Ms. Figaro asked several questions, such as when her last period was and the number of sexual partners she had.
Linka answered all of the doctor's questions with a sense of numb foreboding; it did her little good to lie now.
Desperate to confess, Linka wished she had told her parents earlier. She had no idea how they would react.
"Who is the father of your child?"
Linka's eyes widened and her heart leapt to her throat, "I don't...exactly know who the dad is...I only met him once at a school sporting event...
Ms Figaro nodded jotting something down on before asking her next question, "do you know how old the father is? Was he a fellow student or an adult?"
"He...was from a different school...he was my age...please I don't want to get him involved; it was my idea", Linka whimpered softly.
Hot tears of shame poured down her cheeks, and Linka sobbed into her hand while Ms. Figaro stopped to comfort her by rubbing her back.
"You are not in trouble, Linka, but the father still has responsibility towards this child. You don't want to be the only one taking care of this child while the father runs free.", Ms. Figaro's voice was soft but firm.
Linka hiccuped, as her sobs left her breathless. She couldn't take any more of this questioning, and her head was now aching horribly.
Ms. Figaro stopped asking questions and prepared some children's Tylenol and apple juice for Linka. Linka took the medicine and drank the juice, thankful for the cool, sweet nectar.
A nurse knocked on the door, leading Linka's mom into the room. Time seemed to stand still for a minute.
Rita Loud's eyes were filled with sorrow, her gaze was firmly focused on Linka's protruding belly. She was obviously pregnant, and further along than Rita had ever imagined.
How oblivious were they? Rita raged internally, wondering how they had missed something so significant in their only daughter's life.
As a woman Rita should of noticed the changes in Linka's body, but she hadn't even known the girl had gotten her first period.
How stupid they were...
Rita said nothing to Linka at the moment, but her mom's disappointment was more than obvious. Linka was desperate for the older woman to say something - anything - even if it meant yelling. Anything would be better than the terrible silence that filled the room.
Rita turned to Ms Figaro and started speaking, " What type of supplements do you recommend we use? I know she is farther along and want to make sure that she is getting the proper nutrients".
Ms. Figaro nodded and took out a prescription pad, jotting down some vitamins and supplements for Linka to take during her pregnancy.
Linka was examined once more and Ms Figaro set the date for her next appointment two weeks later, after that she sent Linka and Rita on their way home.
The ride home for Linka was spent in tense silence as they stopped at a pharmacy to get the vitamins and finally at the burping burger for lunch.
The whole time Linka was just waiting for her mom to unload on her, however the only time they spoke was when her mom asked if she wanted extra pickles.
The anticipation was killing Linka, after they ate Linka gathered her courage and tried to talk to her mom. They were at a red light when Linka broke the silence.
" Mom...I'm really sorry...for not being honest with you earlier"...
Rita let out a sigh as she tried to calm, she couldn't even look at Linka at the moment. All she saw was Linka's rounded belly and then she remembered that her good girl was pregnant, barely even thirteen years old and she was already expecting.
Lynn didn't even know yet, Rita wasn't sure how she was going to break it to him but figured it would be best to do it once they got home.
" We are having a family meeting when we get home, I'm not happy with you at the moment. And we will definitely have a conversation regarding honesty, but what is done is done".
Linka bite the inside of her lips, she wanted to say more but her mom's tone left little room for arguing. She wished Lynn was here about right now, Linka was terrified about what was going to happen when they got home. If possible she wanted to keep Lynn's involvement with the pregnancy a secret.
She didn't want to drag Lynn down, and the thought of being separated terrified Linka. Lynn was more important to her than oxygen at this point.
