"James," Remus called, staring at the dog that was sitting calmly on his bed.

James poked his head out of the bathroom, his toothbrush sticking out of his mouth. "Wha'shup?" he asked, a small stream of toothpaste rolling down his chin.

"Why is there a giant black dog sitting on my bed?" Remus asked. He watched as James' eyes widened and he turned sharply towards the dog.

"Nofing!" James disappeared into the bathroom again, and reappeared a few moments later toothbrush and toothpaste free. "It's nothing, I was just practicing my Illusions! Doesn't it look great?" he said hurriedly. "Anyway, I think Peter was looking for you in the common room, it was something really important, or so he said." James walked towards Remus and ushered him out of the dorm. "Don't worry, I'll make sure the illusion is gone by the time you get back." He smiled at Remus, then shut the door.

Remus stared at the closed door for a moment before stepping forward and pressing his ear against the door. James was acting strange, and Remus would figure out why.

"...are you doing? We're not supposed to practice while he's around." James' voice was muffled but Remus could still hear him.

The dog barked. It definitely wasn't an illusion.

"Shhh! Someone will hear you! Now change back."

The dog barked again; twice this time.

"I'm not kidding! Change back now." There was a long moment of silence. "You're insufferable!"

Remus stepped away from the door and shook his head. James was up to something, he was sure of that. He made his way down the stairs to the common room. Maybe Peter would know, and if not he would confront James about it later.

Peter was sitting in one of the armchairs by the fire, studying and chewing on the top of his quill. Remus hated it when he did that, surely it wasn't sanitary, but Peter always did that when he was thinking deeply.

"Pete, have you noticed James acting strange recently?" Remus asked. No need to ask what Peter needed; Remus was sure that was just an excuse made up by James to get him to leave.

"Strange? Not really. Why?" Peter asked. He scrawled a few more words onto his parchment.

"I just walked into our dorm to find a giant black dog sitting on my bed and when I asked James about it he kicked me out of the dorm."

Peter's eyes widened, just like James' had. "I… I'm sure it was just some transfiguration practice James was doing and he was embarrassed about it," Peter said. He shut his book quickly. "I'll be right back, I… I forgot my quill upstairs."

Remus began to say that Peter was holding his quill in his hand, but Peter was already halfway across the common room. So Peter was in on it too. Chances were Sirius was, if the other two were, which means he didn't know about it because it was either incredibly stupid, dangerous, or both. He crossed the common room and climbed the stairs to their dorm. He could hear muffled shouting through the door, even without pressing his ear up against it. With one more deep breath to prepare himself for the chaos, he opened the door.

The dorm room immediately fell silent. The dog was now standing in the middle of the room, with James and Peter on either side of it, holding their wands.

"Alright," Remus said. "What are you two hiding, and where is Sirius?"

"Uhhh…" James turned towards Peter for support. "I'm not sure where Sirius is, I haven't seen him in a while."

"Maybe, he's…"

"Maybe you should just tell me since I'll figure it out soon anyway," Remus said.

Peter and James looked at each other again, and James sighed. "He's right here."

"He's what?" Remus asked. He looked at Peter, who was staring at James open mouthed.

"James, what about the plan?" Peter asked.

"Well, he's going to figure it out eventually, and we could honestly use his help right now. I think Sirius is stuck," James said. He turned to face Remus. "Sirius, Peter, and I are working on becoming animagi so we can go out with you on the full moon." He gestured towards the dog. "This is Sirius' animagus form, but Peter and I haven't successfully transformed yet."

Remus stared at them blankly for several moments, almost not comprehending what James had said. "That's not Sirius," he said. Surely they weren't that stupid.

The dog barked and then, in one smooth motion turned into Sirius.

"I got it!" Sirius said. "I think the pressure to turn back was just too much, cause that was easy." He turned towards Remus, the smile slipping off his face. "You're not mad, are you?"

Remus stared at him for several moments longer. "You're idiots, and I definitely won't be letting you come with me; but no, I'm not mad."
