A Golden Afternoon

(Ayla's POV)

*I ran after Chris as best as I could, despite my size*

Ayla: Chris! Chris! Wait for me! *I soon lost him over the grass* Oh man. How am I supposed to catch up to him when I'm this size? *just then, butterflies that had pieces of bread for wings with butter spread on them flew past me* Wow. What strange butterflies.

*They landed on a leaf until that looked like a loaf of bread*

?:*off-screen* You mean Bread 'n Butterflies.

Ayla: Well, yeah. I suppose - Huh? *I turned around, but only saw giant flowers behind me* Who said - ? *just a tiny rocking horse with wings flew up to me* A horsefly. Or I guess I should say a rocking horsefly.

?:*off-screen* Naturally.

Ayla: Wait . . . Did you - ? *I turned to a red rose that had my Mom, Queen Aleena's, face on it* Okay. Now I'm just being silly. Flowers can't talk.

*Suddenly, the flowers came alive & started talking*

Red Rose (Queen Aleena): But if course we can talk, my dear.

Iris (Christina Cooper): If there's anyone worth talking to.

Daisy #1 (Amy): Or about.

*She giggled*

Pansies (Cream): And we sing, too.

Ayla: You do?

Tulip (Topaz): Oh, yes. Would you like hear tell it to the tulips?

Blue Bells (Francine): No, let's sing about us.

Violets (Helen): We know one about the sky violet.

Lily #1 (Lady Windermere): Oh no, not that old thing.

Lily #2 (Rouge): Let's go lovely lily of the valley.

Daisy #2 (Allegra): How about the daisy duet?

Hydrangea (Ella): Oh, she wouldn't like that.

*Mom tapped her music sheet stand with her baton*

Red Rose (Queen Aleena): Girls. We shall sing Golden Afternoon. That's about all of us. *I sat down on a rock* Sound your A, Lily.

*The flowers all warmed up their voices as Mom conducted the music. The Bread 'n Butterflies flew towards the tulips*

*Flowers singing*

Little bread-and-butterflies kiss the tulips

And the sun is like a toy balloon

There are get up in the morning glories

In the golden afternoon

There are dancing daffodils on the hillside

Strings of violets are all in tune

*I swayed along with the music*

Tiger lilies love the dandelions

In the golden afternoon

(The golden afternoon)

There are dog and caterpillars and the copper centipede

Where the lazy daisies love the very peaceful life they lead...

*Their yawns made me & Amy yawn too*

You can learn a lot of things from the flowers

For especially in the month of June

*White Rose (Lindsey Thorndyke) singing*

There's a wealth of happiness and romance

All in the golden afternoon

*Some of the flowers were played like instruments*

*Flowers singing*

All in the golden afternoon

The golden afternoon

*Ayla singing*

You can learn a lot of things from the flowers

For especially in the month of June

*The flowers were in awe of my voice*

There's a wealth of happiness and romance

All in . . .

*with Flowers*

The golden afternoon

*A thistle flower, who looked like my brother Manic, played some like drums before another daisy, that looked like Bartleby, crashed his hands together like cymbals. I clapped my hands*

Ayla: That was amazing!

Red Rose (Queen Aleena): Thank you, my dear.

Daisy #1 (Sonia): What kind of garden do you come from?

Ayla: I'm not from any garden.

Daisy #1 (Amy):*to Iris* Do you suppose she's a wildflower?

Ayla: I'm not a wildflower either.

Red Rose (Queen Aleena): And just what specie or genus are you, my dear?

Ayla: I'm not a flower at all. My name is Ayla.

Daisy #1 (Amy): Ever seen a Ayla with a blossom like that?

Iris (Christina Cooper): Come to think of it, did you ever see an Ayla?

Daisy #1 (Amy): Yes . . . and did you notice her petals? *she leaned close to me* What a weird color she has. *then she sniffed me* And she doesn't have a fragrance.

*One of the lilies leaned in to examine my legs*

Lily #2 (Rouge): Rather skinny, I'd say.

*A little rose bud at the big Rose's base spoke*

Rose Bud (Molly): I think she's lovely

*The big Rose covered it's mouth*

Rose (Queen Aleena): Quiet, bud.

Ayla: I'm telling you, I'm not a flower!

Iris (Christina Cooper): Ah-ha! Just as I suspected. *she leaned in to the rose* She's nothing but a common movable vulgaris.

Freesias (Lydia): Ohhh no!

Ayla: A common what?

Iris (Christina Cooper): To be quite honest . . . A weed!

Ayla: I'm not a weed either!

Yellow Tulip (Renée):*to the pink & purple tulips* Well, she wouldn't expect to admit it.

Purple Hyacinth (Maeve):*to the white Lily* Can you imagine?

*The Lily nodded*

Daisy #1 (Amy): Goodness!

Lily #1 (Lady Windermere): Don't go to seed here!

*Suddenly, the flowers started to push me out of the garden*

Rose (Queen Aleena): Please go away!

Pansies (Cream): We don't want weeds in our bed!

*I made my way through the garden, the snapdragons blared at me, the dandelions & tiger lilies roared & hissed at me, & a even a shaggy white flower dog barked at me*

Ayla: Alright, already! If you want me to go, then I'll go! But just know, if I was my full size, I'd pick all of you! That would teach you! *suddenly, two daffodils pushed a pink callus full of water, pouring it on me & making me go down a little river in a leaf boat. I heard the flowers laughing at me as I grabbed on to a stem to stop from floating away* "You can learn a lot of things from the flowers." Hmph! If you ask me, they can learn a few things about manners.

*Then I looked up & saw letters, that looked to be made of smoke*
