Balancing a pizza box in one hand and clutching a bouquet of yellow roses in the other, Kevin walked to Gwen's front door. Since her parents were out at some party tonight, he and Gwen were going to have free reign of the house for the next few hours. Considering how chaotic their lives were, a simple stay-in date sounded like the perfect way to unwind and spend quality time together.
With his hands full, the only way Kevin could ring the doorbell was by awkwardly pressing it with his elbow. "Special delivery!" he announced.
"Coming!" Gwen shouted through the door. She opened it seconds later, greeting him with a grin which widened when she saw what he was holding. Keeping her hands behind her back, she tiptoed and gave him a peck on the lips. "Glad you could make it."
He stretched his arm out to show her the flowers. "For you, mademoiselle," he said in a half-decent attempt at a French accent.
"Aww, thanks! Can you put the pizza down first, though?" she instructed. She stepped out of the way to welcome him into the house, maintaining more distance between them than necessary. He decided not to comment on her strange behavior and did as he was told. After kicking the door closed, she walked to him, still keeping her hands behind her back.
He waved the bouquet in front of her. "Arm's gettin' tired," he joked.
"Mine too." She finally brought her hands out, revealing a small bouquet of blue orchids. "For you, monsieur." Stunned, Kevin took them from her and gave her the roses he was holding. He wasn't sure if he was more surprised at the gesture or at how beautiful and vibrant the flowers were.
"I've heard that guys don't usually get flowers, so I thought I'd break the mold," she explained. "Do you like 'em?"
He'd never expected to ever get flowers, or even want them, but looking at them now, he realized he'd been sorely mistaken. "Yeah, I mean, these are... wow."
Gwen put a hand on her chest, breathing a sigh of relief. "Part of me was worried you'd say something like," she cleared her throat, speaking her next words in an impression of Kevin. 'Flowers are for girls!'."
"Can't say I blame ya, but I know better than to turn down a gift. Thanks, by the way." He bent down to kiss her on the forehead, eliciting a satisfied hum from her. He started to think of places in his apartment to display the flowers, only to realize he was missing something important. "I should probably buy a vase, right?"
She shook her head. "I'll give you one of my mom's spares. I'm sure she wouldn't-" The disbelieving look on Kevin's face made her change her mind mid-sentence. "Oookay, point taken. I can help you pick one from the store later. We should eat before the food gets cold."
"Took the words right outta my mouth."
