It was mid-afternoon when Happy felt his pocket vibrate. He was in the middle of his second pool game with Chibs. Pulling phone out he saw it was a text from Helena. 1417 Chestnut hurry. The anger spread violently through Happy in a moment. Throwing his pool stick down he turned, hustling out of the clubhouse to Chibs's protesting questions.
He took a sharp turn into the cul-de-sac Helena' house was in. The moving truck was still in the driveway, one of the movers smoking against the opened back. Ignoring him, Happy stormed into the house, reaching for his SK-5.
The house was mostly quiet- he could hear a tv playing somewhere. Boxes were everywhere, the furniture was mostly in place on the first floor. He peered down in the basement but it was dark. To his left was a short hallway that lead into the open living room, another hall off the left wall. In front was the kitchen, but he couldn't see anyone. Where was Helena? Noella and Henry?
"HELENA!" He shouted, moving into the living room. He heard a door open, turning he saw a blonde blur before it crashed into him causing him to stumble back.
"What the fuck happened?" He asked trying to get her to look at him. "Where are the kids?"
"In..in my bedroom…tv…"Helena cried into his chest. He noticed she wasn't wearing her glasses.
"Baby what happened?" He asked again doing his best not to start yelling, the woman in his arms didn't need that.
"He tried to….he tried…" Helena started shaking. "He tried to…grab my….kiss…wall…"
Rage surged through Happy. He gripped Helena tight, kissing the top of her head. He was killing someone tonight. The rage he felt wasn't just the general rage of violence against women. It was deeper than that, protective and possessive. It was something he hadn't felt for any woman before.
"Shh…I got you, let me look at you. Are Noella and Henry ok?" He asked finally getting her to look at him.
A bruise was forming on her cheek and her lip was split. He could see a tear in her shirt at the shoulder and she was still trembling. A small cut on her nose told him why she wasn't wearing her glasses, and she quickly glanced away from him.
"Yeah, they're watching a movie…I don't think…" Helena turned back into him.
"The fucker still here?" Happy thought of the man outside. Helena shook her head.
"Who's outside?"
Helena pulled back at that. "There was three of them…I guess he is new guy? I don't know…can we go to the kids?"
Happy nodded, keeping his arm around her. When they got to the door, he stopped her before opening it. Wiping her face gently, he tucked her hair behind her ears. Then he gently rolled her sleeves to hide the tear. There wasn't anything he could do about the bruise but she managed a smile and deep breath.
Opening the door, they found the kids asleep on the bed. Noella was curled up at the bottom and Henry was imitating a star fish. The blankets were half off, revealing that the sheets had yet to be put on. Relief released some of the tension Happy had of having to explain this to the 5 year olds. Helena kissed each kid, turned off the tv and motioned him out.
Leading him to the hall, she looked to him for the next step. Happy was curious as to why the other mover hadn't come back in yet. He knew he hadn't heard the truck move. What the hell was going on?
"Stay here," he said pointing to the couch. Helena nodded sinking into the corner of the couch where she could see both the front door and the hallway to the bedroom.
Happy walked back outside, seeing the mover was now leaning against the driver side door. He frowned, stalking forward. The man shrank back a bit as Happy got in his face.
"Explain to me what the fuck happened in my house!" His whisper was a hiss as his eyes cut the man in front of him.
"I don't know! I swear! I was just brining in the last of the stuff…and I heard some…shit happening. Jimmy told me to ignore it…happens sometimes with single moms…then Jimmy and Billy just left. Went down the street I think," the man stammered through. Happy gritted his teeth shoving the man against the door by his throat.
"Full names asshole and I won't beat you down in my driveway!" Happy ignored his claim on the property in his pursuit of a fast interrogation.
"O'Connell, they told me to wait for Ms. Beaumont to come out and sign some receipts."
"Give them to me," Happy gritted releasing the man. He quickly pulled a clipboard out of the cab handing them over.
Happy took note of the moving company name and phone number. Signing Helena's name he handed it back.
"Get the fuck out of here."
The man wasted no time in doing that. Happy pulled out his cell. Dialing the number he paced the driveway.
"Quality Movers, how may I help you?" The chipper voice irritated Happy.
"I need your manager, have a serious complaint to lodge," he said, scowling as Helena stepped outside. She came to his side with a questioning look.
"Yes sir, it'll be a moment to direct you. Our manager's name is Ted."
Happy tucked Helena under his arm, thinking on how exactly he was going to get to the O'Connell brothers.
"This is Ted, how may I help you?"
"Ted, who the hell do you employ?" Happy kept his voice to a snarl.
"I'm sorry sir…" Ted started.
"Sorry isn't good enough! Two of your movers fucking assaulted my girlfriend, with my kids down the hall! And it doesn't sound like it's the first time these assholes have done it!" Happy snapped, he squeezed Helena tighter as she flinched.
"Is your family ok? I had no idea! I apologize!" Ted sounded sincere at least.
"Lucky for you, they are. She gets a full refund, and I get the address to the O'Connell brothers."
"I can give the refund, but not the address, it's against policy," Ted placated.
"I don't give a shit about your policy. I can always file a police report, or make a personal visit," Happy's voice was dropped to a deadly snarl. He wasn't nicknamed "killer" for nothing.
"Ok, ok. Give me a moment. What is the name of your girlfriend?" Ted sighed.
"Beaumont, moved to Charming," Happy said dropping a kiss to Helena's head she relaxed a bit.
He noticed the front door opening again and Noella skipping out. Helena turned extending her hands for the skipping girl. The child gave a pout to seeing her mother's face, making Helena kneel and whisper something in her ear.
"Sir, the address is 2145 Grant Rd. Anything else?"
"No, get your shit employees in line," Happy ended the call turning to the girls. Whatever Helena had told Noella had mollified the little girl who was doing some kind of dance on the lawn.
"What happens now?" Helena asked.
Happy sighed. He knew what he was going to do, but was unsure how to tell the woman he had only known for hours. What was between them was real, he knew that in his gut. But it was all moving at light-speed.
"I take care of it. You'll be getting a refund," Happy said. Helena nodded.
"Will you come back tonight?" The question made Happy grin.
"Yeah, when I go lock the door. Keep yourselves and the kids inside. Noella, is your brother still sleeping?" Happy called out.
"No, he's looking for his cars," Noella said making Helena groan.
"Ce garçon est trop impatient, il va me donner des cheveux gris," Helena huffed.
"Venid aquí mis princesas," Happy waved. Both girls came to him, Happy lifting Noella into his arms.
"I'll be back in a few hours, be good," he said giving Noella a forehead kiss making her giggle. He then did the same to Helena.
"Ok, be safe. Come mon petit," Helena said as Happy placed Noella down.
He watched them go into the house before getting back on his bike. Before he handled the O'Connell brothers, he needed more information. That meant he needed Juice at least. Going solo on this wasn't smart either. At least one brother needed to be with him. But this wasn't club business, so he would have to frame it carefully. Revving his engine, he pulled out heading back to the clubhouse.
