Chapter 10 - The Beat Goes On
Josh called her just before lunch as he had told her. He was in luck, Kate was free for lunch.
"So", he tells Kate, "how about I get us lunch and we can meet in my office. Less public there and no one can overhear our lunch dialogue."
"Thank you, that is thoughtful since as you are a person involved with the JAG investigation I am conducting, the two of us dining together might raise uncalled for interest."
"No problem, what do you want for lunch, my treat."
"Oh, you don't need to do that, we can go Dutch."
"Kate, I have a rule that I never let a woman whom I have invited for a meal pay her way. It is my privilege to have a gorgeous woman such as yourself be in my company."
Kate blushes at the remark and is glad they are chatting over the phone. Her blush at Josh's compliment speaks volumes to Kate's mutual attraction to the handsome doctor. She did not want to show her hand at this time, but she definitely felt the pull of Josh's interest in her. It had certainly been a while since a man not only showed interest in her but also professed it so openly. Josh's confidence and self-assurance that he had Kate's attention was extremely attractive to her. It took an alpha female to match an alpha male and there were definitely sparks radiating from the two of them.
Kate gets to Josh's office first, but his orderly had been directed to show her in and seat her at Josh's little circular office table, the one he used for meetings. Minutes later Josh arrives with a rather large paper bag the contents of which Kate knew was their lunch. Josh had the club sandwich and Kate had wanted the pasta. They had only an hour so they quickly set up the lunch and they started their lunch with both eating and having a conversation.
"So Kate, what type of man do you tend to gravitate to?"
A direct and leading question, but Kate plays coy, "Well, I do tend to be hard on men who express interest, but confidence for me is very appealing."
"I see, does that apply to people in the medical field?"
"I don't know. I've never dated a doctor, let alone one who is a surgeon. And what of you, what kind of woman are you drawn to?"
"Oh definitely military women, they are so independent and also very comfortable in any situation. I am especially drawn to women marines."
God this man was direct and his eyes just seem to penetrate Kate, like he could see her without the persona she tended to display.
"I see, does that include present company?"
"Oh most definitely and if the lady would allow me to pursue her in earnest, I think it could work for us?"
"Is this you asking permission?"
"Do I need it?"
"You have to earn it!"
"And how does one do that?"
"Let's just say you have a good start."
There is definitely a lot of sexual tension being generated from their conversation, but it is broken when Kate gets a cell phone ring.
Without a pause Kate answers her phone, "Major Beckett, roger that, be there in ten."
She turns her notice to Josh, "Sorry, duty calls. That was Castle, he has a break in the investigation and needs to see me.
"Talk about bad luck."
"Well look at it this way, it's better than no luck."
"So what do I need to get lucky Kate?"
"Just stay on present course, but I do have to go."
"Go we'll touch base later."
As Josh watches Kate leave, he can't help but become more intrigued by her. She could hold her ground with any man and match him tit for tat on the banter and innuendo's.
"God!", he thinks,"I have got to peel her layers back. There is so much to learn about her, more than any other woman I have ever had the opportunity to be with."
Josh resolved then to seriously pursue Kate Beckett despite the fact it would be a long distance relationship, at least for the start of it.
A Break In the JAG Investigation
Kate meeting with Castle disclosed the big break in their investigation. It turns out the woman who was seen visiting all three of their victims was identified. She was a Syrian by birth, name of Armadie Manounpor, who had sought asylum in the U.S. after her village had been attacked by anti-terrorists forces and most of her family killed. At least that was her cover story. In reality, she was sent as a sleeper to infiltrate the U.S. military hospitals as a volunteer care worker by her group of so called 'liberators'. These 'liberators' had vowed to free Arabs from foreign influence in a JIHAD against them.
Armadie had been a nurse in Syria when granted asylum. She continued in the health field in the capacity of a volunteer care giver, but did so with the military. She was to have established herself and then await further direction. Her objective had been to extract critical intelligence on U.S. ammo and weapons storage sites in the U.S. and around the globe. This was done by injecting a drug in the patient which combined with the anesthetics used during their surgery left them open for subconscious questioning during their sleep. Over the decade such sleeper operatives efforts had gotten an extensive list of these ammo storage facilities. However, upon learning that her only remaining brother had been killed by U.S. Forces targeting their group. She then began a vendetta of killing off military patients once she got the information.
The JAG Investigation had only revealed her three latest murder victims and it was suspected she had many more such victims. The JAG investigation was concluded and the final report completed. Then the JAG Team turned it over to Homeland Security for further action.
Needless to say Capt Brennan was pleased with the results of the JAG findings as her staff had been shown to have had no involvement in the murders, other than being fooled by the sleeper agent, who apparently had done similar homicides in other military hospitals in the other armed services. She had been doing the murders for over almost a decade transferring from one hospital to another avoiding detection.
Dr. Josh Davidson was also pleased as the JAG had found none of his surgical staff involved in the homicides. Once the JAG Investigation was completed, the team had one last night before returning to JAG HQ in Washington D.C. Josh had asked Kate out for a dinner and a night on the town the evening before their departure the next day.
Besides his Harley, Josh had a vintage BMW 520i that he had restored and which he used for dates. For this date, they hit the Gas Lamp Quarters in San Diego and tried out several of the clubs. They ended the date with an agreement to enter into a long-distance romance until such time as Josh was transferred to D.C. for his next duty station, during which they would continue with their dating but in the same location. Both were looking forward to that happening.
Josh saw her off at the Marine Corps Air Station at Camp Pendleton when they boarded a Marine C130 for their flight back. They managed to find a secluded spot at the Air Station Terminal where they traded passionate good bye kisses out of sight from everyone. When she arrived in D.C., Kate called Josh to let him know she had arrived. They spent almost an hour in conversation before they ended their phone conversation.
The fact however that Josh and Kate had celebrated her departure with a farewell date and that Josh saw her off the next day did not go unnoticed by one LCDR Rick Rodger née Castle. Rick preferred not to get bring it up with Kate, but he was grateful in a way as Josh might just prevent Kate and him from rekindling those forbidden desires from their one night together. There was now a touch of jealousy that Rick had for Josh, but he quickly put it aside with the reasoning that he should be happy if Kate found her one and done in Josh. Still, Rick could not help but think he was once again missing his chance with Kate. He realized full well that if he and Kate got serious, both could keep it professional on the job. No one would be the wiser of their hidden relationship from their personal life. Still, Rick thought, why tempt fate and complicate both their lives? If Kate found a man she is happy with, Rick Rodgers could accept that situation, even if it broke his heart.
Both were so good at denying what they wanted with each other and used 'fraternization' as an excuse why they did not get more involved with each other on a personal level. What could this current situation with one interested Josh Davidson mean for the two? Would they continue to deny each other, or would it just inflame what they already were trying to avoid? Only time would tell, but certainly, it was a future that could be influenced by secret longings and unresolved sexual tensions. That is what had lead to that one night Rick and Kate had shared in an intimate encounter. It was the night that would not be spoken of by the two of them each trying so hard to bury it and put it behind them. What both did not realize was that the heart wants what the heart wants and to deny it could be very precarious for them both.
First Time
So days turned into weeks and weeks into months as Josh and Kate continued their long distance romance. They talked almost nightly over the phone, at times when both were busy, it was just a brief call to say 'hello' and get caught up on their day. Other times they could talk for hours on all subjects. Those calls had brought them closer together, and the romance blossomed. About two months into the long distance romance, they both took leave at the same time and agreed to meet at a half point between D.C. and California.
It turns out that place was San Antonio, Texas, a location all too familiar with Kate. They stayed at the Air Force Lodge on Randolph AFB. Both got a separate room but made sure the rooms were side by side with a common door between them that opened up both rooms into one joined space.
They slept together for the first time during that five day stay at Randolph. It had happened after a dinner at the O'Club. During their dinner, they were talking about Josh's next duty assignment.
"Kate, my orders came in for my next duty station at the Military Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, within the DC-Maryland-Virginia area. We will be in the same location by next month."
"That's great Josh, we have both been waiting for this! When are the orders effective?"
"In three weeks, then I get travel time, but I am also taking thirty days leave en route. That so we can be together and also for house hunting."
"We can house hunt together", responds Kate to Josh's disclosure.
"I'd like that."
"Let's celebrate", Kate says and then orders another bottle of wine, but this time, sparkling wine, to get a feel of celebration with a bubbly drink.
They finish the bottle, in between slow dances, which the Club DJ had played, some by request from the couple. Drinks done, they make it back to their separate rooms and then open the connecting door between their rooms. Josh steps into Kate's room and gives her a passionate kiss, that begins their heavy foreplay. That started their night. Both had been so eager to get the other in bed. Clothes came off quickly and both stand there staring at each other and enjoying the view.
"You're gorgeous Kate!"
"You're not so bad yourself, stud!"
Stud! She called him stud, and just those words had him aroused.
"Is that you talking dirty to me Kate!"
"From the looks of it, you enjoy my dirty talk. Still, Joshua Davidson, you have no idea!", Kate replied, using some of the words she had once spoken to put another man to put him in his place. But Josh's place was different from that man. She had just invited Josh to bed her in a bold but seductive manner. Josh had caught on to her invite!
With those words, Josh backs her up on to her bed. They both fall on her bed with Josh falling on top of her. He enters her intimately with Kate letting out a lustful moan when they joined carnally. It had been so long for Kate and she released all that built up tension in her as she climaxed. They both finish their passionate and eager lust-making session. The two had consummated their relationship.
What was now in store for this newly joined couple? What was the road ahead for them? Only the future would tell. Still, as they fell into a deep recovery sleep, Kate wondered if she had done the right thing here with Josh. Furthermore, how could long could she keep this hidden from her JAG team. She anguished over the thought of how Castle would accept this new circumstance in her life. Kate surprised herself when she contemplated how this latest development with Josh would impact Rick.
Why should she care?
This was a private affair and need not be of interest to Castle. Until she realized that as her team leader, she had to reveal this to him since Josh would now be listed as her significant other. Kate's parents had passed long ago, right after college, and she had no siblings. Josh would become her emergency contact in event of injury or death. She now needed to gain courage to tell Rick about Josh. Kate was not looking forward to that moment!
