Yuya sighed as he looked out the window from the passenger seat of the smart car he was in with discontented ruby eyes. The driver hadn't been too particularly keen on conversation, and none of Yuya's usual attempts at entertaining hadn't managed to break the ice. He had given up a few hours ago, and there had been dead silence in the car for the last three hundred or so miles.
Why was Yuya in a smart car with a not-so-friendly driver? Well, he had lost his parents and home in a fire three years ago. The tomato-haired boy had been having a sleepover at a friend's house at the time, so he hadn't been harmed by the fire. At least not physically. But he'd been stuck in foster care ever since.
Until three weeks ago, when he'd learned that he'd lost another relative. This one was a distant relative that the fourteen-year-old had never known even existed. But apparently the relative knew of him, and had left him a mansion to live in, a little over 350 miles from the prefecture Yuya had been raised in. The relative had given specific instructions in their will that Yuya should move to the mansion, where there were relatives to raise and care for him.
So now Yuya was being taken to the mansion by an Uber that had been paid for with a trust fund from the will that had been set aside specifically for this purpose. Unfortunately, the driver didn't seem to be too happy about a young teenager in his car. He'd given Yuya the silent treatment from the moment the boy had entered the car, only speaking to snap at him whenever he unbuckled his seatbelt to adjust it.
Which was a lot more often than Yuya cared for. The seatbelt of the passenger seat kept locking and choking Yuya a little, digging into the soft and delicate skin of his neck, so the boy kept unbuckling it to fix it. He didn't normally unbuckle his seatbelt in a moving car, but in this one he really had no choice. It was choking him again now, so Yuya unbuckled it to fix it yet again.
"Put your seatbelt back on!" the driver snapped almost immediately. Yuya sighed. He wished there had been a different Uber available, but Japan didn't really have very many Uber options.
He was about to put his seatbelt back on, when he saw something out the windshield that made him gasp and forget all about the seatbelt. "Is that it?!" he asked, in complete awe of what he was seeing.
There, just ahead of the car, was a glorious mansion. It had three stories and was in a traditional Japanese style. There was a stone garden, a hot spring, and a pagoda visible on the property.
The driver growled, annoyed that the young teen hadn't put his seatbelt back on. At least the drive was almost over. The mansion was the boy's destination, and they were almost there.
As the car pulled onto the estate, there came the sound of tires screeching up ahead. Before Yuya or his driver could react, a car drove around a corner at top speed heading straight for the estate entrance. Unfortunately, the smart car was in the way. There was barely enough time to even blink beforeā¦
CRASH!
