Hello all! We just finished season 7 and I am so sad that there isn't more! That being said, this chapter and the beginning of the next will wrap up the last couple of episodes, and from there we will jump in to what I think their life after the series would look like. Thanks for all the reads snd support!
Patrick was scared. No, that was a lie; he was terrified. He'd made Teresa mad, and while that shouldn't have been anything new, it was. They'd had their fair share of disagreements over the years and he'd lost count of the number of times he'd upset her, but somehow this time felt different. He knew it was because they were so involved. They were no longer just colleagues; they were partners, lovers. She wasn't just his girlfriend, she was so much more.
The elevator doors opened and Patrick stepped inside with Teresa, standing as close to her as he dared. Her shoulders were set, her mouth a thin line, and he fought to keep his eyes on the floor instead of on her. Each ding as the car reached a new floor made him want to wince and he felt his heart hammering in his chest. They had rode in together this morning and he tried to work up the courage to ask if he should call a cab, but just the thought of speaking the words make his throat close. If he called a cab, where would he take it? Would she want him to go back to the trailer? They hadn't willingly spent a night apart since the night he was arrested by TSA and he felt sick at his stomach at the thought.
The elevator finally stopped in the lobby and he trailed behind her as they headed to her SUV, his hands shoved deep in his pockets. Teresa unlocked the car and climbed inside without a word, the engine roaring to life. He was relieved when she waited for him to climb in instead of driving off without him, although she immediately turned up the radio as she backed out of her spot; a clear warning not to talk to her.
Patrick wrung his hands together in his lap and tried to think of something to say, but he couldn't think straight. He understood her anger; he'd made a choice for her without consulting her. His actions might have been a bit selfish, but he had done them out of love. He tried to calm his spiraling mind, but it was no use. He simply couldn't imagine a life without Teresa, and he couldn't bare the thought that he had finally fucked everything up so badly that she would walk away from him. Why did he always hurt the people he loved? His stomach was knotting painfully and it felt like someone was standing on his chest. His throat started to feel tighter and tighter until he finally gasped and doubled over in his seat.
Teresa eyed him and turned the radio down as her concern for him outweighed her anger. "Patrick?"
He didn't answer because he couldn't hear her. His ears were ringing and his vision tunneled to a single speck of dirt on the floor mat. His heart hammered in his ears and his body felt numb. He couldn't feel the car around him, only the numbness spreading through his limbs, slowly choking him.
"Patrick." Teresa repeated his name as she turned the radio off and began to pull off the road when he failed to respond to her. She put the SUV in park and reached over to grab his shoulder. "Jane!" Her voice was firm to hide her own rising panic; was he sick? Had someone done something to him?
The familiar sound of her practically shouting his name and the touch to his shoulder was his life line. It was like someone had been holding him under water, drowning him, and her touch had drug him back to the surface. He sucked in a ragged breath and his head snapped up to look at her, his eyes wide and a bit wild.
"Patrick talk to me, what is wrong? Do I need to call 9-1-1?" She pressed the back of her hand against his forehead. His skin was clammy, but he didn't feel any warmer than usual.
"No." He rasped and fumbled for the window switch. He rolled the window down and took another labored breath. "Panic attack." He leaned his head back against the headrest and winced at the pounding in his head. He couldn't remember the last time he'd had one, probably sometime before he was institutionalized, and he'd forgotten just how bad they could get.
"Patrick." Teresa sighed and reached over to rub soothing circles on his back. "Breathe with me, okay? In, and out. In, and out." She talked him through the breathing exercise, her hand moving to the hair at his nape and scratching softly. Her voice and her touch slowly grounded him as the numb feeling began to sidsapate from his body. When he finally felt like he could breath again he turned to look at her, his eyes sad and defeated.
"Thank you." His voice was shaky and uncertain.
"What happened?" She removed her hand from his neck, but she let her arm remain resting against his on the console. He looked at his hands clenched together in his lap and the words started tumbling out of him before he could stop them.
"I was going to ask you if you wanted me to call a cab instead of riding with you. But then I would've had to ask if you wanted me to stay at the trailer tonight, and the thought of not being with you, of going to bed with you mad at me and us not speaking…" He shook his head. "And then I was thinking about what would happen if this was the final straw, if I had finally pushed you too far, if you had finally realized how damaged I am. It was just too much." He scrubbed his hands over his face, his eyes burning with unshed tears.
Teresa was quiet for a moment as she tried to decide how to handle the situation. The fact was that they were going to have to have a serious talk and it was probably going to be uncomfortable for both of them, but the reality was that there was no way she could just walk away from this man. But she also needed him to respect that fact that she was upset and he had been wrong and unfair to her without disregarding his fears and anxieties over the situation. She ran a hand through her hair with a tired sigh before reaching across the SUV for him.
"Hey." She used her fingers to gently turned his chin so that she could look him in the eyes. "We will talk about this, but not right now, okay? I need sleep, and time to cool off, to get my thoughts in order. But I don't want you to spend all night thinking I am just going to leave you. We're going to figure this out."
"Okay." He nodded before finally taking a deep breath, shuddering on the exhale. "We'll figure it out." He repeated. "I can stay at the trailer tonight, if you want." He offered quietly. She didn't look at him as she turned her focus back to the road as she put the SUV in to drive and pulled back on to the road.
"Do you know what I really want?" She said after a moment, taking an unexpected turn.
"Hmm?" Patrick looked at her.
"Some ice cream." In that moment he knew she was offering him a white flag, a temporary truce until they could sit down and discuss the situation.
"Okay." He let himself sit back in his seat and made himself take several more deep breaths. They were going to figure this out, they were going to be okay.

"You look tired." Patrick was lying on his side so that he could watch Teresa, who was in the process of brushing out her damp hair. The sun was setting outside and a soft breeze was flowing through the open windows of the air stream. The sound of the ducks on the pond and the evening birds carried on the breeze and he felt himself falling in love with this place even more.
"How flattering." She rolled her eyes as she ran the brush through her damp hair one final time before stowing it in the bathroom and crossing the trailer to where Patrick was waiting for her. "It's your fault, you know?"
"I don't doubt that, but care to explain?" He asked as she sat down on the edge of her bed and folded her legs beneath her.
"I have hardly slept since you left." Patrick winced at her words and ran a hand over his face.
"I am sorry, Teresa, I-". She held up a hand to stop him and he fell silent. They'd had this conversation already and she didn't harbor any ill feelings towards him, she just wanted to give him a hard time.
"You came back, that is what matters. And more importantly, you seem like you've figured some things out for yourself."
"You could say that." He offered her an apologetic smile. "I'll never run away from you again, I promise." His eyes words were sincere and his gaze was intense.
"I'm holding you to that." She crawled beneath the blankets and snuggled close to him, her eyes searching his face. "Are we going to be okay?"
"Yes." There was no hesitation in his answer. "Yes, we will."
"Okay, good." She nodded, a smile playing at her lips as she reached out to cup his cheek. They held each other's gaze for a long moment and she was relieved that her world felt normal once again. She wanted to tell him her secret, God how she wanted to tell him. But, it just didn't feel like the right time. So much had happened lately and she didn't want that to overshadow her news. Almost losing him today had terrified her in ways she hadn't known possible, and she had a much better understanding of Patrick's fears of late.
"Do you want another pony?" He broke the silence without warning, pulling her from her heavy thoughts.
"What?" Teresa laughed at the seemingly random question, light hearted question.
"When I told you I had a surprise, you guessed a pony. Is it because you wanted another?"
"You're ridiculous." She shook her head. "No ponies. I just couldn't imagine what you had to show me out here until I saw it."
"Ah. What ever happened to that pony?"
"I believe her name is Princess and she is still being loved by the kids down at the community equestrian center back in California."
"In hindsight, maybe not the most practical gift. I'm sorry you couldn't keep her."
"It's the thought that counts." She smiled.
"So, you couldn't sleep without me?"
"I didn't say that."
"You were that mad at me?"
"In the beginning, yes. Then worried. Then I just missed you. I guess I've gotten used to sleeping with you." She dropped her gaze; that was only the partial truth. She'd found out she was pregnant the day he left, and her world had been spinning ever since.
"I'm sure the wild sex before bed helps too." His eyes were teasing and she swatted his chest.
"Oh hush." She turned her back to him so that she could scoot against him and hide her expression. He wrapped an arm around her and snuggled her close, his lips pressing against her head.
"If it makes you feel better, I didn't sleep good either."
"Maybe a little bit." She stifled a yawn and ran her fingers over his forearm. "I'm just glad you're back." Her throat felt tight and she swallowed, willing herself not to get emotional.
"Are you okay?" He murmured close to her ear, his stubble tickling her neck. He could feel that something was off, he just couldn't decide what it was. Was it the fact that she'd almost lost him today, or that he'd disappeared for a week? That week had been the longest of his life. He'd realized after only a day or two that he'd rather live with her and the fear of the unknown than without her and the danger. But, he'd needed time to figure out a plan, to figure out himself, and his only regret was that he had once again hurt her in the process.
"I'm fine."
"Promise?"
"Yes." She grabbed his hands and squeezed. "I promise."
"Okay." He was quiet for a moment. He felt his own anxieties surfacing and gave her a squeeze. "Do you know what this means?"
"What does what mean?" She twisted in his arms so that she could look at him.
"You've had me arrested twice now."
"Excuse me, the first time was all your own doing." She rolled her eyes but she was smiling.
"But it was on your behalf. So it counts."
"I'll never forget how surprised I was to see you on that plane." She laughed. "Or the look on your face when TSA detained you."
"Sometimes a man has to do what he has to do." He smiled at her, his eyes soft and loving. "It was worth it."
"Come here." She pulled him into a tender kiss, her fingers tangling in his hair. "I love you."
"You're my world." He caressed her cheek and his expression was so tender, so loving…she would tell him in the morning; they were going to be parents.

"You're pregnant!" Patrick pulled back from their embrace with an intoxicating grin. There were tears in his eyes and Teresa knew her expression matched his.
"I'm pregnant!" She laughed as he took her hands in his. It felt so good to finally say it out loud, to share her excitement and wonder with her husband. "We're married."
"Yes, we are." He cupped her cheek and brushed his lips against hers. "And we're going to be parents."
"I guess we tend to do things big, huh?" She teased as she leaned back into his side. He wrapped an arm around her and held her tightly against his side, his fingers caressing her arm.
"Yes, we do." He murmured. They watched as their wedding guests danced to another song across the pond and she sighed in total contentment. Her world felt perfect, complete. "How are you feeling?"
"I can't even begin to put words to that question." She beamed at him. "Perfect. I feel perfect."
"You too?" His eyes crinkled as he smiled at her. "Should we go back?"
"It's our wedding, I think we can do whatever we want."
"Mmm, true, but I feel like whisking you away and having my way with you would be a bit rude. Someone might think we'd be abducted."
"And what way would you have with me?" She arched a brow and tugged him close by his tie, her nose brushing against his.
"You'll have to use your imagination for now." He grinned at her and kissed her. "But save that thought for later; I have big plans for us."
"Oh, yeah? Do they involve mints on pillows? Or an air mattress in a shack?"
"Oh, you're so funny." He poked her in the side. "You look absolutely beautiful, have I told you that?"
"Maybe once or twice." She smiled. "Thank you. You're quite handsome yourself. I like this color on you." She fingered the light blue tie.
"Noted." His eyes twinkled. "Let's go back, I want to dance."
"You want to dance?" She eyes his suspiciously. "Since when?"
"Since I married the most amazing woman in the world, and it is our wedding day, and you're pregnant, and the world is just right."
"Mmm, you don't have to seduce me you know?"
"I believe we've had this discussion before." He murmured as he leaned in his kiss her once again. "Come on, Lisbon. Let's go dance."
