It was a peaceful morning (for once) at Watchpoint: Gibraltar. The Null Sector Invasion had been dealt with and there was no word of Talon, so everyone was taking some relaxation time in the lounge. Hana was playing video games, Lucio was writing a new song, and Angela was having some well-deserved chamomile tea.
At that moment, their long-awaited peace was shattered by the door being booted open by a certain time-travelling Brit with too-tight leggings on.
"Good Moooooorniiing!" she shouted, "I've got some neeeeews!"
Angela sighed, putting down her chamomile with a sigh so heavy, even Reinhardt would have trouble lifting it in his Crusader armour. "What is this news, Lena?"
The pilot was practically jumping up and down with excitement. "You know how we've all been 'ere for…" she frowned "How long has it been again?"
"Six Months." sighed Angela.
"Wow, that long?" Tracer blinked (as in her eyes, not as in teleported) "Blimey! Anyway" she continued, actually jumping up and down this time "IIIII've decided to bring someone ooooverr!"
She blinked (yes, I do mean teleported this time) out of the room, and back inside again, this time carrying someone on her shoulders. A tall, willowy woman with long red hair, wearing a massive stripy sweater the colours of milk chocolate and sunflowers, combined with a pair of light blue joggers. Her face was like a beautiful doe, and her eyes were a pleasant shade of brown.
Tracer began to jump up and down again with the woman sitting on her shoulders, rather overexcited now (Angela began to worry how much caffeine she had ingested today). "COME MEET MY GIRLFRIEEEND!" she sang joyfully, causing Emily herself to snort with laughter. "Put me down, Lena!" she told her in a Scottish accent.
"Nope! You'rehereyou'rehereyou'rehereandI'mnotlettinggo!"
"Seriously, I'm startin' ter feel a bit sick!"
"Oh, sorry Love!" Lena gingerly put her down.
"Nice to meetcha!" grinned Lucio, extending a hand for her to shake. "I'm Lucio!"
Emily shook it. "Emily Carruthers!"
At that moment, the entire lounge exploded.
"Emily Carruthers? The author!?"
"The woman who wrote 'Murder in the Clouds!?"
"The genius who revolutionised genre crossovers at 20!?"
"The person who brought Historical Fiction in graphic novels back from the grave!?"
"Gotta be honest, I have no idea who you are."
"Read a book, Hana!"
Emily gave a nervous smile, awkwardly fidgeting her hands. "Nice tah see yer all fans!" she blurted out.
"Alright, alright!" grinned Tracer, standing in front of her "I got some… catching up to do with Em! No-one bother us unless the world's endin'!"
With that, they exited the room in the direction of Tracer's bedroom.
"She seems nice." commented Lucio.
"I've known her almost as long as I've known Lena." Brigitte told them. "She visited sometimes while Lena was staying at mine when she first got her accelerator."
sat in deep thought, her match long since lost and forgotten. "Wait, how famous is she?"
"Arguably more famous than all of us combined."
"...I gotta read one of her books."
. . .
It quickly turned out that Emily was not here to visit, but to stay. The team quickly grew to like her. She was very similar to Lena - kind, funny, and quick to talk about her interests whenever the opportunity arose. In other ways, she was drastically different - socially awkward, more of a realist, usually had a lie in while Tracer took early morning runs, and thought more before she acted (perhaps a little too much, as Kiriko discovered when she found her trying to decide whether to bake brownies or shortbread. She chose to teach her how to make Uirō instead).
There was one time she was showing everyone some art she was doing for a new Detective Comic in the style of Ligne Claire, and Angela (who, as it turns out was a massive Ligne Claire fan) proceeded to have a long and very pleasant discussion with her about the long and esteemed art style.
She was also called to referee a grass-sledging race between Lucio, Kiriko, and . Genji and Lena wanted to join in, but everyone pointed out that the metal on Genji and the accelerator would weigh them down and make them faster than everyone else.
However, there were also significantly less wholesome moments.
For example, when Reinhardt was showing everyone the first bullet he got shot with while telling a story, Emily hastily excused herself and left the table with Lena following close behind. Kiriko couldn't help but notice that she flinched or grew quiet whenever Talon was mentioned, never saw her watch Lena in the shooting gallery, and she screamed whenever a loud or sudden noise happened near her, with Lena quickly blinking to comfort her. Occasionally, she appeared from her room looking as if she'd had the worst night's sleep in her life.
Emily didn't want to talk about it, so no-one pried. But they could make a few guesses…
