Chapter 1: Introduction*

Olivia Pope's heart hammered against her ribcage as she stood in the dimly lit hallway outside their apartment in Cambridge, MA. The air was thick with tension, heavy with the weight of their impending conversation. She raised a trembling hand and unlocked the door, her stomach churning with anxiety.

The door swung open, revealing Maya Pope, her mother, her eyes red-rimmed, haunted by shadows Olivia had never seen before. "Livvie," she said, her voice strained with emotion. "Come in, honey. We need to talk."

Olivia stepped into the cramped apartment, the familiar scent of stale wine enveloping her like a shroud. It was a nice apartment, with a cozy living room and two bedrooms, but the atmosphere was tense and strained.

"What's going on, Mom?" Olivia asked, her voice trembling with apprehension. "Why did you ask me to come home?"

Maya took a long sip of wine, her hand trembling slightly. "Sit down, Livvie. We need to have a serious discussion."

Olivia sank into the comfortable armchair, her heart pounding in her chest. She had a sinking feeling that she wasn't going to like what her mother had to say.

"I'll cut to the chase, Livvie," Maya said, her voice uncharacteristically steady. "I owe a lot of money to some very dangerous people. And I'm out of options."

Olivia's blood ran cold as she realized the gravity of her mother's words. "How much do you owe?" she whispered, already dreading the answer.

"More than I can ever hope to repay," Maya admitted, her eyes downcast with shame. "And they're coming for me, Livvie. They're going to take everything unless I can come up with the money. They've threatened to ruin my career, to hurt me, even to kill me."

Olivia's mind raced as she tried to think of a solution, a way to save her mother from the mess she had created. But deep down, she knew there was only one option left.

"You want me to help you pay off your debt," Olivia said, her voice barely a whisper.

Maya nodded, tears glistening in her eyes. "I'm so sorry, Livvie. I never wanted things to come to this. But I'm desperate, and I don't know what else to do."

Olivia insisted, "How much, Mom? Tell me the amount."

Maya hesitated, then whispered, "It's a million dollars, Livvie."

Olivia felt her heart sink at the enormity of the sum. A million dollars. It seemed like an insurmountable obstacle. But for her mother, she would find a way.

"I'll do it, Mom," Olivia said, her voice steady despite the turmoil raging inside her. "I'll find a way to get the money. I promise."

Maya's eyes filled with gratitude as she reached out and took Olivia's hand in hers. "Thank you, Livvie. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me."

But as Olivia looked into her mother's eyes, she couldn't help but wonder if she had just made a deal with the devil. Memories of her father, a brave man lost in the line of duty, flooded her mind, leaving her feeling more alone than ever.

Olivia sat in the comfortable armchair, the two-bedroom apartment in the condo they now called home, her mind swirling with a mixture of fear, anger, and determination. She thought back to her childhood, to the days when her father, Eli, was still alive. He had been a loving and devoted husband and father, working tirelessly to provide for his family. Olivia remembered how he used to tuck her into bed at night, his deep voice soothing her to sleep with stories of far-off lands and daring adventures.

But then everything changed. One day, when Olivia was just ten years old, Eli didn't come home. Maya had told her that he had been called away on a secret mission, something to do with his work in government security. But as the days turned into weeks and the weeks turned into months, it became clear that he wasn't coming back.

Maya had done her best to hold their family together after Eli's disappearance, but it hadn't been easy. With her career as a financial advisor and Eli's comfortable income, they had once lived a comfortable life. However, Maya's gambling addiction, both legal and illegal, had led to their financial downfall, forcing them to sell their house and move into the cramped apartment where they now lived.

And now, with Maya facing the threat of losing everything, Olivia knew she had to do something. She couldn't bear the thought of her mother being hurt or worse, all because of some debt she had incurred. No, she had to find a way to save her, no matter what it took.

Determined, Olivia stood up from the armchair and paced the room, her mind racing with possibilities. She knew she had to start by finding out more about the people Maya owed money to, to understand who they were dealing with and what they were capable of. And then she had to come up with a plan, a way to raise the one million dollars they needed to pay off the debt and save their home.

As she thought about the daunting task ahead of her, Olivia felt a surge of fear and uncertainty wash over her. Could she really pull this off? Could she find a way to save her mother and keep them from losing everything they had left? She didn't know, but she was willing to try.

With a deep breath, Olivia made a silent vow to herself. She would do whatever it took to save her mother, even if it meant risking everything she had. Because family was everything, and she would never let her mother down, not now, not ever.

And with that thought echoing in her mind, Olivia began to make plans. It was time to take action, to fight back against the forces that threatened to tear their family apart. And she wouldn't stop until she had won.

Olivia opened her laptop, determined to start her investigation. She began by searching through Maya's financial records, looking for any clues that might lead her to the people her mother owed money to. She sifted through bank statements, credit card bills, and loan documents, trying to piece together the puzzle of Maya's debt.

But the more Olivia searched, the more frustrated she became. There were no obvious signs of who Maya's creditors were or how they had managed to accumulate such a large debt. It was as if they had appeared out of nowhere, demanding payment with no explanation or justification.

Frustrated, Olivia closed her laptop and leaned back in her chair, rubbing her temples as she tried to think. She needed more information, but she didn't know where to look. She couldn't ask Maya directly â" she knew her mother would never tell her the truth, not wanting to burden her with the details of her financial troubles.

Suddenly, Olivia's thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door. Startled, she glanced at the clock â" it was late, and she wasn't expecting anyone. With a sense of unease, she rose from her chair and made her way to the door.

As she opened the door, Olivia was surprised to see Abby standing on the other side, her fiery red hair a stark contrast to the dimly lit hallway.

"Abby, what are you doing here?" Olivia asked, her voice tinged with confusion.

Abby stepped inside, her expression serious. "I heard about what happened with Maya," she said, her voice filled with concern. "I wanted to make sure you were okay."

Olivia forced a weak smile, grateful for Abby's concern. "I'm hanging in there," she replied, though her voice betrayed her inner turmoil.

Abby frowned, her eyes narrowing in concern. "Is there anything I can do to help?" she asked, her voice soft.

Olivia hesitated, unsure of how much to confide in her friend. But as she looked into Abby's kind eyes, she knew she could trust her.

"I need to find a way to come up with a lot of money, and fast," Olivia admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "My mother's in trouble, Abby. She's in debt, and the people she owes money to aren't messing around. They've threatened her, and I don't know what to do."

Abby's expression softened with sympathy as she reached out and took Olivia's hand in hers. "I'm so sorry, Liv. I had no idea things were this bad."

Olivia squeezed Abby's hand gratefully, the warmth of her friend's touch providing a small measure of comfort. "I don't know what to do, Abby," she admitted, her voice trembling with emotion. "I feel like I'm in way over my head."

Abby gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. "You're not alone, Liv. We'll figure this out together, I promise."

Olivia felt a flicker of hope stir within her at Abby's words. Maybe she wasn't as alone as she had thought.

"Thank you, Abby," she said, her voice choked with emotion. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

Abby smiled warmly, her eyes sparkling with determination. "You don't have to do this alone, Liv. We'll find a way to save your mom, I promise."

With Abby by her side, Olivia felt a renewed sense of determination. She knew the road ahead would be difficult, but with her friend's support, she was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

As they sat down together in the cozy living room, Olivia felt a glimmer of hope begin to blossom in her heart. She didn't know what the future held, but she knew that as long as she had Abby by her side, she could face anything that came her way.

Together, they would find a way to save Maya and keep their family together. And no matter what obstacles they faced, they would overcome them, because they were stronger together than they could ever be apart.
