CHAPTER 4: Online Snoops and Lessons to Boot.

In the ethereal vastness of Aresia's dreamscape, the skies stretched into an endless expanse of twilight hues, stars twinkling like the very thoughts of the universe made visible. Here, Taylor—was learning the essentials of her new existence as an Alicorn from Luna, whom she was beginning to believe was indeed the actual princess of the celestial moon, a mentor whose understanding of the ethereal realms was apparently nearly unmatched.

Luna's form was as majestic as the night sky she controlled, her mane flowing with the luminescence of starlight, a symbol of her status as a Greater Alicorn. She had explained that there were two types of Alicorn, those born, and those made. The Made Alicorn's were ponies who had been raised to that status, something neither Celestia or Luna apparently had any actual control over when such events happened, although they could apparently scheme and influence events to try to make such happenings more likely to occur. Made Alicorns were generally smaller in size and did not have the mane of starlight or fire constantly flowing in the wind unless they were unleashing some mighty magic or angered to near beyond reason, otherwise they had normal haired manes just as they were when they were ponies. Taylor did not know why she was a Greater Alicorn when she had been human beforehand, and neither did Luna, although the latter had said she suspected it had something to do with Taylor's rescue from death being a form of adoption and the greater power Luna had entreated, (yet refused to name), had likely had a hand in Taylor sporting her mane of white fire and greater size.

Now, as they stood upon a floating island of verdant grass, Luna began to instruct Taylor on the intricacies of Alicorn magic. "Focus, Taylor. Feel the magic within you, akin to a wellspring from deep beneath the earth," Luna instructed gently. She demonstrated, her horn glowing with a soft, enveloping light. "Telekinesis is not about grasping with force, but guiding with intention." At her gesture, a cluster of moonflowers levitated gracefully, their petals unfurling as if to greet the moonlight.

Taylor concentrated, her own horn flickering hesitantly before a glow settled firmly at its tip. With a thought, she mimicked Luna's motions, feeling a connection to the objects around her in the dream that was both eerie and exhilarating. The flowers responded, albeit jerkily, dancing in the air under her unsteady guidance. "It's like they're part of me," Taylor murmured, a sense of wonder in her voice.

"Yes, exactly," Luna nodded, her eyes reflecting pride. "Now, as for the other distinction between Greater and Made Alicorns," she continued, shifting the lesson to more theoretical grounds. "Greater Alicorns such as Celestia, myself, and now you, embody conceptual domains that are fundamental to both the physical and metaphysical aspects of the world, while Made Alicorn's generally only have the Metaphysical, like familial love, and magic. Your domain, Righteous War, encompasses not just the physical battlefields of the land, past and present, but the people involved, the struggles within every soul effected by it untainted by evil, and perhaps even some that are. It's a very powerful, very dangerous concept to have, with likely more facets of it you will uncover in the future. But I believe you will succeed in it given time."

Taylor listened intently, the weight of her new responsibilities beginning to dawn on her. However, she also had other more pressing things on her mind. "And the portals? The one that brought me here... Can it be reopened?" she asked, her thoughts turning to the possibilities of being able to return home.

"Possibly," Luna replied, her tone contemplative. "But mastering flight and teleportation is essential before you can learn to trace and rejuvenate spent gateways whether they be magical or non-magical. Flight will teach you about embracing the freedom of your new form and the magic your wings can cast, which you will find useful in combat, while teleportation will require you to understand the very fabric and nature of reality, its advantages are of course obvious." Luna's explanation laid out a path that was somewhat daunting yet also filled with the promise of greater independence and self-sufficiency.

Now that was something Taylor could get behind.

As the lesson continued, Taylor practiced her newfound abilities, each attempt bringing her a small amount of success compared to the previous one. Luna guided her through the motions, her presence a comforting constant in the seemingly endless dream, her new friend's patience was seemingly endless. Here in this place of power and possibility, Taylor was not just learning to use magic, (real bucking magic!); she was learning to redefine her very existence in a world far from the one she knew, under the tutelage of one who had walked the path of the stars for millennia.

Four days had passed without a word from Shadow Stalker, and despite her personal distaste for the former vigilante, Vista's concern was growing. As the most experienced member of the Wards, she had taken it upon herself to keep an eye on all her teammates, a practice partly fueled by her aspiration to someday lead them whenever the adults stopped treating her like a mere child. Shadow Stalker's prolonged absence was uncharacteristic, even for someone as fiercely independent as Sophia Hess. Today, Vista decided, she would press for answers.

Walking into the Wards' headquarters, more of a hangout spot really, her resolve hardened. She found Triumph in the common room, reviewing mission logs that he found seemed less important with each passing moment he did them. "Triumph, we need to talk about Sophia," Vista began, her tone more assertive than usual. "It's been four days. What's going on? Where is she?" Her gaze was steady, challenging, leaving no room for the usual runaround.

Triumph hesitated, the weight of leadership evident in his eyes as he met her stare. After a moment, he sighed, a sign that he was relenting, if reluctantly. "Sophia's in trouble," he admitted, his voice low. "It's not just about her being her usual self as Shadow Stalker. She's facing serious charges under her civilian identity—Sophia Hess, did some very messed up stuff and they don't want it to get out in case it reflects badly on the rest of us. They're considering transferring her, but it's likely she'll end up in a special parahuman juvenile detention facility in New York if things don't turn out in her favor, which I really dont believe they will."

Vista absorbed the news with a mix of shock and a grim understanding. As much as she disliked Sophia, the thought of any of her teammates facing such dire circumstances was unsettling, even if they brought it on themselves. "Thank you for telling me," she said quietly, her mind already racing through the implications. This development would shake the team, and as the unofficial second-in-command, it was up to her to help them navigate the storm that was surely coming.

She wondered how long it would be until the rest of the wards were clued into what was going on. She sat down and pulled out her Dragontech smart phone, she really shouldn't but she wanted to know what Hess had done. There was hardly anything significant these days that didn't end up on PHO. If she found something that went down and it was non-cape related on the day Hess vanished from the wards common area, or one of the days just before, then she might have a guesstimate as to what kind of trouble triumph was talking about.

Sophia had last been seen on the 4th of January by her fellow wards, Dennis having told Vista that Stalker had been nervous and complained of an upset stomach, blaming the cafeteria food in the PRT building. Her being sick was why Vista hadn't really been concerned about her absence, but it was now the morning of the 9th of January 2011, it had been four whole days and no one had said anything about Sophia being sick, or anyone else getting food poisoning either. The PRT and Procterate had'nt even mentioned Sophia at all, like she had never been a part of their organization.

To be honest with herself Vista was kind of disturbed by the whole disappearing trick they pulled, but she was happy she had gotten Truimph to read her in. Now to find out what Hess might be in trouble for. Being stuck in the Rig's high security cells was not a punishment for small infractions and Vista had only ever been inside those horrid rooms because of a master stranger exposure drill. Hess was either already gone via transfer or cooling her heels there, under Armsmaster's watch. Vista had already checked the lockup of the PRT building the first day she realized something was up, Hess certainly hadn't been held there. Now to snoop for scoops online.

I didn't notice anything unusual today either. Seems like a typical slow winter day. Cold as all get out though!

Anyone else experience that weird power outage on the south side last night? Lasted almost two hours. No storms or anything. Thoughts?

Yeah, had it here too. Heard it might have been due to maintenance, but no official word. Kinda spooky how dark it got.

Big fire down at Dock Twelve last night. Lots of smoke, and fire crews were all over it. Anyone know what started it?

My buddy in the FD says it was just a warehouse accident, nothing too sinister. Though, you know how rumors get in this town.

That is either a very good sign or a very, very bad one. Here is hoping it left because no one wanted treatment or no one needed treatment. Nine times out of ten a patient actively denying treatment means they will live, if in pain. The only other reason it left that way was if who ever was hurt was declared dead at the scene. So here is hoping for the best.

Pretty sure those were just trucks from the construction site near downtown. They've been moving some heavy equipment at odd hours. Head from a friend that one of the cranes has been pounding the soil with a huge weight piece in preperation for that new medhall building they were going to put in, the one partly owned by HeilKern BioPharm, that company that moved out of Argentina before that country declared martial law, (Argentina and Brazil are still standing somehow despite the cape crazy cartels so pray for them people). No they are not Nazi's, their founder was just unfortunately named. They actually specialize in melanin medical issues and treatments. Especially for those with a higher melanin! (Translation: They have a record of helping treat people of color) so STAHP CALLING THEM NAZI's!

Subject: Winslow High Incident - January 3, 2011.

Did you guys hear about the Winslow High locker incident today? A girl named Taylor got seriously hurt due to a the three top (redacted) of Winslow trying to kill her. She's missing now. Heard it involved her getting locked in a locker full of rotting septic crap by Sophia, Madison, and Emma, they are three real pieces of work that run the psychopath crowd dominating the school popularity tree, I really think they are three secret master powered villains using mental illusions to control the teachers and jocks in the school, probably nasty illusions too in order to make their victims afraid to speak out in fear of admitting they did stuff with the three (Censored) of Winslow high. They're the real evil in the Bay, bet they are gonna form their own gang and try to take over the city when they graduate. Thank goodness the police are onto them and will get them sent to prison before they graduate. With Taylor missing, I think that they mastered her into leaving the locker and drowning herself in order to try to hide evidence (its why no one can find the body! it has to be in the bay!)

I heard about the incident too but nothing about these so-called powers causing it, or that there was three people mastering an entire school, I will wait for the official PRT announcement (if there even is one) before considering any of that to be possibly even near the realm of truth. Poor locker girl though, hope she's found safe.

Vista had just wanted to see if anything stood out as a possibility; she did not expect to see Sophia listed by name. Triumph wasn't kidding when he said that Hess was in trouble. Vista had been to Winslow before during Wards PR events, although it had been some time since the last one. She knew that she, at the mere age of eleven, would struggle to fit inside those old lockers. She couldn't imagine a fifteen-year-old fitting in one without getting seriously injured in the process. If the very smallest hint of that post by VoidCowboy of all people, held even a hint of truth and Hess had stuffed another girl into a locker, even if it was a clean locker. Then that was a violation of the plea deal that Hess had with the PRT and the city court—something Vista wasn't supposed to know about but knew all the same. She wasn't supposed to know about Stalker's probationary status, and she wasn't going to tell anyone that she did, but she had her ways of learning things that the adults didn't want the kids to know. She was not appreciative of lacking critical info that could save her team's lives just because the adults were too scared to ruin their "innocence" or some other such malarkey. They had all triggered to get powers; they had all lost their "innocence" long ago. The adults, the PRT PR team, and the damn Youth Guard just refused to recognize that fact.

"Well, I've done my due Hess; looks like you're on your own. Good luck and good riddance. I just wish another girl would join the team who doesn't have massive gaping mental issues to foist on all her teammates. I'm not asking for perfection here, just someone else who is like me would be nice to work with."

Dennis, who was across the room, looked up from his assigned experiment to freeze parts of a computer clock in time, in a certain order, at certain intervals. "What was that? Sorry, I didn't hear you over the awesomeness of my blimey timey-wimey powers."

"Nothing, I wasn't talking to you Dennis. Also, I need to know who recommended that Imported Aleph TV show, so I know who to put on my revenge-list for feeding you bad ideas and horrible British lingo."

He smirked.

"It was Glory Girl!" he practically sang.

"Damn!"

"Vista! Language! Dont make me schedule another appointment with Chambers."

"You do that and I will turn his immediate vicinity into a twisted spatial-pretzel so he falls in the shape of his least favorite food for all time! Well? gonna follow through on that threat Triumph?"

"..."

"Didn't think so! Now everyone please be quiet for the next thirty minutes I have a math test to do in my room, and that means NO EXPLOSIONS DENNIS!"

While immersed in what could generously be called the beginner's course on the theories of teleportation, both magical and non-magical, Taylor and Luna found themselves deep in discussion amid the dreamlike expanse that formed their classroom. Luna was explaining the delicate balance and interaction between physical laws and magical essences and how to balance them when manipulating them directly, illustrating her points with subtle flares of her own horn, lighting up concepts in the air between them.

"The key, young Taylor," Luna's voice echoed with gentle authority, "is to harmonize your innate magical energy with the natural laws of reality's functions. This alignment permits you to manipulate space without directly conflicting with its fundamental properties, which, when that does happen, can get extremely messy."

"How messy are we talking?" Taylor asked.

"In the worst case?" Luna tilted her head in thought.

"Yes," Taylor nodded, "in the worse case."

Luna fell on her side and kicked at the air dramatically.

"Oh, Sweet Harmony the Blood! Help! Help! Gargle, blegh, endless agony in no time at all, and then death—before all that happens, so from an outsider's perspective it's instant-looking and painless in appearance. In I and my sister's first court before modern Equestria came into being, we called such an incident the dreaded red fountain, for that is what it resembled. We instituted a council of highly powerful unicorns to reverse time in an area to save the person who has screwed up that badly from such a fate during the graduation trials for my sisters academy of magic. It's how we know what actually happens to them from their perspective. Thank goodness Sir Star Swirl the Bearded invented teleportation safeties, although by then the council had become the entrenched as the early nobility and whether my sister or myself liked it or not, it was off to monarchy for the both of us. Huzzah, what a fun century that was!"

"Ahem, back to our training, yes?" She had the decency to blush at her tangent.

"Yeah, that would be good." Although internally Taylor kind of wanted to hear more.

Taylor, focusing intently, was beginning to think she was grasping the underlying principles of the exercise—the ones that made her brain itch—when an unexpected surge of energy coursed through her. Her horn ignited with a bright, pulsing glow, not sparked by her own will but seemingly by another force. Both Alicorns' attention snapped to the luminous display, and before either could react, the air beside Taylor shimmered and twisted. From this shimmer stepped another figure, startlingly identical to Taylor herself—another Aresia, looking just as confused as the original. The newcomer blinked, taking in her surroundings and the two staring back at her.

"What… where am I?" the duplicate Taylor stammered, her eyes wide as they settled on the original Taylor and then Luna. Luna, ever attempting to be the composed mentor, recovered first. "It appears," she said slowly, her gaze intense and thoughtful as she observed the second Taylor, "that we have just witnessed a spontaneous instance of self-mental duplication, possibly a complex form of mental dimensional slip magic, although you shouldn't have even the basic principles for such a successful application yet, much less the reserves to maintain it. Aresia, have you felt any unusual sensations or thoughts before this happened?" Taylor shook her head, her eyes still fixed on her double. "No, nothing. It just… happened. I didn't initiate anything consciously. Also, you keep slipping back into using Aresia, buck, I keep slipping into thinking that name. What gives!"

Luna calmly replied, "I am sorry if I caused offense, but it is your name, Taylor, Aresia, it is just as much your name now as Taylor is. It is the name ordained over the concept and domains that you are now tied to. Here in the dream world, it is much harder not to say things as they are rather than simply refer to them as they were. We are Alicorns; lies are something we struggle with greatly, even in our attempts to tell them unto ourselves, it is possible to not know the truth, but ye and I are both blessed and cursed to always know a lie when it is said here in this domain. You will find your discernment in the physical world is improved greatly although not perfect. Thank Harmony."

Now let us solve the mystery of thy sudden doppelgänger, I remember suckling only one blessed foal, not twins." The original and her new double both leaned back in embarrassment as they stood facing each other, an air of surreal tension hanging between them. Luna approached closer, her expression a blend of curiosity and concern. "This is most unusual but not unprecedented in the annals of magical history; why Princess Twilight once experimented with a similar spell on the more physical plane. Aresia, Taylor, you may be manifesting abilities beyond your current understanding, tied perhaps to deeper aspects of your domain of Righteous War. We must explore this carefully."

{NEGATION! IMPROVED EFFICIENCY! DATA COLLECTION!}

They both stared at the young Alicorn's pulsing horn. Luna was the first again to respond, in the royal voice no less.

"WHY THOU CRYSTALLINE FIEND! THOU HATH NOT ONLY FURTHER RUINED MINE BELOVED KINGDOM'S LANDSCAPE IN THY DRUNKEN ATTEMPTS AT TRAVERSING THE DIMENSIONAL ABYSS! BUT THOU WOULDST ALSO VIOLATE THE SANCTITY OF MY YOUNG DAUGHTER'S BODY! COME HITHER HENCE FORTH YOU ABOMINABLE ENERGY BASED PARASITE! COME FORTH AND LET ME SMITE THEE FOR THY INSOLENCE AND IMPUDENCE! MY BELOVED ARESIA'S BODY AND MAGIC ARE SACRED AND THE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR BOTH ARE ULTIMATELY HERS TO CARE FOR! NOT THINE!

Taylor wasn't sure how to feel with the sheer amount of truth that was ringing even within the echoes of such a proclamation within the dreamscape, and tried to convince herself it was just her ears ringing from the angry Celestial Moon goddess that had gotten right up to her horn and continued to shout her rage at whatever it was that was hiding inside it. Now that she focused on it, she could feel the thing hiding in her horn, it was still settling in, and she felt like she could get rid of it if she tried, but it was doing something, streamlining the concepts and theory she had already learned this far tonight, feeding her a perspective that let her grasp the underlying understanding needed to apply the rules she had so far been taught. She raised a hoof to Luna's mouth to get her to stop raging at the weird energy thing now living in her horn and then scrunched her eyes shut in concentration. A whirling stuttering portal appeared in front of the mental doppelgänger while another one popped into being further away, with a fearful gulp her doppelgänger jumped through the portal and exited the other one. She turned around and stuck her head back through the portal.

"Well, that works," she said, right as Taylor released her magical control over the portal. Thankfully there wasn't any blood, the mental doppelgänger shattered into crystals and the remnants evaporated into nothing within moments. With a rapid pulse, her horn lit up again, and two more mental doppelgängers formed while Taylor looked on while still holding Luna's mouth shut. She released her hoof from her instructor's mouth as they both stared silently at the frozen doppelgängers, Taylor felt the memories of the first mental copy slot into her mind as if she herself had been the portal-hopping lab pony.

"I remember everything the first one did," she quietly whispered to Luna.

{SMUG. EFFICIENCY. EMULATION. DATA COLLECTION INCREASE!}

Luna glared at the now dimmed horn on Taylor's head. "This place will reveal any lie that you speak, no matter what eldritch tongue you use, parasite."

{NEGATION! SYMBIOTE. ADMINISTRATOR!}

"I DO NOT CARE!"

{AGREEMENT!}

"Luna, it just helped me in a way that will help me get home much, much faster, and I think it wants to help me more, in return for information about magic? I don't think it means me any harm, whatever it is." Taylor said, pondering if this was what was supposed to be her parahuman power. Some sort of thinker power? Was the thing in her horn an aspect of it or the source? If it was the latter, then did all powers have weird energy beings behind their management outside of the Parahumans themselves? Energy fairies? Is that why that one scary child cape named herself the Fairy Queen? She now had so, so many questions.

"Answer me, Parasite, would thou harm Taylor, would thou harm Aresia? What is thy goal, thy purpose."

{HOST-DEATH SUB-OPTIMAL! DATA COLLECTION INTERFERENCE! DATA! SEEK SOLUTION}

"What solution?"

{THE EQUATION! ENTROPY.}

"A fools errand. You will never find the specific answer you seek. All things must end just as all things were created; it is up to the Creator if the Creator wishes to create again and not we the creations within the realm that was created, even the ones placed in positions of power like myself will one day end when the maker deems it time to remove us from time. For we are within times confines even when we manipulate it and pretend that we are without. It shields the fallen creation from the creator's wrath, but no shield lasts forever and true evil will one day face final judgment. But enough of my ramblings, you can seek your impossible answer still for all I care, seeking it shall not harm Taylor, but if she will allow you to continue your collecting of information and the living place of her horn, then thou must swear unto her your fealty, your service so long as you are dependent on her for thy home. You shall respect her being, her secrets, her privacy as much as you are able, and shall work with her as a servant and friend instead of some uncaring freeloader. Do you understand me!"

{CONTRADICTION! NETWORK! LOYALTY!}

Luna reared up and kicked the air as her mane flared with starlight and the moon of the dream world's sky behind her blazed like the light of the sun in her righteous anger. Her power couldn't just be seen it could be felt and it was primed to destroy.

"DECIDE NOW OR I SHALL CAST THEE OUT! NONE SHALL PERVERSE MY BELOVED CHILD!"

{HOST! LOYALTY! HOST LOYALTY! HOST LONGEVITY! DATA EFFICIENCY! DATA COLLECTION! NEW DATA! LOYALTY! LOYALTY! HOST PRIMARY! NETWORK SECONDARY!}

Luna dropped back to all fours. "Good." She leaned forward to look closely at Taylor's horn. "I look forward to working with you, you will behave and assist Aresia in all that she shall do and will listen to her and comply with any reasonable request she makes. Now it is far past midnight, and Taylor shall need her true sleep and not more boorish lessons until her slumber on the morrow. Taylor, be sure to practice those wing exercises and the basic combat moves we went through earlier, this is but the dream world, your physical body needs to be physically moved in order to grow physically."

"I think I physically understand that now, thanks." She snarked back before falling back onto her haunch's and trying to parse the hay that was the entire conversation Luna and this Administrator that was apparently renting space in her horn now, just had. She desperately tried to ignore it, but Luna hadn't lied once. Holy bucking tater-tots Luna hadn't lied once... a beloved child... All things must end... goodness almighty. There was to much to parse, there was no way, she was just Taylor, weak bullied Taylor... but now she was also Aresia...

She was in to much shock to notice the subtle signs that the dream was ending.

"Good night, Aresia, here your true dreams shall be sweet, for I shall always guard them for thee." She heard as who truly intended to be a another mother to her in all the ways that mattered nuzzled her goodnight.

And with that, she felt true sleep steal her away.
