Author's note: This is my first story so please don't be mean but please give me recommendations to fix things. This is going to be a world building story based in Fallout 3 post main story after the activation of Project Purity and all the obvious good karma decisions made. The Brotherhood of Steel will be a little more than likely a little of OOC and a any changes to that happen before the story will take noted down below.
Key Changes (Please Read): I'm not going to change anything else if I do. I will make a note of it in a later chapter then change it and update it so old and new readers know but I'll try to keep it to these changes and only these changes. Which means Catherine still dies after giving birth to the Lone Wanderer.
The Lone Wanderer got the G.E.C.K way earlier in the story which the caused Enclave to be destroyed earlier in the story by a similar situation in which led to the capture of the Lone Wanderer and them Logic bombing Eden causing him to self-destruct himself and the Raven Rock while also accidently leaking key locations due to overload to his systems and spouting everything with little members left to mount a hostile takeover of the Jefferson Memorial before James convinced Madison Li with the G.E.C.K to head to the Jefferson Memorial which leads to James and Janice Kaplinski to live instead of dying.
Chapter 1: A New Project
Standing and celebrating outside of the Jefferson Memorial watching as clean water is being pumped by Project Purity are Madison Li, James, the rest of the scientists, and Zachary, James's Son. James looks up to the sky with some tears running down his cheek and says so that the whole group can hear "Look Catherine, the dream you wanted to achieve has finally come true. Project Purity is a success it's making clean water for the wasteland." Everyone else also looks up at the sky and takes in the accomplishment after a little over 20 years the project the scientists worked on finally is achieving what they had set out for it to do. While Zach was thinking of how he helped complete what his mother wanted to do before passing away shortly after giving birth to him 19 years earlier. "So, what do we do next? You know now that all that work, we started all those years ago, is finally complete." Madison Li says. Zach looks around and gains a look of one who is in deep thought and contemplation. James, noticing this speaks up and asks Zach "What has you thinking so hard Zach?" Zach looks up well through my travels in my wasteland I have seen who hard it was for food and water and well we got the water situation figured out but people are going to still have a hard time for food so it would be a good idea to get farms and other things set up but the issue is where to set up this idea I had." Everyone looks at him and think of this while Janice spoke up "Well Zach as the team's botanist I could help you with that we can try and get some form of agriculture set up but where would we set up and what about Purity, we would need people to maintain and watch it to make sure it doesn't fail." James spoke up on this "Madison and I can stay and watch over purity if anyone else wants to stay and help it would be nice and we could stay in contact with a ham radio if we can get the Brotherhood of Steel to lend us one." As James said he looked pensive. Zach spoke up "I can talk to Lyons when I next go to meet up with her. Some of us can go and talk to her and discuss this with her cause I won't lie, we will need their help with protecting both Purity and this new Endeavor. They may have technology that may be useful for this next project of ours." Zach looks around and nods "Okay those that are going get ready to head to the Citadel and bring any documents that would be helpful." With that said everyone went into the Jefferson Memorial besides Zach and James while they waited for those that were going with them to the Citadel. They looked at each other and father and son give each other a brief hug then separated, James asked "Do you have an idea what you will want to call this endeavor son?" "I have a good idea and will bring it up in the meeting" Zach said, he got a nod in return from his father. Not too much later the duo sees Janice and Elliot, the Biologist of their group come out of the memorial with Elliot having a 10mm on his hip and a messenger slung around his shoulder while Janice carries a briefcase and a small backpack. Without asking the next question they both nod towards the father and son duo and they head out towards the Citadel, headquarters of the Brotherhood of Steel here in the Capital Wasteland.
The group would be lying if they said the journey between the memorial and the Citadel was a relaxing one with the worry of running into a super mutant or raiders, thankfully they only had a couple close encounters. Upon reaching the Citadel they stopped outside the entrance to the complex to take a minute to take a breather while they wait for the guards to check their stuff besides Zach since he still was technically a part of the Brotherhood. Once they were inside the Citadel's main area they started to relax while Zach is leading the group to the room which they will be meeting with both the Lyons along with Head Scribe Rothchild. Once they reached the meeting room Zach was surprised to see the young Arthur Maxson, along with Bowditch and Elizabeth Jamerson. "I understand Bowditch and Elizabeth presence here but out of curiosity why is Maxson here?" Zach asks. Both Lyons look at each other and Sarah speaks "My father and I thought it would be a good learning experience he was kind of curious when he accidentally caught word of what is going to be happening here." Zach nods "Okay so I asked for a meeting here for as you may know that Project Purity is showing to be a success and that brings me here to bring something up to you and ask for your help." James continues on where his soon left off "Well first and probably the easiest is asking for the help of the Brotherhood to help bring security up at the Jefferson Memorial and won't give outright control of Purity but we can make a deal of making sure you get top priority of Zach's endeavor, along with daily reports and any help from any of our staff for projects you need help with if they are available and if not we will make sure you get their help as soon as they are available to help you." Both Lyons look at each other and look at Rothchild. Rothchild speaks up "I can agree that your scientists help would be extremely helpful with recovery, repairs, and maintenance of old tech and the possible development of new Orders in the scribe sect but why?" Zach speaks up and answers Rothchild's question "Well I want to start a new project called Project Seedling, which will entail the development of society by making sure that basic need are fulfilled by everyone at first in the Capital Wasteland and then spread out to other areas once Purity has worked its way through the irradiated water to make sure that water is good for drinking and growing. So, my next step is with Janice, Elliot, and some volunteers to set up a farm somewhere along the main river I want to try near the Megaton area but it may take some time for Purity to reach out there so I was hoping to finish setting things in this area with the Brotherhood and Purity and make sure communications can be set up on our end between Seedling, Purity and the Brotherhood to make sure you know and one request is your help in acquiring Ham Radios with either you having spares or help going out and finding one at a military installation that can be fixed up." After Elder Lyons speaks up "With the help you have given us between Liberty Prime and the Enclave we will help where possible where it comes to security. And more food would be helpful I won't lie the Brotherhood would be grateful this agreement, the radios on the other hand we can help you with, but we will require your James along with Madison Li as we need your medical knowledge and Ms. Li's technical know-how on a secret project will discuss in private a later date." James nods and thinks for a while.
After some time of giving thought James finally responds, "I will make sure Madison is onboard and that we will work on getting volunteers to help with those at Purity and Zach as an exercise to get used to doing this you will work on recruiting help for Seedling." Zach thinks for a moment "I have some that I can think word of warning one of them is a friendly Super Mutant that helped get the G.E.C.K for Purity from Vault 87 his name is Fawkes, and his strength will be invaluable to the project." Those that are part of the Brotherhood looked uncomfortable but just nodded then Sarah spoke "I know we can trust your judgement but are you 100% on this decision." Zach nodded "I trust Fawkes more than anything he has helped me out of a few situations including with super mutants." Owyn nodded and looked towards Bowditch can you make sure 2 ham radios are brought here and that they are secured for long distance travel. Bowditch nods and leaves the room to follow the Elder's order. James looks at Janice and nods towards Janice. She then opens the briefcase and pulls out the documents for Purity that she brought with her and hands a stack towards the Lyons and hands the other stack towards the Scribes. The group allows the Lyons and the Scribes to read over the documents once they have finished, they look towards each other and discuss something secretly between the 4 of them.
While all this time Maxson is sitting in the corner watching. Zach goes over to Maxson and holds his fist out to him "Been while since I saw you last has advice help you since." Maxson bumps Zach fist with his own and looks him the eyes "Y-yeah my stuttering is slowly going away, and I've been able to do better in my training now." Zach nods "That's good to hear Maxson, looks like I should be getting back to the meeting." He says as he notices the Lyons and Rothchild are now done discussing and he moves back to stand next to his dad. "Well, it's a good thing we are having Ms. Li come to help we will need her help to set up a system to store the data you guys give us and to send more securely cause doing it in person runs a higher risk of someone else getting their hands on it." Everyone looks and nods along with this Elliot speaks up "We don't need to have it set up as soon you get the system figured out, but we will send word for when it would be good for Seedling to get the same system for data storage and sharing." Zach nods "I agree with Elliot it would be kind of hard to have much data to send probably in the beginning, but we will gather it and once we are the stage of needing it either Janice, Elliot, or myself will send the word out on the radio or I will come in person to let you know is that agreeable?" "Yes, this is agreeable is there anything else to discuss?" Owyn responds to Zach. The group looks between each other, and James speaks up, "Our group will be start being known as the Restoration Initiative just to make it easier in correspondence in the future and that people will know the work, we did how we worked with the Brotherhood to achieve our goals." The Brotherhood members look between themselves, and nod and Owyn speaks up "We recognize the Restoration Initiative as ally's and partners of the Brotherhood of Steel." Everyone stands up and the two group shake hands and do some small talk before those of the Restoration Initiative leave with the ham radios that Bowditch brought, and they head to the Jefferson Memorial with feelings of accomplishment and being proud that they were able to achieve what they came to do more.
End of Chapter notes: Okay so this was something I had running around in my mind, and I wanted to do something like this for a while and I couldn't decide between Fallout 3 or 4 for the setting. After discussion with my best friend MellowHero on Wattpad and Fanfiction and Nicccoll on AO3 I recommend reading his story Fusion and Iron. But we were talking and with his help finally decided with Fallout 3 since Project Purity and with other things that could actually help with rebuilding the world to a semblance of the old world. While the same could have been done with Fallout 4 I felt that since 3 takes place 10 years earlier and with the geographic location that the story takes it would have more of an impact on the story 4 I may do a different kind of story that would take place with 4 after I'm done with this one that would highlight the changes.
And I mentioned the geography and for those that are newish or as a hard of player to look into this type of info for a game Fallout 3 take place within 3 states and D.C. those states being Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania now that in of itself when compared to real life and where the Potomac runs makes for quite a bit of potential along with growth anyway this is ProfessorXLK signing off for now.
