Chapter 6: A Desperate Move

A few days have passed since then. Zazu hung his head low as he leaned against the ribcage of his new prison. "Zazu! Sing me something." Scar said getting comfortable on a rock nearby. Zazu gave him a subtle glare but stopped and thought about it for a moment before singing the first thing that came to mind.

"It's a world of laughter, a world of tears..."

"NO! Try something less..." Scar stopped to think for a second. "Cheery..." he said at last.

Zazu stopped and then snapped his fingers. "Feed the birds..."

"NO!" Scar snapped irritably. "Too depressing!"

Zazu thought for a second "Well Alibaba had them 40 thieves..."

"Absolutely NOT!" Scar said a bit more angrily.

Zazu stopped to think for a minute then snapped his fingers again. He had the perfect song in mind "I admit that in the past I've been a nasty..."

"Ah... now we're talking!" Scar said delightfully, his mood going up.

Meanwhile on the outskirts of the Pridelands... Sarabi was standing before the Pride with a serious look on her face. Sarafina was off to the side watching over the cubs with tears in her eyes. Sarabi had called this meeting in secret so as not to arouse suspicion.

Despite (or maybe it was because of) her history with Scar, she felt this place was no longer a safe place to raise the children. The hyenas only helped to drive that point even harder.

"Diku! Dwala! Naanda! I need you to take the cubs and get out of here!" She said with the up most authority. "It's not safe here anymore!"

The three sisters looked at her surprised but nodded in agreement. Those hyenas have only been around a week or so and were already causing a lot of trouble. It's better they take the children somewhere safe.

Diku suddenly spoke up "What about you? Are you sure you'll be alright!" She said with concern in her voice. She could try and talk her sister into joining them, but deep down she knew that wasn't an option.

Sarabi smiled kindly. "I'll be fine!" She said reassuringly.

"What about Scar?! Won't he be suspicious when he notices the cubs are missing?" Dwala asked stepping up. Scar was arrogant but not stupid. Surely he would notice that the Pride was now minus a few members.

"Let me deal with him!" Sarabi said assuredly. "Knowing him, he probably won't even notice they're gone!" He never actually bothered to interact with them anyway. He always seemed to be off doing his own thing even before the children were born, and even then the only cub whom he ever really talked to was Simba.

The three sisters nodded in understanding and turned to the children. The cubs all looked back with tears in their eyes knowing this might be the last time they would ever see the Pride ever again. Sarabi walked up to the cubs, a grand total of seven (counting Nala) and leaned forward. "I know we're asking a lot of you, but we need you to be strong!" She said as tears came to her eyes. "Can you do that for me?!" The cubs all nodded letting their tears flow freely.

"Are you ready children?" Asked Naanda kindly.

The cubs all looked up at them shakily and nodded. The lioness' came over and gave them all one last hug as tears rolled down their eyes. With one final goodbye the trio and the cubs set off to parts unknown.

Sarabi and the rest of the Pride sat there for what felt like hours. The sun was already low in the sky and getting lower. When the sister trio and the cubs were all out of sight, barley even specks on the horizon, the remaining Pride members started to make their way back to Pride Rock. It was dark by the time they got back. A gloomy atmosphere hung over their heads.

"I'm really gonna miss them." One of them said.

"Yeah, me too." Replied Sarabi, until she suddenly stopped. That voice didn't belong to just anyone. She and the others turned their heads around quickly and spotted... "Nala! What are you doing here?! I thought you were leaving with the others?!"

"I'm NOT leaving the Pridelands!" She said looking determined.

Sarafina looked at her daughter in concern. "Nala it's not safe here!"

"I DON'T CARE!" Nala boomed, as tears began to form. The Pride looked on at her in shock. "This is my home..." Her voice was shaky. "This is where I belong!" She said letting her head hang down low.

Sarabi and Sarafina exchanged looks before looking back at her, a feeling of pride swelled up in both of them.

Sarabi came up to Scar looking determined "Scar? May we barrow Zazu for a moment?" She asked with authority.

Scar looked up at her confused "Why...?" He asked a bit suspicious. Zazu watched the exchange from the inside of his cage, as he too was curious.

"We need him to send a message." Sarabi spoke clearly.

Scar looked at her incredulously "To whom? Might I ask?" He asked narrowing his eyes.

Sarabi briefly hesitated "A Friend!" She simply stated.

Scar eyed her, looking her up and down as if he was looking for something "And if I say no...?"

"Then I'll go myself!" She said calmly, not letting herself waver. "I was just thinking it'll just take less time if I send him instead!" She said thinking quickly.

Scar seemed to think about for a moment or two "Alright...!" He said a bit hesitantly "But if he doesn't return by dawn tomorrow, I'll send Chewa and Choyo to find him and bring him back here for execution!" He stated clearly, sending a glare in Zazu's direction.

Zazu gulped not liking this.

Sarabi gave Scar an unreadable smile. "I promise he'll be back long before then!" Scar nodded still not sure what to think but moved aside all the same. Sarabi walked over and pushed the rock that kept her friend trapped aside letting him out.

Just then one of the hyenas came rushing in. "Scar! SCAR! We got a problem!" Banzai said a little out of breath.

"What is it?" Scar said boredly. Sarabi looked up in alarm. Have the hyenas learned about the cubs leaving? She stood there in worried anticipation.

Banzai breathed in and out trying to catch his breath. "There's a rogue Lioness... in the Pridelands... causing trouble!"

"A what?" Scar asked looking on in surprise.

"She and Shenzi... are currently... in a fight!" Banzai breathed.

"Show me!" Scar demanded seemingly forgetting all about Sarabi and Zazu. Banzai nodded and took off with Scar following right behind him, he stopped briefly and turned back to them. "This isn't over!" He said before taking off.

Sarabi and Zazu sighed in relief and Sarabi quickly took this opportunity to talk to Zazu and whispered into his ear.

Outside the den, Sarabi and Zazu stood under the night sky.

"Remember I'm counting on you!" She said in a low hushed voice. Zazu saluted her and took off into the night.

Sarabi smiled and made her way back inside with the others. A feeling of relief resting on her shoulders.
