Paralytic Drug

Characters: Scott, John, Virgil, unknown villain

Warnings: Non-Consensual drug use, medical drama, locked-in syndrome

Virgil and John stood by the bar and watched their older brother work the room. It never ceased to amaze them both how people always responded well to Scott, even those who were initially belligerent.

Tonight was no different.

This gathering wasn't a TI one, however, and they were not the only big name in aviation. Only…Scott seemed to be getting all the attention and there were some others at the bar who were being quite vocal about it.

The two brothers turned and grinned at each other. John may be slightly recognisable by name but Virgil was completely unknown to everyone here, and they were thoroughly enjoying the annoyance of everyone else.

Finally Scott made his way to the bar, asked for a double Laphroaig – 20-year-old if you please – and knocked half of it back before joining them.

'Enjoying yourselves?'

'We are, Scott. We absolutely are.'

'Thanks, Virgil. You both are all heart. You want a drink?'

'I got this, Scott.'

'Thanks, John. One more turn and we can get out of here.'

'That's the best news we've heard all night.'

The three men grinned, chinked glasses and downed them together. Scott turned to leave but stumbled a little. Virgil caught him and Scott turned to pat him on the shoulder. But the look on Scott's face stopped him short.

'Vir…V…'

And Scott was on the floor.

And Virgil was tearing his shirt and tie off.

And John was yelling at his comm.

His heart stopped less than 90 seconds later. Virgil and John took it in turns with CPR until the paramedics came and whisked Scott away.

By that time Kayo and Penny were on their way, as were Gordon, Alan and Grandma. Virgil went with Scott while John stayed to talk to the security and wait for Penny. He'd already bagged Scott's glass and he began to talk to all the bar staff until Penny took over from him and Parker rushed him over to the hospital.

It didn't take long for the whole family to gather and to be shown into the private room where Virgil was currently pacing the floor. He almost collapsed into his Grandma's hug.

'Have you had any news?'

'Not yet, Grandma. They're running bloods. They couldn't get him breathing. They…they're putting him on ventilation.'

The silence was heavy. There was something else, they all knew it.

'Virgil?'

'They can't treat him until they know what he was drugged with, but at the moment…he regained consciousness in the bus but couldn't breathe unaided. It looks…it doesn't look good.'

'Doesn't look good? How?'

'He couldn't do anything, couldn't move. Couldn't even blink. Couldn't breathe. Whatever drug they used it's completely paralysed him.'

This time the silence was much briefer before the room erupted. Nothing could be done at the moment, though, and they soon lapsed into silence.

It was less than an hour later that a nurse showed them into the private room Scott had been settled in. He was slightly reclined on a bed, a breathing tube already in place. He was still asleep from being sedated, and his stillness was unnerving.

But not as unnerving as the tube in his mouth.

It wasn't the first time that Scott had been intubated, but this was the first time it hadn't been caused by a rescue. Virgil took the seat next to him and the others spread out around the room while their Grandma went to talk to Val Casey and then the doctors.

The night passed both quickly and excruciatingly slowly. The only visitors were nurses came twice and drew bloods until Kayo slipped into the room just after dawn. Her face was pinched with worry. She gave Scott's limp hand a quick squeeze before indicating to her family that she needed to talk. They followed her out of the room and as soon as she'd made sure that there was no one around before she started explaining.

'We have a problem.'

'What? What's happened?'

'I just got a message. Well, EOS intercepted this message and forwarded it to me. EOS? Play the message please.'

'FAB, Kayo. Playing message.'

'Calling International Rescue. By now I'm sure that your esteemed Commander has ingested a certain neurotoxin that I'm sure has had devastating effects. You know what I want. I want Thunderbird One and the schematics to the other ships. You have 36 hours from the time Scott Tracy ingested the toxin before the effects become permanent. I will be in touch in five hours.'

There was a beat of silence before Gordon spoke.

'How long have we got?'

'A little over a day. Twenty-nine hours is all we have.'
