"Kidnapped?" Edmund asked once he had a moment alone with Lucy. She came in to his room with food shortly after he woke up again. "You went with 'kidnapped'?"
"Well, it was the best explanation," Lucy explained as she sat at his bedside. "Sorry we didn't talk it over with you before hand. Dad was wanting to learn how we found this wonderful land. Not to mention, Peter needed an excuse to have two British Guards posted at your door. He told Dad that the Witch's followers tried to kill you."
"Why did he do that?" Edmund was grateful for the kind gesture, but it didn't make sense. "I thought Peter-"
"Because he wanted to spare your feelings, that's why." Lucy said. "He knows how much you want Dad to think highly of you. At least be grateful, will you?"
"Yes, I suppose I will," Edmund agreed after a moment. "Thank you for bringing me breakfast."
"You're welcome." Lucy said and again, he couldn't help feeling annoyed again that they were now about the same age. "When you're done eating, I will read you a chapter or two out loud. As long as it's not boring, mind you."
"…why?" He knew Lucy hated reading to him.
"Because Peter and Susan are fighting again and I would rather stay here."
"Oh? What are they fighting about?"
Upon hearing this question, Lucy sighed and stole a slice of fruit off her brother's plate. "The wardrobe that was in here, Peter ordered it moved to the Western Woods. But he didn't tell Susan he left the doors open-"
"What happened?"
"And now there are German soldiers wandering Narnia."
Edmund was speechless. How could Peter do that? What in the world was he thinking? And how come Peter was always telling him that when-
"Susan was furious," Lucy continued, taking a piece of toast for herself. "Marmalade?"
"Sure," Edmund handed the jar to her with a table knife.
"Because see, the Germans didn't go North to the ruins of Witch's castle. I thought Peter would at least try and lure them there. Susan had it destroyed while you were gone, but what remains could collapse any moment. But instead, the Germans are wandering south instead; and from what I heard, several Narnians have died. Susan won't tell me more than that, but asked if she could keep my healing cordial for the time being."
"That might be a good thing."
"Agreed. Anyway, that's what the two are fighting about at the moment. Peter says he has the matter under control and has a plan. However, Susan thinks he was foolish to put Narnian lives in danger. Honestly, I wish to side with Susan, but know it's better to stay out of the matter."
"Smart idea," Edmund said, knowing his two older siblings could really cause a verbal ruckus. The two of them sat in silence as they finished sharing the tray of food. "Lucy?"
"What?"
"I had a strange dream," he knew she was the one person who would understand. "Aslan came to talk to me and…" Edmund continued to tell her what the Lion said, what he learned, and the promise that was made. "What do you think Peter wants? And do you think Aslan saw the Germans invading?"
Edmund didn't the war to follow him or worse, have Narnia taken over by the Third Reich.
"I am sure he did," Lucy was now beaming with joy. "Aslan knows everything. As for what Peter wants, I don't know. But I would listen to Aslan if I were you."
"Always," Edmund smiled, glad the Lion had brought the two of them closer.
"Even if he gives horrible advice," Lucy added, making her brother pause.
"What do you mean?"
"He's the one who told me to heal everyone at Beruna with my cordial." She said, glancing away from him. "But it didn't work. I learned last year… so many died. The ones I healed- and there's you. I made it worse. All of it. I am so sorry."
"Lucy," Edmund reached out to take her hand, making her flinch at his cold touch. "Don't be sorry. Sometimes… trying to save people doesn't work out."
"And who have you tried to save? Yourself?"
"No," Edmund tried to not let her word sting, but they did. "When I was with the Witch, she turned people into stone, even though I… I tried to save them. At least your attempts to save people were somewhat successful."
"Somewhat. I don't want that, Edmund! I wanted…everyone to be alive and happy. I thought they were, but Susan lied to me!"
"I am sorry she did." Edmund knew how it felt to be on both sides of that table. "I knew about Beruna as well- but she told both Peter and I not to tell you, because she didn't want you to be sad or think you failed."
"Because I did." Lucy concluded sternly. "When the Germans are defeated, I am going to go find the fire flowers and try and create an even better tincture."
Edmund wished she would understand, but if that what she wanted… "I will come with you, if you would like."
"Thanks." Lucy sounded grateful. "But I might ask you to stay home if you can't stop making it snow."
"Wish I could," he really did. "So maybe instead, I can help you get there. Planning and reading maps and stuff."
"That would be nice. Thank you, Edmund."
It was after Lucy brought Edmund lunch that Peter and Susan came by to talk with him. Or, more aptly put, yell at one another while trying to speak with him. Lucy had been in the middle of a chapter when the two of them came marching into Edmund's bedroom. Susan was still yelling at Peter when they entered and after a brief 'hello, how are you feeling?' they went back to their argument.
"I can't believe your plan!"
"That's why I didn't want to tell you- because you would think it was foolish, Su-"
"It's beyond foolish! Not to mention completely-"
"Well, what else did you want me to do?" Peter demanded to know, making Lucy and Edmund share an exasperated glance. Couldn't these two go away so they could finish the chapter in peace? "Leave Dad in France to be captured by the Germans?"
"No, but you shouldn't-"
"Again, like I said earlier, I had to do something, Susan. What if he went back to our world and dies, because the Germans are still there? In th-"
"So you bring them here? For us to deal with?! How irresponsible are you?" Susan nearly screamed at him. "Narnia is a medieval society! And the Germans, they have guns and grenades! What if they brought a tank-"
"They don't have one, Susan! I told you-"
"Well, do you know?!" She asked, making her brother pause.
"I don't." Peter surrendered that point to her. "But like I said, I know how to fix this. All of-"
"No. You're not doing that!"
"Says the one who wanted to fake her own brother's death."
"How dare you!" Susan sounded to be at the end of her rope. "My plan would have hurt no one as we would all know the truth! Yours on the other hand- I can't Peter. It's bad enough Edmund's cursed! I won't let you drag him into your problem."
"It's our problem, Susan."
"It's one you created!" She cried, glancing over at Edmund. "Don't do what he wants. Understood?"
"What does he want?" Edmund asked cautiously, knowing Lucy was also wondering if this was what Aslan was talking about.
"I know it's a huge ask," Peter began, coming over to the foot of the bed, "I know it is. But I want you to recreate the Witch's Wand and turn the Germans to stone."
A/N: I have come to conclude that Lucy's future profession is Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Anyway, I really wanted a scene between Edmund and Lucy that felt caring and sweet. As for Peter and Susan, it's best to let them fight it out. Also, the Witch's Castle is often forgotten. So, I fixed that. In either the next chapter or the next A/N I will explain what Susan did. Because sure, she could order it destroyed, but there's more to it than that.
