Based on a head canon I saw on Tumblr. April yells at Robert.
Its not my place to be doing this.
As Robert Avery rambles on about something on the other end of the phone, asking how Jackson and Harriet are doing (she'd given him her phone number for emergencies, and maybe on the off chance that he might actually attempt to be more involved in their lives after Jackson's last visit), she can't help but feel irritated. He's just so casual - acting as though they're close friends and not like she's the ex-wife-turned-girlfriend of the son that he abandoned, or the mother of the granddaughter he's failed to be there for. It makes her feel even more grateful for her own family, as crazy and annoying as she finds them at times. At least they've always been there, even when she hasn't wanted them to be.
April finds herself biting her lip, trying to dissipate some of the anger she feels and bury that feeling deep down - at least until the phone call is over. She's not entirely sure its working, though, and his next comment is sure to send her over the edge.
"Hey, if you're not too busy, perhaps you, Jackson and your little girl could come visit me sometime? If he's open to it, that is. I'd love to show you around."
They could come visit him? Why couldn't he be the one making an effort for a change? The only times that Jackson had seen him had been in Montana. All two of them.
"Or maybe you could come visit Boston?" April suggests, trying to keep her tone polite, "You could share some old memories and show Harriet around. I'm sure she'd love that."
There's a pause for a moment, and a part of her can already tell what's coming. She's not sure why she bothered asking in the first place.
"Well, its just...I can't really be taking time off. I don't have anyone to cover, you see, and things are busy around this time of year. And Boston...well, there are a lot of bad memories for me there, too. Kinda grateful to be away from all that. You get it, right?"
No, She thinks. Not sure that I do.
"Do you even want to have a relationship with him, Robert? Or with Harriet?" April questions, feeling the anger she's been trying to bury rise up to the surface, "I just feel like it shouldn't fall on us to be the ones making an effort and putting in the work here. I get it, you're busy - we all are, but you're the one who walked out on him, and yet you expect him to go out of his way to visit you, without ever making it a two-way street. I don't think thats very fair! You're supposed to be the parent here!"
There's a long pause, and then a sigh on the other end of the line, and April wishes she could've just bitten her tongue and not snapped. Still, it's so hard not to. She wonders why he even bothers phoning sometimes. Its not as if they're making any progress here.
"Okay, yeah, maybe I did deserve that, but I was being truthful - I really don't have anyone to cover. Its mostly just me here, but...I don't know, I'll see if I can sort something out, okay? I can't promise anything though."
April nods, before realising that he can't see her, and responding with a simple, "Okay."
There's another awkward silence for a few moments, before they both say goodbye to one another and hang up their phones.
Later that night, when she joins Jackson in bed, she can't help but guilty about her little outburst. The last thing she wants is to make things between Robert and Jackson even more difficult than they already seem - especially when he's been so supportive of her with her own family (who took a while to wrap their heads around her divorces and subsequent rekindling with Jackson, but managed to get their eventually).
"I...kind of yelled at your dad today. I'm sorry," She blurts out, her back resting against the headboard and hands situated awkwardly in her lap, "Its just-he called me, and was talking about how we should visit him, and it made me mad. He should be the one making an effort here, and I just couldn't help it, I just snapped-"
The look that he's giving her causes her to pause for a moment. It's so warm and open, and he doesn't look as though he's mad at her, much to her surprise. Instead, its a look full of love, and it almost takes her breath away.
"Hey, you don't have to apologise," Jackson assures her, his hand coming up to push a strand of hair out of her face, "I love that about you - the fact that you care so much? It means everything to me, and I know that you're not the kind of person to yell unless it's justified."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah, and you're right - he should be the one making an effort here. He probably deserved it."
"I'm sorry that he doesn't."
"Now what did I say about apologising, huh?" Jackson says softly, his hand moving down to lightly tickle her ribs for a moment, causing her to let out a giggle. Anything to bring back that smile.
She manages to put her serious face back on for a moment before speaking again, "I know...I just-its his loss. You're amazing, and Harriet's amazing, and he's the one missing out."
"And you're a big part of the reason we're both so amazing. We're lucky to have you."
She smiles at him genuinely, finding herself melting at his words - all the frustration and the anger of the day seemingly forgotten. She gets comfortable again, leaning over just enough to give him a slow and sweet goodnight kiss. They were both lucky to have each other.
