Black Boy Joy (Andre)
Throughout the summer at the UCLA intensive, Andre found himself grappling with an unexpected challenge – microaggressions rooted in racial stereotypes. From the moment he arrived, the program seemed to have preconceived notions about his musical preferences solely based on his appearance.
The boarding program had assumed Andre's focus would be on R&B, not just because it was evident in his demonstrated skills but also because of stereotypes associated with his race. In a defiant act of revenge against these expectations, Andre chose to immerse himself in classical music instead of participating in the hip-hop intensive.
The decision wasn't without its consequences, and Andre felt the weight of discomfort and isolation. Navigating an environment that seemed determined to pigeonhole him, he found solace in the fact that, despite the challenges, he was learning and growing as a musician.
The summer may have been rough, marked by microaggressions and the struggle against stereotyping, but Andre's resilience and determination shone through. In the midst of adversity, he found an unexpected avenue for personal and musical growth.
One evening, Andre headed toward the music room. He was listening to a floutist. She started out classical, and he moved closer and noticed she was thiblack girl from classical. Her name was Melissa. She was playing classical from her flute and eventually changed in quality giving it a beat boxy hip hop kind of sound. And andre thought the sound was sick he danced into the room. Melissa paused a moment as Andre began to play the Piano next to her jamming with her. Then she smiled and went back to her rhythm. Write a conversation between Andre and Melissa where he gives her the nick name Lizzo. He befriends Lizzo and they work together the rest of the summer.
Andre entered the music room, drawn by the mesmerizing sound of a flutist filling the air with classical melodies. As he moved closer, he realized the talented musician was a black girl named Melissa. Intrigued by her seamless transition from classical to a beatbox-inspired hip-hop vibe, Andre couldn't help but be captivated by the unique sound.
Unable to contain himself, Andre began dancing to the infectious rhythm, adding his own flair to the impromptu collaboration. Melissa, momentarily pausing her performance, looked at Andre with a mix of surprise and amusement. Without missing a beat, she continued playing, this time incorporating the dynamic interplay with Andre on the piano.
After the jam session, Andre approached Melissa with a wide grin. "That was incredible! You've got serious skills, my friend."
Melissa chuckled, "Thanks! I try to keep things interesting. I'm Melissa, by the way."
"Nice to meet you, Melissa! I'm Andre," he replied, extending a hand for a friendly shake. "But, you know what? You need a nickname that matches your musical style. How about Lizzo?"
Melissa raised an eyebrow, considering the suggestion. "Lizzo, huh? I like it. Catchy and full of energy. Thanks, Andre!"
From that moment on, Andre and "Lizzo" formed a dynamic duo, collaborating and creating music together throughout the rest of the summer. Their friendship blossomed, echoing through the halls of the UCLA intensive with the sounds of their collaborative compositions.
Andre and Lizzo explored downtown LA, enjoying the tourist attractions and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the city. As they strolled over the Walk of Fame, Lizzo expressed her desire to capture a moment with stars bearing black names.
Andre guided her to stars honoring legendary singers, sharing stories about each one. Their journey continued with a shopping spree in the local stores. When they decided to grab lunch at Ciccones, known for celebrity sightings, they encountered an unexpected obstacle.
At the restaurant's entrance, they were stopped by staff, who deemed their casual attire inappropriate. Andre, frustrated by the double standard, contemplated speaking out but ultimately chose to let it go. Lizzo, with her characteristic nonchalance, dismissed the incident, suggesting the food might not be worth the trouble. They walked away, witnessing a frenzy of paparazzi surrounding someone famous attempting to enter.
Andre seethed with anger, but Lizzo decided not to dwell on negativity. "Take me to vegan McDonald's," she declared, steering the day in a different direction. The two friends continued to explore the city, sharing laughter and good times despite the initial setback.
At the end of the summer, Lizzo was headed back to Houston. And Andre knew he had met a very special girl. He told her she was going to do big things and that she should remember him when she blows up. She says you are going to be my producer I'm coming back for you. Then she kissed him. And Andre froze in shock and did not respond. Embarrassed Lizzo left to catch her flight. Andre was left behind not knowing exactly what to think.
Andre received a text from his friend Robyn, asking if she and Cat could come over. They mentioned wanting to catch up and hang out. Andre, who had been busy preparing some of his songs for the upcoming back-to-school showcase, agreed and welcomed them over.
When Robyn and Cat arrived, Andre was surprised to see a new face accompanying them. This was Robbie, and Andre quickly sensed the reason for Robyn's earlier nervousness. It became apparent that Robyn had undergone a transition and was now presenting as a man named Robbie. In that moment, Andre's protective instincts kicked in. He felt a strong sense of responsibility and support for Robbie, understanding the challenges and triumphs that often accompanied a journey of self-discovery and transition.
As they spent time together, Andre made a conscious effort to be affirming and understanding, ensuring Robbie felt comfortable and accepted. The three friends shared stories, laughter, and music, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and support. Andre silently vowed to be there for Robbie, recognizing the importance of allies in the journey towards self-discovery and authenticity.
