Chapter 4 Step Up

"Bell Cranel" POV

I looked towards the way the shopkeeper pointed too and so did Mikoto and Lefiya to see a headed man or more like a tall teenager holding a box full of the armor I once purchased before.

As all of us stared at the man/teenager he gave us a wide birth before picking up on my features. "White hair, red eyes kinda puny you must be the buyer. Hey, can I interest you in a little armor?" The redhead said as I just held a little gape of my mouth as he smirked.

"Alright," I said and his smirk widened.

"Follow me." He said and I looked over to Lefiya and Mikoto and they nodded silently.

We started to walk until we found a balcony and a bench where we sat down.

"So may I interest you in a deal? How a companion of the Thousand Elf has brightened my armor." I looked away trying not to laugh while Lefiya squinted at all the people who gave Welf a discerning glance before walking away.

"Territory dispute huh," I said turning my head back as I made the guy raise his brow and smirk.

"You pick up fast huh well my name's Welf Crozzo what's yours." He said raising a hand not to shake but as he talked he sometimes moved his arm.

"Bell, Bell Cranel and it's nice to meet you too Welf," I said as I smirked as well and my thoughts were more than happy.

'Fuck yes, maybe I can ask for the swords to be made.'

"We'll Bell how would you like to do business directly?" He asked as I considered and I quickly accepted.

"Awesome but can I ask for one thing in exchange." He added and I just nodded once more.

"I humbly request to join your party." My eyes widen slightly before speaking unnecessarily.

"You sure about that I mean-" I was cut off

"May I ask for a contract as well." I heard Mikoto say as she looked over the armor in the box. Welf froze for a second before smiling and nodding.

"So did you want to head to the dungeon tomorrow too," I asked Mikoto as she smiled and nodded.

"If I and my familia can I would like to have a skilled blacksmith and an adventurer with a lot of potential helping us." I smiled at what she called me as I kept my head down unable to take the smile off my face.

"Sure I wouldn't mind," Welf said with a beaming smile.

"If you don't mind my asking but can you not go adventuring with your familia?" Lefiya asked not out of dislike but out of curiosity which made Welf grovel a bit before replying.

"Me and my Familia don't see eye to eye." I saw Welf start to sweat a bit.

"Also one more question you're a Crozzo right like the disgraced noble clan Crozzo known for their incredible magic swords." I looked at Lefiya and I saw some anger coming from her I got up and tapped her shoulders. She seemed to get knocked back somewhat by the unfocused glance in her eyes.

"Ah I-I'm so sorry Welf I didn't mean to keep pressing you on the matter." Lefiya quickly apologized and bowed her head repeatedly which made Welf's sweat drop once more.

"No it's fine I was going to tell you about it another time," Welf said scratching the back of his head nervously.

"It doesn't matter to me if your family used to make magic swords all I care about is the present I'll care about your past and future later," I said as I looked away slightly abashed while Mikoto added her own two senses.

"I do agree with Bell this craftsmanship is commendable but I do have to ask why do you not make magic swords," Mikoto asked and Welf slightly laughed a bit before calming down.

"Man, you guys are a weird bunch heh heh but what I don't like about magic swords are how they break so easily how much they cost, and the feelings on how adventurers buy them using their livelihood and think they'll become famous with the magic sword only to break immediately. Not only is it bad for the adventure but the blacksmith too. That's why I refuse to make magic swords." Welf said resolutely as I and Mikoto nodded.

"Question is magic swords cash grabs because they cost a lot and they break easily so having someone buy them repeatedly." That made Welf take a double take before trying to answer and Mikoto gave me a smug smile while Lefiya looked with eyes wide open.

"That-urgh…now that I think about it…what the hell," Welf muttered to himself.

"I see it, it's better to have someone buy multiple that break easily than have an unbreakable magic sword that costs a lot," Mikoto added on

"I-I never thought of it like that before." Welf seemed a little lost so I decided to add the last part or so I thought.

"That is true I never heard of anyone better than a Crozzo making a Unbreakable sword maybe they were too preoccupied with making money." Lefiya finished off as I saw Welf hunch down. I thought he was hunched down sneering but instead, it was a burly laugh that erupted showing even tears coming out of his ears as he wiped them away.

"You guys sure are something else…thanks for giving me something to think about heh heh." He said letting out some laughs.

"We'll meet up at noon Welf," I said getting up off the bench and offering a handshake Welf gave a grin and smiled returning it strongly.

"Yeah, I won't disappoint," Welf smirked at me and I smirked right back at him.

"Hmm," Mikoto and Lefiya looked at us weirdly and we both gave them a wide berth.

"Alright, what floor should we try getting to do you think we can get to Mikoto," I smirked at her and she smiled feeling determination fill her.

"The Floor 18 safe zone," Mikoto said as I widened my eyes but smirked.

"Alright, I do hope u know we have to prepare for it." I gave her a wink that she returned.

"May I join you." Lefiya's voice grew as she looked at the both of us.

"I don't see why not." Both Welf and Mikoto said at the same time.

"Didn't you come back from an expedition like not even a couple of hours ago?" I raised my brow at her though she did seem to realize that fact.

"O-oh it's just hearing you talk about it made me feel left out and I want to help and it seemed pretty interesting," Lefiya said with now realization filling her tone.

"Well, Lefiya if you manage to come with us to the dungeon then you could come along," I said to her as she smiled.

"We'll be training at 6 at your place Bell, Mikoto," Lefiya said over excitedly as everyone chuckled.

"Alright Welf, Mikoto, Lefiya we'll meet just outside of Babel, next to the fountain at 12," I said as the three of them looked too me and gave me determined smiles.

"I'll see you guys at the meetup and Bell, The armor's free just a present for your patronage we say," Welf said as he started to walk away.

We stood there the three of us that met today yet we've become friends in such a short time. I couldn't help but think how random it is how in the story they were side characters yet I preferred them to others like the main heroine in this story.

"I still need a weapon guys so I don't know if we should stay together." They looked at me with their heads tilted.

"We need things to prepare you heard and you need rest." I pointed to Lefiya who pouted and Mikoto gave a quick chuckle.

"I guess you're right well then you two I'll see you tomorrow morning," Mikoto said waving before leaving.

I looked over to Lefiya and she looked at me.

"Hey, I'm sorry," I said out of the blue as she looked at me puzzled.

"I know you like Ais and you stood against her because of me." When I said that Lefiya's cheeks turned red and looked away trying to deny it.

"What are you even talking about how could you possibly know…" she backed away going somewhat silent clicking her fingers together.

"Umm it's fine Bell really don't feel bad anyways I felt something off about Miss Ais though something in her eyes made her more agitated too I don't know how to describe it." She said her voice going more silent.

"Restlessness is it," I said as her eyes raised and she nodded.

We found ourselves in silence as I looked towards her and had an idea.

"I think we should go find ourselves a sword," I said and Lefiya smiled having the previous emotion wiped off her face.

"Yeah let's find one I won't be a burden on my familia or Ais or you guys either." She declared as I grabbed the box of armor as we moved going to buy ourselves a couple of swords.

I made it home to the church having the same atmosphere but not the same emptiness it had once been as I walked inside the residence the person I still had trouble imagining was there. My Goddess was back with me.

"Hey Goddess I'm back," I said happier than I thought I would be as I placed the armor on the floor and put the Chokutō I had bought on the dining table.

"Welcome back Bell-Kun," Hestia said rising from the couch she sat on to hug me as I hugged back.

"It's nice to see you again Goddess." I ducked to give her a better grip and some smiled sweetly.

"You too I've missed you too and I'm sorry for overreacting before." I saw her eyes starting to glisten from upcoming tears.

"No it was my fault for saying it like that I could have let you down so much lighter…please forgive this child Goddess." We continued our embrace when I heard Hestia's voice cut in once more.

"Alright…I forgive you Bell-Kun" We hugged for what seemed like hours but was just a couple minutes as I felt a sense of peace and calm that I hadn't before.

'This is what I protect….I want this so much I don't want to let it go.' My grip tightened for half a second before letting go of Hestia.

"Sorry." I bashfully looked away as she looked at me or more importantly my new hairstyle.

"Is that" I just nod knowing what she was going to say yes I was using the ribbon I bought her and I couldn't use anything else cause I couldn't find the hair ties she kept around.

"Well it suits you and I think I can lend you one." She said as she went to the chest that contained the other one and started to pull her hair into a ponytail.

"You look beautiful Goddess," I said with a smile that infected her.

"Hey, Goddess I wanted to say that I was going to go on an expedition to the Middle Floors," I said to Hestia as her features turned to that of shock.

"WHAT!!ALREADY!!" Hestia yelled as I plugged my ears to reduce the volume or at least try and block some of it but it didn't work as well as I hoped.

"But it's your second week only!" Hestia exclaimed as she ran up close to me.

"Well, could you um update my Falna please it hasn't been updated in a week? So that would be cool." I said as Hestia rolled her eyes and threw me on the bed.

"What the heck did you do this week Bell." I heard Hestia mutter as I got up and saw the copy of my Falna on the piece of paper.

"Is there something wrong with me, I can level up!?" I yelled seeing the stats and how fast I grew I gave a misbelieving look to Hestia but she looked just as shocked.

"I can't level you up without your permission so if you want to right now we can," Hestia said as I nodded at her.

"Here Goddess can you hide my Falna," I asked and she thought for a second before nodding as I felt her fingers rubbing on my back.

"All done," Hestia said as she got off of me.

"No let me max out my stats first then I will," I spoke to her now getting off the bed and putting on my shirt.

I grabbed the paper folded it up and went to put it in my pocket before trying to walk off until Hestia stopped me.

"Bell-Kun what are you doing we should burn your Falna page you know that so why are you keeping it." Hestia's voice had an unusual edge to it when she got serious as I looked at her and sighed deciding to tell her the truth.

"I was going to show someone my Falna," I said as Hestia got off the bed before stomping over to me.

"What did you say not!" My Goddess yelled at me and even though she was smaller than me I felt smaller right about now.

"I need too to get better and to better protect you, my Goddess." I had to stand my ground right now.

"I know the people I show it to won't tell anyone so please I'm begging you please." I fell onto my knees in front of Hestia as she flinched back but stood her ground.

"I wouldn't do something as stupid as this if I didn't have faith so please have faith in your child please," I said bowing my head to look at the floor.

"Alright, Bell if that's what you feel as you're Goddess I have to accompany you and keep you out of trouble." I raise my head at that before coming to a stop.

"What you're going!"

"Lefiya Viridis" POV

I gulp as I walk towards the room Lady Riveria resided in I had just gotten back from my shopping trip with Bell and Mikoto who had to leave early to prepare for the expedition that I couldn't help but feel excited for. I was scared of the monsters on the deeper floors and Lady Riveria kept insisting that I needed experience to match my strength and I couldn't help but feel that being with people that are stronger than me all the time during an expedition with my Familia took away from me.

No offense to anyone in my Familia but going on an expedition with people who are well leveled than me will give me more responsibility and with everything going on there was also something else occupying my mind.

Memories, memories of…a past life I couldn't explain it was something I never heard of. I started to experience them but at the time they only boggled my mind until Lady Riveria told me to focus on the magic I had been casting I was able to wave them to the side but after seeing Bell and Mikoto they came back and I had to question what they mean.

I remembered an alleyway, blood lots of blood, and looking down a barrel of some kind of weapon and then walking up like it was a nightmare. I could also tell it was affecting how I acted as well like how pushier I was especially when I questioned Welf-San.

There's something important here I just know all I needed to know was what.

"Lefiya you're back." I heard the voice of the woman I admired passing by in the hallway as I turned to her giving her my full attention.

"Miss Ais how are you." I pushed all my previous thoughts to the back of my mind to talk to her as I saw her express a very small smile.

"I'm doing better and I'm sorry for what I did back at the guild it was very rude of me I should go apologize to that boy…" Miss Ais said looking down and disappointment clearly showed in her eyes.

"Don't beat yourself so much Miss Ais yes you were rude to Bell but please I want you to be happy so I can help you apologize to him so please don't have that look in your eyes. You're strong Miss Ais and I know you'll get stronger so you don't have to worry about that." When I said that Miss Ais's eyes widened but she didn't say a word.

"I know that you've been feeling restless but you really shouldn't feel that way you're already so strong and like I said you'll get stronger so please don't lose yourself in your desire for power…please." I felt tears go down my cheeks as Miss Ais's eyes widened even more and her mouth went agape showing her shock.

"I want to help you so please keep going I'll catch up to you Miss Ais I'll stand right beside you one day and not just me but our whole familia does so please if you were to die then I wouldn't be the only one sad so think of us Miss Ais please." I looked at Miss Ais as tears were now coming from the corners of her eyes.

"I-I-I N-N-Never K-knew." Miss Ais stuttered through all the tears. I took the time to embrace her in a hug as I felt her arms struggling to reach around me but eventually did.

"Thank you Lefiya I appreciate it." Miss Ais smiled at me as my heart started to beat faster than I thought possible.

"Hmm Lefiya you're turning red are you sick." Miss Ais pressed her hand against my forehead as I broke away from her and started to scatter away.

"No! I'm Fine!" I yelled running away I could feel the blush on my face start to burn my skin as I ran into a room to get out of that embarrassing situation.

'Sorry Miss Ais.' I chose to open the door to my right and enter right about now I was staring at Lady Riveria as I had stopped her from finishing the page she was reading as she closed the book and got up.

"Lefiya you're back." Lady Riveria addressed me with a calm and gentle tone that put a calm smile on my face.

"I was a bit worried once you took your time coming back and with a new piece of equipment it seems." Lady Riveria looked at my side to see the blade that Bell had bought me it was a short sword that I had taken a liking to it had a handle that blended in with my outfit but was still a good blade.

I inhaled a breath of fresh air to exhale it once more as I bowed my head down 90 degrees and stated what I wanted to Lady Riveria.

"Lady Riveria may I please accompany friends to an expedition towards the 18th floor," I asked as I clenched my eyes closed hoping for the best.

"But we just returned from an expedition not even a day ago Lefiya you need to rest and even then you have training tomorrow." Lady Riveria struck me hard with her words but it wasn't like anything I didn't know.

"But…" When Lady Riveria didn't stop talking it made me surprised as I thought she was just going to order me to rest.

"I can tell that you value these people and although in all good faith, I shouldn't allow you anywhere near the dungeon until a couple of days of rest. Tell me why you want to go to the dungeon with others, not of our own Familia, and why you feel so strongly about it only then will I permit you though I will forbid you if not Lefiya I know you want to catch up with Ais as I said back at the dungeon before." My eyes went unfocused slightly as I heard the words coming out of her mouth.

'Convince her how am I going to convince Lady Riveria?! She's strong and sticks to what she means…but she's giving me a chance I have to use it.' I breathed in and out through my nose before again doing it to try and relieve all the stress that crept up on me of my nightmares.

"Because!… I need to feel true pain!" I said out loud not knowing what I said I looked up as Lady Riveria had an alarmed face but I looked even more confused.

'Why did I say that?! That's not what I wanted to say! Why is my mouth moving on its own!?' My thoughts directly contrasted with what I said.

"I need to feel the consequences of my actions I could only imagine what would happen to me if I didn't get the magic off. I…I also wanted to…" I quivered slightly as Lady Riveria speed walked over to me using her staff like a cane. She placed a hand on my shoulder and must have seen the unfocused eyes I showed as her own became more wary.

"Lefiya! Calm down, please! Alright, there's no chance I will let you into the dungeon, not in your state you need to rest Lefiya!" Lady Riveria raised her voice but once I heard her say she wouldn't let me go I felt myself become more focused my body and mind were refocused and working together and those memories flowed into me filling me with the knowledge I didn't know before.

My hand with my mind controlling it this time focused itself and grabbed Lady Riveria's hand off of my shoulder.

"I want to be strong Lady Riveria, Why do I go with people with no one from my familia so I can learn I want to learn to not be useless without my magic I remember that battle with that strange new species and I was bailed out by you and I want to get rid of that habit of getting bailed out I know all I need you said it yourself I need experience and I think to help to lead a team as a vanguard and as a supporting mage as well will help me not just catch up but to surpass you and Miss Ais I no longer want to just catch up I want to be strong." I saw Lady Riveria's eyes widen at the declaration and paused to think of my deflation before letting her hand off to rest at her side once more.

"I…give you permission to go to the expedition tomorrow." I heard Lady Riveria say as my eyes widened.

"Thank you so much, Lady Riveria." I had embraced Lady Riveria as she awkwardly patted my head and I felt a bashful smile come from Lady Riveria as I smiled at her causing her to look away slightly.

"It's no problem just make sure you get back before too long monsterphilia is right around the corner and I'm sure you would want to go with Ais." Lady Riveria teased me as I quickly escaped the embrace I looked away feeling my heart start to speed up slightly.

"Am I so obvious," I said pouting with my longer ears sometimes drooping like they were now.

Lady Riveria chuckled before nodding at me which made my pout grow better before thinking about the training I planned with Mikoto and Bell.

"Umm, I have to excuse myself Lady Riveria I have to wake up early tomorrow for training with them so." I tried to take my leave quickly but Lady Riveria did reply faster than I could leave.

"Oh, you're training with them what exactly are you training." Lady Riveria asked with an eyebrow raised until I realized that Lady Riveria looked worried that I might spill things from our familia.

"Oh, just a little guidance on magic and they were going to help me with my swordsmanship," I replied holding the scabbard of the blade that rested on my waist.

"Yet you still have much to learn in magic and spell casting don't you." Lady Riveria asked me as a smile came on her features.

"I'll teach them what I know and they impart their knowledge in wielding a weapon to me." I brought my fist towards my chest.

"I feel as though you're not telling me something important Lefiya." Lady Riveria read me like the book she put down when I came here.

"I asked for an exchange they showed me there Falna's…" I looked away as Lady Riveria's eyes almost seemed to blow out of her face as she held her face with her hand rubbing her temples.

"Oh, my Lefiya I have explained to you how important the sanctity of the Falna people have gone to war over people with special skills and magic you know this right." Lady Riveria informed me as I blanked slightly.

"When are you leaving for your training?" Lady Riveria asked me and I felt more of my sweat coming down my brow.

"At 5:45," I replied looking away as I saw Lady Riveria raise her brow.

"Then I will accompany you." That made my mouth go wide open in shock when she lowered her gaze at me I felt somewhat terrified.

"Lefiya I have a feeling you promised secrecy to these people or from what I can guess that white-haired boy and black-haired girl are the ones you decided with." Lady Riveria hit true once more as she looked at me at my face which said it all.

"No offense Lefiya but you blabber a lot so when you leave I'll be going with you to supervise so you don't do anything more reckless than you have already:" I nodded before leaving the room with nothing but my thoughts and feelings as I walked back to my room.

I walked towards the room that resided for my Goddess Loki as I would ask for my Falna to be updated after I take a bath but today I wanted the opposite and having Lady Riveria question me like that strained me.

I knocked on the door to Loki's room. As a reply was instant from the Goddess of Mischief.

"Hello! Come in!" At Loki's call, I walked inside the room as her eyes which were closed with her normal expression became happy.

"Lefiya! It's nice to see you oh have you grown a bit now." Loki called my name and started to walk closer as she started to examine my chest I pushed her face away feeling my face start to heat up slightly.

"Umm, Loki-Sama I would like to have my Falna updated." Loki rubbed her chin in thought before nodding to my proposal.

I began to strip my top layer off until I had to hold the last layers of clothing to block my Goddes's view of my chest as I heard her grab something from her counter before walking to me.

"Alrighty Lefiya let's see how much you improved," Loki said with a grin before poking herself with the needle she kept and sneaking blood on me in a line as a glow started to shine I felt Loki's hand start to glide on my skin.

"All done and now." I got up from my chair only to see Loki fall on the chair trying to grope me once more.

Normally Loki didn't react all that much due to how much she updated Falna's she did but this was just an insane surprise.

"Wait wah!" Loki yelled as she stared at the page not having reacted to when she saw me quickly move next to her to see my status.

"What the hell how did all your points jump so high," Loki yelled in shock as I looked over my status and gawked in surprise.

'I didn't even do anything that memorable in the expedition but I still improved this much….' I scowl as I look towards the resolutely weak Strength, Endurance, Agility, and Dexterity. I then imagined how Miss Ais would zip around killing everything in sight and then myself just standing there defenseless it made me angry enough to even rip my status sheet as I blank back, in reality, to see Loki checking over me surprised.

"Lefiya is there something wrong cutie." Loki tilted her head to show she wasn't playing around other than calling me cute which I just sighed.

"I think I just need to rest it's going to be a long day tomorrow Goddess." I excused myself before Loki could say anything.

'I need to clean up.'
