The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon as Jeff Akers wrapped up his day at the Moon Lake Park visitor center. It had been a relatively uneventful day, which was a welcome change after the chaos of the past week. Just as he was about to lock up, he saw an old, familiar figure trudging up the path towards the center: Red Knott, the notoriously grumpy birdwatcher.
Red pushed open the door, his weathered face set in a permanent scowl. "Akers," he grunted in greeting.
"Evening, Red," Jeff replied, trying to muster some enthusiasm. "What brings you here?"
Red didn't bother with pleasantries. "I'm here to see if you've finally got some decent information on the Northern Goshawk. Been chasing that bird for years."
Jeff sighed internally. Red was a regular visitor, and his grumpy demeanor often rubbed people the wrong way. "We've got some new pamphlets that might help," he said, pulling out a brochure. "But you know, Red, it wouldn't hurt to be a bit more polite."
Red snatched the pamphlet, grumbling under his breath. "Yeah, yeah. So, you ever seen one of these goshawks yourself?"
Jeff shook his head. "Can't say I have. My job keeps me busy with other things. Speaking of which, how about you, Red? What's your occupation, besides birdwatching?"
Red gave a snort. "Birdwatching is my occupation. What about you, Jeff? What do you actually do around here, besides handing out useless pamphlets?"
Jeff chuckled, refusing to rise to the bait. "I manage the park, Red. It's a full-time job keeping this place running smoothly."
Red rolled his eyes. "Sure, sure. So, do you at least know the best spots to look for a Northern Goshawk around here?"
Jeff pointed to a map on the wall. "They've been spotted around the old Miller farm and near the dense woods by the lake. But they're elusive, Red. You know that."
Red studied the map, nodding slightly. "Alright. I'll check those spots. Thanks, I guess."
With that, Red turned and headed out the door, leaving Jeff shaking his head. "Good luck, Red," he called after him.
The next night, Jeff was finishing up some paperwork when he heard a commotion outside the visitor center. Stepping out, he saw Red, his face pale and his eyes wide with terror, stumbling towards him.
"Jeff! Jeff! You gotta help me!" Red panted, pointing back towards the trail he had come from.
Jeff rushed to his side, concerned. "What's going on, Red? What happened?"
Red gulped, trying to catch his breath. "I was out by the old Miller farm, looking for the goshawk. I saw a nest and thought I'd finally found one. But when I got closer, it was... it was a stuffed hawk! Someone's playing tricks on me!"
Jeff had to bite his lip to keep from laughing. The image of Red, tough and grumpy, being scared by a stuffed bird was almost too much. "Are you sure it was stuffed?"
Red glared at him. "Of course I'm sure! It's not funny, Jeff. Someone's out there, trying to mess with me."
Jeff nodded, trying to maintain a straight face. "Alright, let's go take a look."
They made their way to the old Miller farm, the moon casting eerie shadows through the trees. When they reached the nest, Jeff saw that Red was right: there was a perfectly placed, lifelike stuffed hawk sitting in it.
Jeff examined the scene, noticing a small note attached to the hawk's talon. He pulled it off and read it aloud. "'Gotcha, Red! Better luck next time. - Your Friendly Neighborhood Prankster.'"
Red's face turned redder than usual. "That's it! When I find out who did this, they're gonna pay!"
Jeff couldn't help but chuckle. "Well, Red, looks like you've got a mystery on your hands. Maybe chasing pranksters will be more exciting than chasing goshawks for a while."
Red grumbled, but a small, reluctant smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Yeah, yeah. But mark my words, Jeff. I'm gonna find that goshawk, and the joker who did this, too."
Jeff clapped Red on the back. "I'm sure you will. Come on, let's head back. We can figure out who the prankster is over a cup of coffee."
As they walked back to the visitor center, Red's grumpiness seemed to ease slightly. Jeff couldn't help but feel that, despite his grumbling, Red enjoyed the excitement. And as for Jeff, he was just glad to have another story to add to the ever-growing list of Moon Lake adventures.
