Things you need to know:
I am making Severus a mind magic expert. Using superpower wiki for memory reading. I just feel like it has to be different then Legilimens because I think you have to be awake for that one even with Queenie using it. I might be wrong. Found this on superpower wiki it works for me. Mind Walking: The ability to enter the mind of another.
I hope you guys have seen all the movies. I am pulling from the seventh book to some extent.
Chapter 31
Severus knew this would probably be his best and only chance to follow his orders successfully. He was strong enough at the different mental arts to dive in and get what he needed without the mage being conscious. The guilt however gnawed at his stomach as he stared at the sleeping mage. On the other hand he needed truth if he was in anyway going to twist it and lie to his masters to protect the mages. Severus had stared long enough. He sighed and sat down next to the teen. He began to lightly meditate while putting his hand on the boy's forehead. He felt his consciousness slide into the mindscape of the prone mage.
Severus blinked a few times as he studied his surroundings. He found himself in an ancient Egyptian looking throne room. He looked to the throne and saw Atem Ishtar sitting there, in what he imagined was full royal regalia, glaring at him. Severus shuddered a bit, if looks could kill.
"Did you think I had no mental defenses or that they were weakened in my current state? Even in sleep my mind is protected. You may or may not be stronger with your mind magics but I will fight you and then we will see." Atem aggressively stated not pleased with the situation he currently found himself in.
Severus stopped staring and finally found his voice. "I need to know what happened today and more about your magicks. The Dark Lord has already demanded to know and the Headmaster will as well once he returns to the school." Severus said wondering if the mage would give in willingly, confident in his own skills to defeat the mage should he fight back.
Atem glared back at the spy. However Atem did not know if he could win this fight. His defenses were strong but not as strong without the puzzle. Absolutely in no mood to deal with his captor trying to see his memories he made a snap decision and smirked predatorily.
"Fine but let's play a game first. If you win the challenge you can see the memory of today. If not you will face the shadow's wrath." Atem stated completely ignoring the fact Snape had said he also wanted information on him and his magicks. He would not give the man his secrets willingly.
Severus was not sure what the mage was talking about. His best guess was this was not some simple game but more of life or death kind of thing. He shuddered under the intense gaze. This pharaoh could give the Dark Lord a run for his money in intensity. Being inside the mage's mind, he could feel the ebb and flow of the magic which was intoxicating. The power. It was amazing. Was Dumbledore right? Were these mages the key to the war? Severus shook himself off he would not contemplate that thought any further. It was not their war.
"Well?" Atem asked wondering what was going on. Snape was just standing there in some sort of shock or deep thought.
Severus came out of his thoughts and finally spoke. "What do I have to do?"
"Simple really. Answer three questions truthfully and cross the Bridge of Death. If you lie you will fall. If you do not give the whole truth with full explanations you will fall. Since this is simply my mindscape you will not die in a literal sense but you will experience death and your mind will be trapped by the shadows and you will not awaken.
"How will you know if I am lying?" Severus asked genuinely concerned. Who the hell was this mage?
The shadows always know. No worries Snape I have no say in whether you are lying or telling the truth. The shadows are impartial, they will be judging you. I will merely be watching the show.
"What are the shadows? I thought that was your magic." Severus questioned wondering if he could get some answers from the boy…pharaoh..or whatever.
Atem smirked but indulged his captor. Yes I have shadow magick. Where do you think it comes from?
Severus just glared not understanding.
Atem sighed. Play the game. If you survive I will consider answering your question.
"Fine," Severus growled out.
Atem snapped his fingers and the shadows engulfed the area. Suddenly there was a dark foggy chasm separating them with a decrepit bridge and an old decrepit one-eyed bridge keeper.
Severus took in his new surroundings and looked to the Pharaoh on the throne now separated by the dark chasm.
"Remember just state the whole truth. Game Start." Atem said while trying not to show concern for this man. There was a good chance he would fail this shadow game. Spies lied to survive now he had to speak truth.
Severus cautiously approached the bridge where the one-eyed decrepit old man was and listened as he spoke suddenly.
"Stop! He who would cross the Bridge of Death must answer me these questions three, ere the other side he see."
"What…binds you to your two masters?" the one-eyed decrepit old man asked.
Severus paled at the first question. Seriously? He looked to the Pharaoh whose face was impassive as he watched Severus squirm.
"The Dark Mark binds me to the Dark Lord," he said quietly while flinching as the memory brought forth the pain he endured when he received the mark. It felt so real was wondered if it wasn't just his overactive imagination recreating the pain from the memory.
"As for the Headmaster, he has trapped me with some unbreakable vows." He finished as he swore he saw the golden bindings sink into his skin as he remembered the night he sought out Dumbledore. The desperation and panic of that night overwhelming his senses as if it was happening right here and now.
He glared at the Pharaoh who merely smirked knowingly and gave him a look of well go on. He had to say more! What more could he say? There was more to this "game" than meets the eye, he was sure of it.
Severus glared and continued. "One of the vows that bind me is to serve Dumbledore and the light until they win this war or I die whichever comes first and the other is a vow to protect Potter to the best of my ability. As for the dark mark, I am in service to him until he dies or I do. There is no known way to remove the mark. Happy now?" Severus snapped not enjoying talking about his masters and feeling like he was literally reliving each memory as he spoke.
"Why…do you fight in this war?" the one-eyed decrepit old man asked once the shadows and Pharaoh seemed satisfied.
"What? Didn't I just answer that question?" Severus balked terrified of what would happen while answering this question.
"No you answered what binds you to your masters. Now answer the question." Atem demanded feeling no pity at the moment. He was cranky and drained. After the day he had he cared little for Snape's discomfort. He needed to fully rest and that required the potions master to get out of his mindscape.
Severus sighed. A flippant answer was not going to work. He didn't want to tell his story. He didn't want to think about her.
"I seek redemption for my sins." Severus said looking up hopefully at the Pharaoh and that hope was immediately snuffed out with just one nasty look from the Pharaoh and the shadows seemingly growing restless.
It had to be the full truth. The shadows would accept no less then him baring his soul. Severus closed his eyes and tried to just breathe.
"I made many mistakes in my youth and one was joining the Dark Lord. He offered glory, power, vengeance, and I thought freedom. I had had a rough childhood and the only light in my darkness was a girl named Lily Evans who eventually became Lily Potter." Severus choked on her name; he didn't want to go further. The memories had literally been slammed into the forefront of his mind and were so fresh it seemed like yesterday. He swallowed hard and continued on silently praying for mercy.
"School had not been much better; James Potter and his friends bullied me non-stop. All I had were the Slytherins and Lily until I messed that up…" Severus paused as those events came forward almost driving him to his knees. He looked up begging silently for mercy that was completely rejected by the pissed off Egyptian. He supposed in hindsight breaking into the mages mind was not a good idea after all.
"By the time we graduated from Hogwarts the war was in full swing and Potter married Lily. One night I was spying for the Dark Lord and overheard part of a prophecy. I reported back to him what I had heard and he determined that the prophecy was talking about one of two babies born as the seventh month dies. Potter and Longbottom…He decided to go after Potter and I panicked. I couldn't ….lose her so I betrayed the Dark Lord and begged Dumbledore for help. Dumbledore used my vulnerability to lock me into the first vow which was giving him my loyalty but…" Severus paused.
He was so distraught from dredging up all these old memories that he had tried so hard to bury in the deepest recesses of his mind. At this point he realized he could see his memories come to life replaying like a movie for him, the bridge keeper, and the Pharaoh to see.
"No…please…Mr. Ishtar…Atem." He begged forgetting his pride not wanting to relive the next part or have it on display. The Dark Lord had not broken him, the Headmaster could not break him, but this teen…no Pharaoh had him on the edge of his breaking point and it looked as if he would be granted no reprieve.
"You agreed to the game and now you must finish or suffer the consequences. Now continue or lose yourself to the shadows which I can promise you will offer you no rest or mercy." Atem pushed almost feeling sorry for his captor but the game had started, it now had to be finished.
Severus looked away. He just stared blankly as he finished his story of why he was seeking redemption not even realizing tears were freely flowing down his face.
"Dumbledore was unable to protect them and…the Dark Lord killed Lily and Potter. She was my first friend and I loved her. It's always been her. It's my fault that she is dead. Dumbledore used my guilt to get me to make my second vow. The vow to protect Potter…Harry. He has her eyes, he said…Telling Voldemort that part of the prophecy will always be my greatest regret. It's my fault Potter was orphaned and grew up abused by his hateful muggle relatives. So many have suffered for that one terrible decision I made. It's all my fault…"Severus repeated as he fell to his knees in complete despair at what had been revealed as he relieved the grief of losing Lily all over again.
Atem decided the poor man had suffered through his punishment enough and mentally gave the bridge keeper a simple third question. One that should be easy to answer, and not cause the man any more pain.
"Severus, rise you are not done yet. You have one more question to answer." Atem commanded the broken weeping man.
Atem's words broke through to the man and he almost decided to forfeit. He would have if he didn't fear what these shadows would do to him if it was really worse than what he was already experienced from this "game". He looked towards the bridge keeper with trepidation and waited for him to speak.
"Why…should you be granted access to this memory?" the one-eyed decrepit old man asked.
Severus almost sighed in relief. He looked to the Pharaoh wondering why such an easy third question. The mage just nodded his head looked back neutrally and waited. Severus got himself put back together and answered.
"It will be easier for me to protect you and the others if I know the truth. I want to protect you from both my masters as much as the vow will allow me to. Knowing the truth will allow me to lie and twist the truth of what happened to both the Dark Lord and the Headmaster."
"Right. Off you go." the Bridge Keeper responded with a wide semi-toothless grin.
Severus almost gaped. Was that really it? He could cross and see the memory. He tentatively took a few steps onto the bridge and nothing happened so he continued on. He must have won the "game". Some game. It was more akin to torture.
"You did well Snape. I will grant you access to all of my memories from today." Atem said wearily, really just wanting the man out of his head.
He had used so much magic today plus two shadow games. Oh how he missed his puzzle. Shadow games were so much easier with it. There was a reason why he was unconscious at the moment. He sighed and snapped his fingers. A door suddenly appeared. It was where he stored his memories. He stood and began walking to the door assuming Snape would follow him.
Snape followed the young king sedately while watching his body language carefully. He showed barely a hint of the exhaustion he was probably actually feeling. He himself was exhausted from the trauma of what he had just been put through. This boy king nearly broke him.
As they entered the room Severus noted that there were papyrus scrolls everywhere and an Egyptian style desk and chair in the middle of the room. It was a library of memories. He watched as the Pharaoh went to one particular section which he guessed were the more recent memories and pulled out a scroll.
"Sit at the desk and put this bracelet on." Atem told the potions master.
Severus stared at the snake bracelet that had appeared in the Pharaohs hand curiously. It was gold and the bracelet was the type that had the snake winding around your wrist. He got a bad feeling about this but complied. As soon as it was attached he growled in pain as the snakes mouth opened and bit his wrist.
"What did you just do to me?" demanded a pissed off Severus.
"Merely protecting myself. This will insure that you will not linger in my memory room. My little snake is slowly draining your life energy. If you let it drain you completely you will die. Now simply tap the scroll with your finger twice and you will see my memories. I do not wish to relive today so I will leave you to it. Remember your time is limited in here." He said as he snapped his fingers and a silver hourglass with white sand appeared on the desk and began falling.
Severus cursed under his breath. He was alone with all the answers he could ever want and would not be able to get them. He quickly tapped the scroll and watched what one could call a Valentine horror movie.
He was shocked at the start of the memory seeing two Ryous. How was this possible? He also finally got to hear one of the nicknames that never got fully stated. Tomb Robber? Why did he call the aggressive looking Ryou a tomb robber? At least now he knew why Ryou had been at the castle. He couldn't believe the mages were stupid enough to try and break into the Headmaster's office.
The scene changed to Madame Puddifoot's and he smirked at everything that happened there. It was amusing to see the mages so uncomfortable. The part involving Potter was disturbing. He wondered what else the Headmaster was doing to keep his pawn controlled.
He felt the Pharaoh's panic when Yugi had mentally called him and he saw how quickly the young Pharaoh took control and didn't hesitate to demand obedience from his high priest? He saw the chaos the Pharaoh saw when he and Potter had made it back into the town proper. He sat there shocked as he saw the body of the mages protector and how bad off Yugi was. He could feel the despair as Atem and Harry lost the battle against everything coming at them.
He felt awe as he experienced the God's awesome power surround Atem after a desperate prayer. Severus watched as Atem ordered the Dragon God to judge them all. Oh that was bad really bad. Albus was going to be furious with the boy for causing so much harm to Hogsmeade. He wondered what the dragon did to those that were touched by its flames. Severus continued watching in awe at the healing spell the boy received and then almost fell out of his chair as he glimpsed the Angel of Death. Sweet merlin the boy could see Death!
Severus watched the precursor to him finding the boys and finally the memory jumped to Moody. The feelings coming off the mage were fear and an unbridled fiery rage that had Severus dreading what he was about to see next. Once Mad-eye had the boy chained to the wall they argued, Moody struck out angrily with a few hexes, and somehow the boy convinced him to play a game. After what Severus had just gone through he wasn't sure he wanted to see what had happened. The game had turned out to not be hard but Moody lost his patience and tried to circumvent the rules set in place. The punishment that Moody was given and the look in the Pharaoh's eyes…Severus pushed away from the desk abruptly. He shook himself out of his thoughts. To use someone's weakness like that and making it an endless loop. He idly wondered what he would be suffering through had he lost his shadow game. Atem was ruthless to his enemies that much he had learned.
He looked at the hourglass and realized the Pharaoh must have been worn down. He still had extra time. He could sneak in a few memories but if he got caught…of course what would it matter if he failed to appease his masters. Death was inevitable so he decided to take his chances. He stalked over to where Atem had pulled this memory and pulled a few out from the top of the shelf since this was at the bottom. Maybe he could get something useful.
What he saw was confusing…Atem and Yugi separating into two bodies? A crazy duel with monsters coming out of that muggle contraption of theirs. Atem choosing to stay in the land of the living? What was he seeing? This made no sense…Atem arriving in Medjai territory, duties explained, training, monsters and stone tablets, two girls forming bodies, their first run in with death eaters, the Egyptian enclave, more training and schooling, some fall tournament for their muggle game, meeting Bill Weasley, and the Death Eater attack in Japan. Suddenly the memories ended as he was thrown violently across the room from a wave of shadows coming from a pissed off Pharaoh.
"You dare rifle through my memories! What did you see?" Atem stepped towards the surprised potions master seething internally and glaring daggers into the foolish man.
"I…" Severus began but didn't get anything out as Atem decided he had no patience for an answer.
"Naraa madha kan ra'ayt" Atem cast none to gently having no patience for an actual answer.
Severus let out a yell as pain exploded through his mind. He could feel the Pharaoh mercilessly ripping through what he had just seen.
Atem was relieved that the man had only seen his modern life thus far but it still gave Snape information he preferred the man not to have. At least he had not seen anything that happened before the ceremonial duel.
"You will suffer the consequences for this when I awaken. Now get out of my head!" Atem stated as he roughly pushed the man out of his mind.
Severus came back to himself with a migraine and groaned loudly. He had pissed the mage off and said mage would most likely be at full power come morning. Would he really make him suffer more consequences? Hadn't he been punished enough this night? He locked the mage in the spare room of his quarters, took a headache potion, and stumbled his way to his own bedroom dreading what was to come and promptly passed out.
