Kira groaned as she glared at the back of Conner's head as she rode in the back seat of his car. Today was just a royal disaster and the yellow dino ranger was ready to crack some skulls. She was sure there was a very good reason why she was in the back seat of Conner's car and not comfortably seated in the front passenger seat of Tommy's jeep or the same position in Trent's sports car, she just didn't know what it was.
She looked away from the windshield just as Conner, for some inexplicable reason, stood on the brakes throwing her into the seat in front of her with an audible grunt.
"Damn it, Conner, watch it!" she exclaimed slapping the back of his seat with the palm of her hand. She then looked to see a tyrannodrone sprawled over the hood of the car.
"Holy…!" she exclaimed.
"I second that…" Conner agreed as he took off his seatbelt and pushed his way out of the vehicle, lifting the seat so she could follow suit.
"What the hell?" Ethan asked as they gathered at the front of the car.
"What's going on?" Tommy asked coming from behind the car, his own martial arts honed reflexes the only reason he hadn't hit Conner's car sitting in the middle of the dirt road.
They saw the Tyrannodrones and realized they were in battle with someone. They got into the fray and found a single, petite teenager in the middle of the crowd. She was wearing a blue hooded cloak and wielding some sort of power, but it was clear she was weakening as the hoard got the upper hand. The start of a dogpile formed over her, and they thought it was over, but a black dome pushed the drones off of her and they flew in various directions. That, however, clearly took everything she had left as when the dome disappeared she fell to her knees utterly spent. From there she fell forward so that she was leaning on her elbows.
Tommy and Conner made eye contact and soon the four of them formed a circle around the stranger, with Trent joining them as soon as he arrived on scene.
"What happened?" he asked.
"Don't know…" Conner replied "T-drones seem really interested in her… can't begin to tell you why."
The Tyrannodrones fled at the arrival of the five of them and they turned inward to the cloaked girl.
Raven had been utterly bewildered, the last thing she had remembered was being engulfed in a blinding white light. When it cleared she found herself alone in the woods surrounded by foot soldiers that made monsters like Cinderblock look attractive.
"So… you're the famous Raven…" a woman, clad in black leather, said. She had strange black cornrows and wore dark green almost black lipstick.
"Famous… funny I didn't think I was that well known…" Raven deadpanned warming up her powers for another fight.
"I am Elsa, my master is interested in a little deal with you."
"If it requires me serving your master you can tell him to forget it I serve no master… my father tried that trick, I'd say ask him how that turned out, but I vanquished him." Raven replied sharply.
"Pity… we have the only means of getting you back to your friends… if you had helped us we would have sent you home… now you're stuck here!" Elsa replied none too casually.
"Then you don't know me as well as you think you do" Raven replied in anger "Azerath Metron Zynthos!"
A wave of black energy flowed towards Elsa knocking her backwards through the trees several hundred yards.
"My master is not going to like this!" she said standing "Attack!" She ordered, then fled to let the foot soldiers take care of things.
Raven took stance and began to fight as they attacked but there were too many and even her energy reserves had their limits.
She heard 4 new voices off to her right but wrote them off not sure if they were on her side, the side of these weird creatures or a neutral third party but she wasn't going to waste her energy on figuring it out. She didn't notice what they did until she used up the last of her powers for a final push to give herself some space to hopefully find a way to retreat, gracefully or otherwise.
Raven was taken aback when the four obviously human individuals suddenly formed a circle around her facing out to protect her from the hoard she had been dropped in the middle of. A fifth joined them asking what was happening but obviously they didn't know.
She didn't notice when the attackers fled until a hand was presented to help her to her feet. She looked up and saw a man with spiky brown hair reaching down, soft, chocolate brown eyes regarding her with concern. He looked to be in his mid to late twenties. She took his hand and let him help her to her feet before taking a moment to look at the other four, all of which she estimated to be around 18. She was feeling weak from the fight and clearly it showed because the one that helped her to her didn't immediately release her, instead he adjusted his grip as if inviting her to lean on him for physical support and it was with a lot of reluctance that she took him up on the offer. Then the only female, a blonde about her own height came over and took his place. Raven found it easier to lean on this girl given their equal height.
"What's your name?" she asked.
"Raven…"
"Kira…"
One of the other males, this one had sandy blonde to light brown hair had a weird expression on his face and Kira pegged him with a glare that seemed to scream 'Do it and die' though Raven wasn't quite sure what the nonverbal threat was about.
"Chill, Kira…"
"No, Conner, not now… not with those freaks planning God knows what!" Kira retorted to 'Conner' as they rounded the back of the larger of the three vehicles, the jeep. "They wanted her for a reason… they don't attack that fiercely for nothing."
The man with spiked hair, the one that had initially helped her to her feet put down the back of the jeep so Raven could sit, and she noticed him reaching for something. She then realized upon getting a good look at it that apparently a first aid kit is a first aid kit no matter what universe you find yourself in. Then she began to wonder why he was reaching for a first aid kit. Then she realized why when she touched her own face, and her fingers came back with a small amount of blood something had cut her and she was bleeding.
"It's okay… it's not that big a deal." She said putting a hand up as he came to clean it.
"No… it is… that needs cleaned." He protested and she got a feeling he was used to having others listen to him and do as they are told.
She opened her abilities and began to feel the wary concern from all five of them.
"I'm fine, trust me give me a little time and I can use my powers to heal it."
"You can accelerate your own healing process?" a black teen in blue asked sounding equal parts shocked and impressed.
"Among other things, yes…"
"Forgive me… but I'd rather clean it anyway, just to be safe." The oldest said, she pegged him at likely a mentor figure for the four teenagers.
"Fine…" she sighed putting her hands down and letting him deal with it.
"I'm sorry… we really haven't been very polite… my name is Tommy… you'll notice these four calling me 'Dr. Oliver' or 'Dr. O' because on top of mentoring them I am their science teacher." he said as he gently cleaned the small cut but didn't really bandage it as the bleeding had apparently stopped.
"This is Conner, Ethan, and Trent… I believe Kira already introduced herself." Tommy continued; each teenager waved or otherwise drew attention to him or herself as their name was said.
"She did… and I'm guilty of that too, my name is Raven." She replied.
She watched as Tommy took lead and instructed the other four teenagers that they were going to regroup at his house and try to figure out what the Tyrannodrones wanted with her.
"Wait, I have a question… why do the five of you seem to know so much about these, Tyrannodrones?" Raven asked as Tommy cleaned up and closed the first aid kit returning it to where it had been securely stashed away under the back seat of the jeep that she had finally concluded was likely his. The red and white cars probably belonged to the teenagers.
Tommy looked away for a second then made eye contact with the red clad teenager, Conner.
"That… is an interesting story…" Conner trailed not sure exactly where to go with that statement giving Raven the feeling that he was an inexperienced leader. Trying to grow into the role he had somehow been assigned.
She could feel the insecurities mounting, this wasn't a story they would tell just anybody.
"Look I get the distinct feeling I have been transported to a dimension other than my own home so honestly there is no reason that we should keep anything really a secret." She said as she slid off the back of the Jeep to stand on the ground finally truly taking in the variance in height between the team members. Kira was the same height as her, Conner, Ethan, and Trent were all taller than the two of them but still shorter than Tommy who was the tallest of the five and, by her estimates, the oldest of the five.
"She's right, but this is probably a conversation to have at the house or the command center." The white clad Hispanic teen, Trent, supplied.
"Trent's right… let's go… Raven… come with me." He closed up the back of the jeep then walked around to the passenger side to politely open the door for her. Raven watched briefly as the teens piled into the other two cars. Conner and Ethan in the red coup, probably Conner's given that he got into the driver's seat. Kira and Trent got into the white sedan. Trent in the driver's seat, after opening the door for Kira, once again giving the impression that the vehicle was his. Also showing that Tommy had some influence on these teenagers, either that, or his parents raised him the way Tommy had been, that seemed to be a common practice in most universes she had spent time in.
She then turned and climbed into the Jeep at Tommy's instruction, and he closed the door behind her. She wasn't too used to people opening doors for her, but she had this distinct feeling that this was something Tommy did on a regular basis, especially for those of the opposite sex. She had heard stories of it being considered the thing that men were supposed to do but there was a bit of pushback from feminists that it was demeaning and degrading and implied that women weren't able to open doors for themselves. She didn't have an opinion, truthfully she just saw it as he was doing something out of curtesy and old habit. She thought the feminists were being too touchy and reading too much into a habit that had been taught to men likely for decades, Cyborg did it often, he was honestly one of the few she'd ever experienced open doors for her other than Tommy.
She shook off that mental tangent and put on her seatbelt as Tommy got into the driver's seat securing his own before turning on the engine and starting off towards wherever his house was.
Tommy sighed as he packed up the first aid kit, there were so many questions floating around in his mind about Raven he didn't know where to begin. Her skin tone and coloring had given him the initial impression that she was likely an alien but then she mentioned dimensional travel, and it opened up pandora's box of other possibilities that he hadn't even considered. Then he remembered the black dome she had created to push back the Tyrannodrones. This led him to the idea that perhaps her genetic sequence was different, maybe mutated in such a way that she had powers similar to their own civilian powers and the coloration was an extension of the genetic mutations that gave her those abilities. That lead to the gem on her forehead which he figured might have some significance to her powers and or culture then again that might just be a personal fashion choice he wasn't sure but at that moment he wasn't going to ask her any questions that the team might need to be aware of.
He also, in that drive, concluded that she was younger than his team, though he wasn't sure what gave him that impression. They were close to or already eighteen and he had a feeling she was closer to sixteen, at the oldest perhaps she might be barely seventeen, as if her seventieth birthday had barely passed.
Tommy also concluded that situations like this put Raven in an awkward position, she was an introvert, not one to reach out and make connections with people, usually others had to wade their way in, start the bond and conversation with her. Then if she deemed that she wanted to, she would reach back. He was okay with that, he'd delt with introverts before, it was just his team he was worried about. He wasn't sure Conner wasn't going to push too hard or get offended when Raven wasn't willing to accept his more outgoing nature. Trent was like him, he'd roll with the punches and figure out how to address the situation, Kira, and Ethan, truthfully he'd have to learn more about Raven's personality to see how she'd mix with the two of them. Kira was usually a little more fluid and Ethan was just Ethan.
They pulled up to the house and got out, Conner was already there, Tommy made a mental note to, once again, have a heart to heart or perhaps more of a "come to Jesus" with Conner and his tendency to speed when it wasn't prudent to do so. His little coup wasn't all wheel drive like Tommy's jeep so he could easily get bogged down on the dirt road leading to the house. Sure, Tommy would be able to pull him out but that was a pain in the neck Tommy didn't really want to deal with. He also worried if the ground got slick for some reason Conner could easily lose control for the same reason, the car not being all wheel drive, and Conner could easily kill himself and/or his passengers.
They went inside and took seats around the living room.
"Okay I have a question to set up a baseline on what you might or might not already know." Tommy sighed at this point electing to stand and pace rather than sit like his team. His own adrenaline is still a little too high for him to sit and relax. "On your Earth is there a team known as the 'Power Rangers'?"
Raven's bewildered look told Tommy all he needed to know even before she opened her mouth to speak.
"No… and I'm assuming there is no such thing as the Teen Titans on this Earth." She replied.
"No" Tommy replied stopping his pacing and looking at her with a quirked brow.
"Why do you ask?" Kira chimed from her position in an armchair to Raven's left.
"Because back home I am a member of that group, and … I am assuming the five of you are members of this group… the power rangers?" Raven replied looking among the teenagers.
Tommy nodded, she was catching on faster than he'd anticipated, but that would make things easier for him.
"Yes, as power rangers we have these… dino morphers…" he summoned his for demonstrative purposes, "they give us access to unique powers, armor and weapons… but unlike teams in the past, of which there have been several, ours give us unique abilities outside of the transformation these morphers create."
"Each of us has a different 'civilian power' as we call them… Conner's is super speed, Dr. O can turn invisible, Kira has a supersonic scream we call the 'ptera scream'" Ethan added, and Raven mused this was the most he'd said since she met them.
"What about you and Trent?" she asked.
"My power is known as camouflage it's similar to Dr. Oliver's invisibility. but he has more freedom to move about while using his civilian power… mine is really only effective if I'm still." Trent replied.
"I can turn my skin into an impenetrable shell" Ethan replied pulling his sleeves up and summoning his power. His forearms became covered in impressive blue scales and Raven wondered if even Starfire could penetrate.
"That's the basics about us, now tell us about you, Raven," Kira said, "What can you tell us about the Teen Titans?"
"In my world like I said there are no power rangers, but there are the Teen Titans." She paused looking among them "The team is myself and my friends, Nightwing, Starfire, Beast Boy, Sage, Mockingbird and Cyborg… most of those are code names, Starfire is just the closest she could translate her name from her native language."
"Starfire… is she from another country or another planet?" Conner asked.
"With a name that translates that way I would assume she's from another planet, am I right, Raven?" Tommy asked.
"Yes… then of course there is me." Raven sighed "This is hard… I don't often talk about myself especially to people I have just met."
"You don't have to launch into your life story, God knows we didn't, just tell us what you can do." Conner shrugged.
"I am an empath and I get the feeling this part is going to make waves for a bad reason, I… I am also a highly trained sorceress. Magic is the basis for most of my offensive and defensive abilities which include a form of telekinesis, and teleportation, I can create portals to different locations as long as I know where I want to go I can pretty much get there. I can even traverse to different dimensions; I just don't know how to get to my dimension from this one. I am trained in hand-to-hand combat but since I have few physical enhancements such as no super strength and only marginally enhanced durability, as you put it, I am more effective staying out of the center of the fray and using my magic to help in the fight from a distance." She paused "The fight earlier just pushed me to exhaustion… it was too much for me on my own."
"So… if we had arrived sooner you might have been better off?" Trent assumed "You would have been able to pull back to a place where you're more comfortable and used your powers to contend with the Tyrannodrones."
"Yes…" Raven replied.
Raven looked at Tommy the wary tension rising specifically from him. What kind of negative experiences had he had with magic to cause that reaction? She didn't know and she'd need to ask him, but not here in front of a team that obviously looked up to and respected him.
Tommy bit his lip, why did it have to be magic? He looked at Raven, she was so different than any magic user he'd ever met, perhaps he could get passed it and deal with her. She was so quiet and introverted, and it worried him having her so isolated from the friends she clearly relied on to keep her safe.
Tommy had finally decided to take a seat but in moving the trunk of his body a wave of pain ripped through his side forcefully reminding him of the ribs Xeltrax had broken a few days earlier in an ambush that Tommy still hadn't figured out a reason for. He couldn't keep in the hiss of pain or keep the truth of the injury off of his face.
The teen's reacted with a chorus of his name.
"Dr. O" Conner and Ethan
"Dr. Oliver" Trent
"Tommy…" Kira
That was when Tommy realized he had yet to tell the other four he was injured.
"When were you going to tell us about that?" Kira asked sharply.
"It… it's not that big a deal." He hissed through his teeth, and he was sure all five teens realized he was lying through said teeth.
"Here, I can help with that." Raven said standing to her feet drawing all eyes on the young sorceress.
"How can you do that?" Ethan asked looking at her in curiosity.
"You know how you concluded I can accelerate my own healing process… I can also use my powers to heal others." She replied stepping forward towards Tommy, pushing her cloak back, so it fit more like a cape.
Tommy thought for a moment then moved his hand and watched as a white glow engulfed hers. She was healing him; a minor bit of magic he was sure she performed daily while working with other heroes who could get hurt at any given moment. He watched as she moved her hand over the affected area and a soothing warmth spread through his side driving away the pain as the bones mended.
She finished and backed away and they made eye contact. The relief palpable in his expression.
"Thanks…" he said in genuine relief.
"No problem." She replied returning to where she had been seated.
The room was silent, thick with unasked questions and Raven made eye contact with Kira. She didn't want to be the one to voice the questions the other four had but it was clear she was set apart from the issue enough that she was unafraid to question Tommy. It wasn't that the teens feared him far from it, they loved him, looked at him like an older brother or father figure and that seemed to be the source of the problem. They didn't want to question his decisions, but they needed to know why he felt he had to keep secrets when she was learning with time that a team should never keep secrets.
"So… can we address the proverbial elephant in the room…" Raven trailed deciding it was going to be up to her to break the tense silence.
"Yeah, when were you going to tell us you were injured, Dr. O?" Conner said springing off her suggestion to clear the air before going any further with the issues brought to light by her presence.
Tommy looked down at his hands. Honestly he didn't know why he hadn't told them about his injury when it took place.
"Sorry, guys look I didn't think it was a big deal at the time… it isn't like it's the first time that I've been injured in the line of ranger business."
"I know this is none of my business, but do you mind if I put my two cents in?" Raven asked.
"Go ahead…" Kira said, "I think an outsider's advice might be good."
"Look, I don't think it matters how many times you have been injured, it matters that all five of you know when one of you has a weakness so they can pick up the slack. As it stands they didn't know you had a problem so they wouldn't understand if, in the clutch, you can't do what you always do." Raven said. "None of you have an accelerated healing ability… this time you're lucky I was here to fix those ribs but if I hadn't been here you would still have them to deal with and it would be better if the rangers knew so you could step back and heal." She gestured to the four teenagers "I don't think any of them would mind if you took a step back and let them handle the fighting while you heal."
Tommy looked at his hand then made eye contact with Raven. She was so much wiser than the sixteen or seventeen he had her pegged at. Given her nature thus far he had concluded that she was the type they would describe as having an 'old soul' or being extremely mature for her age.
"Dr. O, she's right… if you'd told us we would have let you step back and heal… we can handle Mesogog and his forces… we're a team. We back each other up." Conner said leaning his elbows on his knees amidst a chorus of agreement from the other three.
"Though thanks to her we don't have to deal with that…" Ethan sighed "Thank you, Raven."
"No problem, hopefully there won't be a next time… but by the sound of it that is a distinct possibility." She sighed. "Who is this Mesogog I've heard you talking about?"
"He's the mastermind behind the attacks on this town… his goal… return to the world to the age of the dinosaurs." Tommy explained.
"That's new…" Raven admitted though this led her to file him alongside Slade. He was probably the real threat but at this point hadn't seen fit to get his hands dirty when he had no shortage of flunkies to do it for him.
"Rangers you need to head home, tomorrow is Saturday, so we'll regroup at the command center around noon and try to figure out how to get Raven home." Tommy finally said, looking at the clock and seeing it was pushing 8 in the evening.
The boys left but Kira seemed to be settling in.
"I live here." She responded to the unasked question of why she wasn't headed out like the boys. "Tommy took me in as a foster after…"
"You don't have to explain." Raven gave a soft look as Kira got up from her chair. Her powers told her more about this girl than she was sure the blonde would want just anybody to know. She looked up to Tommy as a girl would an older brother or father figure and Raven figured from there that her life prior to living here was bad. When she admitted she'd come into this house as a foster it just cinched it.
"I've got to study… I'll see you later." She announced then headed upstairs.
