Chapter 13: Learning Ice Magic

Year: X752. 32 years till Canon begins.

Cade POV:

After I finished crying my heart out having finally have learning my birth magic, my mother and Makarov left the room leaving me with Porlyusica.

"Well I hope you've learned your lesson young man." She addressed me as she began to walk out of the room.

'Wait she's not going to give me a huge rant?' I thought in surprise as she made it to the door. She did turn her head round to see me one last time before she left.

"Thank you for your help in the village back there. I would have died if not for you." She spoke out at me.

"Your welcome, it's just that-"

"Now listen here! You better not try a stunt that like ever again! You should wait until you have a good grasp on your magic and not run blindly into danger! Do you have any idea how worried I was when I saw you in the village back there? I nearly died in fear of what would happen to you…" She ranted on giving me an evil glare.

'Oh… there's the rant...'

Porlyusica then turned her head back around and left the room, closing the door behind her.

And so I was left alone to my own thoughts. I had… Ice Magic? Honestly that's not a huge far cry from what my father had for his magic. I guess that's how I stopped that huge wave of fire back at the village. I did feel really tired after that, so I could have possibly sank all my magic power into that one attack and then it left me exhausted afterwards.

I was quite excited and giddy to learn how to use Ice Magic. Would I be able to cast and send huge pillars of ice towards my opponents? Could I survive in freezing conditions? Maybe I would be able to freeze my enemies on the spot…? Ok that last one is a bit extreme, I'll admit… I'd only do it if I knew I wasn't going to be killing them and that they could still breathe in there.

As I was thinking all of this, a nurse came into the room I was in and gave me a kind smile. "We must need to perform one last checkup on you and if everything is ok then you are free to go." She informed me happily.

"How long was I out for?" I questioned.

"About a few hours. You were found unconscious and then slept through the whole night and then woke up a few minutes ago." She confirmed as she made her way over to me. She then sat down on a chair next to me and raised her hand to my chest. She then closed her eyes and began to focus. I could then feel a strange wave on energy wash over me, and then as quick as it came, it left. Magic perhaps?

The nurse opened her eyes and smiled at me. "Good news. You don't have any serious injuries left, that means you are free to leave now!" She smiled happily, as she then left some clothes on the bed for me to get changed into. She then left the room and closed the door behind her.

'Well if I've only been unconscious for a few hours and it was during the night, then I suppose that Lilly and Gildarts wouldn't have heard the news.' I mused. It's probably for the best, as they would both panic a lot and then rush over here to see me and not get any sleep. I then got up from my bed and began to change into the clothes the nurse left for me.

When I was dressed, I left the room and I saw Master Makarov and my mother out in the hallway. When they saw me they smiled and I ran up to them. "I'm all better now! Now I can leave this place!" I said excitedly.

"That's excellent Cade! I'm glad you didn't need to stay an extra night there. Means I might have had to inform Gildarts about the unfortunate news." Master said to me.

"Well we better get going Cade. Master Makarov and I agreed that it would be best if you came back home for the day." My mother spoke putting a hand on my shoulder.

"What about the guild members Master?" I asked curiously to him. "Won't they be curious as to where I've gone?"

Makarov just waved his hand in front of me. "Don't worry. If they ask, I'll just say you were feeling a little sick." He said reassuring me. "Oh by the way Cade, I left a present for you back at the manor. Consider it a very late birthday gift." Master winked as he then walked away down another corridor.

"What's the gift?" I turned curiously to my mother.

"It's a surprise! It's best you see it when you go in. Makarov left it in the lounge for you." My mother said as she led me out of the hospital.

'Well this gift will probably be good then if Master Makarov was the one that left it for me. I wonder what it is?' I thought in my mind, as we began to make our way out of Magnolia and back up to the manor.

When we got there, I saw Charles and Pierce tending to the garden bed outside the manor. When they saw me they both looked stunned and then relieved to see me. I'm guessing my mother has told them about what has happened to me last night. It would have been hard not to considering I never really came home that night.

"Ah! Sir Philipe!" Charles cried out with a smile.

"You're out of the hospital!" Pierce said happily.

"Yep! Hey uh… I'm sorry to scare you like that last night. You must have thought I was seriously hurt." I told them with a bit of shame in my voice as I did.

"No need to worry Sir Philipe! Makarov told the three of us when he came round that you were not dying or seriously injured. He just needed to take you to the hospital to make sure the dark wizards did not leave any lasting inside effects to your body." Charles reassured me, with Pierce nodding his head at that.

"Ah ok. Hey what gift did Master Makarov leave me?" I questioned with a mischievous tone. However, before they could answer that, my mother just gave them a glare which shut them up.

"It's a surprise! Why don't you go in and see it now!" She said, irritated by my impatience with a tint of annoyance in her voice. I didn't see anything wrong with that, so I ran into the house and went into the lounge and saw a book on the table.

Ice Magic – Learning and Refining

My eyes winded in delight as I saw the title book. Master had came through for me yet again! Sure I can't be at the guild today, but that doesn't mean that I can't learn some magic while I'm here right? I picked up the book and headed up to my bedroom to start reading it.

When I got up there, I placed the book on the wooden desk in the corner in my room and sat down on the chair at the desk and opened the book to the the first page.

I thought did occur to me right now. I have now have two different magic books to study. One of them was a book which I could easily read and learn from, the other was a very old spell book that required me to translate and decipher to read it. I had to choose. What did I want.

To me, the choice was obvious.

I would (for now) focus on refining my Ice Magic and making sure that I could properly use it. Then after that, I would go back to properly translating Malvel's book.

As I looked to the first page of the book in front of me which was the blurb, I saw that the first page had a quick introduction to the properties of Ice Magic, the second page had what you required to fully learn Ice Magic and the third page showed the potential of Ice Magic later down the road. Any page after that included more advice on Ice Magic, as well as commonly used ice attacks that had been recorded over the years.

The page of properties of Ice Magic wasn't all that interesting to me, nor did it seem all that important to me either. It mostly just talked about how Ice Magic is formed and how there is slight variations of ice magic, like Ice-Make magic and Ice-Link magic. I was learning basic Ice Magic, so that section wasn't entirely all that useful to me.

Next, there was the page of what you require to learn Ice Magic. I was surprised to find that this page was much more detailed that I first imagined. Instead of a quick joking mention of "making sure you were hydrated before starting", it instead gave a large list of things that you need to make sure you are good at to advance your Ice Magic potential. Some of the more important ones were listed up in their own section of the page.

Patient Mind

Focused Attitude

Staying Hydrated

Good Sense of Balance

Remaining Calm

Most of these seemed like capable feats I could achieve with some good practise. I was always focused and ready to commit myself to things, take Malvel's spell book for example. Staying hydrated felt a bit more like a joke, but I'm not exactly going to be fighting while being dehydrated all the time. I've always felt like I was good at remaining calm in tough situations. Back at the village I was a little bit scared of what might happen to me in there, but my need to protect those in the village overpowered that.

Finally there was a good sense of balance and having a patient mind. I wasn't sure what a "good sense of balance" meant exactly, and then there was having a patient mind. I wouldn't say I'm outright impatient 24/7, but if I knew something was there and I could do it, take it, or go there; I would do it without hesitation.

I did always try to eat my breakfast and dinner as fast as I could, but that was mostly because I was a hungry boy! You can't blame me for that right?

However, I did have a habit of always running to my destinations if I was able to. It would more often than not involve the person with me to yell at me to come back. The worst thing was… I always kept doing it… because I was impatient.

'Eh, I'll deal with that eventually.'

Putting that aside for now, I turned to the page that explained the potential of Ice Magic. I found that I could create all sorts of things from my ice like bullets, claws, pillars from the ground, shards of frozen ice, ice cubes, fire beams of ice and so much more. I could also use my ice to freeze things, like the air around me and make it colder. This would make people shiver and will make it harder for them to launch attacks at me.

When I continued to look at the page, I was completely blown away by the power of Ice-Make magic. As the term for that magic is "Make" then the limit of what you can make is your own imagination! From what I can understand from the previous pages, Ice-Make is a lot harder to master than regular Ice Magic.

I spent the next hour and a half reading through the rest of the book, making sure to take in the information I saw. After reading through it, I got a little excited to to test out my new magic and so headed downstairs to go out into the back garden and see if I can fire off a basic ice spell.

While walking outside, I ran into my mother, who was just coming inside the house.

"Cade. I'll be going out for a while is that ok? I'll be back before dinner time." She informed.

"Fine by me!" I said, as I hugged her before continuing outside.

I looked for a good place to test my spell. I saw a old tree against the stone wall at the back of the garden and moved towards it. I made sure I was a good distance away from the tree so I had room to fire the spell and see it hit the tree. I held out my right hand and focused my ethernano. Then, I took a deep breath. I planned to cast the most basic spell that I found in the book just then.

"Here we go! Ice Shard!"

And I was met with nothing.

Ah. Seems I need to practise a bit more then. I guess I didn't mind waiting another few hours or so until I get my magic down.

So for the next few hours, I made sure to focus my mind, body and magic to try to cast my Ice Magic successfully. I was met with several more failures time, after time; but I pressed on regardless.

It was a little irritating to see that I was still failing to cast the most basic ice spell in all of history! Of course I remembered that impatience probably wouldn't be helping me cast the spell any faster, so I had to take breaks every so often to calm myself down.

After about four hours of trying and failing, I took a deep breath, held out my hand and casted my spell.

"Ice Shard!"

Just then a shard made out of solid ice materialised out of thin air and flew towards the tree like a dart being thrown at a dart board. It hit the tree at good speed, as it was now stuck inside the tree not living an inch.

I… had done it! I had casted an actual proper spell! I mean sure the enchantments I've casted were magic as well, but it wasn't really a spell that sees everyday use, and it didn't really feel like I was properly casting spells.

What surprised me, was that I didn't really feel all that tired after casting that ice spell right there. I expected to be on the ground completely exhausted like how I was when I first casted my Kaen enchantment, but instead felt completely fine!

Choosing to explore this curiosity of mine, I aimed and fired another Ice Shard at the tree. This time I did feel a little bit more tired than when I first casted Ice Shard for the first time. My guess was that because I had been practicing enchantments and meditation for so long, my magic container had grown used to casting magic, and as such my Ice Shards spell didn't take that much effort to cast.

With my answers confirmed, I then began to focus my magic a bit more than I had before, as I was trying to now materialise two Ice Shards and fire them at the tree at the same time. I was able to do so, but this took a bit more magic out of me than before. I was still able to fire them off at the tree, which now left four shards of ice stuck in the tree. On the bright side they will at least melt.

'Huh. Guess it was worth practicing those enchantments after all.' I remarked, quite satisfied with how that turned out just there. I then turned around and headed back indoors to get some much needed relaxation after that.

After spending a few hours relaxing in the lounge reading a book, I heard a knock on the door. I waited for Pierce and Charles to answer it, only to remember that they had gone outside of the house, and therefore could not hear the doorbell. As such I walked over to the door to answer it, and was surprised to see Gildarts there.

"Oh, hey Cade! I heard at the guild that you were sick, so I came up here to see how you were." Gildarts greeted. "But it seems like you're ok now!" He said happily to me.

"Oh… er yeah… I wasn't feeling great today so I decided to stay at the manor." I replied awkwardly. It might be for the best that the whole guild doesn't know that I nearly died the other night.

It was just then I remembered what I had achieved today. "You wanna come in? I got something to show you." I grinned.

"Sure!" Gildarts nodded, as I moved aside to let him in the grand hall. When he made it inside he turned to me. "So what was it you wanted to show me?" He wondered.

I smirked and held up my hand, focused my magic and cried out my spell. "Ice Shard!" As after I said that, a shard of sharp ice materialised in thin air above my hand that I was holding up.

"No way! You awakened your magic?! And it's Ice Magic!?" He exclaimed with surprise and happiness.

"Yeah! It er… just happened to me today! I was just relaxing and then it just clicked to me!" I said, as I chuckled awkwardly.

"Nice!" Gildarts said, him taking my lie for granted there. "So what do you plan on doing with that bit of ice there?" He questioned.

"Huh?" I tilted my head in confusion.

"You know that bit there." Gildarts said pointing to the bit in the air above my hand.

"Oh. I… didn't think about that. I was just showing it off to you." I said sheepishly. "Erm… how do I get rid of it?" I said to Gildarts realising that I clearly still had a lot to learn.

"I don't know. I have Crush Magic, not Ice Magic..." Gildarts then started scratching his head, thinking for answers. "Maybe just focus it away? I mean I've seen wizards with ice make their attacks disappear if they don't want to cast them." He suggested with hope in his voice.

I then tried to reverse-engineer the magic from the Ice Shard back into myself. It felt like I was sucking all the energy out of it. It kinda made me feel like a leach in a weird way. This was successful nonetheless, and I was able to make the shard disappear into thin air.

"Phew. For a second I thought I would have to throw it outside to get rid of it." I chuckled to myself as I said that. "Good thing I didn't need to do that."

"Yeah. So anyway, now that you have awakened your magic… Do you think we could go on jobs together? It'd be nice to have a partner for them." Gildarts asked with excitement and eagerness.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I had just been asked to go on a job! And now I had actual magic, meaning I could say yes!

"Sure! How about we go tomorrow? I'd need to let my mother and master know before. But if they say yes, then I'll be at the guild tomorrow!" I answered happily.

"Alright!" Said Gildarts with enthusiasm. "Soon we'll be Fairy Tail's strongest team!"

"Wait, I thought your magic was really powerful?" I realised. "Why would you need a partner? Not that I don't plan on going back on what I just said, I'd still like to go with you."

"Because it does get a little lonely out there all by yourself on these jobs." Gildarts answered with a bit of sadness in his voice and a frown appearing in his face. "I'd be nice to have some company for once."

"Oh, I see. Well don't worry Gildarts, I'll be on this next job with you!" I said kindly, patting him on the shoulder as I did.

"Heh, thanks Cade." Gildarts smiled a little after saying that.

I then heard Gildarts and my stomach growl in hunger, both of us looking at each other in surprise when that happened.

"Wow I didn't know I was that hungry, guess all that magic took it right out of me." I said looking down at my stomach, before looking up at Gildarts. "You wanna get something to eat here? I don't mind."

"Really? Aw that'd be great Cade!" Gildarts said happily, as his stomach rumbled in agreement. I then led Gildarts into the dining hall, in which he got a good laugh at seeing the portraits of my father young and dressed up in some rather fancy clothing.

"Woah, is that really your dad up there? I've never seen him dress like that before!" He said with a laugh.

'Well I can't imagine him wearing a suit to Fairy Tail.' I thought, as I raised an eyebrow at Gildarts as he was looking at the paintings.

I then turned round to face Gildarts to ask what he wanted. "We've got some fruit, biscuits, some leftover pancakes…" I listed, as I tried to remember what else we had. But I didn't need to, as Gildarts already made his answer for me.

"Some pancakes and biscuits for me!" He requested with a wide grin.

"Sure! I'll go get them in the kitchen." I noddedas I walked into the kitchen to grab the food, before coming back into the dining room. I sat the food on the table and me and Gildarts took a seat at the chairs and began to eat away at the food.

As I was busy eating away at the food, I thought of an interesting question that had occasionally crossed my mind for a few days now.

"Hey Gildarts." I wondered, after swallowing a pancake. "What IS Crush Magic exactly? I mean I know it's powerful, but what is it?" I asked with interest.

Gildarts finished eating a pancake with a biscuit on it, and turned to me. "Well it's a really, really, strong type of magic that can destroy just about everything it touches. It can also crack the magic in most magic based attacks making them useless. I think it can also be used on a person to turn them into a bunch of small versions of themselves, but I haven't gotten to that point yet." He spoke as he picked up another pancake.

"I only know a few spells, as most of the other ones are way to powerful for me to properly learn yet." After saying that, Gildarts began to dig into another pancake.

"It's really that strong? I always heard that most of the really strong types of magic are really hard to control." I asked back to Gildarts, after he finished eating.

"Well… if I get a bit too excited, or forget to focus my magic right, I can end up destroying most of the things I touch, whether it be on accident or not." He said awkwardly looking away from me as he said it.

"That's why I don't really get many invites to most people's parties in the guild. I may end up destroying everything." He said with a sad tone and a glum face. "A small part of me wishes that I didn't have this magic, cause then I may actually get invited to these events!"

"Has it ever happened?" I asked quickly back to him.

"Well… only in jobs and twice in the guildhall." Gildarts said avoiding my gaze.

"Well then I don't see the problem with it!" I declared to the glum Gildarts, who looked up to me in surprise. "If you haven't destroyed another persons home before, then I don't see why people would refuse to let you come to their events or parties! Just because they're paranoid that you'll blow up their homes doesn't mean that you shouldn't deny your own magic!" I stated to the teenager firmly.

"You… really think so?" He said in shock at my comment.

"Well yeah! And I'm sure as you get older, people will stop seeing you as a teen who destroys their homes all the time!" I said with a smile on my face. "I'll bet you'll be a complete powerhouse in the future!"

Gildarts turned a little red in embarrassment. "Thanks for that Cade. It's nice to hear someone not criticise my magic for being too strong." He thanked giving me a smile.

"Anything for a friend and fellow guild member!" I said cheerfully. As we both then continued to eat away at the food on the table.

After we had finished eating, Gildarts departed from the manor, but I chose to go with him. I wanted to show Lilly my brand new Ice Magic that I had unlocked just yesterday. I had informed Pierce and Charles before leaving so my mother knew I would be gone if she came back. When me and Gildarts made it to Kardia Cathedral, we each had to go in different directions to our destinations.

"Well, I'll see you tomorrow then for our first job!" I cheered to Gildarts.

"Yeah, I'm looking forward to it!" Gildarts spoke with a smile. "I'll be heading back to the guild in a bit, so I'll check out the jobs there. I'll try to get one that isn't too far away from here. Also I'll try to let Master know about the job." He continued.

"Sounds great, I'm looking forward to it as well. It'd be cool to see what your magic can do." I agreed nodding my head.

"Well you'll have to wait another day to see that!" Said Gildarts as he walked away. "Later Cade!" As he disappeared into Magnolia's streets.

"See ya Gildarts." I said, as I then began to walk in the direction of Lilly's house. It was around 4:30pm now so I had only an hour or so that I could spend there, before it got too dark and mother would probably scold me after being home so late after last night.

When I made it to Lilly's house, I knocked on the door and was greeted by a surprise person. Cornelia, Lilly's friend.

"Cade?" Cornelia said in surprise. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to see Lilly. Got some big news to share with her – and you I suppose now that you're here." I answered to her.

"Ooh yes! Why don't you come in then." Cornelia replied as she stepped to the side and allowed me to enter the house. We both made our way into the living room of the house and I sat down on the couch in the room. Cornelia then sat on a chair opposite me.

"In case you're wondering, Lilly's out shopping with her mother but she'll be back in a bit. So what have you been up to since I last saw you? It's certainly been a while." She said with a smile on her face.

"Oh boy… quite a lot." I chuckled nervously. I then filled her in on the details of the last month and a half. It began with me finding out that my father had died on an S-Class quest. Cornelia gasped in surprise. Seems Lilly hadn't told her about that... Then I mentioned how Master Makarov helped me overcome the grief with my father's death, while also showing me an ancient spell book that held rare Enchantment Magic.

I thought it'd be best if Cornelia didn't find out that it was an ancient wizard that once owned the spell book, I did trust her, but Master didn't want me telling everyone I knew about it. After that I mentioned how I learned some basic Enchantment Magic, meeting Porlyusica (in which Cornelia was sniggering at how I got hit by a broom), and learning how to mediate and focus my ethernano.

I didn't however, tell her that I had almost died last night, and how that had awoken my actual magic. I was waiting for Lilly to come back and then I'd reveal the truth about that.

After I had explained all of that I heard the front door open, and heard the voices of Lilly and her mother. But then I heard a voice I didn't expect to hear. My mother.

"…No, no I don't believe in that conspiracy. The town is just fine from what I've seen in the past few days." My mother debated to Lilly's mother.

'What!? Why's my mother here? What exactly are the odds of this?' I wondered in surprise.

Just then, Lilly came into the living room and saw both me and Cornelia sitting down. "Oh! Cade's here!" She said loud enough for both mothers to hear.

"Oh?" I heard them both say, as they then came into the room. My mother saw me and let out a small gasp of surprise.

"Cade! Well what are the odds of this I suppose? I was simply out shopping, and decided to tag along with with some friends I ran into." She said, as she sat down next to me on the couch.

"Oh, I just thought it would be good to tell Lilly what I've been able to do since yesterday." I said to mother. I then gave her an assuring look, to tell her that I wasn't revealing everything that occurred last night.

"Huh? What have you done?" Wondered Lilly with confusion.

"Yes, I'm quite curious too." Spoke Lilly's mother.

"Heh, check this out! Ice Shard!" As I said that, a shard of ice materialised in thin air above me. Leaving the two girls and two women a bit surprised at what I had done. "Ta da!"

"WOAH! Ice Magic!" Lilly shouted in happiness and disbelief, with her jaw on the floor.

"Oh? I didn't think you'd be able to cast it again so soon." My mother said with interest.

"Wait, you have Ice Magic? Since when!?" Cornelia demanded.

"Oh my! Well done there Cade." Came the approving voice of Lilly's mother.

I chuckled upon seeing their reactions. That's about how I expected them all to react. "Yeah, I unlocked it last night when I was mediating. I then practiced it again today, and now I can cast Ice Magic!" I lied happily, as I then de-materialised the bit of ice I summoned.

"So are you going to go on jobs now?" Questioned Lilly eagerly.

"Yeah, I'm going on one tomorrow-"

"What? You're going on one tomorrow? When did you decide this?" Came the now stern voice of my mother, who was now giving me a glare.

"Oh… erm… I decided today to go with Gildarts on his next job which is tomorrow." I replied nervously. "Is that a problem?"

"I just… I don't…" My mother took a deep breath. "Do you really think you're ready for a guild job yet? You have only just learned your magic." She said, almost forgetting that there were three other people in the room with her and me.

"Yes! I need to get experienced at magic, and the book master gave me said staying active is the best way to get better at Ice Magic! What better way is there to do that going on job requests?" I rebutted with determination.

"You could always practise at the manor?" My mother said, shutting down that line of argument I had formed. "Besides you can't be going on these jobs by yourself you ne-"

"I won't be by myself! Gildarts will be there and he said he would help me." I interrupted, cutting her off.

"He will?" Upon hearing that, my mother did look a bit less serious than she was before.

She then pondered this for a while. "Hmm… how about this? Tomorrow I'll come with you to the guild and we can let Master Makarov decide whether you should go or not." She said with a nod.

I thought about this carefully. 'Hmm… would Master let me go with Gildarts? I suppose it depends on the type of job he picks up. As far as Master Makarov is aware, I've only just learned my magic.'

"Ok, deal." I nodded. I saw no real better option.

"Good." My mother said. "I think that's a fair way to decide whether you are ready or not." She then remembered that there were in fact three other people in the room, and quickly turned to see them. "Oh… erm, I'm sorry you had to see that you three." She apologised in embarrassment.

"It's ok June…" Came the voice of Lilly's mother with an awkward chuckle.

"Can we go to the guild tomorrow and see if Cade's ready or not?" Lilly asked to her mother.

"If so can I come?" Piped Cornelia.

"Oh I don't see why not. You'd both have to be up early though." Said Lilly's mother to the both of them.

"Well ok then!" Spoke my mother standing up from her chair. "I suppose I'll see you all tomorrow then." She then looked down at me. "Coming Cade?"

"Wait are we leaving already?" I said with a bit of shock. "You just got here!"

"Oh I just needed to drop something off here, after that I was planing to head back to the manor." She replied as she made her way to the doorway, me deciding it would just be best to follow her.

"Well, I'll see you guys tomorrow then!" I said as I made my way to the door, with my mother opening it.

"Bye Cade!" They said farewell as I left.

So, I made my back to the manor with mother. The journey back was… very quiet. Mother didn't say a single thing to me. I tried to think of a conversation topic, but I was struggling hard with that. There were only really two things that could stop me from going on this quest tomorrow.

The first was Gildarts accidentally picking up an A-Class quest from the job board and the second was Master Makarov simply not having enough faith in me. If that was the case, then I would be a bit sad. However, this was a lingering question that would have to wait for tomorrow, as we made our way back to the manor.

"Well, here we are guys. This is Fairy Tail!" I announced to Lilly and Cornelia, who were next to me.

When I woke up, I had a big breakfast, got dressed, informed Pierce and Charles as to what was going on, and then me and my mother made our way to Cornelia's and Lilly's to pick them up and take them to the guildhall. Currently Lilly's mother and my mother were behind us, and were talking about something that I didn't understand. Probably just lady stuff.

"Wow, didn't know it was that big. I mean I've seen it before, but never this close." Cornelia said in awe at the buildings size.

"Yeah it's huge." Added Lilly with happiness.

"Well shall we go in?" I asked, while also raising my voice loud enough for the ladies at the back to hear.

"Ah yes, let's head in." Said my mother as both ladies moved to where we were. I opened the doors to the guildhall and the five of us walked in. The guild at this time in the morning was quite quiet. Hardly anyone was in the building from what I could see.

There were a few people at the benches, some talking away at each other, while others just drank ale and were having a good laugh. I then noticed Master Makarov siting on the counter of the guild, with his eyes closed and his arms crossed. Gildarts was next to him and was holding a piece of paper that looked like a job request in his hands.

Upon seeing us, Gildarts nudged Makarov and he then opened his eyes to see us, while looking a bit surprised and seeing an additional four people there. As we made it up to them he then cleared his voice and addressed me.

"There you are Cade. I was just thinking about you there. Who are your friends?" He asked kindly looking at Lilly, Cornelia and Lilly's mother.

"They're my friends, they just came here to see me off, if I'm allowed to go on the job that is." I said nervously at the end.

"Yes. Gildarts told me all about that. He said he thinks you're ready for jobs now that you have learned magic." Makarov said turning his head a little to look at Gildarts, who looked a little nervous about all of this from what I could see. "Gildarts, the request." Makarov said sharply to Gildarts.

Gildarts then quickly handed Makarov the piece of paper. Master Makarov then looked over it, before handing it to me. I then look a look at it.

'Ok, doesn't seem that bad, just stop a thief in the area.' I was happy that Gildarts didn't pick an A-Class quest.

"What do you think? Do you think you can do it?" Makarov inquired with a serious tone.

"Maybe not by myself… But I won't be alone. Gildarts will be with me! Me and Gildarts can do it, we're a team after all!"

Makarov nodded his head at my comment. "It's good that you recognised that you would need Gildarts help for this job. If you had said that you alone could do it, I would have been rather hesitant to give the job to you two. Mainly because you wouldn't have considered what it means to be part of a team in this guild. You mustn't ever forget about your friends here." He concluded with a small smile forming on his face.

"Does that mean…?!"

"Yes, you and Gildarts can go on this job quest." Makarov said smiling at me, before looking at my mother and giving her a nod of approval.

"Yeah alright!" Gildarts responded happily. "Let's get going then!" He said as he began to run towards the guild doorway, before then remembering he wasn't alone for this job. He then awkwardly moved back to where I was a little embarrassed by his excitement.

"I just gotta say bye to everyone here then we can go." I said patting Gildarts on the shoulder, before I turned to see everyone who had came to see me off.

"Good luck Cade!" Cheered Lilly excitedly.

"Yes, please be careful." Nodded Lilly's mother to me smiling.

I could see that Cornelia on the other hand, was busy looking in the general direction of where Gildarts was for some reason. She then noticed me and quickly turned to face me. "Ah! Yes, good luck Cade!" She said a little embarrassed.

My mother then approached me and gave me a big hug. "Please be careful out there. Promise me you will." She requested softly.

"I will, I promise!" I ensured her, returning the hug to her, "I'll be back before you know it!" I broke the hug from her and turned to Gildarts. "Well, you ready then?" I asked with confidence.

Gildarts just scoffed. "I was born ready!" He said, as we then both made our way to the guild's exit.

"Bye guys! I'll be back soon!" I shouted to them.

"Bye Cade!"

With my head held high, me and Gildarts raced out the door of the guildhall to complete our first job as a team.

And there we have it! Cade has learned how to use his magic properly. Now he and Gildarts are off to do their first job together! Here's hoping it's a normal first job…

Anyway, I'll see you all in the next chapter! I hope you all enjoyed this one!

Also two things of importance that I would like to quickly mention before I end things here:

The first is that this story has now passed 1000 views! Thank you all so much for that! It may not be much compared to many other stories on the Fairy Tale section, but it still makes me happy that over 1000 people have viewed this story!

The second is that we got our first review!

Guest - Thank you for that! I hope you continue to read and enjoy the story!
