Prologue
We start our story with James and Lily enjoying their 1 year old child. Everything was fine, until it was not. James told his wife he would hold off the evil that had just entered their house, to go and hide with baby Harry.
Lily picked up Harry and ran upstairs to his room. The terror that was Lord Voldemort quickly found her though. She begged for her son's life, offering to die for him. The beast that called himself a Lord killed her anyway, then tried to kill the child.
As we all know, he was not successful. As the evil one dissolved into nothing but a thin black shade and fled out the window, there was a tiny gasp along with the crying infant.
See, the Potters were a noble and ancient house in their world, and as most noble and ancient houses in their world, they owned house elfs. Among those elfs there was another young couple who had a child several years ago. That young elf was now sitting in the corner of Harry's bed, invisible to the naked eye. She liked to pop into Harry's bed at night and hold the baby's hand and stroke his hair until he went to sleep.
Solmy, the young elf in the corner of the crib took Harry's hand to take him away from the danger, then realized that she wasn't sure she could take someone with her. She saw her parents do it before but was not sure how it was done.
There was a loud pop as Solmy went to tell her parents what had happened.
In a large manor house, there was a meeting called. Potter family elfs were meeting about what to do. The fourteen adult elfs from all the Potter houses were recalled for this meeting. The head Potter elf, Hanbey, was most un-elf like. Hanbey never squeaked, and he knew how to take charge of a situation. He took charge of the meeting, because he was an elf of action.
For Harry, there had been a tall black haired man crying over his Mother. That man had left after staring at Harry for several minutes. There was another black haired man, who Harry knew and was very happy to see. Sirius soothed and changed Harry. Then he cried and seemed to be thinking, but a very large man came and after exchanging some words the large man took Harry.
Hundreds of miles away fourteen elfs had decided to follow baby Harry and see what happened. There were a few elfs that had wanted to take the baby, and on the other end of the coin there were elfs that said caution was the wise choice.
It was Hanbey that made the decision and assigned duties. They would keep a patrol and stay by Harry's side, until action was required.
When a one year old child was left on a doorstep it was Potter elfs that stood next to him to block the wind and keep the warmth coming from their hands to keep the baby healthy.
During the next few years it was Potter elfs that truly cared for the baby locked in the cabinet under the stairs. They had made sure no sounds would escape from the cabinet after they saw how angry the humans got when Harry cried. The elfs fed, changed and generally cared for the growing child. Solmy was on hand to play with the baby during the long days in the small space, so life for the toddler wasn't as bad as it could have been.
