The rest of the school day passes by like normal, although Craig can't stop thinking of the conversation he had with Kenny, or how surprisingly deep Kenny's voice was. There was something about it that he just couldn't quite figure out. Maybe it was because of the strange interest he had taken up with him, that seemed to be steadily growing evermore in the most recent days. Or maybe it was because this had been the first time he had ever heard his voice. Whatever the case was, Craig couldn't stop thinking of him, or the conversation, although short, from replaying out over and over again in his mind.
The responses he got from him, weren't ones he was expecting, at all, and a small pang of frustration rises in Craig at how he was caught off guard by them so easily. A quick image of Kenny's eyes flash in his mind, and how normal they seemed despite how they looked before. Then Craig remembers the laugh he heard and the small creases that formed at the sides of Kenny's eyes, as his deep laughter penetrated him. The feeling from before comes back to Craig and he lets out a somewhat annoyed sigh as he turns to lie on his side in bed.
It was as if Kenny had been teasing him, in a way, before.
A faint burn plays on Craig's face and he turns his head into his pillow with an irritated groan. He wished he could just shut off his brain about all this for a short while. Later though, he gets his wish as he passes out to sleep.
When the next day arrives, for some strange reason he comes to the resolve of wanting to talk to Kenny again and not be caught off guard like he was yesterday. He felt like he needed to show Kenny that he couldn't be made fun of, or laughed at like before. Somewhere in his mind, this was the bizarre resolution he came up with, before he set off at lunch to find him, not having the chance to speak with him before in his morning class.
It takes up about half of the lunch break, before Craig is able to eventually find Kenny sitting outside on the bleachers, after searching the whole school. As Craig gets closer to him, he realizes that he doesn't know what he should even say to him. He briefly thinks of turning around and heading back to think of something, but the thought is quickly tossed aside as Kenny looks in his direction.
Not wanting to look like even more of a dumbass, he continues walking towards him at a slow pace, binding time to think of something. Kenny's gaze stays on him, never once leaving as Craig makes his way up the bleachers and eventually reaching only a few feet away from him.
There's a few seconds of awkward silence as Craig just stares back at Kenny, like an idiot, before he says something.
"Hey." Craig mentally slaps himself for how generic that sounded after standing there for so long in silence like he was choosing his words carefully or something. "I uh, wasn't done talking to you yesterday you know."
Got to play it cool, and not let him get the best of me again, Craig thinks.
Kenny looks forward, across the field, seeming to watch the track team practicing their runs. Craig is about to say something, annoyed that he may just be ignoring him again, but doesn't get the chance.
"Very strange," Kenny says quietly, in that deep voice again.
"What is?" Craig asks.
"You," Kenny replies.
"How?" Craig asks confused.
"You say that I'm following you, yet you come looking for me. I'd think you'd want to stay away. And it makes me wonder, just who is following who here."
"I-I'm not following you!" Craig says, his voice cracking a bit on the last word. So much for playing it cool.
Kenny looks at him and Craig can see the faint creases around the corners of his eyes, which instantly make him regret opening his mouth in response.
"What is it?" Kenny asks, looking back at the field.
"Huh?"
"That you weren't done telling me," Kenny adds.
"Oh, uh," Craig tries to collect his thoughts, after Kenny ended up getting the better of him again. "I just uh."
Craig's mind was pulling a blank, and he curses at himself inwardly for it and for Kenny causing it. He fidgets awkwardly with his hands a bit as he tries to think of what to say.
"You're not afraid?" Kenny asks, and Craig stops fidgeting with his hands.
"What do you mean?"
"After what you saw?" Kenny asks and looks at him. "You're not afraid?"
"I..." Craig trails off to think on his questions.
What he saw of Kenny, what he did. Part of him was still a bit unsure of it being real. Maybe that was why he wasn't as freaked out as he should be by him? Or maybe it was because of the strange interest he had in him? Or something else? He wasn't quite sure himself, although he did know that most people in his position probably would be freaked out by him to some degree, if not, even more so.
"Or maybe..." Kenny says and Craig looks back up at him. "You just really like seeing me."
"Wh-what?!" Craig says flabbergast, "No! That's not it at all!" he tries to give him a glare, despite his face slowly feeling like it was being burned in an oven. But he sees the creases appear around Kenny's eyes again and he quickly sticks up a middle finger at him. "Fuck you," he says, trying to sound angry. Although the slight waver in his tone said otherwise.
"I wouldn't mind that," Kenny says back, his eyes flicking up and down along Craig's figure.
The response isn't at all what Craig expects, and it shows as his eyes widen and the oven he's in, suddenly is turned up too fast on his face, causing it to redden in its higher temperature. And just as fast as he had stuck up his finger, he quickly hides it away, behind his now tense body. Kenny lets out a short deep chuckle and a strange wave of some sort passes quickly through Craig at it.
"Y-you know what?! Nevermind!" Craig gets out, after opening and closing his mouth several times. "I've decided not to tell you what my other thoughts on you are!" he turns and starts to head off. "I'm leaving!"
"I don't hear a 'no," Kenny says as Craig starts down the bleachers.
"It's a no!" Craig tells him, stopping to look back at him, before quickly looking forward and hurriedly making it down the rest of the bleachers, ignoring Kenny's deep laugh as he does so.
Well, so much for not letting Kenny get the better of him, or making fun of him again.
When their second shared class comes, Craig tries everything he can to avoid looking at him, but fails very miserably at it. Kenny on the other hand, was doing a fine job at ignoring him however and Craig isn't sure if he should be relieved or annoyed at it. Some part of him wanted him to look at him, because he wanted him to own up to making fun of him for some reason. He wasn't sure why, but there was a growing frustration he was slowly starting to build towards the hooded boy, who had been occupying most of his brain for the past week or so, since all the strange stuff around him started coming to light more. Most of it was probably from the lack of answers he gathered. And with his already two failed attempts at trying to hold a normal conversation with Kenny, he'd need to make sure to keep dead on track if he were to try for a third time.
As Craig thinks over on how to go about approaching him next, his wish from earlier is granted as Kenny glances over at him, which despite him wanting that before, Craig to quickly looks away now instead. He would need to make sure not to be distracted by his bizarre questions or answers next time either.
When school arrives the next day, Craig is determined to get some kind of answer to his questions out of Kenny, no matter what the cost. He would not let him keep making a fool out of him.
Clyde tries to approach him at lunch to talk about their usual friend group stuff, but Craig tells him he's busy and heads off in search of Kenny.
He doesn't find him at the bleachers this time and instead finds him sitting on some steps behind the school.
"For someone trying to prove they aren't following me, you're doing a terrible job at it," Kenny says and looks up at Craig as he approaches. Craig frowns, not wanting to get in to this mini debate with him again, and wanting to stay on track. "Take a seat," Kenny motions with his hand, pointing next to him. "I don't bite, unless you want me to." Craig thinks of denying the offer, but his feet are moving before he can say anything. He slowly takes a seat next to him, then places his hands together on his lap, before glancing at how close his knee now currently is to Kenny's. He's soon hit with the realization, that this was probably the closest proximity he had ever sat next to him before. "So what is it this time?" Kenny asks, and Craig looks up from their knees at him, seeing the other watching him now. "I thought you weren't going to tell me what you thought of me."
"Right," Craig says to himself and looks away.
"Or is it something else?" Kenny asks.
Craig glances back at him. Some part of him was still expecting to see his eyes glow again, but he hadn't seen them like that since that one day. Although he knew the reason as for why.
"About what you asked before, about me not being afraid..."
"It was nothing," Kenny says.
"But I—"
"Nothing." Kenny says and looks forward.
Craig lets out a frustrated sigh. Getting any information like this, wasn't going to be easy, that he knew. And he didn't want to push on about it either and possibly lose his chance at it. But how was he going to go about this?
"Do you... want to hangout?" Craig asks quietly.
Kenny keeps looking forward for a long while and Craig thinks he may not have heard him, but he turns to look at him.
"Hangout?"
"Yeah, sort of like what we're doing right now. Just sitting and talking," Craig explains. "I can come by and see you at lunch and stuff."
"Why?" Kenny asks.
"Why not?" Craig asks back. "And you better not reply with calling me strange again."
Kenny chuckles a bit.
"Do as you please," he says and looks forward again.
"I'll remember that," Craig tells him.
The two sit through the rest of lunch in silence. Although not awkward like before, more of a serenity kind.
From then on, Craig ends up spending almost every lunch with him for the rest of the week and into the following one. Which usually started when Craig would look for him and find him somewhere alone, before the two would exchange small talk for a bit, then fall into a calming silence.
Things went this way until Craig brought up the suggestion that they should hangout after school. He still hadn't learned much about Kenny as he seemed to be remaining very cryptic and short in his words to him. But he could tell at least, that Kenny didn't seem to mind having him around.
"What would we do?" Kenny asks to Craig's suggestion.
"Well we could do what we've been doing at lunch, like now, or we could, I don't know, walk around town and see the sights. Check out the stores and stuff, or see a movie or something," Craig says.
"A movie?" Kenny repeats.
"Yeah, we could see what's playing or something," Craig replies.
Kenny looks at him with a long pause.
"Are you asking me out?" he asks.
Craig's eyes widen at the question, and he nearly feels his heart stop.
"N-no!" Craig quickly stutters out, "Going to see a movie is something people do, when they hangout and stuff as well!"
"I thought it was something couples primarily do," Kenny says.
Craig's face starts to burn. For the most part, their conversations were pretty normal now, but these type of questions or responses from Kenny always seemed to catch him off guard still. And it didn't help that he would ask or say these types of things so seriously to him either.
"Friends do these types of things to you know," Craig mutters out quietly.
"Friends?" Kenny asks, "Is that what we are?"
"I guess so, I mean we hang out at lunch and talk and stuff. So yeah, I'd say we qualify as friends," Craig replies.
Despite him not knowing very much about Kenny still, they had talked enough by now where Craig felt like they were at least forming some sort of bond between them. However small it may be anyways.
"Okay," Kenny says.
"Okay what?" Craig asks confused.
"To everything," Kenny replies.
"That's helpful," Craig says sarcastically.
"Let's see a movie together," Kenny says and Craig's eyes widen in surprise.
"Um, sure when?"
"Today."
"Oh, well I'm not to sure what's playing but uh, okay," Craig says.
They talk about where to meet after school for awhile, but Craig ends up saying he'll skip last period so that they can head over earlier. Besides, it was only gym class, it wasn't like he was missing much. He also didn't want his friends asking a bunch of questions about where he was going either. And also knew he most likely wouldn't hear the end of it, if they found out who he was with.
As they reach the theater, Kenny looks up at it.
"I've never been in a theater before..." Kenny says and Craig looks back at him.
"Wait, you've never seen a movie before?"
"I've seen movies, I've just never been in a movie theater."
"So this will be your first time then?" Craig asks in surprise.
"Yeah," Kenny replies, "you'll be my first."
Craig looks away at that, and ignores the very blatant undertone comment in that sentence and continues walking.
"Well, hopefully it will be a good experience then. And you'll want to come again," Craig says absentmindedly.
"I hope so. I don't mind coming, if it's with you," Kenny tells him.
And it's only then does Craig realize what he said sounded like. Even more so, how Kenny replied to it. He glances at Kenny, and sees that familiar eye smile, before he looks forward again and makes his way to the ticket booth.
"Let's just see the movie alright?" Craig says and tries to push that annoying burning feeling down again.
In a quick attempt to push away what just happened, Craig chooses the first movie listed on the lineup, which is a horror movie, and he pays for their tickets. They skip the concession stand and just head right into the theater and take a seat in the back row.
"Why are we sitting so far back?" Kenny asks, placing his bag in the seat next to him.
"Because the back is the best place to sit. Also I don't like craning my neck in a weird angle only to have it be sore for several hours after the movie finishes," Craig says, doing the same with his own bag.
As Craig surveys the theater, he realizes that there's practically no one really there, except for three or four other people. Although that might have to do with school still going on and it being the middle of the week, and also works hours, but whatever the case was. At least it wasn't jammed packed.
"What is this movie about?" Kenny asks.
Truth be told, Craig had no idea, he just picked it because it was the first thing he saw and couldn't think of anything else. He was lucky though, because the movie was due to start shortly after buying the tickets.
As Craig tries to think of a response, the theater darkens and the screen starts to play its first trailer.
"Looks like we'll find out soon enough," he tells Kenny, seeing him glance around the now dimly lit room. "Also, a quick heads up since this is your first time, when the movie starts, we can't talk like normal, we'll have to be quiet so we don't disturb others." he informs and Kenny gives a slight nod.
As the final trailer plays, Craig looks down for a moment, to check his bag and make sure it's secured. As he does, he notices just how close Kenny's arm was next to his now. He only looks at it for a brief second before looking up at the screen again as the trailer comes to an end and the movie starts.
They watch the movie in silence and Craig realizes that he chose a movie about vampire hunters. Although the hunters were a pair of vampires themselves. The movie continues on and eventually gets to a point where one of the hunters stalks down a human woman and she screams as a pair of glowing red eyes appear in front of her from the shadows.
The glowing eyes cause an image to flash through Craig's mind and he glances at Kenny. He looks back to the screen when another scream is heard and just about lets out one himself, when a sudden deep voice enters ear canal so closely.
"Are you afraid?" Kenny asks.
Craig slowly turns to look at him, and is met by the sudden closeness of Kenny leaning towards him.
"Of what?" Craig asks back, his heart beating a bit faster now.
"Of that monster's eyes," Kenny replies.
Craig glances back at the screen just as the glowing of the eyes dim down as the hunter steps into the light some more.
"No." he replies.
Kenny looks at the screen as the hunter opens its mouth, and reveals a row of sharp fangs.
"What about its teeth?" Kenny asks.
There's a strange beat that skips in Craig's chest as he glances back at Kenny, and his gaze slowly travels from his eyes to his mask. Another loud scream from the woman on screen draws his attention back to it, as he sees the now pinned down woman try to escape, and he can't help but clench his fists a bit around the bottom of his jacket.
"No..." he replies.
"Are you sure?" Kenny asks, lowering his tone more. "Those teeth look like they might devour you whole."
Craig watches as the hunter bites into the woman's neck, and he fights the urge to clamp a hand over his own neck. He's met with Kenny's gaze as he looks back to him, and he swallows lightly and opens his mouth.
"I'm not afraid," Craig tells him.
Kenny watches him for a few seconds before turning his attention back to the screen.
"I see..." he murmurs.
Craig looks back to the screen as well after a few seconds and they watch the rest of the movie quietly.
After the movie ends and they exit the theater, Craig looks at Kenny.
"So how was that for your first experience?" Craig asks.
"It was... very loud." Kenny replies.
"That's how most movie theaters are," Craig tells him, "would you want to come again?"
"Maybe..." Kenny says.
"So what did you think of the actual movie anyways?" Craig asks as they exit the building. However, before Kenny can reply, Craig spots the all to familiar appearance of one of his friends walking down the street, Clyde. "Oh shit—" Craig says, and quickly grabs Kenny's arm, yanking him to hide behind the building.
He wonders what the hell Clyde was doing there, then realizes that school had probably let out by now. Great, Craig thinks to himself. Under most circumstances he would go and talk to him, but it was a bit different this time. He was with Kenny and he knew that, that alone would raise a bunch of questions, aside from him skipping class. Which Craig didn't feel like answering any of them right now.
He glances around the side of the building and sees Clyde continuing to walk down the street. He hopes that he wasn't spotted though and that he'll keep on going right on past him if he's lucky.
"Who are you hiding from?" Kenny asks leaning over his shoulder.
Craig quickly faces back around to him and is met again with his sudden closeness.
"No one!" Craig says and let's go of his arm, forgetting that it was still in his grasp. "I'm not hiding from anyone."
"You seem like you are."
"I'm not."
"Then why did you pull me behind a building with you?"
Craig opens his mouth, but nothing comes out. He can't think of an excuse to give him, because Kenny was right. And had caught him. As Kenny waits for a response, his form continues to linger near him. Craig would think that most people would have moved away by now, and not stand so close because of how awkward or uncomfortable it could make things be. But Kenny stays there and Craig's gaze stays down at how far his legs were from his own. He was unable to look at him for some reason in that moment. Maybe it was because he had lied to him or had been caught in one, he wasn't sure. Kenny slides one of his feet forward then and stops right in front of his. Suddenly, Craig's hyper aware of just how close Kenny is to him, as his other foot slides forward and he stands only mere inches away from him. Craig's gaze was now focused on Kenny's chest and he swore that he could feel Kenny's breath faintly touching his forehead. The closeness and light sensation of all this, causes another one of those bizarre feelings to pass through him.
"Lewd," Kenny mumbles.
"Huh?" Craig says confused.
"Sometimes when someone pulls somebody off to the side behind a building like this... it means that they want to do something lewd with them," Kenny explains and leans in closer to him. "Is that what you're thinking of, Craig?"
For a split second Craig's breath catches at the mention of his name being said by Kenny for the first time. It wasn't just how his voice was so deep while saying it, it was also at how he said his name. There was something to it, a certain tone and it makes that bizarre feeling in him grow all the more stronger because of it.
Kenny leans closer to him and Craig's bag presses against his back and wall as he tries to take a step back. He feels as Kenny brings his face to his neck and a hand is placed on the wall next to him. Craig tenses as Kenny's breath brushes lightly against his neck, in what felt like only a few centimeters away from it. However, where warm breath should have been, was instead a coolness. Although Craig can't fully focus on it, as his mind was preoccupied by how Kenny stood so goddamn close to him. But Kenny doesn't move any closer, and just stays in place, his breath brushing up against Craig a couple more times.
"U-um..." Craig murmurs, his body tensing a bit more as a strange burning feeling slowly starts to rise in him.
"Craig..." Kenny says again, his breath hitting his neck and causing goosebumps to form there.
The burning intensifies even more in Craig at that and he lets out a quiet shaky breath because of it. He faintly thinks he feels Kenny's body start to press against his, but isn't sure because his thoughts stop dead in their tracks when he hears, "Craig?" said again. However this time he knows it's not from Kenny, the voice is much to higher in pitch to be his. But when he figures out whose it is, he freezes and looks over Kenny's arm to see Clyde standing there watching him with a somewhat confused look on his face.
"I uh... thought I saw you or something, but I wasn't sure, so I came over to investigate but uh... I can see that you're kind of a bit busy at the moment," Clyde says and awkwardly turns to leave. "I'll uh, just be heading off I guess... or something."
As Craig realizes what this scene probably looks like to him, he quickly shoves Kenny away and rushes over to Clyde.
"This isn't what it looks like!" Craig says quickly, ignoring the hard burning in his face.
"Hey man, I didn't say anything about looking like anything," Clyde says looking back at him and raising his hands up defensively. He looks between the two of them once more, before adding, "But whatever you were doing, is your business."
"This—" Craig points to himself then Kenny in quick movements rapidly, "This wasn't anything! Nothing at all happened! Or was happening here, alright?!"
"Sure, alright," Clyde says, not sounding convinced at all.
"Look—Clyde," Craig says and grabs onto his arm, "you can't tell the others or anyone else about this alright?" he adds in a much more hushed tone.
"Why? I thought that nothing was happening here?"
"Nothing is, it's just—" Craig sighs, "look, can you please just promise me you won't tell anyone? As my friend—please?"
Clyde looks at Craig then Kenny and back again, before letting out a sigh of his own.
"Fine, I won't. But you better tell me what the hell is going on later," Clyde tells him.
"I will," Craig says, sounding relieved.
"Promise?" Clyde asks.
"Promise," Craig groans a bit.
"Well looks like I didn't see anything here at all!" Clyde suddenly exclaims. "I better get right on home then!" and he looks at Craig, giving him a small nod before turning to leave.
As Clyde walks away, Craig lets out a very long, exasperated sigh. He knew it wasn't going to be fun explaining this all to Clyde later, but at least he had his word that he wouldn't tell anyone else. At least he hoped he wouldn't. Clyde was usually half and half with these sorts of things.
"Nothing was happening huh?" Kenny asks.
"That... I just..." Craig looks back at him. "I just don't want my friends asking a bunch of questions about us—or uh—you I mean," he corrects, as the ending to that sentence didn't come out the way it should have.
"Why's that?"
"They can be a bit nosey at times, and get a bit, carried away with things as well."
"So you don't want them to know about us?"
"I..." Craig's face flushes a bit from the way that sounded and has to look off elsewhere because of it. "I just don't want them to overreact is all. They can be terrible at keeping things to themselves or just in our friend group at times, and sometimes they might go out and say something they didn't mean to say, without realizing it," he sighs, "and besides, it's not like they need to know every detail about my life, or who else I may choose to hang around with."
"So you're saying, you want me to be your secret?" Kenny asks.
Secret? Was that it? Was that what Craig wanted his bizarre relationship to be with him? It was true that he didn't really want to talk about Kenny to anyone else, although he wasn't quite sure why that was. He thought it might have something to do with him knowing something about Kenny that no one else seemed to know, but somewhere else inside him, he felt like it might be more than just that. Something that felt, almost important for some reason, as if something in his gut told him he shouldn't, for a reason that was still unknown to him. And he wonders if it's the same feeling he has, that seemed to drive this interest for him to want to learn more about him.
"It's not that, I just... I don't know, maybe," Craig says and shakes his head. "God it sounds so stupid in my head."
"What does?"
"It's nothing'" Craig says.
"You won't know if it sounds like that unless you say it," Kenny says, and Craig smiles to himself because of it.
"Maybe you were right before," Craig starts, and looks at him. "Maybe I do like to see you."
There's a few moments of silence before Kenny replies to that.
"Even if I'm dangerous?"
"Huh?" Craig says a bit confused.
"I'm asking," he takes a few steps towards Craig then. "Would you still like me, even if I was dangerous?"
Images flash through Craig's mind for a moment, but he doesn't stall when he says.
"I don't think you are."
Kenny walks towards him some more and stops when he's in front of him again.
"That's a pretty bold statement to make about someone who you don't know very well." he leans in towards him again, "What makes you think that I'm not dangerous?"
"Because," Craig says and looks him in the eye, "I think that if you really wanted to have hurt me, then you would've done so by now. You've had many opportunities to, so why haven't you?"
Kenny watches him for a few seconds, as if searching for something, before he leans away.
"You should get going home, it'll start to get cold out soon," Kenny tells him and places a hand lightly on Craig's cheek. "You wouldn't want to get sick now would you?" he asks and runs a gloved thumb once over it, before removing his hand.
The action isn't at all what Craig was expecting as his eyes widen from the brief, almost strangely caring touch.
"Ah, right," Craig gets out as he tries to compose himself, "I'll uh... I'll see you later." He gives an awkward wave as he starts to head off.
"Later," Kenny says as he heads off in the opposite direction.
When Craig makes it a good some meters away from him, he glances back once more to make sure he's gone, before placing a hand on his cheek where Kenny's had been not to long ago. He leans into it a bit more, before his hand slides down to his neck, where he remembered cool breath had touched it. The leftover sensations from that day left Craig's mind in a whirl. He wondered how Kenny could be both so aggressive and gentle at the same time. Although thinking back on it, Craig didn't really try to push him away until he saw Clyde, so he wasn't sure if that should count as aggressive or not.
As Craig walks back home, he knows that the thoughts of everything that happened on this strange day, would be on his mind, well in to the next.
