Chapter Twenty-Six

The break from classes came to her like a breath of fresh air. After the stress brought on by the Sports Festival- paired with a certain flame-hero, a moment out of a combative atmosphere was most welcome. Sesshoumaru had agreed, informing her that her individual lessons would also go on hold in order to give her a break. Given the progress she'd shown during the Sports Festival, he decided it was well-warranted. She was never one to disregard a blessing, and she intended to take full advantage of her time off from lessons in general.

However, just because it was a break from her lessons that didn't mean that peace and quiet were able to befall life at the shrine. It was the exact opposite. Things were as rowdy as ever- especially with her demon companions hanging around a bit longer.

As unruly as things got with everyone together like they were, it was nice having them present.

"Do you want me to go with you?"

Kagome paused by the front door upon hearing that question. Inuyasha stood by the doorframe, his long hair pulled back into a low ponytail. His sleeves had been rolled up and flour dusted across his cheeks from where her mother had pulled him to help her in the kitchen. Kagome smiled and shook her head.

"I shouldn't be long," she responded. "Mama just needs a few things from the store." In her hand was a list. It wasn't long, and Kagome was positive it wouldn't take her too long to go and get back. She knew she'd be out way longer if someone else went with her. So, it was just easier to go by herself. "Anyway, you're helping her already. I'm sure you helping her is more important."

He sighed, grumbling something under his breath as he conceded to her claim. Kagome could tell there were other things on his mind, and she gave him a curious look.

"Something wrong?" she asked.

"Nah," Inuyasha responded, shaking his head. Kagome saw through it, and he knew. He sighed and lifted a hand to rub a spot of flour off his face. They stood at a stalemate for a few seconds before her mother poked her head out around the corner.

"Oh, there you are!" Kun-Loon said, a smile on her face. She reached for Inuyasha's arm, tugging gently to lure him to the kitchen. "I need you to get something off the shelf in the cabinet if you don't mind."

"Oh… yeah, sure," Inuyasha responded, already turning. Before he walked off, he gave Kagome one last look. "Listen, if you're sure, then I'll trust you."

Kagome was able to pick up on the extra note in his voice, and her smile softened some.

In other words, he'd let her do what she thought was best, but if something went wrong, he'd be there for her in a flash.

She watched him follow her mother back to the kitchen, and she turned to slip through the front door.

"Right," she mused softly under her breath. "Thank you, Inuyasha."

"Okay, that should be the last of it…" Kagome mused softly, sparing a quick glance at the list. Once she'd marked everything off, she shoved it back into her pocket. Just as she was about to make her way home, a familiar figure calling out to her caught her attention.

"Oh, hey, look who it is."

Kagome turned, her blue eyes catching a pair that seemed to be too familiar to her own. Her surprise was fleeting as a sardonic smile came to replace her curious expression. "I'd ask what're the odds of crossing paths again, but I get the feeling I already know the answer to that."

A grin spread across Dabi's face as he shoved his hands in his pockets, giving her a once-over. "You're a clever girl."

She could recall every other time she'd seen him before, whether he'd interacted with her or not. She hadn't seen him lately, but that meant very little. "I suppose a better question would be what brings you to talk to me," she mused softly.

"Contrary to what you might be thinking, sometimes I just want to check in on you," Dabi responded. "Is that such a crime, little hero-in-training?"

Kagome arched a brow. "Not really, but I'm sure stalking is." Her tone was an unbothered one as she called him out on his habit. His first response was a laugh, but he never tried to deny her claim. After all, they both knew it was true.

"You call it stalking, I call it looking out for you," he responded. "Either way, it's one and the same."

Kagome glanced up at him, looking at his expression carefully. "I can't help but wonder why though," she stated. He matched her gaze, and she noted there was a desire to say something that flashed through his eyes. "What's so special about me that you wanna do something like that?"

"You're asking good questions," Dabi said. Despite that, he didn't give her an actual answer. "Let's not worry about that for now, though." A mild frown flashed across her face before it faded. "I saw you on your own and figured it was as good of a time as any to check in with you."

"So you have no other ulterior motives?" Kagome asked. Dabi glanced down at her, an emotion that she couldn't quite identify lingering in his eyes before he closed them with a sigh.

"Nah," he responded, lifting a hand to rub the back of his head. "Ain't promising nothing in the future, but for now that's all I wanted."

"I see," Kagome responded. In the back of her mind, she wondered when she'd have to swap from the light-hearted consideration for him into something more cautious. When he'd finally show his real intentions. She wasn't worried, but she was curious. The way he was right now, she couldn't anticipate him trying to cause her harm. "I'll be sure to be careful, then."

"That's a good idea for you," he responded. "See you around."

"Right," Kagome nodded. She watched as he walked off, his figure eventually getting lost among the rest of the population out that day. Her grip on the bag she held tightened.

She didn't know what it was about him, but she couldn't shake the familiarity she felt for him. With that familiarity, she was also filled with a strange sense of dread. She knew she shouldn't trust him, but that feeling of familiarity blinded her. It wasn't a good thing, she knew.

There was more to him, that much she knew.

For now, there were other things for her to worry about, however. She pushed the interaction with Dabi to the back of her mind as she started on her way home. She needed to get back before she was gone for too long.

Her days free from classes were spent mostly on recovery. She'd exhausted herself quite a bit during her matches, so having a chance to let herself recoup came as a relief. She recovered faster without having to worry about anything.

When she woke up the following morning, she promptly got a shower as she got ready for class. Once she'd gotten dressed, she stepped in front of the mirror as she removed the towel she had her hair wrapped up in. The semi-dried strands fell as she turned to discard the towel. When she looked back at her reflection, something strange caught her eye. She paused, her gaze focused on her visage looking back at her. After several seconds, she lifted a hand into her predominantly dark hair.

A strand of white among her normally raven hair stood out and caught her eye. It wasn't a lot, but it was enough to be noticed.

"Why…-?" Kagome couldn't keep her confusion from her voice as she examined the change to her hair. It hadn't been like that before she went to bed last night, had it? If it had, then she had somehow managed to miss it entirely. "Wait, no," she shook her head as thought it over a bit more. If it'd been like that last night, then Sesshoumaru would've noticed and mentioned it.

It was in a spot that was easily coverable with the rest of her hair, at least. Wordlessly, she fixed her hair, tucking the white strands out of sight. She gave herself a once-over before she finally turned, stepping out of the bathroom and making her way downstairs.

For now, she'd just worry about it later.

The rain was only getting worse as night swept over the city. Blaring car horns could be heard as people scurried about- trying to flee from the rain before they ended up being completely doused.

All but her, it seemed.

Huddled in her raincoat was a small, calico cat shivering from the rain as she carefully made her way down the street. A harsh gust of wind nearly knocked her over, but she was able to steady herself before her umbrella got knocked from her hand.

She hadn't made it much further before she passed an alleyway. Something caught her attention from the corner of her eye, and she slowed to a halt. A figure crouched on the ground made her freeze entirely, her grip on her umbrella growing the slightest bit tighter.

Despite everything Kun-Loon had told her, Kagome found her making her way down the alleyway until she'd reached the figure. He didn't react at first, not until she'd stopped in front of him.

She'd noticed the cut on his face, and she frowned. She reached into the pocket of her elementary uniform skirt before she pulled out a damp bandage, which she promptly held out to him.

"Oh…! Here, Mister!"

It was what drew his attention to her, red eyes behind a mask lifting to glower at her. There was a hint of cruelty that she either ignored or missed entirely. Either way, it soon faded when he focused on the bandage she offered.

"This is no place for a little girl to be," came his response. He didn't move, and Kagome tilted her head to the side.

"Buyo got lost and I had to find him," she stated in an obvious tone. At the mention, the kitten perked his head from her raincoat, mewing loudly. "But…." she looked the strange man over, a frown on her face. "You don't have an umbrella, do you?" she asked, noting the lack of protection he had against the cold rain. She had her raincoat hood pulled over her head, and she held out her umbrella without a second thought, a smile on her face. "Here! You can have mine!"

He didn't say anything in response at first as he gradually moved to stand up. When he did, he easily towered over her smaller form. He watched her, almost as if he was gauging something. After a second, he tilted the umbrella back until it was back over her head.

"Tell me, little one," he started, voice gravelly and quiet. "Do you wish to be a hero when you grow up?"

Kagome paused, blinking owlishly as she processed his question. "A hero?" she repeated, tilting her head to the side. She thought back to her father's berating words, words of how she could never stand to be a hero. "I…-" she glanced down, blue eyes taking on a faint sheen of tears. "I only want to be kind."

Her response caused silence to befall the space between them. He watched her, wordless as a loud boom of thunder shook the skies.

"Kind, huh?" he repeated. There was something thoughtful to his tone, as if he was carefully pondering her response and the weight those words held. After a moment, he turned and started walking down the alleyway. "Do yourself a favor and go home."

The rainy atmosphere made the trip to school dreary. She hadn't walked with Shippo like she usually would. Sesshoumaru had something that required his presence, so he'd already been there by the time she ever left the shrine.

As she was putting her water-logged things up, a figure in the corner of her eye caught her attention. She slowed some as she waited for him to turn and catch her eye. When he did, he froze upon noting her attention on him.

"Are things okay, Iida?"

She had heard of his brother's condition after being injured by a villain during the Sports Festival, but she hadn't had time to ask him about it before he left. He realized what she was asking about quickly, and he managed a nod.

"I appreciate your concern, Higurashi," he responded. She was keen to note something extra in his tone, but she neglected to call him on it initially. "I'm sorry for causing worry, but, yes, things are okay."

She was quiet for a few seconds as she gauged his response and the expression on his face. She knew asking about it too much might get the wrong response, so she opted to take his initial response at face value. She nodded, stepping around him as she started on her way to their classroom.

"If you say so," she responded. Her words were enough to reveal that she'd seen through his response. He looked at her, her bright blue catching his deeper ones as she glanced over her shoulder. "You can come to me if you need to vent to someone," she stated. "So don't hesitate if you need it."

She'd said it so casually, yet it was comforting all the same. Iida nodded, seeming to take her concern to heart. "Right, I'll keep that in mind."

The conversation that filled the room that morning all correlated to the recently finished Sports Festival. The lively conversations soon died down as the door opened, and in walked Aizawa. The first thing she noticed was the lack of all his bandages- he looked good as new.

"Good morning," he said as he moved to stand in front of the room at his desk. After they had responded. "Today we're going to have a special hero informatics class."

Kagome didn't miss the different reactions that the comment caused. She felt the usual nerves and confusion that often came with Aizawa's lessons and his ways of announcing them. She waited for him to share what it would be, but he certainly took a few moments to really let them all stew on it.

"Code names," Aizawa stated. "You all will be coming up with a hero name for yourself."

Those words brought an uproar of excitement from the majority of the room, though it soon died down when Aizawa glared at them.

"This is related to the pro hero draft picks I mentioned the other day," Aizawa continued once silence had befallen the room again. "The drafts begin in earnest in the second and third years, after students have had the opportunity to gain experience and can become immediate assets to the pros," he stated. "In other words, for them to extend offers to first years like you shows they are interested in your future potential. These offers are likely to be canceled if that interest dies down by graduation."

"Man, adults can be so selfish.." Mineta remarked, knocking his tightened fist against his desk.

"So we have to prove ourselves even once we've been picked?" Hagakure asked.

"That's right," Aizawa responded. He turned to glance at the board behind him, picking up a remote and tapping a button on it. A chart appeared on the board. "Here are the totals for those with offers."

Kagome, like the rest, glanced at the board. It went in order from the most to the least, with her brother and Bakugo leading with the most. She found her name not too far down on the list.

The more she had only meant she had more to sort through, no matter the positives of it.

"In the past years, it's usually been a bit more evenly dispersed, but all eyes were on these two this year," Aizawa remarked, motioning to the top two.

"Todoroki's first and Bakugo's second?" Jirou remarked.

"It's the complete opposite of the results of the Sports Festival," Kirishima stated in observation, and Sero leaned closer.

"Well, I guess it makes sense," he stated. "A lot of folks are too scared to ask for a guy who had to be restrained on the number one podium."

The comments caught Bakugo's attention, and he turned to glare at them, his expression the ever-persistent menacing one.

"What're the pros scared of?!"

Kagome arched a brow and leaned to rest her cheek in her palm as she glanced at him. "Your personality is probably a good starting point," she remarked in a flat tone. Bakugo bristled and glared at her, but she merely held a hand up and waved, unperturbed by the mean look he gave her.

"Keeping these results in mind, whether or not anyone asked for you, all of you will be participating in internships with pros," Aizawa stated.

"Internships?" Midoriya repeated the word, and Aizawa nodded.

"Yeah," Aizawa said. "At USJ, you already got to experience combat with real villains. Some of you got a lot closer to them than others," Aizawa continued, and she felt his gaze linger on her for a moment.

Kagome tightened her grip on her skirt at the mention of that event. In the back of her mind, that red-eyed villain returned, once more recalling his words and actions. It made her uncomfortable, to say the least.

"Despite that, this will still be a meaningful training experience for you to see pros at work firsthand," Aizawa explained.

"So that explains the hero names," Sato commented. Uraraka perked up.

"Things are suddenly getting a lot more fun!" she exclaimed.

"Well, those hero names will be temporary," Aizawa stated, "but if you're not serious about it-"

"There will be hell to pay later!"

The door abruptly slammed open, causing all attention to stray from Aizawa and to the figure there.

"A lot of hero names used by students end up getting recognized by society," Midnight explained as she walked into the room. "They more often then than not end up becoming professional hero names."

"It's how it often goes," Aizawa stated. "So Midnight will be making sure your names are okay." After saying those words, Aizawa bent to retrieve the sleeping bag he had under his desk. "I can't do stuff like that." He directed his attention back to the students before him. "When you give yourself a name, you get a more concrete image of what you want to be like in the future, and you can get closer to it," he explained. "This is what they mean when they say names and natures do often agree. Like All Might, for example."

Whiteboards and markers were handed out for them to write on. When Kagome got her's she found herself staring blankly at the surface for several minutes.

It was something she'd never considered before this moment, a name to go by as a hero. Even as those around her wrote things down, she found herself sitting at a stalemate.

Her grip on the marker tightened as she alternated between thinking and listening to the others as they presented what they'd come up with to the rest of the room.

Uraraka had decided on Uravity. Her brother and Iida had both gone with just their given names. Midoriya had decided on Deku. Shippo had been one of the firsts to present, his being Foxfire. The rest had either decided on one, or been sent back to the drawing board in Bakugo's case…- It just left her.

She stared at the single word she'd written down on the board, trying to gauge how right or wrong it felt. She couldn't tell how she felt, but at the very least, it was something she didn't mind going by. In a way, it did fit. For now, at least.

Miko.

000

"Now that everyone's decided on a hero name, we'll get back to talking about the internships," Aizawa began. He had a stack of papers in his hands. "They will last for a week. As for where you'll have them, those who had offers will be given your own lists, so you can choose from those yourself," Aizawa stated. "Those of you who didn't have offers will choose from among forty agencies around the country that will be accepting our interns," he explained. "They all work in different places and have different specialties as a result.

"That's right," Midnight stated, "For example, Thirteen would be focused on rescues from accidents and disasters for than actual combat against villains."

"You should think carefully before making your decisions," Aizawa said.

The papers he held were handed out before the bell rang.

"Turn your choices in before the weekend," he said. It was the last thing he'd said before he turned to leave the room for the morning break. "Make your decision efficiently," he remarked. "Dismissed."

It only gave them two days to make their choice.

Kagome glanced at the list she'd been given. Since she had a decent number of offers, she had a bit more options than some of the others. She scanned down the list at first, merely reading the different names and seeing if there were any she recognized.

Midway down the page one caught her eye, and her grip ended up tightening on the paper she held.

Endeavor Hero Agency.

She didn't say a word as she glared down at the name. She didn't know if she should be more surprised or offended. Right now, she was more stunned than anything.

How laughable.

Auroua-chan: Hero names. Honestly, deciding on one for Kagome is hard. It won't remain as Miko, that much is for sure. It's more of a temporary one. There are a few I'm thinking one for the future, and more suggestions are welcome as well.
Shippo was the exact opposite haha. I've liked the thought of Foxfire for him for a while.

Furthermore, it would seem something is going on with Kagome- more keenly, her hair. It's not so noticeable now, but that'll change sooner or later. Her hair's naturally shifting to white. How long will it be before the process is notable?

In this chapter, there was a flashback to an interaction with Kagome and someone notable. It will be revisited soon. It goes to show that Kagome always had her kind attitude, despite how she was brought up.

Internships and Hero Agencies…- It seems that Kagome has Endeavor as one of many. Is she likely to choose him, well, that'll be found out in the next chapter. It's not likely, but not impossible, I suppose.

The thought of Kouga just showing up and yoinking her out of class is extremely funny and I can imagine no better way to introduce him than that. It's pretty on par with him, after all.

The pairing;
So I might've decided on having Kagome paired with Hawks, but that doesn't mean it'll instantly become a thing. He'll be more of a mentor at first. As it is, their bond will primarily be friendship until it does go to more. He was chosen for more than just drama's sake, too. They'll balance each other out very well, more so than others.

Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading and I hope you all enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.

Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!

Bye for now~
