A/N #1: I was glad to get feedback for the last chapter so I'll start my thank yous for that! Smallhill (There are indeed more chapters to come for this story!) and
Mb (Really glad that you thought the first half of the chapter was a nice update. And I was really pleased seeing you liked seeing how things were progressing between Fox and Harrington, I wondered what readers would think of that so it was great to see yours! I wasn't surprised you thought it was nice hearing more about Fox and the tiers along with it affecting her previous relationship. I had to laugh at you talking about how it went from a possible clue to them being hit by the car close to the station. You're welcome for the first half of the chapter! Also glad that you though the second half was great and informative. And I wasn't surprised you mentioned the killer was distracting them with the false confession. Not surprised either you mentioned the security company was not totally secure, lol. And I expected you to mention that Skye was getting more information here. I wasn't surprised to see your question about Skye sensing the car accident, and in a way she did. You're welcome for the second half of the chapter!).
Thanks for the reviews, I loved reading them and appreciate the time taken to write them out and send them my way!
A/N #2: The title of this chapter is a lyric from the song I'm in Love with My Car written by Roger Taylor, from the Queen album A Night at the Opera.
When I'm Cruising In Overdrive
"Alright, thank you," Brad said before he hung up the phone.
"He can't bring the key?" Castle asked him.
"Not where he is, and not in time to find the two," Brad replied. "Though he said he's on his way." He then turned his attention to Skye and asked, "Anything you can help me with?"
"I'm not the law," the investigator said. She wasn't surprised when the chief's brow immediately furrowed and she told him, "You can go to the museum. There may be someone in distress there."
"You want me to lie like that?" Brad immediately said.
"No, but in case you'd need to…" Skye replied.
"I'll try Fox again," Brad said with a sigh before he was picking his desk phone back up.
"Chief," Emerson said, rushing up to the door. "Dispatch just heard from Bernier, he found Fox's car about ten blocks down the street. It's been PIT-ed."
"We're going now," Brad said as he jumped up from his seat. Making sure his phone was set he jogged out with the others to the parking lot. Entering his car he said to Darnley, "You're armed?"
"I am," the carpenter said.
"I don't know if you should be going," Beckett told Skye while her husband was driving them away from the station.
"Like I could honestly stop," the investigator said.
"Are they with you right now?" Castle asked her, focusing on the windshield.
"No, they're still at the museum," Skye said firmly before she could see flashing lights ahead of them. "They want to be," she added absently before Castle was slowing down.
"Are there any witnesses?" Brad asked Bernier since the sidewalk was blocked off with tape.
"No, they said the two cars were together and then the van that hit Fox's sped off after a minute," the officer explained.
"Van?" Brad asked. At Bernier's nod he asked, "Security cameras?"
Before the officer could say anything, Beckett turned to Brad when his phone made a noise and she asked, "The footage?"
"I called it in sir," Bernier replied.
"Good call," Brad said though he was speaking absently while he was hurrying to get his phone out of his pocket. "It is," he told the others before he started walking to his car. When he'd sat down in the driver's seat of his cruiser he was relieved the others had followed him before he connected to the laptop. Hearing the doors open he said, "Are you all going to be able to see?"
"We will," Beckett assured him, sitting in the backseat with her husband and Skye on either side of her.
"Luckily you have a view on this side," Castle said since the camera had been on the passenger side of the car. Several seconds after the video had started, Fox's car appeared at the intersection before the van was seen at the bottom of the screen.
The collision was brief, and the officer's car was turned around and Fox could just be seen before the side of the van flew open and a man stepped out with a gun. The occupants of the car, Mary leaning in to see as well, looked on while Fox left the car with her gun drawn before the man was holding Harrington hostage and the officer was forced to toss aside her firearm.
"Damnit," Brad breathed when Fox was then walking towards the van, the man throwing Harrington in. After his officer was shoved in by their killer and the van was driving off he said, "I need to find out-"
"No you don't," Skye interrupted him. She wasn't surprised when the others were looking at her and she said, "Eileen just came to me, she said Castle and Beckett will know."
Glancing at her husband when the others were turning to them, Beckett said, "Play the part where the man steps out."
Watching the footage again, Castle tensed seeing the distinctive limp of the figure before he looked at his wife and said at the same time as her, "I know who the killer is."
"Get over there you stupid bitch," the man yelled, shoving Harrington to the desk. "Sit down and sign the paper."
"No," the woman said, trying to keep her voice as steady as possible though it was difficult since the man had his gun trained on her.
"Wait," Fox said, hurrying over and standing in front of her girlfriend. When she heard her whimper briefly behind her she shook herself and told the man, "The jewelry, you've been looking for that too haven't you? If you get the deed you still don't own the jewelry."
"Oh I will, she's going to sign them over to me too," the man snarled. "If she knows what's good for her she will." He pushed Fox out of the way and said to Harrington, "Now!" When she shook her head he started to pull his arm back to strike her when he found it was being held. Turning to the officer he tried to hit her but Harrington was jumping on him before he yelled in frustration, pushing her back to the desk before he turned his attention to Fox.
Doing her best to pull the man's arm behind his back, Fox couldn't manage it since he was fully focused on her. She ducked out of the way of his arm and pulled away before he could hit her though it made her stagger against the opposite wall of the office. Quickly recovering from the slight shock of that, she turned to the desk, running over to it as the killer was speaking harshly to her girlfriend.
"If you don't sign now I will have no problem putting a bullet in you… several of them," the man said. "I did it already to your precious friends." Growling in anger when the woman spat in his face he reached for her but shortly after found himself in a headlock from behind.
Trying to pull the man back, Fox was soon wrestling with the man, going after his gun while he was keeping it away from her. She was just able to hold the end of the weapon before the killer rammed his elbow back into her. She hadn't been ready for it and she collapsed to the ground, gasping for air before she was screaming as the man was forcing her up by pulling her hair.
"Sign those papers now!" the killer yelled to Harrington who had moved over to them. Holding the gun under Fox's chin he said, "I'll blow her brains out."
"Mia… don't," Fox managed to say, wheezing a little.
"Shut up!" the killer commanded, shaking her. He then moved to slam Fox down on the desk in front of Harrington and said, "I thought you were just protecting her." Looking between the two women as they were looking at one another his lip curled in disgust and said, "You're a disgrace to the Hamptons. A member of the dozen with someone beneath us? And a queer too?"
"Let her go," Harrington said, pulling on his arm and managing to get him off balance enough to let go of Fox. She was falling as well, screaming when the killer seemed to recover quickly and was laying on top of her.
"You will sign-" the man started to say before he was suddenly gurgling. Though he had to struggle he managed to reach back to Fox and knocked her off of him, getting her hands off his neck. Coughing he stood up and pointed the gun between the two women before he told them, "No more messing around. Get up and sign those papers!"
Though she wanted to tell her girlfriend to not give in, Fox watched as Harrington stood before she was taking a deep breath. She was confused for a moment, before the woman was speaking and flooring her by giving in to their kidnapper.
"Please, I shouldn't have said no," Harrington replied. "And you're right, we shouldn't have the jewels… but why the museum? I mean I'll give it to you but… why?"
"It doesn't matter, sign the papers," the killer said angrily.
"I can tell you where the brooch is," Harrington said.
"Mia-" Fox started to say with a frown before the killer was pointing his gun at her.
"No, don't, she doesn't understand," Harrington pleaded. "But I can take you to it, right now."
"Where is it?" the killer asked.
"Why the cars," Harrington immediately responded.
"Because it belongs to my family! That Phantom was part of the Sessions family for years," he said. Seeing the startled looks on the women's face he said angrily, "I'm a Sessions, my mother's family but I am a Sessions."
"Your father-" Harrington began before the killer was cutting her off with a yell.
"I tried to change my name, but it wasn't accepted," the killer hissed. "It may say Glazer but I'm a Sessions." Turning to Harrington he said, "Where's the brooch?"
"This way," the woman replied, looking at her girlfriend before she was about to step towards the doorway. Gasping when Glazer grabbed her arm tightly she said, "I can't run, you-"
"Once those papers are signed you're going to learn your place," the man told her, smirking when the fear immediately appeared on her face. "Probably for you too," he shot to Fox. "Get over here and walk in front of me with your whore," he told the officer.
"What are you doing?" Fox risked saying once they were walking out of Mr. Vernon's office at the museum.
"I have to try," Harrington said when there was no response from their kidnapper before he was speaking angrily to her.
"Where are we going? You know I've been through this place repeatedly," he nearly growled
"They must have known," Harrington couldn't help saying. "They just brought it here."
"Why don't you have it?" Glazer asked suspiciously.
"Because I found Bernard's book," Harrington said, lying outright but hoping the killer wouldn't figure that out.
"His book?" Glazer said, frowning.
"Yes," Harrington said, seeing the doors to the room for the cars from the fifties ahead of them. "It said they needed to hide all three, the brooch was here since it was the one Eileen liked the most."
"She didn't see it until yesterday since it was with some boxes at the station," Fox said, she and Harrington looking at each other. She gave the briefest of nods to her girlfriend and they were turning back to the room they were approaching. Grabbing the right door, she said, "Now!" before she and Harrington threw the doors open and threw themselves inside the room and to the sides, falling to the ground.
"Drop your weapon Glazer!" Brad yelled, standing in the room with Beckett, Darnley and Bernier; their guns drawn and pointed at the man.
Glaring at them, Glazer lowered his gun to the floor and stood up again with his hands up. When the other officer walked up to him and put his hands behind his back he spat out to Harrington, "This museum should have been mine too, you don't deserve an inch of it."
Shaking her head she replied, "You don't care about it, you just wanted the property."
"Of course I did," Glazer said angrily. "Your precious Bernard got an offer for the land… a developer. He could have been worth nearly a billion. I should be with my car in my family again. I'm a Sessions damnit!" He then tried to break away from Bernier yelling at the woman, "You're worthless you q-"
"That's enough Glazer!" Brad said while he got in the man's face. "If you want this kidnapping to count as a hate crime I'll be happy to do that. If not then shut the hell up." When the killer stared past him he said to his officer, "Get him to the station." After Bernier was gone with the man he turned to Fox and Harrington and asked, "Are you alright?"
"I am," Fox said when her girlfriend was immediately looking to her. "We had to keep him busy."
"How did you know we were here?" Darnley asked.
"I saw you out of the window in the office," Harrington said. "Where he had us to sign a deed… I don't know if it was real."
"Wait, I want to call an ambulance," Brad said. "Just to check the two of you out." He was a little surprised when the two women were vehement about him not doing that and he said, "Fine, but if you feel you need medical help…"
"We'll tell you sir," Fox said, taking the tissue Castle was giving her and wiping the blood she could feel on her face.
"Wait, what are you doing here?" Brad asked his friend, startled at seeing him since he had instructed the writer to stay with the McDouglas women outside.
"I have something for Ms. Harrington," Skye said, walking into the room behind him.
"Mia is fine," she said. "Something?" Harrington then asked.
"Yes," Skye replied, holding out the brooch. She was a little startled when the woman sobbed once before she burst into tears and she stepped back when Fox placed her hand on the woman's arm.
As soon as she had done that, the officer was a little panicked when Harrington was turning and hugging her tightly before she responded. Though her boss was there in the room with them she hoped she was right in the guess that her protection detail was over. "It's finished," Fox then told her girlfriend. "And you're safe."
"I know I just…" Harrington said, pulling back. "Oh," she said, recalling then who was in the room. She stepped back and apologized to her girlfriend before she was turning to Skye. "Thank you. But how did you find it? Where did you find it?" she asked.
"It was in a Packard," Skye said.
"The grey one?" Harrington asked. At the investigator's nod she said, "That was Eileen's favorite."
"That's why she put it there," Skye said. "And since we're here… would you like to help me help them pass on?"
"Yes," Harrington answered immediately before she was turning her attention to Brad.
"Go ahead," the chief said quickly. "We'll take a look at the office."
Smiling slightly at Harrington when her boss asked her to go with them, Fox turned her attention to walking with the others as Skye and Mary stayed before Beckett was speaking to her quietly.
"You're not in trouble you know," she said.
"How are you so sure, you're not the chief," Fox replied.
"Believe me, I know Brad and you're not," Beckett told her reassuringly.
Though she wanted to protest, Fox merely nodded and said, "I had no idea what she was doing," since they were walking into the office. "She told Glazer that she knew where the brooch was. And she led us to that room."
"Luckily we knew there was a non-alarmed door there," Brad said.
"Thank Skye, she figured it out," Castle said, watching the officer turn to look behind them.
"Do you think she'll be able to help them?" Fox asked.
"She's done it before," Darnley said, Brad speaking quickly after before anyone could add more.
"Tell us what exactly happened, starting from when you left your apartment," the chief said.
Nodding, Fox began to explain everything since they'd left her home, startled to realize that it had barely been forty-five minutes since then. She hoped Harrington would be alright but focused her attention on relating her story.
