Gandalf gets lost. Gandalf loses track of time. Gandalf seems to find adventure in obvious places, and so knows some things that are oddly specific to certain areas. Why does Gandalf lead the company besides the fact that Thrain gave him the map and Thorin is worse than he is? Maybe this.

Bilbo Baggins wondered what Gandalf was thinking. Oh well, Bag End would sort him out. His house did NOT approve of vandalism, thank you very much. That rune carved into his door learned it personally. Besides, it served the wizard right for not heeding the rumors about Bilbo and the Old Forest.

Thorin needed an army, as Dain refused to help. According to Thror's law, he would need a bride and an heir in order to rule as King under the Mountain. Gandalf's solution - to get help from the Maharajah of Rhun-Agar. Now all he had to do was marry the Maharajahs daughter, stick a baby in her, slay a dragon and kill the the orcs chasing him…Except his new bride has other ideas!
