," Letty groaned out before standing straight and smiling widely. "Oh, it'll be so much fun to watch."
Letty watched as Edwina and Anthony danced, Anthony seeming pleased as he questioned Edwina. Edwina seemed to be keeping her composure rather well, taking his questions in stride and smiling so sweetly that Letty was sure it was genuine. Anthony led Edwina from the floor and towards Lady Danbury, Kate glaring at Anthony as he reached them. Kate led Edwina away from Anthony, whispering urgently to her as she went.
Anthony seemed rather annoyed, glaring at the floor and turning his hand into a fist for a moment before softening as he spoke to his mother. He turned, making his way back to Letty, offering his arm for a dance.
"So, was Miss Edwina to your liking?" Letty asked as they danced.
"She is who I will marry," Anthony nodded.
"Have you already asked her?" Letty asked in confusion. "At least whoo the poor girl first, Anthony."
"Whatever do you mean?"
"I mean call on her tomorrow as a suitor should. Take her flowers, pretty ones, and get to know her," Letty sighed. "It's as if you have no clue how courting works."
"I managed Daphne just fine last year," Anthony argued.
"Daphne managed herself and you continued efforts to get in her way," Letty corrected. "Honestly. Lord Berbrooke, Anthony? Really?"
"You know too much," Anthony grumbled.
"I couldn't agree more," Letty held in her laugh, a small smile gracing her face. "Now, what are you to do to impress the young Miss Sharma? You'll need to put forth quite the effort to impress her sister as well. Why does she dislike you so?"
"She may have overheard me speaking with a few of the other lords about what I was looking for in a wife," Anthony stated, refusing to make eye contact with Letty.
"And were you blunt and rude during your explanation?"
"I may have been."
"What am I going to do with you?"
Color, clarity, carat, cut. At long last, the queen has named her most precious stone. While this author finds Miss Edwina Sharma to be an exceptional young lady, it is about time I used these pages of record for something else.
A shift. Is the entire practice of naming a diamond not... well, rather ridiculous? Should a woman not be value for so much more than her dancing skills or her comportment? Should we not value a woman instead for her candor, her character, her true accomplishments? Perhaps if the queen abandoned this absurdity that is the diamond, we would all see that a woman can be so much more.
