Isa Swan was an enigma to Sam.
Everytime he thought he had her figured out he'd feel a fleeting emotion from her that made him curious all over again.
And it was more than the imprint. The imprint just showed him the right direction to her, drew him to her side, it had his wolf checking the woods around her house (thankful it was in the truce areas of the treaty) each night.
Jared would tease him when they were patrolling together.
'You think about nothing about her. Where did our mighty Alpha go.'
'Oh don't worry I can still beat you in a race.'
Jared's wolf yipped before running off into the bush.
Then one day when they stopped by a little book shop in Forks that just opened up he noticed something odd.
They were giggling over some of the stores specialized notes for the book shelf when a familiar sickly sweet smell wafted over them.
One of the Cullens, the lone boy, was sniffing around the corner. His golden eyes seemed to narrow and darken when he saw Isa. Sam stood protectively over her, staring down the leech. Who as soon as he turned his head from Isa his gaze turned golden again and he looked at Sam with distaste before walking away shaking his head in confusion.
Isa had always smelled good. Something wild and yet cozy. Something that calmed his wolf while exciting him.
It worried him that the leech might have smelled it too, but then it was as if...he forgot Isa existed after his gaze left her.
Sam wouldn't have thought anything of it but then it happened again. As they were walking out the book shop, the pixie like Cullen and her mate stood waiting for the other and they too seemed to focus on Bella their gazes darkening before a low growl emanated from him in warning and their gazes met his immediately clearing. Walking away shaking their heads in confusion.
What was it about his little mate that had the leeches so confused and oddly disoriented?
She would always quiet in those moments, scared so very scared, and he wondered if she knew.
So when they were at her house and she was making dinner for another night in with her father he asked her.
"Why are you afraid of the Cullens?"
Nervousness and something like anticipation could be felt through the bond.
She took a deep breath and set down the knife she was using to cut up some carrots for a stew.
She wiped her hands on her apron before coming to stand before Sam.
"It's because of what they are."
Sam nodded, he couldn't say anything until she said it herself.
"Vampires, bloodsuckers, leeches. It doesn't matter that they are technically 'vegetarian'..." She put up air quotes, "They creep me out."
His eyes went wide, "How did you know?"
She sighed, "That's where things get a bit unbelievable."
"I live with the unbelievable each day, try me."
She began to pace in front of him, "I don't know where to start."
"The beginning?"
She swatted him with her kitchen towel. Before tilting her head back and whispered, "The beginning." Before she got a determined look in her eye, "If you could wish for anything, well anything that didn't involve raising the dead, changing someone's mind, irrevocably changing past events; what would you wish for?"
Sam thought and the only thing that he wished for in that moment was to know what his imprint was thinking. "I wish I knew what you are thinking."
"Really?"
He nodded his face serious.
Isa took a deep breath, "Ok I hope you don't regret it." She held her hands out to him and he slipped them into hers, "I wish Sam could see and hear my thoughts whenever I willed it."
He stared at her and she stared at him.
'Can you hear me, Sam?'
His eyes widened when he realized Isa's lips never moved.
"How?"
She went to pull her hands from his, but his hands tightened around hers.
'I am something called a Tempest. Something of myth. Essentially any of my wishes can come true.'
"How long?"
Isa sent him a series of memories from her childhood on of making wishes knowing it would tell him something about her she had yet to tell him.
"Foster homes? What about Charlie and Renee?"
Nibbling her lip, a nervous tick she rarely did. She sent the memory of finding an old mirror in an antique store. Of her mirror twin. Of not having a choice but to switch with her. Of arriving when Renee and Phil were getting married.
"So your not..."
"My birth name was always Isabella. I just didn't always have a last name until this last year."
"So what happened the first time?"
Isa led Sam to the couch before compiling a movie like purveyor of the first Bella Swan's memories.
Charlie called toward the end of it and said he'd gotten a call about a hiker being mauled again so he was in for a longer shift.
"Do you need to go?"
"So you know then?"
"I've always known."
"Why didn't..." He paused.
'We were just getting to know each other. I didn't want to overwhelm you. You already have so much on your plate already. But I never told you a lie.'
Thinking back on all their conversations he realized that was true.
"I feel like I need to start getting to know you all over again."
Sam's gut clenched seeing her sad smile.
"I'm still Isa. I just have more history than you were expecting."
Sam nodded, "I need to go for a run..."
Before he left she called out to him, "Be careful around the copper haired Cullen he can read minds."
With a nod off he went out shifting before he ever took off his shorts. His mind a whirl.
