Hey guys, here's chapter 2 of The Spectacular Spider-Vee. I think we all know what this chapter will be about. Here we go.
It was a new day, the day of the field trip. The school bus pulled up in front of the science museum, several students stepping out.
"So, Vee, ready to be bored to death for the next couple of hours?" Masha asked jokingly as she/they and Vee walked side by side.
"Actually, some stuff might sound interesting," Vee replied, "Although, if we get boring tour guide, that won't matter," she commented, she and Masha sharing chuckle.
Several minutes later, the class had gone through several exhibits of the museum. They had gone through the solar system exhibit, the exhibit that showed the evolution of human flight, and a few others. They even experimented with that glass ball thing with electricity inside of it that you see in movies that made your hair stand on end when you touch it. The exhibit that they were exploring now though was the spider exhibit. As Vee predicted, the tour guide was informative, but had a really boring voice.
The were over 20,000 species of spiders in the world. The tour guide explained how some jumped great distances to catch their prey. Some were super strong while others changed colors as a defense mechanism to hide from predators. The tour guide also informed them about other spider stuff. Vee actually found all this pretty interesting. Masha, on the other hand, was trembling a bit, looking a little pale.
"Hey, are you ok?" Vee asked, concerned for her friend.
"I… I don't do well with spiders," Masha replied.
"I thought you liked creepy stuff?" Vee raised an eyebrow.
"I do. Sadly, spiders aren't one of those things," Masha began, "A spider crawled into mouth once while I was sleeping when I was little and spiders have creeped me out ever since. I can handle looking at webs, but spiders themselves, with all those legs…" Masha shuddered, rubbing her/their arms in discomfort.
Vee placed a reassuring hand upon Masha's shoulder, giving her/them a supportive smile. Masha smiled back.
"And here we have a new display," the tour guide gestured to a case with 15 containers, "A group of scientists have created a new genome, combining the genetic information of the previous spiders we mentioned, along with a few extra abilities thrown in, into these genetically altered super spiders."
The super spiders were dark blue with red legs and were slightly bigger than most average spiders. As said before, these spiders had the strength and abilities of the other spiders combined. The tour guide had mentioned that these spiders were given additional abilities as well. What abilities those were was anyone's guess. There were 15 of these genetically altered bugs. Or, at least, there were…
"Um, there's only 14," Vee spoke.
"Excuse me?" the tour guide looked at her.
"One's missing," Vee pointed out.
The tour guide took a closer look and one was missing like Vee said.
"Huh. I guess the researchers are still working on that one," the tour guide said.
However, unknown to anyone, the spider in question descended from the ceiling on a strand of web. The spider landed somewhere no one would've guessed. It landed on the back of Vee's shoulder, the spider turning invisible the minute it made contact. The eight-legged critter then made its way across Vee's shoulder.
"Ok, class, time for lunch," Dr. Octavius told everyone as they headed somewhere else to eat.
"I hope that spider isn't loose somewhere. I do NOT want to get bitten by that thing," Masha said, wincing before joining the rest of the class.
Vee glanced for a moment at the empty container that once held the missing spider. She then walked off to join the rest of her class. That's when she felt a tickle run up the side of her neck, and then her cheek. The spider then made itself visible. It charged its fangs with electricity before biting down on Vee's cheek.
"Ah!" Vee yelped, smacking where she had gotten bitten. She looked at the floor and saw the missing spider, it being the thing that had bitten her.
"Vee?" Masha called out, getting the blonde's attention, "You coming?" she/they asked.
"Uh, yeah…" Vee replied, taking a step forward.
Vee then heard a crunching sound underneath her foot. She didn't need to look down to know she accidentally crushed and killed the spider. Vee glanced from side to side. She whistled innocently, kicking the now-dead spider underneath a nearby cabinet.
Vee's House…
Vee stepped through the front door, getting home from school. She had gotten a text from her mom earlier saying that she'd be home later than usual from the vet clinic. This meant Vee had the house to herself for a few hours. Vee climbed the stairs, stepping into her room.
Normally, she'd get right to doing her homework when she got home. However, ever since the spider bite from earlier, she's been feeling a little uneasy. Luckily for her, she didn't have any homework today. She checked herself out in the mirror and saw that the spider bite had swollen. She really hoped that spider wasn't venomous.
Suddenly, Vee felt her eyes grow heavy. Feeling the need to rest, Vee began to strip down. Normally, she'd just put on the short-sleeved nightshirt that she slept in at night. Right now, though, she felt so warm, she just stripped down to nothing but her black bra and panties. Vee climbed into bed, placing the blanket over herself as she shut her eyes. Perhaps a little nap would help her feel better.
Vee found herself glaring down at her sister. It was at her old school in Gravesfield.
"I don't need you babying me, Luz. Just because you're older than me by a few minutes, doesn't mean you can tell me what do!" Vee shouted.
"Vee, I'm just trying to—"
"Just stay out of my life!" Vee cut her sister off, pointing a finger at her before walking away.
"Vee…" Luz muttered her twin's name.
The scene flashed, changing to Luz in a hospital bed, her torso and part of her face covered in blood. Camila was just outside the room, crying her eyes out, unable to look at the state her eldest daughter was in.
"Luz…" Vee sobbed, tears welling in her eyes, "Luz, I'm sorry," she told her sister, tears rolling down her cheeks as she held Luz's closest hand in both of her own.
"V- Vee…" Luz weakly started.
There was another flash, causing Vee to jolt awake, sweat covering her face and body. She panted heavily. She had that dream again. It been almost a year and she was still having that dream. It made sense though. Her mom had often told her not to blame herself for what happened to Luz. How could she not though? If she hadn't gotten into that argument and yelled at her, Luz might…
Vee sighed. She glanced out the window and saw the sky was brighter than it was when she had taken her nap. Reaching for her phone, she turned it on to check the time, her eye widening upon seeing just what time it was. 7 o'clock in the morning. Had she seriously been sleeping for more than 12 hours? Well, be that as it may, bug bite or not, she never felt more well-rested. Minus the brief nightmare, of course.
Vee threw the covers off herself and climbed out of bed. She was about to put her clothes on, when she noticed something in the mirror door. She approached the mirror, getting a better look at herself in her reflection. Vee tilted her head from side to side to make sure wasn't seeing things.
She brought her hands up to her chest, giving it a small squeeze. For some reason, her bra felt a little tighter. Had her breasts gotten bigger? Vee brought her hand down to her butt and noticed how firm and well-toned it felt. She smiled at herself. She never noticed before, but was starting to get a nice figure.
"Vee? Are you up yet?" Camila called from downstairs.
"Uh, yeah. I'll be down in a minute!" Vee replied, still smiling doing a pose in the mirror with her hands behind her head.
Midtown High…
Camila pulled up in front of the school. She turned the dial, shutting off the car radio when it talked about the police stopping a bank robbery.
"I always forget how much crime there is in New York compared to Gravesfield…" Camila muttered to herself. She then turned to Vee, taking her daughter's face into her hands, "Hmm. Looks like the swelling from that bug bite has gone down," she said while examining Vee's face.
When Camila had gotten home yesterday, she had found Vee asleep in bed. Being a veterinarian/doctor, she took the liberty of treating the spider bite the moment she saw it on her daughter's cheek. Fortunately, they had everything they needed at home. It paid off since, as Camila said, the swelling had gone down.
"Are you sure you're well enough to go to school?" Camila asked with her usual motherly concern.
"I'm fine, Mom. Don't worry," Vee replied while putting her sunglasses on.
Camila chuckled then planted a kiss upon Vee's forehead.
"Be sure to drink plenty of water, ok?" Camila told her, caressing her cheek.
"Si, Mama," Vee nodded before getting out of the car.
Lunch. It was the time in the middle of the day where you'd fill your belly with something delicious. Most people would fill their bellies with some of their favorite foods. School cafeteria food, however, was anything but delicious. Vee cringed, picking at the disgusting garbage that passed for food at this school. Were these supposed to be mashed potatoes? Either get better cafeteria food or get better chefs that actually know how to cook.
"Hey Vee," Vee looked up to see Masha, along with three other kids.
"Oh, hey Masha," Vee smiled at her/them.
"You don't mind if a few of my other friends join us for lunch, do you?" Masha as she/they and the other kids took a seat across from Vee.
"Uh, no, go ahead," Vee said, looking down at her food, picking at her food.
"This is Beth, Lance, and Vincent," Masha gestured to each of her other friends respectively.
Beth was a plus-sized girl with short, red hair and glasses. She wore a blue and white striped shirt, black jean shorts that were torn at the bottom, and red and white sneakers. She also had a black wristband on one of her arms and a choker around her neck.
Lance was a somewhat tall kid with dark skin and black hair. He wore a purple shirt, jean shorts, and sandals. The funny part was, his hair had bangs that covered his eyes. It often made people wonder how he could even see.
Vincent was a rather scrawny kid. He wore a gray, unzipped hoodie, olive green cargo pants, and navy slip-on shoes. He also wore thick, rectangular glasses.
"Hey," Vee greeted shyly.
"And this is my newest friend, Vee," Masha introduced her to the others.
"Hey/Hi/S'up," they all greeted Vee in unison.
"How are you liking the cafeteria food?" Masha asked playfully, noticing the cringe upon Vee's face when she took the bite of the food.
"Bleh!" Vee spat the food out, "Ugh, it's awful!" she said, pushing the tray away.
"Heh. Yeah, Thursdays are the worst days to get food from the cafeteria," Beth chuckled.
"The food served this day of the week is a scientific mystery. It's borderline toxic," Vincent said while adjusting his glasses.
"A bit of advice, dude. Pack a lunch on Thursdays," Lance informed her.
"Noted," Vee said flatly.
"Here, girl, have one of the sandwiches I packed," Masha pulled a sandwich out of her/their lunch bag, handing Vee a ham sandwich with lettuce, tomato and mayo.
"Thanks," Vee said, taking a bite.
Huh. Two days here and Vee has already made four friends. Maybe living in a new state and going to a new school wasn't so bad. She took another bite of the sandwich Masha gave her, but then noticed she still had the fork from her crappy cafeteria school lunch in her hand. Vee tried to toss it aside… only for it to somehow still stick to her hand. Vee set her sandwich aside to pull the fork off with her free hand. When she did though, she found it several sticky strands connected her wrist to the fork. Vee yanked the fork, finally removing it from her hand.
Those sticky strands looked and felt familiar. Were those… spider webs? Vee looked at the others. Luckily for her, none of them noticed. She flicked her wrist, her middle and ring fingers giving a small curl inward. To her shock, more webs shot out of her wrist, clinging to the food tray that she set aside. Vee released a small gasp under her breath. Thinking fast, Vee leaned over the tray, keeping anyone from seeing… whatever it was that was going on with her right now.
"Vee?" Vee turned her head to Masha, "What're you doing?" she/they asked, she/they and the others looking at her questionably.
"Oh, uhh… I'm just, uh… making sure no one steals this. Wouldn't want anyone to get food poisoning. Heh heh," Vee replied awkwardly with a nervous chuckle, "Hey, what's that?!" she pointed in a random direction.
The others turned in the direction Vee pointed. This gave a window to get rid of the web by yanking her arm behind her. This worked. However, this caused the tray to be sent flying across the cafeteria and hit a girl with a pink streak in her blonde hair.
"There's nothing there, Vee," Masha replied, turning back to face her.
"Oh. I guess I was just seeing things," Vee said with a roll of her eyes.
Masha and the others decided to shrug that off and let it slide.
"Noceda!" they all heard a voice call Vee out.
Vee and her friends turned around to see the blonde girl that got hit with the tray. The girl's head and top were covered in all the food that used to be on Vee's tray. She was wearing a cheerleader's outfit, the outfit being made of the school's colors, green and white. This was Amanda Berkeley, the captain of the cheer squad. To say she was pissed off about Vee's recent action was an understatement.
When she saw the look in Amanda's eyes, Vee yelped and quickly hid under the table. The Dominican girl curled herself up into a ball, hugging her knees to her chest. Her heart was beating like crazy, and not in the good way. It was moments like this where she preferred to stay in the background. It was moments like this where she wished she were invisible.
Amanda popped her head underneath the table, making Vee jump.
"Where is she?" Amanda asked Masha and the others as popped out from under the table.
"Vee?" Masha looked underneath the table and saw no one there, "Where did she go?" she/they looked at her/their friends. She then looked at the head cheerleader, "Look, just back off, Amanda," Masha told her sternly.
Meanwhile, underneath the table, Vee looked around with confusion. She was right there yet everyone was wondering where she was, like she had left. She was right there underneath them, it's not like she was invisible or anything. Vee looked down at her feet… only to realize that they weren't there. In fact, her whole body wasn't there. She could see through herself.
Holy crap, she was invisible! Literally invisible!
Well, that'll certainly make it easier to escape. While Amanda and Masha were arguing, Vee crawled from underneath the table, and then made a mad dash for the cafeteria doors. Vee ran through the halls while looking at herself. She was invisible. How was this possible?
Vee leaned against a wall, breathing heavily. She saw the door to a classroom right next to her, opened it, and went inside. As fate would have it, the classroom she was in was Dr. Octavius' class. Fortunately for Vee, the doctor was probably in the teacher's lounge, so she wasn't around.
Vee released the hold on the doorknob. She placed her other hand on the wall, hanging her head a bit. She tried to remove her hand from the wall, but couldn't. It was like she was actually sticking to the wall itself. She placed her free hand on the wall, along with one of her legs, and used enough force to pull her first hand off the wall. Vee groaned in relief, only to realize her other hand was now sticking to the wall.
"Damn it. Stop sticking!" Vee said while placing her first hand back on the wall, both hands now sticking.
Vee groaned. Wanting to end this, she placed both feet on the wall and pushed against it. With a few grunts, Vee successfully kicked herself off the wall. However, this launched her into the air right into… the ceiling.
"The ceiling?! Come on!" Vee groaned. "Stop sticking! Stop sticking!" she muttered while crawling around. If she weren't freaking out, she'd find this kind of cool.
Vee pushed herself against the ceiling, successfully unsticking herself from it. She screamed as she fell to the floor, hitting the teacher's desk with a thud. Vee groaned in slight pain, although… it wasn't as painful as she'd expected. It still hurt though. That's when a strong smell filled her nostrils.
Vee turned her head to the other side of the desk and saw that two beakers had fallen over. One was filled with a green liquid while the other was filled with a purple liquid. The two liquids eventually met in the middle, making Vee's eyes go wide. A second later, the combined liquid created a small explosion, a cloud of smoke forming. The smoke quickly cleared, Vee coughing as her face was covered in soot.
Still invisible, Vee hopped off the desk and stepped out of the empty classroom. A minute later, Dr. Octavius came in and saw her desk covered in soot and chemicals.
"Who spilled chemicals on my desk?!" Dr. Octavius shouted.
Meanwhile, Vee made her way to the nearest restroom. A couple of girls stepped out of the stalls, gasping at what they saw. Paper towels were being removed from their dispenser on their own. Not only that, but one of the sinks had turned on its own as well. The two girls then ran out of the bathroom, screaming.
In actuality, it was Vee that did all that. She wet the paper towels with hot water, and then used them to wipe her face and sunglasses clean of the soot. Vee shut off the water and sighed to herself.
"Ok, take it easy. Get a grip, girl," Vee told herself. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, "Cálmate."
Vee inhaled deeply. She then hummed her favorite song to herself. Listening to her favorite song, even when hummed, often helped her to relax. At this moment, it even slowed down her thumping heart back to its normal pace. Vee opened her eyes and, to her relief, when she looked in the mirror, she was visible again.
"Oh, gracias a dios! (Oh, thank god!)" Vee sighed with relief.
Vee tossed the paper towels into the trash while stepping out of the bathroom. She checked her phone and saw there was a good 15 minutes left for lunch. She walked over to the water fountain, taking a quick drink. All this freaking out and sticking to stuff had left her parched.
At that small moment, she felt something. For some reason, Vee's head started to tingle, more specifically in the back. A chill ran up her spine as the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. As if her body were moving on its own, Vee suddenly bent over backwards. It was just in time to dodge an apple that had been thrown from the side.
"Whoa, what the hell?" Vee looked at the discarded fruit that rolled down the hall. She looked in the direction that the fruit had been thrown from.
"You thought that was funny, Noceda?" Amanda asked, that same glare from earlier. It didn't help that one of the football players was at her side.
Luckily for Vee, Masha and the others ran up to her, standing by their new friend's side.
"Dude, leave her alone," Lance spoke up.
"We keep telling you, it was an accident!" Masha added, placing a hand on Vee's shoulder.
"Her being in the nurse's office is what's going to be an accident," Amanda replied.
With a snap of her fingers, four more football players came up from behind Masha and the other, restraining them. Vee was then shoved from behind, toward Amanda and the other football player. Amanda looked at the remaining football player and nodded. The football player sighed and approached Vee.
"Sorry, nothing personal," he whispered sincerely to the Dominican girl.
The football player put his fists up. Unable to break from the other football players' restraints, Vee's friends could only watch. The football player threw his fist at Vee… only for Vee to sway to the side, dodging the attack. The football player threw a few more punches, but Vee managed to dodge all of them. He swung his arm to try and hit her in the jaw, only for Vee to avoid it by bending over backward, surprising her friends, as well as the other football players.
When Vee rose back up, she was greeted with another swing of the football player's arm. This time though, Vee raised her own arm, blocking it. The football player gave several swings, but Vee blocked each one. On the last swing, Vee managed to grab the outer side of the Football player's arm, unintentionally giving it a small twist as the football player held back a scream.
"Uhh… nothing personal?" Vee said with an unsure tone before throwing her fist, hitting the football player right in the chest.
Vee thought the punch would've just knocked the wind out of him or something. However, did more than that when it sent him flying and skidding across the floor. The football player came to a stop at Amanda's feet.
Everyone looked at Vee with shock. However, no one was more shocked than Vee herself. She had never fought anyone a day in her life. Did she really just do that? Everyone watched as the football player got back up.
"Come on, guys. This girl's a freak," Amanda said, walking away with the football players releasing Vee's friends and joining her.
Freak. That stung a little. Granted, it wasn't the first time she was called that and she was used to it by now, but it still stung occasionally.
"Vee, that was awesome!" Lance beamed.
"Yeah, not bad, girl," Masha chimed in, "Do you want me to take care of Amanda after school?" she/they offered, eagerly popping her/their knuckles.
"No, that won't be necessary," Vee said, having had enough excitement for one day. That's when the school bell rang, signaling for everyone to head to their next class, "Come on. We don't want to be late," she told her friends.
As they headed to their respective class, looked down at her hands. Turning invisible, sticking to walls, sensing incoming danger, not to mention those webs. Those sounded like the abilities a spider would have. That spider that bit her the other day, it was one of those 15 genetically-altered spiders. Had its bite given her spider powers or something?
If it had then was definitely something she'd have to look into.
That's the end of chapter 2. Looks like Vee has gotten her spider powers. I the power origin scene, as well as the fight scene—if you can even call it that—on the first Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movie. However, the spider that bit Vee is kind of like the one that bit Miles Morales (I like Peter Parker, but Miles Morales is my personal favorite). That being said, this will probably the first and last chapter that'll be similar to the movies. From here on out, I'll be doing original chapters.
I get help for this chapter from my friend I Write Big.
