Chapter 33
February 15th
Riddle Manor-Morning
Voldemort was sitting in his private study and was busy planning and re-planning his moves after having to deal with the aftermath of the day before. He was beyond frustrated with the mages and Dumbledore's machinations. They would all pay once he achieved his goals.
Suddenly waves of pain shot through his head. It took a moment to figure out what was causing the immense pain but when he realized what was happening he was beyond pissed off. Someone was aggressively severing one of his dark marks and claiming one of his servants. Voldemort growled focused on the mark and realized it was his spy. He concentrated on the link and recognized the shadow magick that was slowly destroying each of the mark's layers. That mage was going to pay, he was already responsible for the loss of quite a few Death Eaters, including Lucius, and so he would not give up Severus easily. Voldemort pushed back trying to reconnect the layers but he had not been fast enough. The mage just attacked more brutally and the pain was getting to be too much.
That blasted mage was claiming his spy as his own. Voldemort had to let go or the backlash would knock him out if not outright kill this new body of his. His magic exploded outward in anger over losing his spy. How had this happened? How had the mage done that? Severus must have screwed up when invading the teen's mind it was the only explanation as to why this had happened. But how? He should have been the only one who could get rid of the Dark Mark. The spell was his bloody invention!
Voldemort looked over the ruins of his office. He had lost his temper from the pain and anger. He put his office back together while cursing the mages over and over in his mind. Needing to let off some steam he called some of his more vicious followers and looked at his list of top muggle villages that needed to be burned to the ground. He found the perfect one and headed for the small muggle village of Wetwang that was just southeast of Little Hangleton. If they had time maybe they could take out the muggles of Lickey End while they were at it.
Hogwarts
Albus and Dolores were finally able to head back to Hogwarts much to the Headmaster's relief. He needed to find out what had happened in Hogsmeade and work on damage control. No sooner had he walked in the front doors had Minerva had accosted him.
"Albus, where have you been? Are you all right?" Minerva asked in rapid succession wanting answers and relieved to see the Headmaster hale and whole.
"It seems someone drugged Miss Umbridge and me, so I spent the evening in St. Mungos." Albus replied as the two headed towards his office.
"Oh my goodness! Do you know who did this to you?" Minerva asked concerned for her longtime friend and boss.
"Alas, I know not but there was an unfortunate consequence. It seems I agreed to support Minister Fudge and his political agenda, but we can speak later about that. I need to know what has happened." Albus demanded gently.
"Oh Albus, it was terrible…" Minerva started off as she explained everything that had happened.
Albus sat at his desk contemplating what his deputy headmistress had told him and what he could guess at. Mundungus and Doge were missing presumably soulless. Alastor was in the infirmary and confirmed to be soulless along with some of the students. Fortunately there were no student deaths, which was a miracle with Death Eaters and Dementors having run amuck all over Hogsmeade. The inhabitants of Hogsmeade itself had not been so lucky. They were either dead, kissed by dementors, being treated for dementor exposure, or soulless from whatever creature that blasted mage summoned.
Unfortunately none of the mages had perished in the fight. Mundungus and Alastor had failed in their mission. Two were in the infirmary and one was at full power having somehow broken free of the enchanted bracelet which should have been impossible. And to top everything off it seemed that Alastor and Severus had gotten into an altercation.
He would have to tread carefully and make sure his spy wasn't having any doubts about where his loyalties belonged. Even though the vows would keep him from betraying him, Severus could still become difficult if he decided he wanted to protect the mages. What boggled his mind was the fact that his spy would grow attached to anyone. He always made sure to discourage any attachments he might develop, a spy with nothing to lose was far more effective than someone who had attachments and therefore less willing to take chances and die for the cause. He would speak with Severus in a bit. Obviously the mage was behaving so the binding could also wait a little while longer.
Albus decided he needed to go to the infirmary. He had to have the mages brought to heel immediately. There was no time to wait for the loyalty potion he wanted. They were far more resourceful than one would expect from a group of teenagers. He could not afford a repeat of Hogsmeade so his plans would have to change a bit. Albus stood up but paused when he finally realized the portrait on his desk was agitated.
"Albus wait!"
"What is it old friend?" Albus asked curiously.
"People were in your office while you were gone! I am not sure if they took anything or not."
"What? Who would do this?" Albus asked temporarily getting sidetracked. Who would dare break into his office?
"I do not know. Not one word was spoken and there was smoke everywhere. Not a single portrait could see anything."
"That is not good. I will check to see if anything is missing when I get back. I have to deal with the mages first. Unfortunately I cannot afford to wait lest something else may happen." Albus explained frustrated. He needed to know if anything had gone missing. But nothing looked amiss glancing around at his office.
"Good luck Albus."
Extreme Measures
Albus entered the infirmary and found one of his two targets immediately. The Ishtar boy seemed to be resting peacefully. He resisted the temptation to curse the boy. He couldn't risk getting his hands dirty so the boy would live for now.
"Albus! It's good to see you alive and well. We were all so worried about you." Poppy admonished the older man.
"My apologies. It was quite unfortunate circumstances that took me out of the castle. But all is well now. I do need an update on Mr. Ishtar and Mr. Mutou though." Albus said redirecting Poppy's attention.
"Mr. Ishtar is being treated for the cruciatus curse and Mr. Mutou is in some sort of healing coma with an unknown status." She rattled off going into professional mode.
"I see. That is good. They shall be fine for travel then." Albus said wondering what had really happened to the two mages.
"Excuse me, Headmaster? I don't think I heard you correctly." Poppy questioned thinking the Headmaster had gone crazy.
"It seems due to the fact they were injured, their families wish for them to be removed from the school premises. I am to take them home immediately." Albus explained hiding his impatience at the woman.
"But you can't! They are still recovering." Poppy protested.
"Alas, I have little choice. They are foreign to this country and cannot be held against their families' wishes." Albus soothed upping his grandfatherly concerned look.
"Fine do what you must, but know I do not agree with this." Poppy huffed angrily. Of all the things. Why couldn't their families just wait a little bit longer?
Poppy finally left the Headmaster alone with Marik needing to check on her other patients in a huff. He levitated the boy and retrieved the other unconscious mage. He quietly floated them out of the infirmary and took them to his office. He called for a house elf to quickly and discreetly pack and retrieve their belongings. While the elf did that, Albus activated the floo and called for Sirius.
"Headmaster? Is something wrong? Is Harry alright?" Sirius asked answering the floo call panicked about why the Headmaster would be contacting him.
"Harry is fine my dear boy. I need you to step through and help me bring two of the mages over. I will explain everything once we get them situated." Albus responded deciding against telling Sirius that the boy was in a healing coma. He was stable, that's all that mattered.
While Sirius came over the house elf returned with their belongings. Albus shrunk them down and put them in a pocket.
Sirius agreed shocked at this turn of events but came through and took Marik to Grimmauld Place as Albus brought Yugi over.
Sirius and Albus brought the boys to a bedroom on the second floor, close to the room Sirius was staying in. Sirius watched quietly as Albus used some strange sparkling substance on the bracelets the teens wore and unshrunk their belongings.
The two wizards headed back down to the kitchens to talk about what was going on.
"What is going on Albus?" Sirius asked not understanding what prompted the Headmaster to bring two Death Eaters to his home, or whatever they were.
"This is Marik Ishtar, brother to the leader of this little group of mages, and Yugi Mutou, cousin to their leader. They will need to stay here for the foreseeable future. Keeping the mages together has proven to be an issue. The leader of their group will not bend it seems without powerful persuasion. He slipped his leash and helped Voldemort destroy Hogsmeade yesterday. Many are dead, more are injured, and quite a few are soulless." Albus said sadly putting on his sad and tired grandfather persona.
"Sweet merlin. Albus I know you said they were dangerous. I just didn't imagine it was that bad. Are you sure we shouldn't just deliver them to the Ministry?" Sirius said alarmed.
"Alas, with the corruption running rampant there, I fear they would merely end up back with Voldemort. No it is better we keep them as far from Voldemort and his followers as possible." Albus said convincing Sirius easily that he was right.
"What do you expect me to do with them?" Sirius asked wondering what he would do with two teenage dark mages.
"They cannot leave with those bracelets on, nor can they use any of their mage magicks. I have adjusted my spells to bind their magic completely. So they are essentially harmless. Do with them as you will but be careful. Mr. Ishtar has no problem showing his true colors and watch out for Mr. Mutou he uses his youthful and innocent looks to lure people in and make them believe that he is not a dark and evil magic user." Albus warned Sirius knowing that should be enough to deter the man from befriending the mages.
"I must return. I need to speak with Severus and deal with my rogue mage. Let me know if they give you any trouble." Albus said as he stood and left via floo once more.
Upon returning to his office he quickly checked around to make sure nothing had been taken and surprisingly it seemed as if nothing had. Another mystery to solve but he didn't have time at the moment. He needed to speak with Severus and deal with the mage, so he sent for a house elf to retrieve his potions master and Atem.
Mage Dorms
Severus and Atem entered the dorm, and the Pharaoh received a warm greeting from Mana. Relief spread across Seto and Ryou's features as well glad their Pharaoh was alright. Lupin excused himself deciding he just needed a break from the last day and that Severus could deal with the teens. Severus couldn't blame the werewolf but dammit he wanted a break too. After everything that had happened in the last 24 some odd hours he just wanted to be alone to his thoughts and grieving. Everything felt so raw.
While Snape just stood there seemingly spaced out, Atem went to the couch and asked after Marik and told everyone about the loss of Shadi. Everyone exchanged information on what had happened to put it all together looking nervously at Snape not sure if he was listening or not.
"You may speak somewhat freely now in front of Snape. He has been put on a tight leash due to his own foolishness." Atem stated noticing his priests' uneasiness.
Ryou, Seto, and Mana looked towards Atem confusedly while Snape snapped out of his thoughts of regrets and Lily long enough to glare at the Pharaoh.
Bakura suddenly appeared since he took that as an invitation to come out and stalked towards Snape with a gleeful look in his eyes. Severus stood stock still as he realized the spirit who seemed to be a bit unhinged was coming right at him. Bakura ignored the man's moment of fear and grabbed the man's wrist and looked at what the Pharaoh had done.
"Well, well, Pharaoh I didn't know you had it in you. Nicely done." Bakura approved after reading the hieroglyphics around Snape's wrist.
"So what did you do to make the Pharaoh use that kind of magick? It had to have been quite the nefarious act." Bakura taunted cackling in amusement at Snape's predicament.
"Tomb Robber, leave the man alone. While his punishment is deserved he has been through enough. Due to some stolen memories he knows of our present day lives and scraps of our past as well" Atem snapped not in the mood to deal with Akefia's antics, still tired from balancing his magicks like that and still pissed about the stolen memories.
"Fine, ruin all my fun Pharaoh." Bakura said dramatically while mock pouting.
Ryou just face-palmed at the spirit's antics, Mana giggled, and Seto smirked because laughing out loud is so above him.
Snape glared at the spirit and the other teens.
He then brought his attention back to the crazy spirit. "You, you're the one causing all the chaos in my classroom!" Severus growled out finding his equilibrium once again.
"Of course. It's not like you haven't suspected. I know you have seen me before this." Bakura smirked enjoying riling up the potions master.
"I thought I was seeing things. Who are you anyways and why do you serve a Pharaoh if you're a tomb robber?" Severus asked calming a bit and letting his curiosity peak.
"I am Akefia Bakura; the King of Thieves and over there is my innocent descendent Ryou Bakura. And it looks as if that is all I can tell you." Bakura said as he looked over to the Pharaoh who shook his head in the negative.
Severus scowled but didn't push. Curiosity was what got him in his current situation. The mages continued their conversations until a house elf appeared and told Snape he was wanted in the Headmaster's office and to bring Atem. Severus paled. Never had he felt so out of control when it came to the situations he was put in as a spy.
"It will be fine. The memory you won, you are able to freely talk about. We knew this would happen. You cannot protect me from my own actions. I am going to come willingly." Atem said trying to reassure the stricken man.
"No Atem. You don't know what he will do." Seto stalled wishing there was some way to stop this.
"What choice do I have? I do not regret my actions. Yugi and Harry would have died had I not asked for help."
"I don't like this." Ryou stated, not wanting the Pharaoh to be hurt again, while looking more like Akefia with the glare he was giving.
"I don't either but I do not see a way around this." Atem said grateful for his priest's concern.
Mana hugged him tightly worried about what would happen. Once Atem managed to free himself from her grip he and Severus walked silently to the Headmaster's office dreading what was coming.
Headmaster's Office
"Severus my boy, do come in." Albus smiled grandfatherly at his potions master.
"You wished to speak with us, Headmaster." Severus stated hiding his tension beneath his normal briskness.
"Yes but first bind Mr. Ishtar. We do not want any trouble while he is at full power." Albus stated watching his potion master very carefully for his reactions.
"I don't think that it is necessary. He came willingly, Headmaster." Severus argued back showing nothing of how he felt about this.
"I said, do it." Albus demanded of his spy. He really didn't think the mage was a threat at the moment, but wanted to see how his spy would respond and it looked as though he was losing him.
"As you wish" Severus looked at Atem helplessly.
Atem gave an imperceptible nod. Severus walked behind the young pharaoh and bound his wrists with a simple spell and moved him over to one of the chairs in the room.
Albus moved his attention to his captive and spoke. "As you may have guessed I wish to speak about what happened yesterday."
Atem sighed. This was not going to end well. "We split up. Marik and Yugi were the first to be attacked by the Death Eaters and dementors. When we realized there was trouble Harry and I went to find them. Marik was gone and Yugi was gravely injured. Harry and I fought but we began to lose. He went down and I was about too as well so I called upon the shadows to absorb some attacks and…" Atem hesitated; this was what Dumbledore wanted to know about.
"And what did you do next, Mr. Ishtar?" He demanded with a current of power flowing through his words showing his calm façade was just that, a façade.
"I prayed to my Gods and they answered by releasing my power so I could summon my Dragon." Atem answered cringing at what he just admitted.
"And what did your dragon do?" Albus asked more aggressively as the boy paused once more.
"He took the souls of anyone around us."
"The reports say half of the population was decimated between you, the dementors, and the Death Eaters." Dumbledore snapped losing some more of his composure.
"Neither I or my dragon killed anyone!" Atem answered defensively as the shadows swirled at his agitation.
"And taking peoples souls is much better!" Albus retaliated.
"They will awaken once a lesson has been learned, well most will. Those who cannot learn the lesson of their greatest sin will stay in the shadow realm reliving their greatest sin over and over until their body dies. They will come out of this as better people." Atem explained trying to contain his powers even bound the shadows still stirred because they were feeding off his emotions.
The Headmaster was flaring his own powers and it was making him want to recoil and let his own power completely loose and shadow game the old fool. But he couldn't. He didn't know what the old man had planned.
Severus gaped at the pharaoh. That was literally someone living in their own personal hell over and over. It is said that guilt alone can hold someone in their own hell. Was that would have happened to him? Living Lily's death over and over. He shuddered involuntarily. He never would have escaped.
Albus stood up and approached the mage. Atem had nowhere to go sitting in the chair. He leaned back away from the Headmaster as he got in his face.
"Release them at once." Albus snapped putting a compulsion into his voice.
"What?" Atem asked shocked completely ignoring the compulsion magic as it washed over him.
"You heard me I said release them. All of them now."
"I cannot." Atem refused.
"You lie. You said you could when we questioned you under Veritaserum." Albus retorted back.
"It's not that simple. I do not have the power required to release that many souls." Atem said contemplating that scenario if he tried it without his puzzle. Yeah, no that would not end well.
"What do you need to do it then? I want them all released." Albus asked wondering if the mage was just stalling.
Atem clamped his mouth shut he didn't want him to know he needed the puzzle to do a mass soul release.
"You will do as I say or Marik and Yugi will suffer the consequences." Albus threatened pulling his trump card.
Severus stared wondering what the headmaster was talking about. The two boys were in the infirmary doing just fine last he checked.
"What did you do?" Atem demanded now struggling and letting some of his power and anger loose. He expected to be tortured. Not the old fool using his loved ones against him. And of course Marik and Yugi had been easy prey since they had been in the infirmary.
"They are gone from the castle but safe for as long as you cooperate. If not then I cannot be responsible for what might happen to them. You will do as I say when I say it or there will be consequences." Albus explained completely laying down the law.
Atem lowered his head in defeat. He couldn't/wouldn't risk his family. "Fine. You win." He said quietly.
"Excellent choice my boy. Now release every soul you have taken since your fight in Japan against the Death Eaters." Albus ordered turning jovial suddenly like he had multiple personalities.
"What? You would have me release your enemies?" Atem questioned not thinking the man had completely and utterly lost his mind.
"It is not your place to question me. Now do it." Albus demanded gaining an edge to his voice once again.
"I still cannot. I don't have my puzzle and I cannot cast spells bound." Atem growled out frustrated with this old fool.
"It's a good thing I have your little trinket now isn't it." Albus said as he walked back behind his desk and went over to the back wall with a portrait on it and opened it up.
Inside was shelving and on it was Atem's puzzle. He stared in horror. Whatever Bakura had stolen wasn't their items and when the Headmaster discovered the copies he would know what had happened. Severus released the Pharaoh and backed off trying to understand the emotions that he was seeing. Something else was wrong. The Headmaster returned with the puzzle and backed off waiting for the boy to whatever it was he needed to do.
Atem calmed himself. This was going to be a huge spell. He concentrated on the runic formation that started glowing beneath his feet. A shadowy purple circle appeared. The outer ring had hieroglyphics all around it. The next ring had symbols representing the mind, body, heart, and soul. In the center was the eye of Horus glowing ethereally. His puzzle began floating in front of him, glowing in a shadowy blue while he chanted in Egyptian:
What is lost, it is now time to return.
Not dead, nor not of the living,
Spirits of the punished, I call.
Be free; cast your hearts from the dark realm.
Let the vessel call to that which belongs
Let the will of the vessel carry his soul to him.
Return to the body what separates man from animal.
So mote it be.
Finally after about ten minutes the runic circle faded and Atem slouched a bit. That was one tough piece of magic. The shadow realm hadn't wanted to let go of that many souls at once. The shadows fed off the life energy in those trapped souls, duelists that played shadow games, and those who called upon the denizens of the realm. Shadow magick always had a price. But taking so much at once, made it almost as if the shadows were tired, practically docile after what he had just done.
"It is done." Atem said despondently with a deep simmering rage just below the surface waiting to come out.
"Excellent my boy. Now I believe it is time to take care of your magic until it is needed again." Dumbledore said cheerfully eyes twinkling again.
Atem glared at the now cheery Headmaster. He felt dread and almost instinctively backed away. He curbed the impulse and stood still. He knew his magick would be bound again but he was still not looking forward to it. Dumbledore approached the boy with a new silver bracelet and chanted whatever it was he was saying, it didn't seem like Latin, while using some sparkly substance that was absorbed into the bracelet. He felt as his magic was restricted once again and was almost sick. He stood there, head bowed, as his body adjusted to the sudden restriction.
Severus made a snap decision and allowed the mental link to form between him and the Pharaoh wanting to know if he was alright. Atem snapped his head up surprised but formed his side of the connection as well. That magic was simple compared to what he had just done.
Severus was almost overwhelmed with the inferno of fiery rage coming off of the Pharaoh. Outwardly he looked defeated and slightly submissive but on the inside. The defiance and rage were all consuming.
Albus returned to his desk and addressed his spy completely ignoring the tired mage. "Now, Severus my boy I was informed you had an altercation with Alastor last night amidst this chaos. Care to explain."
"I ran into him just as Mr. Ishtar and two Slytherin boys were levitating an unconscious Potter and the Mutuo boy back to the castle. He was going to attack them. I did not feel that was the correct course of action and interfered. You know we do not exactly get along. What would you have expected to happen between us if we ever disagreed." Snape drawled wondering what the repercussions for his defiance would be.
Albus pursed his lips with a deep frown. The animosity was not unknown to him but he did not think two fairly rational men would take it that far in the midst of chaos.
"Severus this childish animosity with Alastor must end. What if your distraction had gotten you or he killed? What if Mr. Ishtar had decided to take advantage of the situation and attacked both of you? We know he has no problem killing any opposition." Albus stated reminding his spy that this mage was dangerous.
Atem glared and was about to retort.
/No don't. This is between the Headmaster and me./ Severus said trying out this mind link for the first time.
Atem glared for the sake of it and sat back down in the chair. It looked as if this could take a while.
"Headmaster, Moody is unhinged and should not be trusted near the mages. His intent was to kill the boy and I was in the way." Severus snapped.
"Be that as it may you need to get along with him. I will speak with him about trying to murder the boy since we need him alive at the moment. However protecting the boy seems to be far too big of a concern for you. I hope you have not grown attached to a bunch of dark magic users. What would Lily think if she thought you were turning away from the light for these foreign teenagers? On everything we have fought for? Do I need to remind you why we took the mages in the first place? They are a threat to everything we hold dear. Their magic is dark and the mages themselves lack the moral standards that we hold for our society." Dumbledore lectured putting magical compulsions into his words. Though the guilt trip should be enough to get his spy back in line.
Atem was seething but sat quietly by as the Headmaster lectured Snape and insulted him and his priests. If he acted out it would not go over well. He closed his eyes trying to calm himself and felt the magic in the air. The old fool was doing something. Did Snape realize it or was he too caught up in his pain and grief from the mention of Lily? He could feel the deep hurt from Dumbledore's attempt at a guilt trip.
/Severus! Snap out of it. He is doing something to you./Atem practically yelled in his servants mind.
Severus realized the compulsion magic as he was snapped out of his grief. The Headmaster was making sure he didn't get attached to the mages and an underlying one to get along with Moody. He would have noticed right away if all his pain, grief, and regrets hadn't felt so fresh.
"I can assure you Headmaster that I am not attached to the mages in any form. I was merely trying to keep the boy alive because I know we need him to help us win this war. I have not forgotten what they are. I have not strayed or whatever you think I am doing. I even got the boys memory of yesterday for you to view if he proved to be difficult. However, I will get along with Moody the day he loses some of his paranoia. You know damn well he doesn't trust me and thinks I still belong to the Dark Lord." Severus bit out making sure disgust and venom were in his tone. He had to convince Dumbledore he had not been disloyal.
"Wonderful Severus. Just send the copy of the memory to me when you get back to your quarters. You must forgive me for my doubts my dear boy. We live in such perilous times."
"Of course. Now if that is all." Severus began saying.
"One more thing. Relieve the boy of his "trinket". It is far too dangerous for him to be allowed to keep it." Albus requested watching both his spy's reactions and the mages.
Atem snapped back to attention after having been ignored during that entire conversation. He held his puzzle tightly not wanting to give it up but not seeing a way out this situation. Severus stormed over to Atem aggressively and yanked the chain out of the Pharaoh's hands and returned it to the Headmaster who smiled.
"Thank you Severus. You may return the boy to his dorm." Albus said jovially happy that he still had his spy's loyalty.
Severus grabbed the mage and dragged him out the door and kept a firm hold on him until they arrived back to the dorms. Atem balked at the rough treatment and struggled a bit against being dragged but calmed when Severus spoke through their link.
/Will you relax. The portraits are watching. I am trying to not hurt you but struggling is making that a bit difficult./
/You are very good at what you do./ Atem said finally relaxing so he didn't end up with a bruise.
/Of course, how else would I have survived the Dark Lord?/ Severus said as they entered the dorm.
Once they arrived to the dorms Severus stood in the room awkwardly not knowing what was expected of him with his new "master" as Atem walked in and plopped on a couch. Atem looked up sensing the poor man's uneasiness.
/I know you want to be alone right now. You do not need my permission to leave. If I had wanted something I would have said as much. Again I did this protect my family, my priests, and my people. I am going to make every effort to not abuse our current situation./
Severus nodded imperceptibly and told the teens he would see them at dinner. They would survive lunch without him. Atem was right. He just wanted to be alone right now. The students wouldn't be let out most likely until dinner so he could have some peace for a few hours at least.
