Councilwoman Jean Rankin was currently on high alert and had been ever since her assassination attempt on Kelly Olsen had failed. Ever since, no matter how hard she tried to put out the rumors that she'd been involved in the shooting, Rankin knew that it was only a matter of time until her role in the attack was revealed. That was why she'd begun making plans to flee the country before they did.

Though any plans of that happening left her mind when the NCPD and the FBI came bursting through the door of her home, right in front of her teenage daughter Nikki.

"Mom, what is going on? Why are the feds here?" Nikki asked, only to be shocked when one of the agents walked up to her mom and forcibly put her in handcuffs.

"What is going on?" Rankin asked, trying desperately to play dumb.

"Jean Rankin, you're under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder and the attempted assassination of Kelly Olsen and the shooting of Alex Danvers. You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law, you have a right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you." the agent said.

"This is ridiculous." Rankin said, trying desperately to deny it.

"Mom, tell me you didn't." Nikki said in shock that her mother would stoop so low to try and kill someone.

"Of course I didn't honey. I promise this is all one big misunderstanding and I'll be home soon. You can't leave my daughter here alone." Rankin said.

"We've already contacted your ex-husband, who will meet us at the station to collect your daughter." one of the officers said, since Rankin had left her husband a few years ago and this was actually one of her visitation weekends, since in the divorce, her husband had gotten custody of Nikki while she got visitations.

"Guess it's a good thing that dad won that custody battle after all." Nikki said, since the image of her mother being arrested would likely be burned in her brain for the rest of her life and she couldn't help but note the irony of the fact that the agent who was arresting her mother was a black man, considering her views on things like that.

At the same time this was happening, Kelly was bringing Alex home from the hospital, though she could tell that her fiance was still depressed over the fact that while the procedures she'd had did increase her likelihood of being able to walk again, she was still stuck in a wheelchair for the time being, which meant that she was stuck on desk duty at work. Something Kelly knew was getting in Alex's head, since ever since Kara had arrived on Earth and maybe even before then, Alex had been a protector, a woman of action. She didn't know how to still be that while stuck in a wheelchair.

"Alex, remember, this is only temporary. You start rehab soon and Lena has her scientists working around the clock to find a way to help you walk again. You've spent your whole life taking care of others, so I think that maybe you should enjoy letting other people take care of you for a while." Kelly said, trying to find a bright side to this.

"I just don't know how." Alex said and Kelly smiled as she hugged her fiance.

"We'll figure it out. Now come on, we need to get inside, since we're keeping everyone waiting." Kelly said, since Alex already knew that her sister and the rest of their team were holding a welcome home party for her in her and Kelly's apartment. Alex had to admit, she was kind of grateful that her mom was moving in, since while she didn't want to be an inconvenience to Kelly, being an inconvenience to Eliza kind of came with the territory of being her daughter.

Anyways, Alex was happy that they didn't insult her intelligence by trying to turn the party into a surprise one when Kelly pushed her chair through the door and the first one to come up to greet her was Krypto, who came running up to her, barking happily that Alex was home.

"Be careful with her Krypto, she's still recovering." Kara called as Krypto gently walked up to Alex and licked her hand.

"Thanks boy. You know I'll be borrowing him as a support animal right." Alex asked.

"He's at your disposal. Just because I won't let Jordan borrow him, doesn't mean you can't." Kara said.

"Speaking of which, where is Clark's family?" Alex asked, since she, Kelly, Kara, Krypto, Eliza, Lena, J'onn, Astra, Brainy and Nia were at the party.

"They sent their regrets, but they needed to get back to Smallville since the boys have school tomorrow." Kara said.

"Plus, Jordan's currently grounded indefinitely." Lena added, since Jordan had finally pushed his luck too far.

"Yeah, he's in a mood and Clark and Lois were worried that even without his powers, he might accidentally make your condition worse." Kara said, right as her phone buzzed and she smiled when she saw the text she'd just received.

"What was that about?" Kelly asked, seeing then look on her future sister-in-law's face.

"That was a text from my friend at NCPD. Rankin was just arrested for the shooting and they've got enough evidence against her that means that she has no choice but to plead guilty." Kara said.

"Then I guess we should also celebrate Kelly becoming mayor, since she's now running unopposed." Nia said.

"Let's not jinx it yet. But I will be testifying at Rankin's trial and pushing for her to spend the rest of her life in prison." Kelly said.

"Considering the fact that she was responsible for an assassination attempt on the director of a major government organization. She's going away for a long, long time." J'onn said.

"And even if she doesn't for some reason, her career is over, since there's no way she could make any kind of comeback after this." Kara said.

"Then I guess that just gives us even more reasons to celebrate." Alex said, grateful that some good came from her being shot, since it meant that Rankin was finally going down and Kelly's road to becoming the mayor of National City just became that much easier.
