The Principality of Zeon declares all-out war against the Earth Federation, simultaneously launching surprise attacks on Zahn Province in Side 1 (L5), Hatte Province in Side 2 (L4), Moore Province in Side 4 (L5), and the lunar settlement of Granada. During the war's first major battle, the indiscriminate use of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons claims the lives of 2.8 billion space colonists (25% of the total human population) as the EFF garrisons and the colonies that house them are destroyed. The Principality of Zeon annexes the lunar city Granada as a launching point for future attacks against enemy targets.

The Principality of Zeon begins the setup of Operation British, the dropping of the depopulated Side 2 (Hatte Province) (L4) Bunch 8 (Island Iffish) onto the Earth Federation Forces' general headquarters Jaburo via a slingshot orbit around the Moon in an attempt to bring a swift end to the war.
Experimental Support Cruiser Jotunheim, a Zeon-conscripted civilian transport ship, makes rendezvous with a Papua-class transport and Musai-class light cruiser escort to obtain the experimental anti-ship cannon QCX-76A Jormungand, which can fire from outside any ship's range, with a range estimated at 300 km even when suppressed by Minovsky particles and an expected destructive power 10 times that of normal cannons. Along with the cannon, it delivers Engineering Lieutenant Oliver May, now assigned to the 603rd Technical Evaluation Unit aboard the Jotunheim.
Two Salamis-class light cruisers attack mid-transfer, destroying the Papua, which jettisoned its cargo before attempting to retreat. The Musai engages, destroying one Salamis and damaging the other, which retreats. The Jotunheim then recovers the QCX-76A Jormungand and Papua survivors.

The Battle of Loum; Zeon leaks false information that it was not satisfied with the result of Operation British and intends to try another colony drop, leading the Federation into a trap at Side 5 (Loum Province) (L1). Half of the EFF space fleet is destroyed, along with the entire Side and its 2½ billion inhabitants, with the exception of the Texas Zone colony, which is badly damaged. The debris field around L1 becomes known as the "Shoal Zone." 500 million combatants on both sides are killed in action.
10:30 - The Jotunheim sets up the QCX-76A Jormungand cannon beyond the normal range of battle, where the EFF can clearly see it, and is told the cannon will determine the outcome of the battle, but this is a diversion to draw attention from the deployment of the newly-developed MS-06 Zaku II.
10:45 - The QCX-76A Jormungand is ready to fire. The EFF commences firing upon the ZMF 1st Combined Fleet. The Battle of Loum officially begins.
The Musai-class light cruiser Shurebiki is destroyed, breaching the ZMF 32nd Fleet battle formation.
Chief Gunnery Officer Aleksandro Hemme decides to manually fire a test shot due to the lack of the promised targeting data from the observation ship.
Magnetic interference hinders manual targeting. The test shot misses all enemy ships but drags a Salamis-class light cruiser in its wake.
Engineering Lieutenant Oliver May and 1st Lieutenant Hideto Washiya launch in a shuttle to obtain targeting data themselves.
The QCX-76A Jormungand fires a second shot.
Before any members of the 603rd Technical Evaluation Unit can get close enough to the battle to be effective, Zaku units pass them by. Among them, 1st Lieutenant Char Aznable, who informs them via Morse code flashed from the MS-06 main camera, that the remainder of the battle is to be left to the Mobile Assault Force squadrons.
A Salamis-class light cruiser fires missiles at the QCX-76A Jormungand before being destroyed, injuring Hemme.
A heavily damaged Magellan-class battleship heads towards the QCX-76A Jormungand.
The third and final shot from the QCX-76A Jormungand destroys the Magellan-class battleship. Hemme later dies from his injuries.

Officials from both the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon meet in Scott City, Antarctica to discuss terms of peace. The Federation, having suffered major losses to its space forces at Loum as well as the loss of more than one billion of its citizens in less than a month, was ready to consider surrendering to the Principality of Zeon. However, during the negotiations, General Revil returns to Earth and delivers his "Zeon is Exhausted!" speech to the Federation Assembly, detailing the poor condition of Zeon's military after the heavy fighting.
In response to General Revil's public defiance against Zeon, the surrender agreement is instead reorganized as the Antarctic Treaty. According to the new agreement's terms, 1), The further use of NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) weapons, colony drops, and other weapons of mass destruction is prohibited; 2), Sanctity of neutral zones such as the Jupiter Energy Fleet, the permanent Lunar and Martian Settlements, and other unaffiliated nations and colonies is guaranteed (The lunar settlement of Granada is excluded from this as it was already under Zeon occupation at the time); and 3) Prisoners of war must be treated humanely by both sides, however, this is only applied if the POWs are uniformed officers/combatants.

Amidst the chaos of the battle, Tem Ray is sucked out into outer space but is able to survive while wearing his normal suit. He would be later rescued by an EFF recon team and brought to Side 6 (Riah Province) (L4) for treatment, but would suffer from mental issues due to oxygen deprivation.
16:00 - The Musai-class mothership of the ZMF Special Forces team, the Falmel commanded by Major Char Aznable, opens fire on Side 7 (Noa Province) (L3) Bunch 1 (Green Oasis). Most of the White Base crew are killed and Captain Paolo Cassius is mortally wounded. Ensign Bright Noa steps up as the new commanding officer of the White Base, and several of Green Oasis's young citizens including Amuro Ray, Sayla Mass, Kai Shiden, Hayato Kobayashi, Fraw Bow, and Mirai Yashima join the ship's crew to replace those fallen.
16:50 - The White Base escapes with the Operation V mobile weapons (1 RX-78-2 Gundam, 2 RX-77-2 Guncannons labelled "C-108" and "C-109", and 1 RX-75-4 Guntank) and over 100 civilian refugees, and sets out for refuge at the EFF asteroid base Luna II. ZMF Sergeant Slender is killed in action as Amuro's third kill.

The Battle of A Baoa Qu (Operation Star One); Kycilia Zabi executes Gihren Zabi for patricide and assumes command of A Baoa Qu, only to assassinated by Colonel Char Aznable. Major Johnny Ridden goes missing in action during the battle, presumed dead and promoted posthumously to Lt. Colonel. 1st Lt. Thomas Kurtz is killed in action. Anticipating the Principality of Zeon's defeat, Aiguille Delaz and his followers withdraw from the battle. The White Base is destroyed during the final stages of the battle, and the Operation V machines (the RX-78-2 Gundam, RX-77-2 Guncannon units C-108 and C-109, the RX-75-4 Guntank, and G-Fighter Unit 1) are left damaged beyond repair. The surviving crew of the White Base including Amuro Ray, Sayla Mass, Bright Noa, Mirai Yashima, Kai Shiden, Hayato Kobayashi, Fraw Bow, Katz Howan, Letz Cofan, Kikka Kitamoto, Oscar Dublin, Marker Clan, Job John, Omar Fang, Tamura, Sunmalo, Masaki, and Vammas escape the battlefield in shuttlecraft.

According to the terms of the Treaty of Granada, Side 3 (L2) is scheduled to relinquish its autonomy as the Republic of Zeon in 20 years time (by U.C. 0100) and be reabsorbed under the Earth Federation's jurisdiction.
