Not betad, the world of Who lost someone very important on the 3rd of June, we all found out on the 4th. When I got home from work, I knew I had to write something.
…
A noise she hasn't heard in nearly 60 years, makes Susan jump up and move as quickly as she can and opens up the door. "Where's my Grandfather, you're not him. You are too-" she looks him up and down. "Young."
"It is me, Susan. I have some sad news to tell you and invite you to say your goodbye."
"What do you mean?"
"Do you remember Chatterton."
"You mean Chesterton?" The Doctor nods his head as Susan beliefs who he says he is. "Why?"
"He passed away a few days ago," the Doctor lets a tear drop from his eyes.
"I have been here for almost 60 years."
"I know, and the last time I talked with Ian, he said if I could he would want you at his funeral. He loved you like a daughter, Susua. So did Barbra."
"How's she doing?"
"Ian lost her years ago."
"How many?"
"In his life, almost 30."
"That's too long. It's almost the same amount that I have been without David."
"Susan, I want to make sure I get to the funeral."
"Right, let me tell my Grandson I'll be back later." She lets him in before calling her grandson. She heads into a small bedroom and finds something to wear. The two make their way into the TARDIS. "It's different."
"Susan, it's been many centuries. I have changed, I have loved, and I have lost."
"Okay?" He smiles sadly, not happy he has lost another old friend. "I assume we are going to the 21st century?"
"We are, June 2024." Once the TARDIS lands he goes to the doors and stops.
"Grandfather?"
"I have lost too many people. I biregnerated recently, to heal after everything I have learned since you left, but I don't know if I can do this. He was one of the first to travel, you know."
"You forced him, just like I am about to force you to continue on right now." She takes his arm and opens the door to find an irate redhead.
"Doctor, you said you wouldn't be late."
"Look lady, my Grandfather is mourning someone he has known since his first regeneration, which by the sounds of it was centuries ago."
"No you look here, I knew Ian, and your Grandfather is making the eulogy."
"Donna, stop, this is my Granddaughter Susan. She knew Ian as long as I did. She didn't get a chance to say goodbye before I forced her to stay in the future so she could live a long happy life." The Doctor looks on as more are gathering. He sees the sad eyes of many that he has known. Susan rubs his shoulder, not used to seeing the sensitive side.
"Come on Grandfather, introduce me to those that care about you."
"Susan, Donna is my best friend, well one of them. She's just loud and opinionated and will let others know when they are in the wrong about anything." He steps in front of the crowd as Susan sits next to a couple, the man hands a tissue to the woman.
"I hate crying."
"I know you do Ace; on occasions like this it's ok to show your vulnerable side. We just lost a friend. A great man." He wraps his arm around her shoulders as she lays her head on his.
"Ian Chatterton or Chersterfeild is what I always called him. When I first met him, I wasn't who I was. Both he and his departed wife followed my Susan to an abandoned junk yard. They were worried about Susan and just entered the TARDIS. I spent the next two years traveling with them. Half the time arguing with Ian. When we encountered the Daleks for the third time, they had a chance to go home. Back to Shoreditch, and they took it. Thanks to them I took more people with me and opened up the TARDIS to centuries of love and laughter and fun. Ian and Barbra had kids, grandkids and great grandkids. All grew up with stories with the mad man in a police phone box that was blue. Ian was one of the best men I knew. First and foremost was a teacher. He was great at it too. May Ian Chesterton forever rest in peace." The Doctor stops talking and steps to the side and moves to sit next to Susan, he sees that all of his friends have paired off and each one is either laying their head on someone's shoulder while the other person has their arms around their shoulders. Trying to be a comfort while they are sad themselves. Once the last person speaks, the Doctor along with a few others go to the coven and lift it up.
Hours later once the Doctor and Susan approach the TARDIS, "Professor," Susan raises an eyebrow.
"Nickname, Ace, how are you doing?"
"Ok, do you know what this is," she hands him a paper.
"Ian with one of his grandkids came up to me a few months ago asking how he would make it so that some of his money would go to a good cause. I told him about your charity, it made Ian smile knowing someone that did that. He also remembered how many of you are activists."
"Ian was great to all of us," Ace looks to her side with a sad smile on her face to the man next to her. "Many of us listened to any of his advice."
"Grandfather, I would like to get home."
"You're Susan aren't you?"
"I am."
"I'm Ace, he told me about you when I was younger."
"That's nice, Grandfather, I would like to get home now. Your family is here, mine is in the future." The two get back in the TARDIS.
"Susan."
"What."
"What was that for, you have been gone for decades; I only agreed to say goodbye to Ian."
"Susan, each and every one of you has taught me to be more human. I still have many moments of course, but I learn."
"I also just want to see my family."
"Ok," the Doctor moves to the console, "old girl this is one time you have to get us back at the right time."
Once they land Susan says a goodbye before rushing out. The Doctor looks around his TARDIS and makes his way to a room that has a machine in it. He turns it on to watch through Ian's life.
The End
