Joanna Riggs made her way to the garden exhibit, where the imposing Monolith stood as the centerpiece. The lush greenery and ancient artifact created a serene atmosphere, but Joanna knew better than to assume it would stay peaceful for long. She spotted the newly-hired docents John B. Routledge, Jordan Baker, and Emily Cooper engaged with visitors, explaining the historical significance of the Monolith.
"Hey, everyone," Joanna greeted with a warm smile. "How are you holding up?"
John B. grinned. "Doing great! This Monolith really draws in the crowds."
Jordan nodded. "Yeah, it's fascinating. People are really interested in the history behind it."
Emily, however, looked a bit distracted. "I'm fine, but I'm getting pretty hungry. I could use my break soon."
Joanna chuckled. "I have just the place for you. There's a new museum restaurant called Chichen Cafe. They serve delicious Mayan food. You have to try their Mayan brownies; they're made with real cacao."
Emily's eyes lit up. "That sounds amazing! I'll head there right away."
Joanna pointed her in the right direction. "It's located in the left museum wing by the Edzná exhibit. Enjoy your break!"
As Emily made her way to the Chichen Cafe, she could already smell the tantalizing aromas wafting through the museum. She reached the cafe, ordered the Mayan brownies and Mayan-style fish tacos, and was about to find a seat when she noticed a familiar face behind the counter.
"Gabriel?" Emily exclaimed, surprised.
Gabriel, the charming chef from Paris, looked up and smiled. "Emily! What a surprise to see you here. What brings you to Beech Hill?"
"I could ask you the same thing!" Emily replied, grinning. "What are you doing all the way from Paris to Washington D.C.?"
Gabriel laughed. "I'm here to help launch the Chichen Cafe. They wanted some international flair, and I couldn't resist the opportunity. Plus, it's a chance to explore a new city."
Emily's eyes sparkled. "That's fantastic! Do you have any croissants on the menu?"
Gabriel shook his head, chuckling. "No croissants, I'm afraid. We're sticking to authentic Mayan cuisine here. But I promise the food is just as good."
As they chatted, Emily noticed another familiar face waiting patiently in line behind her. It was Sylvie Grateau, her former boss from Paris.
"Sylvie? What are you doing here?" Emily asked, astonished.
Sylvie raised an eyebrow, looking around the cafe with mild interest. "I wanted to see how you're doing in your new job. So, how do you like it?"
Emily smiled. "I love it. Being a docent at Beech Hill is fascinating. There's so much history and culture to share."
Sylvie smirked. "I bet Joanna hates it."
Emily shook her head. "Actually, I think she loves her job. She's passionate about the museum and the exhibits."
Sylvie shrugged. "If you say so. But it sounds like you've found your place here."
Emily nodded. "I really have. It's been a great experience so far."
Their conversation was interrupted by Gabriel, who handed Emily her order. "Here you go, Emily. Enjoy your lunch!"
"Thanks, Gabriel," Emily said, taking her tray. She turned back to Sylvie. "Are you staying for lunch too?"
Sylvie glanced at the menu. "I suppose I could try something new. Why not?"
Emily smiled. "Great! Let's find a table."
As they sat down to eat, Emily couldn't help but feel grateful for the unexpected reunion. It seemed that Beech Hill was full of surprises today. Meanwhile, back at the garden exhibit, Joanna continued to check in with the other docents, ensuring everything was running smoothly.
Joanna felt a sense of satisfaction as she headed back to her office. The museum was bustling with activity, and the new docents were settling in well. As she walked through the exhibits, she couldn't help but chuckle at the thought of Gabriel serving Mayan cuisine at the Chichen Cafe. It truly was an eventful day at Beech Hill Museum.
