Season 3 Episode 10

In class, the atmosphere seems normal with students interacting with one another. For instance, Kayano, Kokoro, Chiaki and Mori are seen chatting with one another, Yukimura and Akito are making plans related to the Ayanokouji Clique since they're members of it, Sotomura and Hondou are planning something after school, Miyamoto, Okitani and Ijuin are discussing something and Satou is seen interacting with Sakura as they talked about fashion with Haruka listening to their conversation.

However, only one student is seen isolating himself out of unhappiness and depression. Yes, Hirata Yousuke and this once popular guy has descended into someone who's too useless to care about anything.

To protect my precious friends, I have to protect the class. If I do that, I can protect my friends. But...that is not the real me. I made a mistake in that incident in junior high. So I shouldn't repeat the same mistake in this class! And I came up with one answer...but still...I made the same mistake again and it was way worse than before in junior high...

Yousuke then twitched and trembled in regret but soon calmed down and remained in his depressing state.

Later on...

Outside the classroom, "Sorry to keep you waiting Yukimura-kun. What is it that you want to talk about?"

"Um...firstly, what's Kiyotaka doing here Horikita?"

"If it's about the special exam, I thought it might be a good idea to have him here. He's the Commander after all." She explained as Yukimura just purchased a drink.

"Wakata. I'll explain right away. I've come up with a way to get information from Class A." Yukimura began.

"Oh my gosh, are we going to tail the Class A students?" She asked feeling like it's not gonna work.

"No." That left her surprised. "We're going to get info from Katsuragi and make him our ally." Yukimura revealed. "By now, he might be holding a grudge against Sakayanagi for expelling his only staunch friend and follower, Totsuka. Since then, he's been isolated and lost his place in class for Sakayanagi now solely is the leader."

"Yes he certainly had a conflict with Sakayanagi. But do you think he would betray his class just to frustrate her and screw up her plans?" Horikita asked as Ayanokouji went to buy a drink which he did already.

"Of course, we're probably need a good bargaining chip." said Yukimura as he sipped his bottle of iced lemon tea.

"Do you think we can provide that?" She asked.

"If we move up to Class A, we'll offer Katsuragi the right to move into our class."

"You know well that it requires 20 million private points to the class transfer." Horikita brought up.

"It's not impossible if the whole class saves up for it."

"There's no way an ordinary student would take on such a deal. We're still in Class C, you know?"

"If his classmates find out he betrayed them, he'll be expelled next." Ayanokouji warned Yukimura as he opened his bottle of iced lemon tea and drank some of it. After that, "We really don't have a lot of time to accumulate the 20 million points."

"I'm not against the idea of information warfare. But that strategy is simply not good." Horikita stated.

"If we don't move, we're not gonna gain anything!"

"I find it difficult to imagine we'll get any information even if we do make a move. If you come up with another idea, come talk to me again." Horikita then went back to class as the boys watched her.

"Kiyotaka. Can you help me out? I've already arranged a meeting with Katsuragi after school so that we can talk about my plan." Yukimura requested. Ayanokouji just stared at him.

After school...

They met up with Katsuragi behind the school as the plan went underway, "So what exactly would I be getting in return for doing this?" He asked the 2 boys.

"We'll welcome you into our class. After we work our way to Class A, we'll give you the right to move-"

"No need." Katsuragi interrupted Yukimura. "You guys won't have a lot of time to acquire the points and provide them after all." He was a bit frustrated as, "Moreover, I've already started working with her."

"What? But I thought I heard that-"

"You must have heard only half the story between us during the Class Poll." Katsuragi stated. "Nevertheless, I don't mind telling you our 5 official events that Sakayanagi has not shared with anyone so that your efforts won't be wasted since you arranged for this."

"Really? Then what do you want in return?" Yukimura asked.

"Nothing. I only said this so that you guys won't leave empty-handed." Katsuragi answered as he tipped them the info. "Chess, English, Math are the official events. Contemporary Literature and Flash Mental Arithmetic are most likely. The rest would be fake outs."

"Nice! We got a chance to win this Kiyotaka!"

"Impossible. Don't think you can beat them with half-hearted cooperation. It won't be enough and already, I'm committed to helping my class win this." Katsuragi warned them.

"Will you even be allowed to participate, with Sakayanagi being so wary of you right now?" Ayanokouji asked.

"That depends on the mutual trust between us. But in case I'm not nominated, then you're gonna have to do this with your own efforts and with luck on your side if you have any." Katsuragi then prepared to leave when, "Katsuragi, may I speak with you about something later on?"

"Hmmm...we'll meet at the boulevard Ayanokouji." He then left the area as, "Kiyotaka! We're able to get some info despite Katsuragi declining our offer. Let's go tell Horikita about it right away!"

"No Keisei. She'll be indignant for us taking action on our own. Leave that to me so that I'll find the right time to tell her."

"Wakata. Also, what do you want to speak with Katsuragi about?"

"Something related to the Class Poll."

Later on, both of them are seen seated on a park bench and eating a corndog. "Firstly...thanks for the treat Ayanokouji."

"You're welcome Katsuragi." He replied as he took a bite. After chewing the portion. "I heard Totsuka made some moves. At the cost of his existence here."

"Sakayanagi told you, did she?" He asked.

"Yes. How are you feeling now?"

"Alone. Everyone in Class A now follows Sakayanagi while I'm left to gather dust." He answered as he took a bite off his corndog. Ayanokouji looked up at the sky for a few seconds. "You know, you and Sakayanagi have what it takes to lead the class. The problem is, both of you aren't balanced."

"Excuse me?" A surprised Katsuragi asked.

"Back then, Kanzaki gave me informaton about your ongoing clashes. The way I see, it's like a shield vs a sword, a cannon vs a fortress and a tank vs a stronghold."

"What's the implication then?" He asked him.

"In your case, you have good leadership but being on the defensive stance will not help you achieve anything." Ayanokouji revealed. "If you remain on this stance without moving forward, it'll be worth nothing even if your defenses are strong."

"Why is that?" He asked.

"No matter how hard you defend from any attack, they'll come back stronger Katsuragi." Ayanokouji answered. "On the other hand, Sakayanagi is always on the offensive and being able to make the right calculations. I can only say that leadership is more qualified."

"So why are you telling me all this?" Katsuragi asked as he finished his corndog.

"Because I want to help you and make you understand." He answered him. "With humility, you can take a page or two from Sakayanagi's leadership skills and improve on yourself. That way, you can prove to your class your worth and earn the trust from Sakayanagi. Didn't Totsuka tell you before to work with her and learn from her?"

Katusragi said nothing as he reflected on himself. "Re-establishing the class unity is now in your hands. I know for sure you can do it." Ayanokouji encouraged him. "Also, if you need to talk to someone, you can look for me. As a friend."

He was amazed by his encouragement as Ayanokouji finished his corndog and took his leave. "He is truly something..." Katsuragi thought as he remained seated and pondered about their discussion.

Night time...

"What should I get? The Steak Frites? The Roast Beef set? Or-" That's when Ayanokouji received a text message from Horikita. "Unbelievable...I have a bad feeling about this..."

It now cuts to her dorm room as, "Is that dinner?"

"Of course. Come, I want to discuss something with you over dinner. Don't worry, it's not like before during our first time eating together." Horikita assured to him and he did remember the what transpired on May.

Doubtful at first but seeing the food prepared, he sat down and they had dinner together. "Barley Miso? Didn't know you're good at cooking."

"This is my first meal I've cooked so far. I recently started learning the basics and trying it out on simple dishes like these." Horikita explained as Ayanokouji ate some more. "Mmmm...this is something."

"When it comes to cooking, it's nothing to be proud of. Nevertheless, I can see that you're enjoying it and I'm glad that it's tasty to your taste buds." She stated.

"Yeah. Thank you for the dinner. Now shall we get to it?"

"Straight to business? This is something different from you Ayanokouji-kun." Horikita then showed him some detailed info on a tablet. "I've come up with a plan that I think is best for Class C on this exam. I'd like to hear your opinion about it."

Placing the bowl and chopsticks on the table, Ayanokouji took the tablet and analyzed the plan. "Hmmm...this data almost feels like it lays our entire class base."

"I've been struggling with this data for the past week, and this is the answer I've come up with." She replied.

"I have no objection to anything in your data. However, can I add just one thing?" He asked.

"What is it?" Horikita asked as he put the tablet aside and continued eating. "I'd like you to be the one to play the chess event that Class A has chosen."

"Watashi? It's true that someone had to practice it before the event, but why me?" She asked.

"Because I think you're the right person to teach." Ayanokouji answered as he took some vegetables and ate them.

"Wakata. But how are we going to practice the chess game?" She asked.

"We're going to have to practice it online in the middle of the night." He answered her.

"And that way, no one can spy on our gameplay." Horikita exclaimed as she poured some green tea on a cup for him. "Do you think this will help us beat Class A?"

"I don't think they're an unbeatable opponent at all. That's what I thought when I browsed through your data." He then ate a piece of meat. "I'll leave it to you from now on." He told her while chewing it.

And by the time they discussed the special exam, Ayanokouji finished his dinner. It was pretty good in flavour and taste.

The next day after school...

As always, Yousuke wanted to leave the class and not care about anything.

"Chotto matte Hirata-kun. Let me just confirm one thing." Horikita called for him as he stopped. "There are no plans to have you in play on the day of the exam. Even so, when it comes to an event that requires a large number of people, will you at least join us?"

Yousuke said nothing but glared to himself and walked away as Mii-chan made her move. "Horikita-san! Let me help get the answer for you!"

"Wait it's not necessary!" She called out but she ran off already as, "It seems we can't win this exam with Hirata becoming a recluse." Satou spoke to Shinohara. "And we don't have much time left until it arrives." She replied back as Ayanokouj said nothing what he witnessed.

Down there, Mii-chan caught up with Yousuke as, "Hirata-kun wait! We need your help for the upcoming exam! Even Horikita-san wanted an answer if you'll at least participate!"

"Can you please just leave me alone already?! I am so frickin tired of this class!"

"I can't do that!"

"Then can you bring Yamauchi back?" She was surprised by his words as, "Screw you...talking with you is a waste of time. So leave me alone." He took a few steps when Mii-chan grabbed him on the wrist. "I'm not letting go unless you give me an answer!"

In response, he broke off her grip as she stumbled down. "Ittai..." She didn't expect that as, "If you keep hanging around with me, I'll break you physically and-"

"Whoa, there. That was very rough." From the top of the staircase, Kouenji made his appearance. "It would seem you've just become even harsher now than before, hm? Not to mention you're showing everyone such an unseemly side of yourself even harming a girl which you just did."

Yousuke gave him a death glare as Mii-chan managed to stand up and, "Whoa there. Don't worry about me. Carry on with what you're doing."

"Is there...something that you want from me?" Yousuke asked coldly.

"Ha! If I, who have everything have something I want from you, is to have you stay out of my sight!" Kouenji declared proudly.

"Shut up...you have no idea how I feel..."

"I don't know and I don't care." He replied back to him when, "P-Please stop Kouenji-kun! Hirata-kun hasn't done anything wrong!" Mii-chan spoke for him.

"Oh, my apologies. But you should forget about Hirata-boy as soon as possible." Kouenji told her as he descended down the stairs. "After all, this pathetic piece of trash is already beyond help now."

This statement literally pissed Yousuke off as he dropped his bag, pushed Mii-chan aside slamming her to the wall and grabbed Kouenji on the shirt collar by force. "ENOUGH ALREADY! YOU'RE SO DAMN ANNOYING THAT I WANT TO KILL YOU RIGHT HERE AND RIGHT NOW KOUENJI!"

In response, Kouneji just easily grabbed his left arm and raised it up as he felt some pain from the grab. "You should have chosen your words carefully. And I'm not gonna show any mercy to anyone who comes at me and threatens me." And he really is serious about it when he took notice of Mii-chan who's on her knees from the impact of the wall slam. "Since you're not going to do anything, I'll take care of her myself."

He then let go by throwing him onto the wall as he felt pain on his back and left arm as he snarled in anger and unhappiness. As for Kouenji, he made his move as, "Ehhhhh!?" A very flustered Mii-chan found herself lifted up bridal style from him. (Some chad is he...)

"P-Please put me down!" She begged.

"I can't do that dear Mii-chan. You're heartbroken and hurt from his moves." Kouenji replied calmly. "Why won't you let me help you?"

"B-But I'm fine! I-I'm not hurt anywhere though!" She replied.

"No need to worry, I may look like this but I am very gentle. Especially with cute girls like you." He replied with a wink from his right eye as Mii-chan squirmed a bit while pleading with Kouenji to put her down but he just laughed and said this, "I'm afraid I can't do that. I've already taken you." She can only squeal in shock and feel more flustered from his moves as behind them, Yousuke glared at this as he stood up and he noticed it. "Still unhappy with me?"

"Curse you...you're just going to keep screwing up my life forever..."

"Wrong answer. You're the one hurting those around you heartlessly." Kouenji replied to Yousuke as he grit his teeth in rage. "At the very least, I wouldn't ignore a cute girl like Mii-chan who showed me perfect affection!" She was so stunned by his words that she couldn't say a thing. As for Yousuke, he's had enough as he picked up his school and walked away passing them by.

And when the passing is done, Kouenji put Mii-chan down as they watched him leave. "Mii-chan. You should really give up on following Hirata-boy today." He told her and she really can't do anything about him. "He's already hopeless. Beyond cure."

"But..."

"We'll never know when he'll remain like this. Am I right Ayanokouji-boy?"

She was surprised by this mention as they looked to their left to see Ayanokouji descending down the stairs and meeting up with them. "I sent Kouenji to check on you, Mii-chan."

"I may gone a bit overboard and I must say, it's best for you to do something about it." Kouenji stated as Mii-chan looked at them in wonder.

"Perhaps...come on, let's take her back to the dorm. I'll carry her bag which is now in my hand and you carry her." Ayanokouji told him.

"M-Matte! I can take care of myself! And what if someone sees us!?" Too late as Kouenji laughed and carried her again in the same manner as they left the school together.

A while later...

At the park, Yousuke is alone on the bench even more depressed than just now. And then, Ayanokouji showed up as he noticed him. "Curses...why do people keep coming after me again and again..."

"Why won't you push me and run away like what you did to Mii-chan?" Ayanokouji asked him.

"How will I know? Maybe I have no more energy left to run away." He then sighed again. "What do you want with me?"

"I want to hear your story."

"Story? I thought I told it to you before at the cruise. You're wasting both our time."

"I know for sure, you never told me the full story. Not even half of it." Ayanokouji deduced. "Even so, you've been dragging out Yamauchi's expulsion forever, you refused to cooperate with the class without trying and you've been rude and disrespectful to many of the girls in our class."

"And what's the point in talking about it?" Yousuke asked.

"What I want to know is, what caused you to have the system of value you have. So you will tell me your full story." And at that moment, the inner darkness is unveiled and Yousuke witnessed it for the first time.

"Your eyes...there is a terrifying, deep darkness in them..." He described as he looked down on the ground for a second and then, it began.

"Like I told you before, a very good friend of mine was bullied and tormented horribly and I just stood by without helping him because I didn't want to become a victim of bullying like him and then, the attempted suicide that left him brain dead. In other words, he survived but is sleeping without any sign of recovery." Yousuke summarized for him.

"I know that." Ayanokouji told him.

"I thought this would end all bullying. But it wasn't." The full story will now be told by Yousuke as he began with growing anger. "After that incident, I saw an unfathomable darkness of humanity. The same group of bullies chose a new target and this time, it's from one of my classmates in my class! This classmate of mine who was nothing but a bystander, started getting the same treatment! Worse, many in my class who weren't previously involved in the bullying started to join in!"

"When the bottom of the caste system is no longer there, the student who was one level above it will naturally take their place. In a sense, it's the natural order of things." Ayanokouji explained.

"I knew I had to stop it." Yousuke continued his full story as he clenched his left fist. "That's why...I tried to control my class through fear and violence."

"You did, Hirata?"

"Yeah. I really swung my fists. I gave the group of bullies a merciless beating so brutal they were all hospitalized and broken to the point that full recovery will take months or even a year or two. I also did this without being seen. With that, no one tried to hit me back for what I did and I stood alone at the top of the class like a king while everyone else stays at the bottom like expendable peasants. If a dispute arose, be it big or small, I would inflict both sides the same amount of pain and punishment."

Ayanokouji said nothing as he continued on. "I guess I destroyed that year of our lives as a result. The smiles from my classmate's disappeared, and they just lived their lives like emotionless robots."

"So you can't forgive yourself for Yamauchi being targeted, huh?" Ayanokouji asked as he said nothing for a few seconds. "In the end, I could not protect him...I knew it. I was the one who shouldn't have brought the class together...I even thought about using fear and violence to do so!"

"It's not my and Horikita's fault that Yamauchi got expelled. Do you understand that?"

"Yes, nothing we can do about it. There was nothing we can do."

"You're wrong." Yousuke looked up upon hearing this. "It's your fault that Yamauchi got expelled, Hirata." This made him tremble in shock as Ayanokouji spoke on. "If you really wanted to save him, then you shouldn't have done everything you possibly could."

He stood up in response to defend himself. "I already did my best! But there was nothing I could do!"

"Honami from Class B did not lose a single person to sacrifice." Ayanokouji stated and thought of this. "And thanks to me, we worked it out without her having to empty her classmate's expenses and even making use of the 5 million that Ishizaki and Ibuki gave her."

"Th-That's...That's because she's a special case! She was able to do it because she saved a lot of private points!" Yousuke stated with a comparsion.

"Then it's your fault for not leading the class like she did." Ayanokouji stated back.

"But that's absurd!" He replied back.

"Yes it's absurd but it can't be helped. You chose to take this path and you should have just kept this fantasy of saving everyone to yourself." He gasped at his words as he spoke on. "But if you continue to feel this way, you will take on all the blame when you fail. You need to be prepared for that. Just like when Horikita spoke about nominating the one to be expelled."

"I-"

"Shame. I was wrong about you." Ayanokouji declared as he paused. "I thought you were an honour student, a man of character who has the respect of everyone, but you are not. You're just a weak, incompetent student who talks big about things you can't even do. Kouenji was right about one thing. You've been spending time tending Yamauchi's wounds that you ended up becoming a despondent to the point you despised and disrespected everyone. Even clinging to this hopeless fantasy that you refuse to accept the reality that someone has to go. Even if they committed major offenses, you still believe that they don't deserve it. That is a person you are, Hirata Yousuke."

Because of this, he slumped onto the park bench speechless. "How long are you going to keep dreaming?" Ayanokouji asked.

"Is that...your true nature?" Yousuke asked while trembling as tears started flowing out from his eyes. "Your words are so terrifying, merciless and cold..."

"You are free to wish for whatever you want. But if you really want to save everyone, you have to fight to the bitter end and push yourself to your limits." Ayanokouji spoke on. "If there are expelled students in the process, you have no choice but to accept it and keep moving forward."

"That is so cruel..." Yousuke stammered with more tears.

"If you stop now, the students around you will disappear one after another until you have no one left. That is why, you must keep moving forward to the end no matter the difficulties. If you do that, when all is said and done, there will be lots of students standing right behind you." Ayanokouji stated.

"Do...Do I...Do I have to...keep everything to myself...and walk forward alone?" He asked while crying softly and looking up. "Then...how do I let myself be vulnerable?"

"When you're in trouble, you can always rely on your classmates." He replied back to him. "You can vent out your frustration to anyone you want to rely on. It doesn't matter who's leading the pack or who's following."

"Is it...really okay for me...to walk in front of everyone like this?" A teary Yousuke asked as Ayanokouji walked to him and placed his hand on his shoulder.

"It's alright for you to take the lead." He answered to him and this time, he finally felt it. He got on his knees and hands on the ground and wailed out his emotions loudly. "This should be fine." Ayanokouji thought.

And the next day...

Mii-chan is still worried about him as she looked at his empty desk. And then, "Ohayo Mii-chan." She gasped and looked behind to see Yousuke now, normal as he placed his bag on his desk and went to the front. "Minna. May I have your attention?"

All were astonished by his change in behaviour and the next thing it happened, Yousuke told everyone his story and Ayanokouji took notice,

It seems unexpected in my opinion. But I can see that he went the extra mile to redeem himself and...to overcome his remaining defect

Back to Yousuke, "Ever since Yamauchi was expelled, I can't forgive myself for not doing anything. And being unable to save him is the same way it happened in the past. This is why my behaviour has been erratic against many of you. For that, I apologize for it."

Everyone was speechless at all this as he spoke on. "It may be too late for me to apologize but if everyone is alright with it, I would like to contribute to the class again starting today!"

"Hirata-kun!" Mii-chan exclaimed.

"Welcome back Yousuke-kun!" Karuizawa cheered.

"We've been waiting for your return." said Chiaki.

"And now we can compete with Class A!" said Satou as many gathered around him and he talked with them.

"What just happened?" Horikita asked Ayanokouji for she just arrived and Yousuke noticed her. Approaching her, they greeted each other first and next, "I don't think that I was wrong in the class vote incident the other day."

"I see..." She replied.

"But I don't think what you did was wrong either." He then paused for a second. "No...you did the right thing back then."

"Your way of thinking seems different from how it was just yesterday." said Horikita.

"I'll do my utmost to regain all the trust that I've lost." Yousuke assured to her with a smile as he raised his hand out. She looked at it for a second and shook his hand with a smile. "It's good to have you back Hirata-kun."

That night...

"Checkmate."

"Not quite yet." Horikita replied as she observed the monitor. A chess game has just finished between her and Ayanokouji.

"The chess skills that you've acquired in such a short time are quite impressive." He told her via voicemail.

"In the end, I hardly ever won against you, even though you're going easy on me."

"No matter who I'm up against, there's no one out there stronger than me."

"You sure have great confidence in yourself."

"It's not confidence, it's experience." He replied. "I guess we should call it a night and prepare for tomorrow."

"Agreed. See you tomorrow and good night.

"Same for you. Rest well."

That was some session as Horikira looked at the monitor. Ayanokouji won the game 51 times with 3 losses and her statstics is the reverse from his.

The day of the Event Selection Exam...

At the gathering place for the Commanders which looks like a special school facility, Ayanokouji, Honami and Sakayanagi are outside the exam rooms waiting. "It's strange that Kaneda-kun is running late." Honami spoke out.

And then, footsteps can be heard as all looked up to see Ryuuen approaching them. "Ryuuen-kun? What are you doing here?"

"What are you all upset about? He asked with a sinister smile.

"Naruhoto. I had thoroughly convinced myself that the Commander would be the students with the Protection Point." said Sakayanagi.

"If the commander is absent, of course someone has to take his place. Am I right?" Ryuuen asked as Honami never expected this to happen since her class go up against his'.

"It seems the showdown is shaping up to be quite interesting." said Sakayanagi. "Now that everyone is here, let's get going, shall we?"

All are ready as they entered their respective exam rooms but not before Honami grasped onto Ayanokouji's hands. They smiled at each other as they let go. The final special exam begins...

It appears Ayanokouji broke down Yousuke completely and fixed him. Nice move. And I added the scene of him telling the whole class about his past. I can say that this is his way of going the extra mile to fix himself also. So with that, he's now a new person and better than ever.

There are some changes in the scenes and a new one between Ayanokouji and Katsuragi. Amusing to say also, Kouenji was bold enough to confront him and lift Mii-chan! I wonder what it'll be like if he has a thing for her? Hmmm...

Oh well, better get to work on the Event Selection Exam that will take place in the next chapter!
