Chapter Five and a half: Family Matters
Crash and Misty looked back and forth between Brock and Flint. "You're father and son?" the two trainers asked, flabbergasted.
"Yep." Flint said, taking off his hat and fake beard. "I'm Brock's dad. And former Pewter City Gym Leader."
"Wait, you were Gym Leader? Crash asked. "He was. Until he left."Brock snarled.
Misty stared back at Flint, anger rising. "You did what?"
Flint sighed. "I couldn't stay Gym Leader. Not after what happened."
Crash turned to the Gym Leader. "What happened to Flint to the point he couldn't stay Gym Leader?"
"My wife passed away when Brock was nine years old." Flint said. "Her death shook me to my very core. I didn't have the will to do my duties as a Gym Leader or as a father. So I left out of grief."
Misty placed a hand on her mouth as a tear escaped her eye. Her anger was replaced with empathy. "Goodness, that's terrible." Crash, meanwhile, said nothing, only listening intently.
"And left me to raise my siblings, practically all by myself. I had to put my own dreams and aspirations aside so I could give your Gym and my family my full attention." Brock barked.
Flint sighed. "And I understand. I shouldn't have left you to take over my responsibilities, both as a father and Gym Leader. And I'm willing to make up for it." Flint walked down onto the battlefield to approach his eldest son, bringing him in for a one armed hug.
"W-what?" Brock stammered.
"You'll journey with Crash and Misty, while I take over the Gym and take care of the kids." Flint grinned. "Just tell me what to do and how to do it and you can be off."
Brock looked back at his father, hopeful. "You mean it?" Flint nodded, affirming the young leader's hopes. Brock's eyes lit up, though to Crash and Misty, his normally closed eyes became 4 sided stars. Brock returns the hug, startling his father.
"If you're gonna take care of the kids, you'll need this." Brock said, pulling out of the hug and handing his dad a very thick handbook from his vest, causing the man to put in more effort to carry it.
"What is this? This book weighs- a lot!" Flint grunted, surprised at the tomes' weight.
"Those are my notes for taking care of my brothers and sisters." Brock said candidly. Crash and Misty gasped an audible "What" as they processed what they just heard.
Flint meanwhile, sweat nervously. He quickly shook the feeling off. "No problem! You just get packed while I-" Flint was cut off by his son, who by now put on a backpack.
"Great, tell them all I said I love them!" Brock said, bidding farewell to his father. "And good luck. You'll need it."
"Will do." Flint said, a tear escaping his eye. "Have a great journey!" Flint paused before turning back. "Wait, what was that last part?" But Brock was already far out of earshot with his new traveling companions.
Yeah, i was in a good mood, so this chapter came out sooner. School is out, so I'll post more chapters as a result. Hope you enjoyed the Half-ter (Half chapter) because the journey continues!
Chapter Six: Moonstone Mania
As Crash and friends continue east from Pewter City, they run into a trainer that challenges Crash to a battle. The challenging trainer sends out a male Nidoran, while Crash sends out Jetstream, the Pidgeotto.
After a bit of back and forth, the Nidoran had taken a great amount of damage while Jetstream had taken very little.
"Nidoran, use Horn Attack!" the young trainer shouted in desperation. His Nidoran ran at its opponent, horn pointed forward. Crash just smiled.
"Jetstream, use Gust." Crash commanded. The Flying type beats his wings, creating a strong gale that pushes the Poison pin Pokémon back into a tree, knocking it out. "Alright, Jetstream! Way to go!" The bird Pokémon preens himself, proud of himself.
"Aw man. You're stronger than I thought." The trainer sighed. "Here's your winnings." The trainer hands Crash a handful of coins and walks off. Crash pockets the money and he and his companions continue up the mountain.
/-/
"Mount Moon." Misty sighed in wonder. "That name sounds so romantic." Crash gave her a questioning glance before looking at Brock as the former Gym Leader began talking. "It's said that a meteorite fell and made a crater a long time ago, and that crater became Mount Moon, and the stones that litter Mount Moon are called Moonstones."
"You mean like the evolutionary stone?
That's cool." Crash smiled. "And so romantic." Misty chimed in. Crash rolled his eyes at the comment.
"AHHH! SOMEBODY HELP ME!" A voice wailed. "Who was that? Crash asked? Brock shrugged. "I don't know, but they need help by the sound of it." The three trainers rush in the direction of the panicked voice, finding a scientist being attacked.
"That's a lot of Zubat." Misty remarked. "Let's see," Crash mumbled, pulling out his Pokédex. "Zubat."
Dexter: Zubat are nocturnal and despise sunlight. Because Zubat do not possess eyes, they emit ultrasonic waves to check for obstacles.
"If they hate sunlight, why are the Zubat out of the cave?" Crash asked, brow raised. "It's not even 7 yet."
"I don't know, but we'll ask him afterwards." Misty replied. "So stop thinking and start doing."
"Mark, use Thundershock to knock the Zubat away!" The Pikachu hops from his trainer's shoulder and executes the move, shocking the Bat Pokémon.
One of the Zubat hits the mouth of the cave disorienting it, causing it to flail about mid-air. While its brethren flee back into their home, Crash quickly throws a Pokéball at the disoriented Zubat, with the ball shaking once, twice, and for a final time as he collects his new and checks on the battered scientist.
"That simply was incredible! I am very grateful for you helping me out of such a pickle." The scientist said, squeezing his saviors. Mark reacts the way one would to suddenly being grabbed. Mark lets loose a Thundershock, zapping the scientist and his trainer.
The scientist quickly recovered and stood upright, fixing his glasses like he wasn't struck by an electric type move. "They say a man's best friend is a Pokemon, and you and your Pikachu are the textbook definition of that very saying."
"Uh, thanks?" Crash said, overwhelmed by the praise.
"The bond between you and your Pikachu is what saved me from the Zubat attack, I knew I was saved when I saw you commanding your Pikachu from behind my back. I thought those Zubat would be the end of me, but that Thundershock was enough for them to flee."
The trio and Mark stared at the overly hammy scientist awkwardly, not sure how to respond.
"Hey that's nice and all." Misty interrupted. "But can you tell us who you are, why were those Zubat attacking you, and what are you doing at Mount Moon?"
The scientist quickly dusts himself off. "Ah, that's right. My name is Seymour! Seymour the scientist. Knowledge! Research! That's what makes me, Seymour the scientist!"
"This guy can really ham it up, huh?" said an embarrassed Misty. Brock and Crash nod simultaneously.
"To answer your second question, follow me."
Seymour guides the trio into the cave which was the same amount of brightness as it was outside.
"Some people put up these lights, which have been disturbing the Pokémon that live here, especially the Zubat." Seymour explained.
"That's right!" Crash's eyes widened in realization. "What? What is it?" Misty asked? "I forgot to name my new Zubat."
"Is that it?" Misty asked, irritated.
"Yeah?" Crash replied, acknowledging the anger in Misty's voice. "Uhhh." Misty glares at him. "But, it can wait?" Misty nodded.
Brock decides to put the conversation back on track and asks Seymour why did the people do this.
"The Moonstone." Seymour replied. Crash tilts his head in confusion. "The Moonstone?"
Seymour nodded. "The meteorite that fell here so many years ago, has had people asking "What secrets did this rock hold" we simply had to know. Our research shows the Moonstone holds a special power, and that other Pokémon can utilize it to make their strength flower. But there are others who would use the Moonstone to cause peril, which I have no doubt the reason why the lights are up, and why the Pokémon have become feral."
"So, bad people want the Moonstone's power?" Crash summarized.
"Yes, and I cannot allow that to happen." said a resolute Seymour.
"You really seem to be interested in the Moonstone Seymour. Why is that?" Brock questioned.
"Since I was a boy, I believed that Pokémon came to our world from outer space."
"From outer space?" The trio asked in unison?
Seymour nodded. "I've always had the theory that Pokémon came from beyond the stars. And the spacecraft they used to get here? Why that's the Moonstone they rode to get here, from their home so far."
"That certainly a creative theory to say the least." Misty commented.
"The Moonstone belongs to the Pokémon, so I cannot allow thieves to take it, and use the Moonstone's power as they see fit." Seymour gripped Crash's shoulders. "Will you help me?"
Before Crash could answer, a small pink Pokémon hopped past, carrying a small rock.
"A Clefairy!" Seymour gasped in excitement. "Aw, it's so cute!" Misty gushed. Crash raised a brow as he pulled out his Pokédex.
Dexter: On every night of a full moon, groups of this Pokémon come out to play. It is rare and found only in certain areas.
"That Clefairy was holding something." Crash pointed out.
"That was most likely a Moonstone." Seymour surmised. "If we follow Clefairy, we could possibly find, and protect the Moonstone from those intruders."
"Yeah, so let's follow it!" Misty said, somewhat too excited.
/-/
The trainers and scientist follow the Clefairy, which was being attacked by Meowth.
"Meowth! I should've known." Crash shouted. The Scratch Cat Pokémon looks at the boy surprised.
"Wait, the twerp? What're you doing here?"
"Wait the Meowth talks?" Seymour gasped. "Yeah. This Meowth in particular works for Team Rocket, a band of people who steal Pokémon." Misty replied.
"Team Rocket are Pokémon gangsters, get it right twerpette." Meowth corrected.
"T-twerpette?!" Misty gasped, offended.
"That's right!" A familiar voice said. "Now prepare for trouble!"
"And make it double." Another said.
"To protect the world from devastation," the female voice said.
"To unite all peoples within our nation." The male voice added.
"To denounce the evils of truth and love." the female voice continued.
"To extend our reach to the stars above." The male voice finished.
"Jessie." The woman said. "James." her partner in crime continued.
"Team Rocket! Blast off at the speed of light!" Jessie posed.
"Surrender now or prepare to fight!" James posed as well.
"Meowth! DATS RIGHT!" Meowth jumped in.
"It's you guys again!" Crash groaned.
"Don't you realize that you three are causing trouble for all the Pokémon here?" Brock asked.
"Oh no, we're so sorry." said a sarcastic Jessie.
"How will we ever forgive ourselves for such deplorable decisions?" Continued an equally sarcastic James.
"We're gonna grab ourselves a Moonstone so we power up our Pokémon," said Meowth. "And once our Pokémon get a power boost, we'll beat you, and take that Pikachu." said an evil smiling Jessie.
"Well we won't let that happen!" Crash said defiantly. "If you want a rock,' Brock said, reaching for a ball. "Then I've got one for you! Geodude, go!"
"If the brat wants to fight," Jessie said, sending out her Ekans. "Then it's a fight that he'll get." James added, sending out his Koffing.
"Two versus one? Why don't I even the odds?" Crash remarked. "Wormwood, go!"
The trainers all send out their Pokémon and begin to do battle.
"Misty, take Seymour and Clefairy outta here, Mark will go with you." Crash whispered. Misty wordlessly nodded. "Koffing, Smog attack!" Koffing charges forward, spewing out poison gas.
"Wormwood, blow it back with Gust!" The strong gust of wind completely dissipates the cloud of toxins, temporarily clouding Team Rocket's vision. Misty uses the distraction to escort Seymour and Clefairy out the cave room along with Mark tagging along, but Meowth does the same sneakily following the redhead.
The battle continues and Jessie and James are soon on the back foot. Geodude resisting the Poison type moves and Wormwood having a Psychic type move are enough to give Crash and Brock the edge.
"Wormwood, use Confusion!" The Butterfly Pokémon's eyes glow blue as he fires a strange beam of energy from them. The beam makes contact, disorienting the Rocket Pokémon, causing them to attack one another.
"Nice one Crash, their Pokémon are confused." Brock complimented. "Now Geodude, use Mega Punch and knock them away!" The Rock type winds up a punch, as the Rockets yell at their Pokémon to attack their opponents and not their allies. Geodude slugs the Poison type duo with the power-packed punch, knocking them back into their trainers, causing them to fall into a nearby hole.
"You may have won this round," James complained. "But we will be back! Just you wait!" Jessie finished.
"Alright! We did it!" said a victorious Crash. "We sure did!" Brock replied as the two fist bumped.
"Wait, we're forgetting something…" Crash paused. "Forgetting something?" Brock asked, a bit confused. "Yeah we beat those two but- OH!" Crash gasped.
"What? What's wrong?" asked a worried Brock. "WE FORGOT ABOUT MEOWTH!" panicked Crash.
/-/
Misty and Seymour follow Clefairy as it hops out of a hole that leads to the outside of Mount Moon.
"Clefairy, come back!" Misty called out. "We have to stay together!" Cried a worried Seymour. Clefairy continued hopping away up an arch formation, until Meowth blocked its path.
"Dere's no escape from Meowth, Clefairy!" Chuckled the Scratch Cat Pokémon. "Now hand ova dat Moonstone, and make it snappy!" Meowth began to slowly approach the cornered Clefairy. Clefairy opted to jump off, crashing into Misty on the way down, causing Misty, Seymour and Clefairy to fall into a small stream.
Meowth hopped down to intercept the Fairy Pokémon. "Now hand ova dat Moonstone and no one gets hurt." Meowth demanded, brandishing his claws. Seymour began to wave his hands frantically. "Now now, Meowth. Can't we be reasonable?"
"No we cannot." Meowth replied as he attempted to pounce on Clefairy. As Misty pulled out a Pokéball, ready to protect Clefairy, only for Mark to bounce off Meowth's head, plunging the Scratch Cat Pokémon into the water below.
Mark perched on Misty's shoulder, giving a victorious smile. Misty nodded and petted the electric mouse. "Thanks Mark, now let me finish this." Misty smiled and threw a Pokéball, with a Staryu emerging from inside.
"Staryu, use a Water Gun!" Misty commanded. As Meowth begins to recover from being knocked into the water so suddenly, a blast of water sends the Scratch Cat off into the horizon. "See you later Meowth. Have a nice drip!" Misty calls out to Meowth as he's sent flying
"Hey, is everyone OK?" Crash asked, making it to his friends. Misty gave a haughty chuckle. "We won't be seeing Meowth for awhile," Misty paused for dramatic effect. "Thanks to "Misty the Mighty"."
/-/
As it became sunset, Crash and friends sat down by the river to rest. Brock pulls out a small can and opens it, handing its contents, small brown pellets, to his Geodude, which ate the pellets happily.
"Is that Pokémon food?" Crash asked, pointing at the container. Brock nodded. "It's my own special blend." Brock hands Crash a container full of Pokémon food. "Why don't you give some to your Pokémon?"
"Ok, thanks Brock!" Crash nodded, releasing his Pokémon so they could enjoy the food. As they begin to dig in and enjoy the custom made food, Crash then realizes something he'd forgotten. "Now I get to name my new Zubat."
As Misty rolled her eyes, Seymour gave Crash a curious look. "You nickname your Pokémon?"
Crash shot the scientist with a smile. "Yeah. I call my Pikachu, Markus Voltsy, or just Mark for short." The electric mouse gives an affirmative "Pika" as a response.
"My Butterfree, Wormwood. And my Pidgeotto, Jetstream."
"That's incredible. Not many people who own Pokémon nickname them. And for trainers, that number is even lower!"
"Really?" Crash asked, looking offended. "I think nicknames give more personality to a Pokémon. Like Mark isn't just any Pikachu. He's my Pikachu. My partner. My friend."
"How touching!" Seymour grasped the young boy's hands. "The bond you and your Pokémon share, it makes sense to me that you'll do things no other trainers would dare!"
"Uhhhh, thanks Seymour." Crash said pulling away. "Hey Zubat!" Crash called out to his latest capture.
"I don't think I introduced myself," Crash said. "I'm Crash. I'll be your trainer from this day forward." The Bat Pokémon happily screeches to reply. Crash points to the Pikachu perched on his shoulder. "And this is Markus Voltsy. Or just Mark, the Pikachu!" Mark greets the Poison and Flying type, which the Bat Pokémon happily replies back.
"Those two are Wormwood and Jetstream." said Crash, pointing at his Butterfree and Pidgeotto. Jetstream acknowledges the Bat Pokémon while Butterfree happily greets his new friend.
"Those two are Brock and Misty." Crash pointed at the redhead and at the former Gym Leader. Zubat gave a greeting screech as the other two trainers returned his greeting.
"And I'm Seymour the scientist!" The scientist says candidly. Zubat turns to Seymour. The trio, Mark, and Seymour stare at Zubat in anticipation, only for the Bat Pokémon to happily greet Seymour, leaving the three trainers, scientist and Pokémon, in utter shock.
"Guess there's no hard feelings huh?" Crash scratched his head, somewhat embarrassed. Misty sighs, shaking her head. "Welp. On to nicknames… hmmm since the Pokédex says that you use sound to move in caves, and the sound comes back to you like an echo."
Crash slammed his fist into his hand vertically. "I'll name you echo with a K. Ekho! Do you like the name?"
The Zubat eagerly nods at its new name. "Well Ekho, welcome to the team!" Crash smiled.
As Crash's other Pokémon continued eating Brock's Pokémon food, Clefairy rubs against Mark. Mark turns to the Fairy Pokémon, wondering what it wants.
(Translation start)
Mark: Hey, did you need something?
Clefairy: Yes, it's something very important.
Mark: Something important? Like what?
Clefairy: Our ritual.
Mark: Ritual?
Clefairy: Yes. The glorious stone, the one your human call "the Moonstone", was given to us by The Shining One.
Mark: The Shining One?
Clefairy: Yes. In our darkest hour a large boulder struck this place. It held a great power. A power we've used to save ourselves. Since then, when The Shining One appears, we pray and dance to The Shining One to thank them for their help.
Mark: This ritual means alot to you then.
Clefairy: It does. So it's important that all Clefairy are present for the ritual to express their thanks, otherwise it would seem disrespectful. And it seems The Shining One is almost here! I have to hurry! But I cannot risk another attack.
Mark: Hey, why don't me and my friends help with protecting you?
Clefairy: You would do such a thing?
Mark: Yeah! We've already been protecting you, so why stop now? We have to trek through the cave anyway.
Clefairy: Thank-you so much! I am really grateful for your assistance! But we must hurry. Follow me!
Mark: Right behind you!
(Translation end)
"Hey, Mark, where are you going?" Crash called out to his starter, as he ran after Clefairy.
Everyone immediately put away their things to follow Mark and Clefairy. Sunset turned to night as they followed the small Pokémon into a cave.
"Hey look at the size of that rock!" Crash pointed at the large boulder, gleaming in the moonlight.
Seymour gasped. "The Moonstone!"
"So it is real." Brock remarked.
"It's like something out of a dream." Misty sighed in awe.
Clefairy hopped up to the pedestal that the boulder was resting on, placing the Moonstone it had on a free space around it.
As the light of a full moon shone on the rock, causing it to glow, multiple Clefairy stepped out from the shadows of the cave. They began to circle the glowing boulder and dance about, chanting their name.
"What're they doing?" Crash asked. Mark jumped up to get his trainer's attention. "Oh, Mark!. Do you know?" The Pallet Town trainer asked. Mark nodded and began to dance, trying to imitate the rest of the Clefairy. "Uh-huh, I see."
"You understand that?" Seymour asked. Crash gave a confident smirk. "Of course I do. The Clefairy gather the Moonstone and do the Macarena." Mark faceplanted at this.
"I don't think that's the answer." Seymour summarized. "Guess not." Crash sighed, embarrassed. Mark began the game of charades again.
/-/
"So they gather the Moonstone to… what?" Misty raised a brow. "I'm just as confused as you are Misty." Crash replied.
Mark made the signs again, before bowing towards the large rock. Brock slammed his fist into his hand vertically. "Praying! They pray to the Moonstone." Mark quickly nods, finally happy to stop the game of charades.
"You got that?" Misty asked. "Charades is a family favorite." Brock said, scratching his head in embarrassment.
"So I was right! Pokémon do have a connection to the cosmos." Seymour shouted with joy. "The Clefairy and the human race will take a journey into space. First our moon, then Mars, the further beyond the stars!"
"Dats our job buddy!" Cried Meowth from the entrance.
Crash and Misty groaned in displeasure. "You guys just don't quit, do you?" Crash asked rhetorically.
Seymour stepped in between Team Rocket and the stone. "Listen, stay away from the Moonstone, or else."
"You hear that James?" Jessie asked.
"I think I do." He answered.
"He's shaking in his boots!" Meowth chuckled. "And we can actually hear it!" The terrible trio began to laugh.
"I'll show you three." Seymour began to charge at them, swinging his arms. Meowth stuck his foot out, causing the scientist to fall on his face and lose his glasses.
As the Team Rocket trio laugh at the scientist's misfortune, Crash sends out his Butterfree to do battle, as does Brock with his Onix. The Rockets respond in kind by bringing out their own Pokémon.
James orders his Koffing to set up a Smokescreen and Jessie tells Ekans to dig a hole. Wormwood clears the Smokescreen on his trainer's command but when the smoke is cleared, it's revealed that Team Rocket escaped with the Moonstone.
"They tricked us!" Crash grumbled.
"They couldn't have gotten far." Brock reassured his friend. "Onix, go into that tunnel and follow them." The Rock snake nods and burrows in the spot that Ekans did.
As Crash and friends chased after the retreating Rockets, Seymour continued to fumble about on the ground, trying to find his glasses.
One of the Clefairy hands Seymour his glasses, which the scientist is happy to take.
"Ah, thank you." Seymour said gratefully. "But aren't you going to stop them?"
The Clefairy all stared at Seymour, confused. "The Moonstone means alot to you right? You can't just let them steal it. They use that stone to hurt more innocent Pokémon." Seymour said.
The Clefairy look at one another and unanimously nod in agreement. They immediately begin to hop down the hole that Onix had gone into as Seymour followed suit.
/-/
Meanwhile, Jessie, James, and Meowth ride down the mountain with the Moonstone in tow.
"Hahaha! Looks like nice guys-" Jessie said as James finished her sentence. "Finish last."
"We went from worst to first." Meowth jokes. Their escape came to an end when Onix surfaced in front of them, causing them to crash.
"Onix, trap them with Bind." Brock commanded from behind Team Rocket. "Koffing, stop Onix with a Tackle." James ordered. Onix stops the Poison gas Pokémon by wrapping it up, but Koffing spews out a noxious gas upon being squeezed that hits Onix in the face, badly poisoning it. This causes Onix to throw the Poison Gas Pokémon to the ground as a reflex, and Onix falls to the ground severely weakened from the poisonous gas.
Brock retrieves his fainted Rock type, thanking it for its efforts.
"Hey look," Crash said, pointing at the hole that Onix had made. "It's Seymour." Misty finished.
As Seymour peeked out of the hole, multiple Clefairy began to exit and surround Team Rocket, unnerving the troublesome trio. The society of Clefairy began to wag their fingers rhythmically in unison.
Team Rocket, somewhat hypnotized, rocked side to side along with the fingers of the Clefairy.
Crash and friends did the same, rocking side to side on the same beat as the Clefairy.
"What're they doing?" Jessie asked. "I don't know, but watching their fingers wag like that, I wanna do the same." Meowth replied. "Us too!" Jessie and James said simultaneously.
"This is making me dizzy." Misty sighed. Crash pulled out his Pokédex, wondering what the Clefairy were doing.
Dexter: Metronome: The user waggles its finger, triggering a move. There is no telling what will happen.
"So this is the move that Clefairy are notorious for, the Metronome." Seymour said, rocking his body to the beat the Clefairy were wagging their fingers to.
Once the Clefairy stopped wagging their fingers, everyone else stopped rocking side to side. The Clefairy began to glow and simultaneously, all exploded, sending Team Rocket into the horizon, becoming a small twinkle in the distance.
"What was that?" Crash asked? Brock gasped "They used Explosion!" Crash shared his male companions' shock. "They did?"
"Guys, the Moonstone!" Misty cried. "It's destroyed." Crash and Brock looked at the place they saw the large boulder before, and like Misty said, it was destroyed.
The explosion had broken the Moonstone into several pieces. Some landed on the Clefairy, causing them to glow in an evolutionary light.
"They evolved into Clefable!" Seymour said. "Evolved into Clefable?" Crash asked, pulling out his Pokédex.
Dexter: Clefable, the Fairy Pokémon, and evolved form of Clefairy. A Pokémon that is rarely seen. Some scientists believe that it gazes intently at the sky on nights with a full moon because it's homesick.
"So this is the power of the Moonstone." Crash sighed in awe.
The Clefable, with the help of their new human friends, carried the shards of the Moonstone back to their home, as they continued to dance to pay reverence to "The Shining One".
"I have decided to stay here with the Clefairy and Clefable." Seymour said.
"Really?" Crash asked. Seymour nodded. "It's been my dream to find the Moonstone. And now that I have, I can start my next dream; going to space with them!"
"Well when you get there Seymour, make sure you send us a postcard." Brock quips.
A Clefairy approaches the trio, handing them each a Moonstone.
"Are these for us?" Misty asked. The Clefairy nodded. "Awesome, thanks." Crash smiled. The Clefairy bowed and rejoined its friends.
