It's absolutely wild to me that I've now been writing fanfiction for ten whole years. I definitely didn't think when I started my journey as a stupid teenager back in 2014 that I'd still be at it today, or that I would come as far as I have as a writer and as a person. In those ten years, many things have happened to and around me, and I've done my best, especially more recently, to use those experiences and circumstances to improve my writing so I can make stories myself and more people can better enjoy.
I really can't thank everyone who's been with me for this long ride enough. You could have jumped off the train at any time you wanted – hell, I honestly expected a lot of people to – and yet there are quite a few of you who've stayed on with me as a writer, some even since my early days where my writing was just objectively bad. It really means a lot, and I hope, if nothing else, you'll continue to enjoy my stories going forward.
I know I'm not good with schedules, which is why I haven't used them in a long time – instead I just give rough estimates for when I think I might have a chapter done, and then adjust them accordingly if something comes up or I need to deal with IRL stuff for a while. And while that style of uploading might bother more than a few people, I've already made the decision to stick to it because it lets me take the time to create a more polished end product, both for my own satisfaction and your enjoyment.
In celebration of my tenth anniversary as a fanfiction writer, not only do you guys get this new story which I'll be periodically working on in between my other more serious stories (this story is going to be a bit more lighthearted), but I've also created a Discord server where I now host all of my content! Some of you might be very surprised to learn that fanfiction isn't the only type of content I make anymore – I'm now also a Roblox game developer, and I do anime tier lists on the side. I also occasionally livestream games like Rocket League, Clone Hero, and others into Discord and on Twitch, and I'm even thinking of eventually doing full anime and manga reviews.
For those of you who are interested, you can join the server with this invite code: vHqbNJ599K. In the server you can sign up for pings that let you know whenever I update a story, publish a new version of one of my games (I only have one right now), update my tier lists, or start a live stream. You can also provide feedback for anything I do if that's your speed! I've also been debating opening a or Discord server subscription service for those of you who want to support what I do, even if there probably aren't many of you who fall into that category – you can let me know if that's something you'd be interested in doing.
I hope to see some of you guys there, and here's to hopefully another ten years of writing!
Unison General Hospital, 295th Floor, Unison City – four centuries after the Fourth Great Ninja War
I cough heavily as I feel the drugs run through my system, slowly preparing my body for my eventual burial as the closest people I know stand at the side of my bed. None of them shed tears now, and I can't blame them, seeing as how I didn't want them to show weakness. That will surely change the moment I pass on; I've been an unshakable figure to pretty much the entire world for longer than most people even remember.
Kami, the original archives of my birth and my parents had all been destroyed, even the many benefits of chakra unable to indefinitely stall the ravages of time. All that had remained of those simpler times were digital photocopies stored, like much of our civilization's critical knowledge, in the Time Bunker almost two kilometers beneath Skywatch Spire, the seals I had helped design with the expertise I'd gained helping secure them against everything, even the eventual end of our world.
Looking at those relatives, my rapidly failing memory struggles to even recall who they are, other than the one at the far end – Akino Hyūga, a fifteenth-generation descendant of my long-departed wife and the current head of not just the Hyūga Clan, but also of worldwide research and development. He had gained immense renown in the First Outer War after he'd single-handedly driven off a lesser member of the Ōtsutsuki Clan and become the first Hyūga in three hundred years–only the second Hyūga in history and the third shinobi ever–to awaken the Tenseigan in the bargain.
Incidentally, he was also a leading medical expert with the use of his all-seeing eyes, which is why he's the one who appears to be the least affected of the four people in the room, the one closest to my bed being someone I vaguely recall as a distant descendant of my best friend, though their name and familial separation already permanently eludes me. Akino steps forward, moving the others in the room away from the bed as I feel my mind grow foggier. He kneels next to the bed and addresses me gently. "I'd like to thank you one final time for everything you've done for not just us, but the world at large in the very long life you've lived. We shall all strive to maintain the peace you helped bring us and continue to protect our world from the threats that lie beyond."
I chuckle, and instantly regret it as it becomes a hacking cough that wracks my entire body. "Thank you, Akino… I hope everyone stays… stays strong for the times ahead… The world will be more vulnerable… than it has been… in a very long time. I'm sorry that… I can't be there to help… guide you all like I've done."
Akino gravely nods. "Of course, my lord. You've done more than enough. And while everyone will dearly miss you, it's time we proved we can hold our own against the other races in the galaxy when they come to assail our world without needing you to rescue us from the worst of them. I just hope you will be properly rewarded for the efforts you've given the shinobi world at your own expense."
I lightly shake my head, feeling my muscle control beginning to slip away as well. "Nonsense… I chose to serve… of my own volition. I wouldn't change… anything I've done… even if I may hold some regrets… about how things turned out." Akino and I both know what he's referring to, that being the tragic loss of Old Kumogakure's legacy after the Thirty-Ninth Raikage and her entire village were annihilated in the opening assault of the First Outer War fifteen years ago. I hadn't fought in almost twenty years before that incident forced me to come out of retirement and personally lead the world's forces to a mostly pyrrhic victory against the modern extraterrestrial threats poised to ruin our entire civilization.
I cough more heavily, now unable to feel my arms or legs. "You've… done extremely well… in rallying everyone against… the threats to come… As my last act… I declare before these… witnesses… Hyūga Akino… shall henceforth be… Twelfth Kage… I trust all our… people… to you…" I stopped speaking, the rest of my body beginning to lock up and my oxygen supply drawing very short.
Akino sheds a solitary tear despite his emotional control. "I thank you for your kind words. And I swear upon your dying breath, I shall not fail our world. I will become a leader the people can rely on in honor of your, and Old Konoha's, legacy. May Kami bestow Her divine blessings upon your eternal soul for all you've done."
I smile lightly as my eyelids force themselves shut, and I hear Akino utter one final phrase as the rest of my body fails me and the heart monitor sounds its infamous continuous droning beep. "Goodbye, Naruto-sama… Time of death, nine-seventeen P.M…"
I am Naruto Uzumaki, and after living longer than any human in recorded history, I'm now dead.
I open my eyes slowly, confused. Okay, I'm certain I'm dead, my heart stopped and Kurama's not around to bail me out like he used to. I raise my hand upward to see if I can see anything, but the darkness persists. So a realm where no light exists. Even using a jutsu to see by wouldn't work, the energy would either be immediately snuffed out by entropy or would fail to work at all.
Luckily for me, I needn't trouble myself with worrying much longer, as a dark visage appears in front of me, quickly taking form to reveal the Shinigami in all its haunted glory. The signature robes, tinged blood-red with black trim, frayed and spiked at the edges, and the dagger the deity grasps tightly in its mouth, are completely unmistakable, even if Father hadn't told me so long ago what the Shinigami looks like. I immediately bow my head in recognition of his presence. "Shinigami-sama."
"Naruto Uzumaki… I must say, it is a pleasure to finally see you in the realm of death. You must understand how… tiresome it is to see people constantly evade death for their own selfish and misguided reasons. To see you, a human who never once used the time he has been given for selfish acts, willingly face death when you could have potentially existed for time immemorial, is quite refreshing."
I gently raise my head, making sure to avoid any actions that might offend the Death God of our world. "I simply believed it was time for me to pass down the legacy of what we'd all built. As much as I'd like to continue serving as I have, we've both lived–in your case, existed–long enough to know that with all I've done and how long I spent there, that eventually people would have grown resentful. They would have thought they wouldn't be able to stand on their own two feet and would have plunged the world back into chaos. For everyone to continue growing and walking down the path I laid down for them, I had to let someone else take responsibility."
"Indeed. Greed and wrath are easily manipulated and twisted aspects of your human condition, and in time wars would once again have seen your kind turn to carve out one another's throats. And while it does not concern me to see your species so readily condemn itself to extinction, I must admit my realm has… enjoyed a bit more traffic, as it were, thanks to your actions. Your world has grown far more populous than you'd probably dared to imagine as a child.
"However, that is not why we are here, in Purgatory. I am here to take your soul and ferry it to its next destination… at least, I would be under normal circumstances."
Normal circumstances? Before I can ponder that thought, another figure appears before me – this one wears a flowing green and white yukata, with an off-white belt holding it closed, and earrings that look like the gem in the necklace Tsunade had given me all those decades ago. His long, flowing silver hair extends down to mid-back and seems to flow in a nonexistent breeze not unlike Kaguya's, and his emerald eyes, accentuated by locks of his hair that fall gently in front of them, exude a grand power and authority I've not seen since the end of the Outer War, when I'd perilously faced down Shinji Ōtsutsuki to keep our world from being destroyed.
The man smiles and whispers words to the Shinigami in a language that sounds like it requires multiple tongues to even pronounce, and after a moment of silence, the Shinigami turns back to me. "Farewell, Naruto Uzumaki. Do not waste this opportunity you have received…"
Before I have a chance to say anything, in the next instant the Shinigami disappears – not as if leaving at great speed or teleporting, but as if reality itself dictated that he was not to be there anymore to anyone lesser. It's like one moment, he was, and the next, he wasn't. The lone man–having witnessed that, it's a safe bet he's also a deity of some kind, though I don't recognize him from any sect or religion on my former world–claps his hands together twice, and I'm forced to close my eyes as a blinding flash of light instantly overwhelms the dark realm.
A few moments later, the light dims significantly, and I hesitantly open my eyes to see that all that's left is a yellow-orange sky above and around me, and what looks like the tops of numerous exotically shaped cumulonimbus clouds if one were to view them from space. The man smiles contentedly and relaxes, before conjuring a tea set and a table out of nothing, and sits down, pouring two glasses.
"Please, help yourself. You are my guest, after all, Naruto-kun," the man speaks in a silky-smooth voice.
Realizing I had unintentionally been holding my breath the entire time–which alone set off alarm bells ringing in my head–I gulp nervously and proceed to take the proffered cup of tea. I take a sip, humming in delight upon realizing it's raspberry-flavored white tea, my favorite.
"Now, Naruto-kun, I'd like to begin our discussion by congratulating you for the life you've lived. Four hundred thirty years is by any account an impressive lifespan, even for the standards of naturally long-lived races like elves. For a human, especially a human in your world, it's unprecedented. And in that time, you've done many things for the betterment of your world. You've faced down tyrants, madmen, misguided psychopaths, and deluded powermongers alike and lived to tell the tale through all of it.
"You've never once held your own interests above the common goals you sought to achieve to improve everyone's standing, and you've achieved a peace that for many races is already very long-lasting, but for humanity especially would otherwise be impossible. You've sought to find ways to both respect and understand the true nature of the world, and of the power you've grown to master, and yet you have, through sheer force of will, never once turned that unfairly against anyone who did not deserve it. You even defeated Shinji Ōtsutsuki, pretender he was. A man so powerful by mortal standards that the gods themselves were entertaining talks of personally stepping in to put his lunacy to rest. And in single combat, no less.
"A kind father and caretaker, a fierce and firm warrior. A curious scholar and researcher, yet also an evangelist of the natural order of life. A proud example of what many races, but humanity especially, can achieve if they grow beyond their base pride and instinct and truly embrace change. Naruto-kun, you are all of these and much more. And through all of it, you've remained humble to your last."
I blush lightly, not expecting such praise to be dumped onto me, but I can't exactly refute it either. I'm not the hopelessly optimistic child I once was, I fully realize that there are some people who just can't be saved, no matter how badly I'd wish for the contrary. You didn't get to live as long as I did and not start understanding the truth of human nature. Maybe given a theoretically infinite lifespan they'd have the chance to redeem themselves and become good people again, but that's why the death sentence existed as a punishment – offenders bad enough to have deserved it simply couldn't be redeemed in a normal human lifespan. Sasuke himself would probably have suffered that fate so long ago were it not for both Kakashi-sensei and my own efforts. Though I can't really say he's an accurate example, because despite everything he had been redeemed, something which hadn't happened to anyone with crimes remotely similar to his in the four hundred thirteen years that had passed since then.
"Given your truly impressive character, strength, and deeds, I, the Wind God Fūjin, have decided you deserve a reward for your outstanding service to reality. However, I'm sure you are aware that we deities cannot simply hand out free gifts to every paragon that passes our way."
I gulp. "Of course, Fūjin-sama. What would you have me do?" Now the reaction I'd had earlier made sense. As a master of Wind Style the likes of which far exceeded what anyone could do with any other element, not even Kekkei Genkai, my own body was instinctively reacting to something it knew could end me in a femtosecond with less than no effort. You don't get to be the God of anything without being literally infinitely stronger than any mortal could reach in the same category. Fūjin could very easily have ended me without a second thought the moment he arrived in Purgatory if he didn't like the look of me, and there'd have been absolutely nothing I could have done to stop him.
Fūjin opens what looks like a massive plasma screen and snaps his fingers, and images of a planet appear, along with figures that look a lot like the demons I'd helped to eliminate from our world more than two hundred years ago. "As I see it, you have two options before you. Given your immense power and wisdom, normally a mortal such as yourself would be automatically sent to a higher realm such as what some on your world call Paradise. You would not be allowed to reincarnate because of the dangers some mortals represent when given the ability to take their experiences with them and the fact yours are so extensive."
"Right, Fūjin-sama." It didn't take a genius to figure out what he was getting at – someone with the wrong motivations could very easily use that knowledge to essentially take over the world, and someone who managed to get anywhere close to the same amount of power could instead just decide to blow the planet up for shits and giggles. But the worst outcome? Forget taking over the world, they could enslave them, force them to do inconceivable things, then develop them to the point they could go into space and go on to do the same thing to other worlds given enough time.
I could very well see someone like Orochimaru finding a way to defy physics and give himself real immortality, then within a few dozen millenia take over an entire galaxy, as well as find ways to destabilize the fabric of reality itself, something the gods would not stand for. The very thought made me shudder at the potential.
Fūjin gravely nods. "Indeed, I can see you recognize the potential cataclysm that awaits down that path. The gods may not directly interact with reality much nowadays, but we will not suffer any power-mad mortals who foolishly think they can ascend to our level of responsibility. Thus, we don't even give them the chance in the first place. That doesn't stop some from trying, but every standard example of a mortal attempting such has ended with others like you who defy conventional logic killing them anyway."
He turns back to the screen, and I focus my attention on it as well. "This is a unique circumstance. This world, Lastriel as your world would call it, is host to numerous races. The majority are peaceful and co-operative with one another, but several centuries in the past, a race from outside that universe outsmarted causality itself and travelled through the Great Void that separates the lower branches of reality from one another.
"It was out of desperation, as the race themselves were being hunted to the brink of extinction, but their violation of the natural laws has gained them much ire among the Gods of that universe, who wish to see them exterminated before they can take that world over for themselves. This has become an issue of such import in their eyes that they've taken to granting deceased mortals across their universe a chance to be reborn and a treasure of their choice to boot, in exchange for ending the threat these Demons represent to reality. They were doing this before, but it was a far rarer occurrence than it is now."
I stare at the screen for a moment before something occurs to me. "If they're such a threat, then how have multiple centuries passed without them doing exactly what the Gods of that universe are concerned about?"
Fūjin smiles lightly in amusement. "A combination of the requirements for them to bypass both their universe's barrier and that one leaving them severely weakened and most of them being killed immediately upon landing on Lastriel has left the Demons in a very perilous position, forcing them to go into hiding. The God who specifically oversaw that world did not act according to his station in ensuring the Demons were truly gone and he has already been very harshly punished for his grievous error.
"However, the Demons have only recently re-emerged within the past several decades and have slowly been spreading across Lastriel with the intent of exterminating the world and taking it for themselves. Not only that, but the greater among them have begun to rediscover the vast amounts of power their predecessors had left to them, and many of the more capable adventurers who have chosen to face them have died in vain, with only one dead General to show for the seventy years of effort."
I ponder the information I've been given for a moment. "One dead General means there's potential for them to eventually be able to handle the threat with the current method themselves. Surely something grave must have happened to justify offering me the chance to go there and stop them, and cross into another universe in the process which normally, according to your own statement previously, isn't supposed to be possible outside the most extreme of exceptional circumstances."
Fūjin actually chuckles at my inquiry, which tells me I probably pieced together some of the puzzle. "The main issue is that they are a very short time away from discovering how to truly harness that power, and once they do, no one in that universe will be able to contend with them, reborn soul or otherwise."
I instantly figure out what Fūjin is referring to with that comment. "Of course. Invasive species outperform the locals for resources and if left unchecked can drastically change or even outright destroy the local ecosystem. They're going to either overwhelm them with raw power and wipe them off the face of the planet, or they're going to bide their time, play the long game, and set up a war of attrition until they can force the other races into such a bad position that they have no other options but to join or die. In other words, the exact thing that would normally see me not even being given this opportunity in the first place."
Fūjin's smile grows even wider at my assessment of the situation. "Indeed, the reports I've heard from Shin-kun have not done your wisdom and intelligence justice. As you are more than likely aware, extreme positions are not relieved by more moderate ones, but by extreme opposite positions. With the Demons on the cusp of overthrowing the natural order and becoming that kind of extraterrestrial threat you are no doubt familiar with, the Gods there have now realized that unless they wish to dirty their own hands, they must fight fire with fire, as it were.
"Her Majesty Kami-sama heard their pleas for assistance where most of the other Gods nearby ignored them in their time of need, and bless Her divine benevolence, She chose to aid them where the others refused. She came to them with an offer – in exchange for forming a partnership with their resident Supreme Deity and gradually melding the cultures and traditions of the two universes, She would send to them Her greatest and most accomplished mortal warrior to face down the Demons upon their expiry. Once upon a time Shinji Ōtsutsuki was the perfect candidate, but he began to fancy himself a god and became the man you killed. A mistake Shin-kun has made sure he will reap the results of for all eternity."
I nod to myself. "And because I killed Shinji, and given everything I've done in my life, that automatically made me the next most qualified candidate for this mission."
Fūjin chuckles once more. "Were I the God of Gambling, I'd bet a trillion you've already resolved to undertake this task and do not so much as care about the first option."
"Of course, Fūjin-sama. Who am I to ignore those in need when I was once in their position? I wasn't given the opportunities I've had over the course of my life just to use them for my own benefit. I've always put the needs of my people before everything else, and that won't change now, even if we may be of different races or realities. And it makes sense when you boil everything down. The yard's dying because of an overgrown weed that's sucking all the nutrients out of the soil, and you don't want to pull it yourself? Hire someone else who's not afraid to get their hands dirty to take care of it, plant some new seeds, and fix up the yard in the process."
Fūjin outright laughs at my on-the-nose analysis of the brass tacks. "Ha! You're certainly not lacking in confidence, and you seem to be aware of just how closely this situation mirrors your own dealings with the Ōtsutsuki clan. And allow me to correct you on your previous statement; the moment you ended Shinji's deplorable existence, you became more qualified for this task than he.
"Well, since we've already affirmed your decision, I'll explain the rules for your mission. First, your goal is simple: exterminate the Demons and defeat the Devil King. The fewer the unneeded losses that occur at their hands and the faster you do it, the more beneficial for all parties in that universe the outcome will be."
I nod, and Fūjin continues. "You will convene with one of the Gods of that universe before you are sent to Lastriel to begin your task. Once you've received the information they have to give you, you will be sent down and begin your mission.
"Finally, the conditions for victory and failure are as follows. Victory shall be the total erasure of the Demon race from Lastriel with all world powers remaining undisturbed; or, failing that, the total erasure of the Demon race from Lastriel and the removal of their agents from any of the world powers without causing a systemic collapse of any of said powers in the exchange. Failure shall be inability to prevent the collapse of a world power in the process of your task; or accomplishing the task over a period longer than four years; or anything that exceeds the scale or timeframe outlined in either of those conditions. Do you understand your task, Naruto Uzumaki?"
I nod gravely, ready to undertake my next mission. "Yes, Fūjin-sama."
Fūjin nods. "In that case, prepare yourself. I shall send you to that universe, where you will meet with one of their Gods and learn anything they have chosen to inform only you on."
I nod and close my eyes, and everything fades away for a time.
"Hello. You must be Naruto Uzumaki," I hear a smooth and feminine voice call out to me, and I open my eyes to find myself in a void with a checkered-tile floor and a single throne, upon which sits what I can only assume is one of this world's Goddesses. Between the ice-blue hair held up in two tails by blue orbs that look like they're made of water to the thin and cool-colored dress that hugs her frame, and the cool, gentle gaze being directed, this Goddess seems to exemplify stately elegance.
I bow and kneel to her at once. "Yes, Goddess-sama. My own Gods have sent me here at the request of our Supreme Deity."
The Goddess smiles. "I see you are already ready to get your quest underway." She leans back languidly in her seat and waves her hand, and a table with a large stack of cards appears in front of me. "Normally Returners – that's the term we Gods use to call people we allow to be reborn in this world – are allowed to only take one ability or artifact with them into the new world. However, due to the nature and danger your unique mission involves compared to those we've sent to Lastriel before, we're allowing you to take two with you."
The Goddess hides a light giggle behind her hand, and I see a bit of a mischievous glint in her eyes – the same look I used to have in my early days whenever I'd executed a particularly pervasive prank to perfection. "However, this does come with a catch – the second ability won't be your choice. We're testing different ways to allow our Returners to better understand their abilities when assigning them to new worlds for missions like these, and we'll be giving you our newest prototype solution to test while you're there. You can choose your other ability from the cards on the table in front of you."
I nod and take the cards in my hand, but before I can they start floating and fanning themselves out in front of me. I hum inquisitively for a moment before quickly scanning the massive deck. I quickly spot three things that I could see being very useful, but before I decide, I turn back to the Goddess. "Goddess-sama, you said there was one ability that I would already have. Could you please explain what it is and how it works? Depending on that info my choice in my second ability may change."
After a more extensive explanation than I'd initially expected, I frown while the Goddess sits back and waits. Sounds like those RPG games Boruto played when he was a kid. My chest tightens as I remember my long-dead son, but I force myself to shrug it off and focus on the task at hand. I examine the three choices for my second ability and question which one would be most useful.

A circle of seals and runes of indiscernible nature appears around me, and I close my eyes as I feel myself being lifted into the air and transported to Lastriel.
