In the icy halls of the Star Sanctum, the cold bit through the air with a sharpness that only Esdeath could command. Her presence was a paradox—a chilling beauty that exuded an aura of strength and authority. She stood tall beside Hao Asakura, her gaze fixed on the expanse of the frozen landscape beyond the sanctum's massive windows. Hao's other subordinates, Kanna, Marion, and Matilda, watched from the shadows, their jealousy simmering like embers in a fireplace.
"Esdeath," Hao's voice was smooth, like silk over steel, "your control over ice is unparalleled. You truly embody the strength I seek in my followers."
Esdeath turned, her blue eyes meeting his. "Thank you, Hao-sama. It is my honor to serve you and help realize your vision of a new world."
Kanna clenched her fists. "She's always so composed," she muttered under her breath. "Always perfect."
Marion, her voodoo doll tucked safely in her pocket, sneered. "It's disgusting. She acts like she's better than us just because she's strong."
Matilda, who had been silent until now, nodded in agreement. "We've been with Hao-sama longer. We've proven ourselves. Why does she get all the attention?"
Their whispers reached Hao's ears, a subtle smirk playing on his lips. He turned to address them, his tone calm yet commanding. "Is there something you wish to say, my faithful warriors?"
The trio straightened, eyes flicking between Hao and Esdeath. Kanna was the first to speak, her voice tinged with resentment. "We've served you loyally, Hao-sama. We've been by your side through everything. Why does she get to be so close to you?"
Esdeath's gaze turned icy as she regarded the three women. "Perhaps because I've proven myself in ways you haven't," she said, her voice as cold as the ice she wielded. "Or perhaps it's because I don't waste my time with petty jealousy."
"Enough," Hao interjected, raising a hand. His tone brokered no argument. "You all have your roles to play. Esdeath's strength is a vital asset to our cause, as is each of yours. Do not let jealousy cloud your judgment."
Kanna's eyes flashed with defiance. "But Hao-sama, we've been with you longer. We deserve—"
"What you deserve is my decision," Hao cut in, his voice now edged with irritation. "Remember your place." The room fell into a tense silence, the only sound the soft hum of the sanctum's mystical energy. Esdeath watched the exchange with a detached interest, her loyalty to Hao unwavering. After a moment, Hao spoke again, his voice softer but no less authoritative. "I understand your feelings. But we are on the cusp of something monumental. Petty rivalries will only weaken us."
Marion nodded reluctantly. "Yes, Hao-sama. We understand."
Matilda sighed, her eyes cast downwards. "We're sorry, Hao-sama. It's just... difficult."
Esdeath stepped forward, her demeanor slightly softened. "I was not always favored. I had to prove myself through actions, not words. If you wish to earn Hao-sama's favor, show him your strength and loyalty."
Hao nodded in agreement. "Esdeath speaks the truth. Prove your worth through deeds, not complaints. Now, I have a task for you all. A test of your abilities."
The trio exchanged glances, curiosity piqued. "What is it, Hao-sama?" Kanna asked, her earlier anger replaced by determination.
"There is a group of shamans who oppose our cause," Hao explained. "They have been a thorn in our side for too long. I want you to eliminate them. Esdeath will lead the mission."
Kanna opened her mouth to protest, but Marion grabbed her arm, shaking her head. "We'll do it," she said. "We won't fail you, Hao-sama."
Hao's gaze was piercing as he looked at each of them. "Good. Remember, this is your chance to prove yourselves. Do not disappoint me."
As the trio turned to leave, Esdeath approached Hao, her voice low. "Are you sure they're ready for this?"
Hao smiled, a dark gleam in his eyes. "They will either rise to the occasion or fall. Either way, we will be stronger for it."
Esdeath nodded, understanding his logic. "Very well. I will ensure they succeed. Or die trying."
"Exactly," Hao said. "That's why you are my strongest. Never forget that."
Esdeath inclined her head in acknowledgment. "I won't, Hao-sama."
