Chapter 12
Mount Justice
October 1, 18:13 EDT
"Ma'am," ALICE voice echoed. Marina's eyes did not stray from Kaldur and Robin. They set up their sparring match.
"What is it, ALICE?"
"I am afraid I had no luck with finding any cross references for Wotan's spell," the AI answered. Marina sighed. The exhale drowned out from the sound of Captain Marvel's chewing.
"It must be some form of ancient dialect," Marina mumbled to ALICE. "Filter through any studies relating to that. Expand it to African made research done within the last fifteen years." Kaldur and Robin shook hands before the Cave's computer counted down for the match to begin.
She mauled over her parameters briefly. Captain Marvel unwrapped another snack. "Zatara! Over here!"
Marina glanced over to their new den mother. The Leaguer rounded the Cave's wall, making sure to avoid the sparring Kaldur and Robin. An idea lit up Marina's mind.
"Actually, ALICE, keep that task on the backburner." She examined Zatara as he made his way over to stand beside Captain Marvel. Zatara crossed his arms over his chest while he watched Kaldur and Robin spar. The Computer displayed points of their blocks and dodges.
"Zatara," Marina began. His green eyes slid over to her from the training boys. A dark brow raised. "I'm sure you know my current situation and what got me here in the first place."
Zatara narrowed his eyes slightly. "I am… aware of it. Yes."
"I may require–"
"Before you continue that statement," Zatara placed two fingers on his temple. He closed his eyes. "I feel a strange– ancient magic at work. Excuse us."
Zatara gestured Captain Marvel aside. Marina blinked in surprise before walking over to Kaldur and Robin, who ended their spar. The lights below their feet died down as she saddled beside them. She peeked over at the two Leaguers muttering to one another quietly.
She did not bring it up to her teammates. Instead, she followed their gaze. It landed on the grinning Conner and M'gann as they entered the chamber.
"You know that they're a couple right?" Robin successfully distracted Marina from her thoughts. Kaldur smiled.
"I believe I knew before they did."
Marina snorted, "At least, you don't live with them. I walked in on them making out twice." Robin snickered. Marina elbowed him.
At the sound of more footsteps, the three turned around. Wally and Artemis approached. Robin smirked, "Do we tell them?"
"It is not our place," Kaldur replied.
Marina teasingly frowned at Robin. "Sad you're not part of a dynamic– sorry– romantic duo? Don't worry, you'll find someone!"
She skirted around his lunge easily. Robin playfully snarled while Marina laughed. Kaldur shook his head, his lips moved as if to say something but they did not hear what he said.
They returned to their original spots beside Kaldur when Wally and Artemis reached them. The speedster scowled, "So if Zatara's our babysitter of the week, ugh, why's he still here?" Wally pointed to Captain Marvel. "And why is he eating my snacks?"
A ZetaTube whirred to life at the other end of the Cave. "Recognized: Batman-Zero-Two." The Team straightened when Batman stepped through. His cape billowed behind him as he strode quickly across the room.
"Computer," he announced gravely. "National news." The hologram displayed the live feed. Cat Grant's distressed face greeted the Team.
"The initial attack was short lived," she reported. The video cut to a gigantic moving plant that used its branches to crush a building. Debris fell around the streets. "But Metropolis was only granted a short reprieve."
Another footage showed the Justice League in action. "And despite the intervention of Superman and the Justice League, there seems to be no end in sight."
"Should we get out there?" Robin asked. The Team anxiously shifted, awaiting Batman's orders. Batman turned to face them.
"No. The League will soon have the situation under control. That's not why I'm here." A hologram display opened a blue window beside Batman's head. A picture of Sportsmaster appeared. Batman continued, "According to your intel, Sportsmaster supplied Cadmus' Blockbuster formula to Kobra."
"Who combined it with Bane's venom to create Kobra Venom," Wally finished. Marina's brows furrowed. Though she was not as versed in chemistry nor within the field of manufactured drugs, ALICE broke down the components of Kobra Venom and its consequences such as their recent run ins.
"Which the Brain used to create his animal army," Robin continued. Superboy stroked his animal companion's chin, "and upgrade Wolf."
"The Brain also used inhibitor collars like the ones at Belle Reve Penitentiary," M'gann chimed in.
Artemis frowned, "Batman, is it possible that plant thingy's on Kobra Venom too?"
"I had Green Lantern run a spot analysis." Batman typed on the holographic keyboard. "The vine's cellulose does contain trace amounts of a Kobra Venom variant."
A diagram of the cell's structure projected for the Team to see. Marina whipped out her phone. She took a picture. "ALICE–"
"Got it," the AI replied. "Working on it now."
"These cannot be coincidences," Kaldur pointed out. "Unrelated criminals are cooperating with one another worldwide." Robin opened his own holographic keyboard while ALICE fed Marina a report on the Kobra Venom. She was glad that she read Dr. Banner's notes– well, the simplified versions.
"Batman's right. It is a variant of Kobra Venom but made to adjust according to the plant's growth." She recalled the rapid growth of the branches. "Seeing how the vines grew and crushed the buildings I guess that's why. But, this formula isn't something one mind can create."
"Exactly. It's now clear our enemies have formed some kind of secret society of supervillains." Batman scowl set deeper, "The attack on Metropolis is only the beginning."
"You got that right," Robin's hands flew across the keyboard. "Plant creatures have sprouted in Gotham City, Paris, Star City, Taipei–"
Before the Boy Wonder could continue, static crossed on the display screens. "Dude," Wally said.
"It's not me. Someone's cutting into the satellite signal. All satellite signals."
"Ma'am," ALICE interjected. Marina cupped her ear to hear over the static. "I cannot track the interference but someone is intersecting all signals through a firewall."
"Can you try to break through it?"
"I am redirected every 0.1 seconds," ALICE replied as Joker's face appeared. He knocked on the screen.
"Ladies and gentlemen," he greeted the world. "We interrupt your regularly scheduled mayhem to bring you this important announcement."
"Ma'am, this firewall does not seem like one at all," ALICE piped up. Disbelief in her voice. "Despite full priority and multiple safeguards–"
Joker flipped open a knife before angling the camera to the villains that stood beyond the camera.
"It's almost like–"
"From the Injustice League," Joker cackled. Marina wanted to share in the laughter. The title of their little squad– not so original. The camera zoomed in to Count Vertigo but Marina froze. Her focus narrowed on the sorcerer on the far left.
Marina finished for the AI, "Magic."
"We are responsible for the attacks on your cities," the Count began. "If you wish to save them, a ransom of ten billion American dollars is required."
The villains smirked, "Delivery instructions have been sent to the United Nations. There is no time limit, but the longer your governments wait–"
Joker faced the camera back to himself, "The more we get to have our jollies." The feedback reverted back to static.
Batman pressed a finger to his comm, "Roger that, Aquaman. The UN will prepare the ransom as a fallback. But it'll not come to that."
In a flurry, Robin's fingers danced across the keys. He played the video back. "Count Vertigo, the Joker, Poison Ivy, Ultra-Humanite, Atomic Skull, Black Adam–"
"Wotan," Marina finished. Her words came out as a hiss.
Robin's fingers tapped against the keyboard. "Seven heavy hitters. Probably behind nearly everything and everyone we've faced."
Wally nodded to the display, "There's your secret society."
"Not so secret anymore," Artemis retorted. She folded her arms.
Kaldur thought aloud, "Perhaps, after India, they realized we would deduce the truth and saw no point in hiding any longer."
Pumped, Wally created a fist. "Yeah? That was their mistake." He punched his palm with excitement. "Right now, I say we go kick some plant-creature butt."
Marina studied the face of the Injustice League. A tiny part of her told her otherwise. It gave her a nagging feeling but she shrugged it off.
"The Justice League will handle the plants. I have a different job for this Team," Batman examined the young heroes with his mask casting a shadow over his face. Wally's expression dropped. He sighed his disappointment at what the member of the League announced.
Artemis landed a hit on the speedster. Wally rubbed where it hurt. Batman continued, "With the plants attacking so many locations simultaneously, there must be a central control system. Your mission is to destroy it."
Zatara stepped forward. Fatherly concern etched on his features. "You realize what you're really asking them to do?"
"They're ready."
"Ready? Ready for what?" Wally interjected, oblivious to the Bat's assignment. Artemis punched him again. "Ow! Will you cut that–?"
"Hello, Wally!" Artemis exclaimed in exasperation. She gestured to the hologram of villains. "If the big guns are fighting plants, who do you think we'll be fighting?"
Marina sighed. Wally frowned at her, "I don't know. I guess we'll–" Artemis pointed at the villains.
The pieces of information finally clicked in Wally's mind. "Oh."
"Well, Batman, I trust you're correct," Zatara said. Marina bit her bottom lip. Her hands fidgeted in anticipation.
"I trust you can locate the enemy."
"Indeed," Zatara nodded. "Wotan's involvement suggests sorcery is part of how the plants are controlled. Robin, if you would provide a holo-map."
With a couple clicks, Robin pulled up a holographic globe. Zatara continued, "I'll search for signs of concentrated sorcerous activity." Marina perked up at this. She stored it away, deciding to ask about it later. They needed to focus on the task at hand. Zatara stepped up to the holo-map. He lifted his hand and chanted unfamiliar words.
A red dot appeared on the globe. "There," the Leaguer announced. "That is where you will find the Injustice League's central control system."
"Coordinates locked in," Robin relayed. "The Louisiana Bayou."
"We are on our way," Kaldur confirmed. Upon hearing their leader give his go signal, the Team sprang into action.
When they approached the airspace of Bayou Batholomew, Marina double checked her latest invention. Wally peeled his banana. He glanced curiously at her hands, "What have you got there?"
Marina did not gaze up from her hands. "These are repulsors. They work both as explosives or as palm gauntlets that shoot beams that are operated by ALICE. I haven't decided which function fits it better."
Wally whistles, "Amazing, babe. Have I told you that your intelligence just adds to your beauty." He took a bite of his snack.
Artemis grumbles to Marina's side. The younger girl rolled her eyes at Kid Flash. Miss Martian announced, "We're right above Bayou Bartholomew."
Bayou Bartholomew
Oct 1, 18:53 EDT
Silence cloaked the Team. Robin brought out his batarangs to examine them while Artemis studied her arrows. Something caught the eye of Kid Flash. He turned to Aqualad after swallowing, "What's in the duffle?"
"Plan B." Wally gulped before finishing off his banana. M'gann groaned in pain.
Superboy looked over at the martian, "You all right?"
"Dizzy."
The Team watched Miss Martian wearily.
"Martians get airsick?" Robin asked.
Kid Flash weighed in, "She does look a bit greener than usual."
"Not me, her," Miss Martian clarified.
"I feel fine," Artemis pressed a hand on her chest.
Marina anxiously eyed M'gann, "Maybe, someone should take over driving the Bio Ship?"
Her claustrophobia rose. Though she felt better every time she rode in the aircraft, the lingering fear of being stuck in a limited space remained. Now that the pilot's health was questioned, it made Marina feel sick as well.
"Not her," M'gann said, looking at Artemis. "The Bio Ship. She's trying to shield us but–"
The Bio Ship dipped but straightened. Marina gripped on to her seat. "M'gann–" she asked cautiously. Before she exhaled a sigh of relief when the Bio Ship steadied, Marina shrieked.
The Ship rotated and rolled. She jerked against her seatbelt. Marina groaned when they halted. "Gods, I hated that. I feel like throwing up."
"No time!" Robin exclaimed.
Miss Martian yelped as she gripped her head. A face popped up from a hole in the side of the Bio Ship. "He's hurting her," Miss Martian declared. Without missing a beat, Superboy leapt out of the Ship, punching the assailant.
Water gushed into the gaping hole of the Bio Ship. Marina quickly placed a breathing tube in her mouth. "No. No way, I'm nearly drowning three missions in a row," Artemis announced. She took a breathing tube for herself and Wally.
Marina dove into the water. ALICE lit up a bright path for her to follow. "Out," Aqualad instructed through their telepathic link. "Everyone out!"
They swam through the hole, weaving through large vines. When the Team broke through the water's surface, they huddled around as they watched the Bio Ship sink. Marina tucked the breathing tube into her belt.
"She's in shock," Miss Martian told them. "She'll need time to recover."
"Well, we're not leaving anyway until I beat some answers out of Wotan," Marina said. A chuckle erupted from their side.
"You sound rather sure of that." The sentence came before the Team's screams. Marina whirled around while her friends dropped to the ground. Wally mustered enough strength to sneer.
"Vertigo."
The blonde man sneered down at Kid Flash, "Count Vertigo to you, peasant." Marina threw knives at him. The Count hid. Superboy's own attack was parried by Black Adam. They flew to another clearing.
At the split second opening Marina provided, Kaldur drew water from his bearers and directed it to the Count. The wave washed Count Vertigo away.
"Robin, Miss Martian, Lethe, disappear." Kaldur ordered on their link. "We will keep them busy. You three fulfill the mission objective." Marina vanished into the bayou.
She tossed her wet braid over her shoulder. Marina's shoes pressed against the soft ground. She made sure that their tracks are covered behind them by having M'gann use her telekinesis to sweep a branch over their footsteps.
"I've lost contact with Aqualad and the others. Should we–" Miss Martian began.
Robin replied, "Sorry, that's not the gig. This is." They pulled aside some vines to reveal a building with a giant plant. "The Injustice League's central control system."
Marina tapped her earpiece. ALICE spoke to her. "It seems like the giant plant sticking out of the building acts like some sort of an antenna."
Marina relayed the information to Miss Martian and Robin in the telepathic link, "It could control how the vines grew and crushed the buildings."
"And could be how it controls the other plants worldwide," Robin continued.
"Well hello," a voice spoke behind them. Vines wrapped around them. Marina grunted when the plants gripped around her body tightly. She squirmed to no avail. She saw Poison Ivy smirk as the giant guerilla pointed a gun at them. "And goodbye."
Miss Martian's eyes lit green. The gun automatically shot at the roots. Free, Lethe and Robin ran into the bayou. They skirted and dodged Ivy's vines. "Sorry, children. I'm putting an end to your little reconnaissance mission."
"Lethe, head towards the plant!" Robin directed in their telepathic link before M'gann went too far. They separated as a root cut through. Marina rolled away.
"No," Marina replied. "I am not leaving you!"
"The mission–"
"- will continue when we're done with this," Marina pulled the repulsors to her palms. Robin pulled himself to his knees.
Pointed roots hurled toward him at both sides. Marina covered one side. Beams erupted from the repulsors. They sliced the vines. She twirled around, about to shield Robin from the incoming plants but they were torn apart by an invisible force.
"Robin, Lethe, she's made contact," Miss Martian said telepathically.
"Artemis?"
"No."
"The mission," Marina reminded them. Robin nodded his head. He gave his plan. While the Team distracted the rest of the Injustice Team on the ground, Miss Martian brought them to the plant antenna.
Marina and Robin showed the batarangs and extra repulsor bombs that Miss Martian needed to attach to the plant. The bombs detonated. The plant fell over the building with fire and smoke billowing up into the bayou sky. Tendrils of vines slumped over the building.
Lethe, Miss Martian, and Robin stood on top of the roof, safe from the fire and explosion. Robin crossed his arms. "Timber."
Poison Ivy screamed in fury as she commanded roots to attack them. Miss Martian levitated before telekinetically destroying the plants. She yelped when Atomic Skull shot her with a beam.
"Children?" Joker shouted from behind Atomic Skull. "Children foiled our plan?"
Robin quickly pulled Lethe away from another one. They hid behind a fallen vine. Lethe looked over the plant before holding out her repulsor. She took a shot. The beam caught Atomic Skull in the shoulder. It jerked the villain back and sent him flying down the side of the central control of the Injustice League.
"Hurry," Lethe told Robin. "I bought us enough time to join the others without Atomic Skull taking another crack at us."
They quickly went down the building. Robin helped M'gann up. Lethe shot her repulsor beam at Atomic before pushing Robin and Miss Martian along. Amidst the chaos, Marina noticed Wotan.
She shot a beam at him as Robin threw batarangs. Wotan summoned an orange shield around himself. "Enough," he declared.
Out of his hands, lightning erupted bright blue. It struck Marina right in the chest. She crumpled into a ball with a loud shriek.
"Ma'am, the repulsors are fried!" ALICE said in her ear. Her earpiece remained intact because of Tony's paranoia of going against any one in the Avengers including Thor.
The shock brought flashes of past memories into the forefront of her mind. "Ah, she's perfect for the project."
"Increase the training."
"Not enough!"
"One more test for the Forgotten One."
She writhed in pain that she passed out for a moment. Marina did not assess when the electricity stopped or when Wally cried out, "Aqualad, don't!"
She finally came to, when a great reverberating voice said, "Wotan, you are mine." Artemis pulled her up.
"Lethe, you okay?"
She tried to shrug it off, "I'm fine. Help Wally. I got Atomic Skull." Artemis hesitated for a second before walking off toward the speedster. Lethe shook off her flashbacks. She ripped off the short circuited repulsors.
"I'm here," she muttered to ground herself. She found Atomic Skull running up to her. She readied herself, whipping out a knife. "I'm here."
Lethe dodged Atomic Skull's beam. She launched her own knives. She wove through the trees, ducking when fragments of bark flew from the beams. Lethe landed a punch. Atomic Skull jolted his head back.
Lethe created distance between themselves again. She yelped when a beam got too close for comfort. A red laser landed by Atomic Skull's feet causing the villain to fall back. Lethe sighed in relief when she saw the Justice League arrive.
Lethe stepped by Robin as they surrounded the Injustice League. He smiled at her as his mentor spoke. "It's over."
Slowly, the Injustice League raised their hands. Count Vertigo drawled, "There will be another day."
"Another day?" Joker sputtered. "Another day?! There won't be another day! Not for any of us!"
In his hands, the Joker's cybernetic controls reboot another time. He moved his fingers causing roots to jut out from the bayou's waters. Joker spores released from the plants.
"Joker venom spores!" Batman warned. "Don't breathe!" He punched the manically laughing man.
"Fear not!" Dr. Fate rose above the gas. He created an ankh with his magic. It sucked all the gas with a radiant hum. "Fate has intervened."
As the Justice League shackled the Injustice League, Marina approached Wotan. Disgust roiled in her stomach. Wotan's red eyes danced with amusement when he saw her.
"Oh, you're not taking him until I ask some questions," Marina said to Batman. A permanent frown etched on his face but he did not say a word. She turned to the sorcerer.
"You," she spat out. "I have no idea why you brought me here. But I want to know how." She grabbed his clothes. Beside Batman, Superman and a member of the Green Lantern Corps stepped forward in alarm.
Marina felt frustration well up inside her. Desperation clawed its way up her chest, scratching the walls of her throat. "How do you send me back home, you shit." She tightened her grip around the neckline. "Answer me."
Laughter bubbled at his chest. It sprung from his mouth. Wotan's eyes lit up with joy before narrowing. He smiled, "Your chaos has yet to be order."
Marina's hand slowly loosened. She swirled around, willing her tears away. Sensing that Marina cannot elicit anything other than the cryptic answer, Batman tossed the villain to the Green Lantern Leaguer. "Take him away."
Marina pondered on Wotan's reply at the edge of the circle. She along with the Team was all that remained in the Louisiana Bayou. The Justice League left to incarcerate the Injustice League.
She half heard Wally freak out about Kaldur donning the helmet of Fate. Internally, Marina felt what Wally expressed. Some of the Team snuck worried glances at her way but she could not reassure them. All she felt was… Panic, mourning, despair about being trapped. She stared out, barely processing that Kaldur was released by Fate.
Kaldur wandered closer to her. Marina gave him a small smile. "I'm glad Fate let you free."
Kaldur studied her features once, "My friend, I wish I can say the same for you." Marina's face fell a fraction. He placed a hand on her shoulder. "Kent told me that magic can only be corrected by itself. However, the science will be found at the right time. Do not lose hope."
His words rekindled some degree of it. Marina nodded. Batman interjected. "We're done here. The supervillain's secret society has been neutralized. As for your performance, it was satisfactory."
Marina felt the weight on her shoulders lighten further. The Team exchanged smiles, even Lethe.
Mount Justice
October 2, 19:56 EDT
Marina twirled her pencil in between her fingers. She listened to M'gann hum a tune. The martian's finger gingerly brushed through her hair.
"Remind me again why you need to practice braiding?" Marina asked, remaining still. M'gann interwove the locks together.
"I can't always rely on my shapeshifting now that I'm going to school. And the Bumblebees thought someone needed to learn how for the team," M'gann replied. She leaned forward. "And who better to teach me than you?"
Artemis peered up from her book. She sprawled out on the couch opposite from them. A sharp brow raised at the young girl sitting on the floor, "And who knew that you would be such a patient teacher?"
Marina tossed her pencil at Artemis at the tease. The archer caught it with ease as she and M'gann laughed. The corners of Marina's lips tugged upwards, "I'll have you know that teaching and braiding is one of my many talents. Thank you very much."
"I don't doubt it, beautiful," Wally interjected. He stared lovingly at Marina and M'gann. "Man, this is heaven."
The girls turned their attention to the speedster– one in exasperation, another in disgust, and the last in amusement.
"I forgot you were here," Marina said flatly. Wally cradled his chest dramatically.
"You wound me, babe."
Artemis spat, "Don't you have some homework to do."
"Hey! I'm doing it right now!" He gestured to his paper, which was not even half completed.
"How is the arm, Wally?" M'gann asked as she shifted Marina's hair to the other side.
"Nice for you to ask, Sugar!" Wally's smile was so wide that Marina felt her cheeks hurt for him. "Since you showed that you care."
Artemis rolled her eyes before returning to her book. Marina picked up another pencil that laid on the table.
M'gann politely smiled and continued to braid Marina's hair. Footsteps drew closer to the Cave's lounge. Zatara appeared by the room's doorway. The teens looked at this week's den mother.
"Ah, Marina, there you are," Zatara said with his Italian accent. Marina raised a brow. He glanced at the three other members of the Team and hesitated. She waved a hand.
"Whatever you're going to say, you can say it in front of them." Marina watched Artemis and Wally snap their gaze at her in surprise. She pointed a pencil at them. "Trust is a two way street, remember?"
Zatara sighed. "Very well," He cleared his throat. M'gann's fingers slipped from Marina's hair. "Dr. Fate's words yesterday got me thinking. The magic that brought you here may be the answer to your predicament."
His words made Marina draw in a breath. She looked at him. Seriousness cloaked his eyes. He continued, "The only issue is to understand what kind of magic. Then it struck me. The ancient magic that I sensed when I first met you. I believe I can try to examine you now for it."
Marina stood. "And then you can send me back?"
"Wait, wait, wait," Wally interrupted. "Are you saying that all this time the League could've just done this?"
Zatara shook his head, "It is not that simple. This sort of magic is ancient– not easily detectable."
Artemis nodded her head, "Last time, in Kent's Tower, Clarion mentioned that he couldn't find his "toy" because of the Tower but maybe it was because of the magic all along?"
Zatara looked shocked. He cupped his chin in thought. Marina's heart sank a degree. "I did not know that. It changes some things." He thought about it. "This is a theory but this form of magic may stem from chaos."
A knowing burned in Marina's chest. M'gann placed a comforting hand on Marina's shoulder. "But we can still try, right?"
Zatara studied Marina for a moment before smiling reassuringly. "Yes, we can try. No matter what, my dear, we will find a way for you to go home." Marina's eyes tinged. She jerked a nod.
Zatara stepped closer to Marina. He placed a hand on her head. He spoke an incantation. The whispered words reached her ears as she closed her eyes. She waited until Zatara exhaled. He pulled away.
"It is indeed an old power that keeps you here." Marina opened her eyes. A flash of disappointment crossed his face. "But it is beyond my own capabilities to undo. I am sorry."
Marina stave off the fracture that impeded her heart. She shrugged it off. "I had a feeling."
Zatara gripped her shoulder. "Do not fret. We will work together to find a solution. Wotan will not win."
The name sparked an idea. Marina remembered his ritual. "Zatara, I obtained a copy of Wotan's spell. He mentioned someone– Net– Neith. Do you know anything?"
Recognition lit up the Leaguer's eyes. "She is an ancient Egyptian god."
Marina nodded, "Yes but I cannot translate the rest of the spell."
Zatara shook his head, "Often none can. Spells from the ancient world are impossible to translate because they do not hold meaning verbatim but symbols to their patron."
Wally mumbled to Artemis about his disbelief. She hissed her frustration back at him. Marina chewed her lip in thought. "I just need a signal– anything- from my universe." She held Zatara's eyes. "Can you help me?"
"I will do my best."
