The early morning mist hung low over Moon Lake as Jeff Akers prepared for another day at the park. It had been a rollercoaster of events lately, and he hoped for a quieter day. But life in Moon Lake had a way of surprising him.
As Jeff finished his morning rounds and headed back to the visitor center, he noticed a figure approaching from the parking lot. It was a young man with a confident swagger that immediately set Jeff on edge. As the figure drew closer, Jeff recognized him: Bryce Walker, the infamous antagonist from the town's most talked-about scandal.
Bryce sauntered up to Jeff, a smirk playing on his lips. "Hey, man. I'm looking for someone. Have you seen Jessica Davis around here?"
Jeff's jaw tightened. He knew all about Bryce Walker and the horrible things he had done to Hannah Baker and others. The last thing Moon Lake needed was Bryce causing trouble. "What do you want with Jessica?" Jeff asked, his tone cold.
Bryce's smirk widened. "Just some unfinished business. So, have you seen her or not?"
Jeff stepped closer, his posture firm. "I know who you are and what you've done, Bryce. You're not welcome here. Leave now, or I'll have my dog Yogi bark at you until you do."
Bryce's smirk faltered for a moment, but then he shrugged. "Fine, whatever. I'll find her myself." He turned and walked away, muttering under his breath.
Later that day, Jeff decided to visit Em's Emporium. As he entered, he saw Emily chatting with a young woman who looked anxious. Jeff recognized her as Jessica Davis.
Jessica looked up as the doorbell chimed. "Oh, hi. I'm just looking for a few things, but I keep feeling like I'm being watched."
Emily nodded sympathetically. "It's a small town. People tend to stare. But don't worry, you're safe here."
Just as Jessica began to relax, the door burst open again. Bryce Walker strode in, his eyes locking onto Jessica. "Well, look who it is," he sneered.
Jessica's face went pale. "Bryce, what are you doing here?"
Bryce stepped closer, his voice low and threatening. "Just wanted to have a little chat."
Before things could escalate, Jeff stepped between them. "Back off, Bryce. You're not welcome here."
Bryce scoffed. "Oh, look, the park ranger thinks he's a hero. Why don't you go back to your trees and leave us alone?"
At that moment, Red Knott, the grumpy birdwatcher, walked in, glaring at Bryce. "What's going on here, Akers?"
"Just dealing with some unwanted company," Jeff replied, not taking his eyes off Bryce.
Red looked Bryce up and down, then turned to Jeff with a grin. "You want me to handle this, Jeff?"
Jeff nodded. "Be my guest."
Red turned to Bryce, his face stern. "You heard the man. Leave, or you'll regret it."
Bryce laughed. "And what's an old man like you gonna do about it?"
Red's grin widened. "Oh, I'll show you." With surprising speed, Red kicked Bryce square in the balls.
Bryce doubled over, gasping in pain. "What the hell, man?" he wheezed.
Red leaned in, his voice deadly serious. "Around here, we don't take kindly to bullies. Now get out, before I show you what a real hawk can do."
Bryce, still clutching himself, stumbled towards the door. "This isn't over!" he spat before finally leaving.
Jessica, visibly shaken, turned to Jeff and Red. "Thank you. I didn't know what he would do."
Jeff put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You're safe now, Jessica. We won't let him hurt you."
Emily came around the counter, offering Jessica a cup of tea. "Sit down, take a breath. You're among friends here."
Jessica nodded, tears of relief in her eyes. "Thank you. All of you."
Red chuckled, giving Jeff a pat on the back. "Well, that was more excitement than I signed up for today. But it feels good to put a bully in his place."
Jeff smiled. "Thanks, Red. I couldn't have done it without you."
Red winked. "Anytime, Akers. Anytime."
As the adrenaline of the encounter faded, Jeff felt a renewed sense of purpose. Moon Lake might be small, but with friends like Emily and Red, they could face any challenge together. And if any more troublemakers came their way, they'd be ready.
