Jeff Akers was at the visitor center early, organizing brochures and preparing for another day at Moon Lake. He hoped it would be a quiet one after the recent chaos. As he sipped his coffee, the door opened, and in walked Emily Griffin, accompanied by a woman Jeff had never seen before.
"Morning, Jeff!" Emily called out, her usual cheerful demeanor evident. "I want you to meet my girlfriend, Savannah Mendes."
Jeff blinked, surprised. He hadn't known that Emily was in a relationship, let alone with a woman. "Oh, uh, hi Savannah! Nice to meet you."
Savannah smiled warmly. "Nice to meet you too, Jeff. Emily's told me a lot about you."
Jeff nodded, trying to process this new information. "Emily, I didn't know you were... um..."
Emily laughed, sensing his confusion. "You mean you didn't know I'm bisexual? Yeah, I guess it never came up. But now you know!"
Jeff chuckled awkwardly. "Well, that's great. You two make a lovely couple."
Emily grinned, glancing at Savannah before turning back to Jeff. "Thanks, Jeff. Actually, we were wondering if you'd like to hang out with us today. You know, be our third wheel?"
Jeff hesitated. The idea of being a third wheel sounded awkward, but he didn't want to offend his friends. "Uh, sure, I guess. It could be fun."
Emily clapped her hands together. "Awesome! We're going to the country fair later. You should come with us."
Jeff nodded, still unsure. "I'll think about it. I need to finish up here first."
After Emily and Savannah left, Jeff decided to seek advice. He drove to the cabin where Red Knott was staying while Sally McDonald was away. Red, the grumpy birdwatcher, was always up for a chat, especially when it came to birds.
Jeff found Red sitting on the porch, binoculars in hand. "Morning, Red."
Red grunted a greeting. "Morning, Akers. What brings you here?"
Jeff sat down next to him. "I've got a bit of a dilemma. Emily and her girlfriend want me to be their third wheel at the country fair. I'm not sure how I feel about it."
Red raised an eyebrow. "Third wheel, huh? Sounds awkward as hell. But then again, it's a fair. There's plenty to do, and you don't have to be glued to their sides the whole time."
Jeff sighed. "Yeah, I guess you're right. Maybe I'll give it a try."
Red chuckled. "That's the spirit. And if it gets too awkward, just find a distraction. It's a fair, there's bound to be something interesting."
Feeling a bit more confident, Jeff thanked Red and headed back to the visitor center. Later that day, he met up with Emily and Savannah at the entrance to the country fair. The fairgrounds were bustling with activity, the sounds of laughter and music filling the air.
Emily greeted him with a big smile. "Glad you could make it, Jeff!"
Savannah nodded. "Yeah, this is going to be fun!"
Jeff smiled, still a bit nervous. "Looking forward to it."
As they wandered through the fair, Jeff tried his best to enjoy himself. They played games, rode a few rides, and even shared a giant turkey leg. But as the day went on, he couldn't shake the feeling of being out of place.
Finally, as they were passing by a cotton candy stand, Jeff decided he needed a break. "Hey, I'm going to grab some cotton candy. I'll catch up with you two in a bit."
Emily and Savannah nodded, waving him off. Jeff walked over to the stand, but as he reached for his wallet, he tripped over a loose board on the ground. He stumbled forward, crashing into the stand and sending a cascade of cotton candy flying.
The vendor looked horrified, and Jeff scrambled to his feet, apologizing profusely. "I'm so sorry! Let me help clean up."
The vendor shook his head, muttering about clumsy customers. Jeff helped as much as he could before sheepishly retreating, covered in sticky pink fluff. He spotted Emily and Savannah laughing nearby, having witnessed the whole incident.
Emily walked over, still chuckling. "You alright, Jeff? That was quite a fall."
Jeff sighed, wiping cotton candy from his clothes. "Yeah, I'm fine. Maybe being a third wheel isn't really my thing."
Savannah smiled sympathetically. "It's okay, Jeff. We appreciate you trying."
Emily nodded. "Yeah, thanks for coming with us. We know it's not easy."
Jeff managed a smile. "Thanks, guys. I think I'm going to head back now. But you two have fun."
As Jeff walked away, he couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of the day. Moon Lake was always full of surprises, and today had been no exception. Despite the awkwardness, he was glad he had stepped out of his comfort zone, even if it ended in a sticky situation. And as he drove back to the visitor center, he knew that no matter what, he had friends who appreciated him, third wheel or not.
