Disclaimer: I do not own The Lost Boys.
AN: I don't know I feel like this isn't as good as it could be. Hmmmm. This is strictly a filler chapter.
(Lucy - POV)
This moved here to Santa Carla seemed to be just what my family needed. Michael had meshed well into a group of older teens like himself, they were into motorcycles as well. I was thrilled to hear from him that he had made some friends and he seemed to be getting very acquainted with a girl. A happy outcome for the disastrous ending that had been the end of my marriage and family in Phoenix. I had worried about Sam making friends when I realized that Michael was alright.
Turned out I was worried for nothing. I was stunned when a couple of really pretty girls showed up on the front porch steps. I was off from the Video store for the evening and had been sitting on the porch swing, sipping tea. A handful of motorcycles came into the driveway. The young men and a small boy moved over to the garage where Michael waved them over. The two girls came on the porch and asked if Sam was in. I said he was and told them to go on in. They smiled and thanked me going into the house. A few minutes later Sam came out with the girls behind him. I was happy to see that they had friends.
"Hey mom, this is Star and Calliope. Would it be ok if we have a bonfire here and hang out tonight?" Sam asked.
"Oh, that sounds fun?" I answered, "Want me to order something in or make the chili dogs I had planned?"
"Ooooooh chili dogs." the girls said at the same time.
They both looked to Sam with puppy eyes. They really wanted my chili dogs. I laughed when Sam looked back to me and said Chili Dogs. Both girls said YAY!
"I'll grab my keys and go to the store and get more food." I said and stood and went in the house.
I returned a couple moments later after telling dad that I was popping out for chili dog supplies. He'd waved me on and continued to stuff a squirrel. I came out to all of them talking. Michael and the young man with dark hair was pulling the motor up out of the other blue car in the garage. All of the young men were working on the car and had the little boy sitting on the roof handing them tools.
Sam was at the elbow of the blonde boy with the fishnet shirt on. He was showing him the alternator. I was happy to see all of this happening. The curly blonde was setting up some lights so they could see better. It surprised me to see the curly haired girl, Star, was measuring the tread on the tires and was taking the pressure of them as well. The other girl, Calliope, was talking to the older looking young man that had the mullet. He looked to me and put his hand in his pocket and handed Calliope a wad of cash. She kissed his cheek and run up to me.
"Can I go with you?" she asked me.
"Oh, of course." I told her and we got in the Station Wagon.
She was such a little waifish girl. Blonde with green eyes. Peachy perfect skin. She was a very lovely girl. We spoke avidly on the way to the store. I learned a lot. She and Star are sisters that ran away with their baby brother, Laddie. They had been in the foster system. I'd heard terrible stories about the system. Seemed they were true. They made it here to Santa Carla and the boys were brothers. They all lived together in a cave. My heart broke. They were a bunch of homeless teens and young adults that needed a mother and guidance.
We pulled into the store and entered. Calliope looked like a kid in a candy store. I heard her stomach growl loudly. How long had it been since she'd had a meal? Since any of them had had a meal. She walked with me, and I watched as she'd count the money and look at snacks.
"Go ahead put it in the cart." I said and she put the cereal she wanted in the cart.
We walked around and I coaxed her into putting in some bathroom supplies for them all and some food. I grabbed a big box of Poptart's and opened them giving her a pastry. She devoured it in seconds. I grabbed a large pack of hotdogs and all of the supplies we needed. I gave her the other Poptart when I heard her stomach growl again.
"So, what do y'all do for money?" I asked her.
"Umm, the boys work on cars. It's not a lot of money but it's something." she answered me.
"What about food?" I asked.
"The lady at the convenience store will save the leftovers and give them to us. Sometimes it's enough for a couple of nights and sometimes we can only feed Laddie." Calliope answered with an embarrassed flush.
"Don't be embarrassed honey. Would you like to shower and have clean clothes when we get back?" I replied to her.
"Yeah, I'd love that." she said with a smile.
We checked out and made it back to the house. Calliope got out of the car and let them all know that there were groceries that needed to be brought it. They all lined up and grabbed the groceries and I had nothing to bring into the house.
I watched Calliope go to the mullet blonde and tell him about my offer for them to bathe. He nodded at her, and she hugged him. What was the deal between them? He looked to the others and shared what I had offered. Star had a look of relief on her face. She grabbed Laddie and said bath time. He scrunched up his little face but followed her as Michael showed them to the bathroom and got the clothes, I told him to. I started the meal and talked with them all as they hung out in the kitchen. I found out all their names and found them all to be so charming.
My boys melded well with them. Michael and Dwayne and David talked shop. Sam and Paul and Marko spoke about comics, art and music. Calliope helped me until Star and Laddie came back. Star took her spot while she went to bathe. I didn't notice that David had disappeared with her until they had come back both clean. They must be together was all I could think.
I remembered being this young. It was 20 years before, but I had been young once and in love. But I watched them all. They way they all reacted around each other. Star and Michael blended with each other and were separate from the group and yet an extension. Sam and little Laddie were the same, blended extensions. Then there was Calliope and the other 4 boys. They seemed to move around her like they were all in an intricate dance. All going to the beat of her drum while still bringing a harmony. It was something to watch. I had seen this one time before. At Woodstock. There had been a young couple that flowed around each other, in each other and yet separate. It was fascinating to see again.
When I got the food finished, they all lined up, clean and in clean clothes, to get some food. I made a plate for Laddie first. He was happy to see a large hotdog on his plate. He didn't want chili but was happy for the chips and apple slices. He sat and I made myself a plate and sat beside him to make sure he didn't choke. I watched as they made their plates. I was happy to see them eat after no telling how many meals they had missed.
Dad came in just in time to get himself a plate. I noticed him tense a bit when he noticed the swarm of teens in the kitchen at the table.
"Lucy, dear, I thought the slumber parties were over when you left." he said and peeked to make sure his shelf in the fridge had not been touched.
"Dad!" I said with a smile.
The teens didn't seem to notice as they inhaled their food. Dad just chuckled and looked over the crew. He shook his head and retreated back into his room. Conversation was light and flowed well. They ate everything and helped clean up when it was done. I gathered them all into the living room to watch movies. I just had the feeling to keep them all. They would be safe here. The streets, a cave, was not safe. My motherly instincts wanted to embrace them all. But I knew I couldn't push.
They watched two movies when they said that they should leave. I had sighed but smiled and nodded. I assured them at any time they could stay over and sleep. David had nodded and said maybe next time. I truly hoped there would be a next time. They deserved to have a safe nights sleep.
